my giant barn doors finally came inside this weekend!!
HOORAY!
i am in love with how they change the space.
i’ll show it when i have it styled the way i like (which could be a long time but i’ll try not to let it be)
i wanted them to be hung on the wall because i wanted them to go almost to the ceiling.
so we had to figure out HOW to do that.
and it only took two trips to the hardware store.
IMG_0938IMG_0612
cuddly brothers.IMG_0782-2
these guys are still here.
they are the world’s most boring pets… FYI.
and they creep me out.
i’m not “afraid” of them but they just gag me.

IMG_0627
the bathtub at the craft house is heavenly.
it’s worth driving 15 minutes to take a bath.
100%.

IMG_0656
talby had a volleyball tournament last weekend… those are crazy.
crazy loud.  crazy crowded.
but love watching her play and smile and be silly with her team & her brothers.

IMG_0833
and we had another week full of basketball games.
like… 9 games.
IMG_0844IMG_0902
funny guy.
🙂

IMG_0911
of out ALL our kiddos… i think annie may possibly love basketball the most.
which is fun to know we still have a lot of basketball in our future.
and that is serious.  i am not being sarcastic.
i love to watch them play!
(i also love to stay home and do nothing but we get to do that all summer)
IMG_0486
i love this 40’s house but i really do miss the chickens being out like when we at the farmhouse.

IMG_0610-2
last week was busy with scott, sean AND talby getting their driver’s licenses.
scott got his full license and the talby and sean got learner’s permits.
a learner’s permit means you can drive with any licensed driver over 21 in the passenger seat.
then at 16 (or after driver’s ed) they can get a restricted license that allows them to drive to work or school only.
it was a big week!

i got to help make a meal for Scott & Sean’s basketball team last night.
i like those boys.
all of them.
and i am LOVING watching all their games this year.

IMG_0735
i did some art journaling (keeping with my 2016 goal of creating something each week)
🙂

.
i started reading this book… I Quit Sugar
on paper it seems so easy.
and logically it IS.
but it’s so much deeper than that isn’t it?!
FullSizeRender 81paleo
i thought both of these books looked interesting at B&N this weekend.
The Paleo Kitchen and Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind
they both had really great photos and everything looks SOOOO good to eat!

silly
and keeping with pure randomness… these 4 pics cracked me up this week.
1. i don’t answer my phone unless it’s my child.
2. i cut my boys hair and they don’t love it but don’t want to go GET a haircut either.
3. this sign needs to live in my laundry room
4. i would like 7 of these tank tops.  one for every day of the week.  ha ha haaaaa

.
and lastly…. craig and i went out on a date (that i begged for) on saturday night.
(begged is a strong word) (threatened… ? ha!)
we ran into Barnes & Noble & i was chatting with mr. duerksen, looked up & said “well hey! that’s my friend Jeanne!”
and sent her this grainy pic immediately.
🙂
IMG_0940
Jeanne has TONS of classes on her site but there is one going on right now called LISTENING.
she asked over 20 men and women to share our thoughts on Listening – Finding the Quiet and hearing the voice of God.
and i am one of those women and i did make a video about my personal struggles and praises.
so come join this free class!!!
it started january 1 but it’s not too late to join at all…you can still see all the videos.
listening-tagline_zps6kygw4ko1listeningteacherscolor_zpsqjhdh1a51
alright.
my house is empty today! my husband is off work and the kids are off school but no one is here!
i am making PW Dr. Pepper pork in the crockpot.
my husband has requested Bread Pudding for dessert (see??? deeper than the logical I Quit Sugar)
and i HOPE we get to watch a movie tonight as a family.
(but no doubt there will be a football or basketball game on that can’t possibly be missed…)
HA.

did you see The Martian?! we watched that on friday and LOVED it!

rainbow rearranged

i just love pictures!
i put this together of all my instagram pics from 2015 and just smile so big as it plays.

SUPERskinnysideways
over the break i had to do something with poor annie’s room.
i knew she would be bringing more in at christmas and there was just no room.
she had SO many clothes that she was just living out of laundry baskets, never could find what she needed and everything was always wrinkled.
i say “she has so many clothes” meaning – summer clothes still out, last years clothes she’d outgrown, and all the clothes talby passed onto her that didn’t quite fit yet.
all in one space that is meant to hold about 1/3 of what it was holding.
i sat with her pretty much all day long and we organized.
we piled everything into groups – ALL pants… ALL shorts… long sleeve… short sleeve… etc.
she tried on so many things that day.
in the end she had one bag to donate, one that was for next year and three bags she’d outgrown!
suddenly she had gained all her floor space back in her room!
when we were finally organized i asked if she would like to rearrange her room since we had the time and it was so clean?
YES!
(i should’ve gotten out my real camera & taken these pics because they are grainy with my phone… but i didn’t)
IMG_0156
when we had her furniture the way she liked i recalled i had several things for her walls that i’d forgotten about!
seriously… my brain!
i found the giraffe from a shop called Makewells.
the frame is from target as well as the floral comforter.
her name pillow is from ChrissieGraceDesigns… special from a fundraiser way back when.  🙂

IMG_0159IMG_0152IMG_0162-2
her curtains were made from fabric at hobby lobby and i “lined” them with a flat sheet from walmart.

IMG_0189
she has more prints she’d like to hang on this wall yet but we need to get some colorful frames first.
the bunting up top was a gift from Joy’s Hope and the arrows came from AidiesHideaway.
and that is the 11×14 sized canvas in my shop.
it’s 25% off this week!! Use the code 25OFFPHIL48 at checkout.

IMG_0183
IMG_0181
i found these shadow box type frames at TJMaxx this summer.
i found two at one store and a week later found two a another store… it was meant to be… right?
they are so darn cute and THE perfect shade of turquoise!
i hung scripture cards from TheLovelyWords on the clips.
it looks like her shop doesn’t have any right now but i saw these cute ones too when i searched etsy.  🙂

IMG_0180
all of her furniture is second hand… that’s just how we roll.
add a coat of paint and it’s like new.
it’s pretty much that way in our whole house actually…

IMG_0165IMG_0166IMG_0190
and just in case you wondered how it looked before… here is the link to when we surprised her with a room makeover in 2014!
complete with paint colors, a young Stanley and a little video.

vacation 2015 – part one

my favorite week of the summer is vacation week.
i get craig and my kids all to myself.   🙂
we get to just hang out with our kids all week and do only fun things!
no chores!  no work!  no sports!
it’s a sacred week for me.
i look forward to it for 51 weeks a year!

our kids had been begging to go back to The City Museum in St. Louis so we decided to stay one night in St. Louis on our way to Michigan.  The City Muesem is SO COOL!  Our kids were off running around the whole time and i literally sat in a chair and chilled… for hours.  I had no need to go down a 10 story slide or crawl under floors.  They came back soaked with sweat and happy as can be.
if you have never gone to the City Museum… YOU HAVE TO DO IT.
i mean it.

city2
that is sean… up in a tiny wire cage 11 stories above the ground.
i was having heart palpitations just getting this photo.
he said “WHY? You’re not even up here?!”
fear of heights is a weird thing… it’s not logical.
but it’s so crazy real!

IMG_0771IMG_0758IMG_0699
we also had a very VERY hot and sweaty trip to the St. Louis Zoo… along with about a million other people.
we didn’t last too long.
it’s a BEAUTIFUL zoo!  AND it’s FREE!
but it was soooo hot and soooo crowded that we took off pretty quickly.

annie had been looking forward to going to Fitz’s for their famous root beer floats again.
they did not disappoint.
🙂
fitz1
we went late afternoon and every one got their own HUGE float and then we ate pizza at about 10 PM.
so it was basically ice cream for dinner.
(another thing i love about vacation…)
IMG_0728IMG_0718
mine was called the Loop Da Loop – root beer with coffee ice cream & chocolate sauce.
dang.
i loved it.

drive
in the morning we loaded back up and hit the road towards Michigan.
the big van we use for Craft Weekend is so good for vacation!
everyone gets their own row!
but sometimes they share a spot to play games or watch dvds together.
the boys just lay down and sleep.
not complaining about that one bit.

IMG_1304
everyone asked on every instagram picture “where do you stay?”
and we all thought it was funny because anywhere along the water all the way up michigan is awesome.
it’s all so nice.
we tend to stay near St. Joseph area because it’s what we know best.
we get on vrbo.com and find a place… like a year ahead of time.
its always a gamble… and this year the house was less than stellar in MANY ways… except the location could cancel all of the other things out.
we were right on the beach!
we didn’t have to go up or down 213 stairs to get to the beach or the house.
that was really great!
within minutes the kids were in the water and happy as can be.

we share a house with our friends from Illinois when we go to michigan.
it’s a special friendship when you know you can handle a week in close quarters with 6-7 kids.
this was our sixth vacation together!
IMG_0826
the first thing we do is go get groceries… without kids or dads.
we figure out what we are cooking for the week and work through our list.
it takes forever but then we are set for the week!
IMG_0842
IMG_0894IMG_0904IMG_0912IMG_0922IMG_0926IMG_0872IMG_0861IMG_2623
all these kids just keep growing up!
so rude.
IMG_2626IMG_2629
we almost always end up going on vacation over the week of sean’s birthday.
so on his big 15th birthday we let him choose our activity.
GO CARTS!
and then he even beat everybody!  they definitely weren’t letting him win either.
everyone was trying really hard to get in front but sean won on his birthday.
i like that.
gocartgocarts3gocarts2
and then we played mini golf too!
for all of our activities, Dave had us pair up in teams to compete for washing the dishes that day.
ha ha ha
no one ever chose to be with me or with Jenny! i guess because we are the moms? but guess which team won every ativity?!! Team: Hot Moms! That’s right!  We dominated at all activities and were off Dish Duty all week.  🙂
golfgolf3golf2
on our way we drove by this crazy place and i begged to stop.
because… duh.
it was part statue store – part junk yard.

IMG_1061IMG_2787
i was in love with the old signs!IMG_2786IMG_2802IMG_2783
IMG_1082IMG_1092IMG_1066#jesusselfie

IMG_1071IMG_1089
i’m trying to convince scott to use this for his senior photo in the year book.  🙂

we went to Chili’s for sean’s birthday dinner and rushed back to have birthday cake on the deck before the sunset.

IMG_2808
i sure do like that 15 year old guy.
he is nice.  he is considerate.  he is funny.  he is a big teddy bear.  🙂
IMG_1096IMG_1094
that’s my view for all of our road trips… that smile and saying funny stuff to me all the time.

IMG_1101
my girls learned to play card games at camp… in particular… they learned to play B.S.
talby calls it Bologna Slices.
and that brought a whole new element to vacation.
jake and abby already knew how to play.
it was so funny listening to them try to trick each other.
IMG_1130IMG_1132
now that our kids have all gotten older – they all sleep in!
and they make their own breakfasts!
and even have dance parties in the kitchen.
i like big kids!

the dads leave super early every morning and go golfing.
(whatever… that sounds horrible to me!)
then jenny and i get up hours later and make coffee and sit outside to talk.
and slowly slowly slowly the kids wake up one at a time and peek out to say good morning.
then they would each go back to their electronic device of choice leaving us to talk some more.
around lunch time the dads come back and we all head to the beach.
DREAMY!!!
IMG_1257IMG_1120IMG_0998IMG_1283
skipping rocks is a vacation must.IMG_1294
IMG_1282
IMG_1215IMG_1201IMG_1325
jake brought his Spikeball game.
My kids had seen it on shark tank and were excited to play.

more vacation to come… but this is already long enough.

🙂

what i have read, will read & reading now

these are what i have read this summer:

IMG_2339Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way

i don’t know why i didn’t start this book forever.
i have had it for a long time but i finally opened one afternoon this summer and couldn’t put it down.
and then i got about 3 chapters to the end and closed it because i didn’t want it to be over!
i just finished it this week.
it was really good.  i always have A LOT to think about when i read her books.
i LOVED Cold Tangerines last summer and this was equally good!

SUPERskinnysideways

IMG_2344
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)

I don’t know how it took me so long to get this book?!!
i LOVED her!  I am a pop culture dork and thoroughly enjoyed all her references to show business and hearing how she got her start!
Mindy is way cooler than i already that she was!
and in the book she listed her top ten funniest scenes ever and she mentioned Kaitlin.
NO ONE has EVER mentioned Kaitlin!!!
Kaitlin was one of my most favorites of all the years.
watching those crazy skits i told craig “THIS is what i was like when i was 10! Kaitlin is ME”

when mindy mentioned that she loved Kaitlin, i knew that mindy & i would mostly likely be real life BFFs.

i tried to insert a video but it’s not working… but here is a link to it… KAITLIN.
(it’s totally dumb i know! but picture me at 10 years old & what life was like for adults around me)

SUPERskinnysideways

IMG_0820Counting by 7s
i very rarely read fiction.
and honestly i didn’t know this was fiction when i got it.
🙂  so i accidentally picked a fiction book.
My friend Shannan said it was good & i was getting ready to go on my trip so i just ordered it no questions asked.
it was a heartwarming story for sure.
i really really liked it.
it made me want to read more fiction!

FullSizeRender-23Called for Life: How Loving Our Neighbor Led Us into the Heart of the Ebola Epidemic

oh man.
this book was personal.
i was physically there… next door to Dr. Brantly when he was first sick.
i was in my friend’s living room when they found out their next door neighbor & best friend had contracted ebola.
we all cried and freaked out and worried together.
i have been through the hospital he talks about.
i saw the ebola unit he set up.
i felt like i was reliving that week last summer.
i stayed up late in the night reading this and was totally into it.
i knew the ending but i loved hearing all of what happened from Kent & Amber’s perspective.
SUPERskinnysideways

This is what i am going to be reading:

bookbg

For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards

i can’t wait to hear more from Jen Hatmaker!!

SUPERskinnysideways

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset
Simply Tuesday: Small-Moment Living in a Fast-Moving World

Emily seems to have a way of noticing things that i don’t in the everyday so i am looking forward to hearing her take on this too.

Yes Please

it’s Kaitlin herself.  🙂
why would i read tina fey and mindy kaling’s book but not Amy’s?
duh.
i am definitely reading this one.
i can’t believe i have taken this long… have you watched parks and rec?
we finally are binge watching on amazon.
SO FUNNY – in a totally DRY kind of way.

SUPERskinnysideways

and this is what i am starting today:

Bread and Wine Cover

Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes

since the last two were so good i figured it’s time to start on this right away.
maybe it will inspire me to host a dinner party.
or at the very least… cook dinner for my family?
because honestly that has been a hard thing even this summer.
if it wasn’t tacos, burgers or spaghetti… we ate out.

SUPERskinnysideways

so now…. let’s hear from you!
what are you reading?  what is something i HAVE to read?
i promise to consider all of your suggestions.
even if they are fiction.

Mini Campout in the backyard

our family is busy –  i am guessing yours is too!
finding time to be together as a family can be a challenge as they get older.
there are softball games, basketball tournaments, friends, camps and summer jobs.
even with all the demands for everyone’s time… we are constantly trying to carve out family time any way we can because it is important to us.
so… we had a mini campout!
at home.
on a week night!
making memories doesn’t have to be a big trip…
or cost a lot of money…
you don’t even have to leave your house!
put a tent up in the yard… hang some lights…. bring your pillow & blanket off your bed outside… play some games… turn up the music…
mixing it up is FUN!
campout

IMG_2170

IMG_2167IMG_2165IMG_2171IMG_2159IMG_2161
i had never made sliders and my kids LOVED them!
they are a new favorite for the meal list.
and they had never seen mini cucumbers.
it seems like it is always more fun to eat something when it’s “mini”.IMG_2168IMG_2179IMG_2186
even the drinks were mini!

since it was a MINI campout, we went with a “mini theme menu”
mini
IMG_2187IMG_2157
i pulled out the fancy napkins that we usually save for birthdays or guests.
for something fun and different we ate in the red baskets – aka: mini plates
and every meal deserves the colorful straws!

IMG_0581IMG_0591
i finally got around to planting our pots on our deck!
now we want to be out here as much as possible.
we have an outdoor pretty  living space now instead of just a dusty place to sit.
flowers bring me joy… and i planted A LOT of flowers.IMG_0567IMG_2233IMG_2282
talby & sean set up the tent by themselves.
and even strung those lights!
we brought the couch outside to watch a movie… yes… the white couch.
but you know what?  it’s FUN to just be a little crazy and do something silly like that.
what is going to happen?  the slipcovers are washable.
talby’s words about bringing the white couch outside for a few hours: “YOLO mom!”

we found our movie projector on craigslist several years ago.
we hook it up to our lap top and to our outdoor speakers.
and by WE,  i mean craig… i have no idea how he does those things but he makes it awesome for us.IMG_2265
the kids played the Bean Bag Toss game that we gave Craig for Father’s Day long ago.
they played basketball.
the boys threw the football.
talby worked on handstands.
and everyone played fetch with the dogs.
being at home made all of those things so easy to do.
IMG_2253IMG_2197
i know some people LOVE going camping for long periods and roughing it but… we are not those people.
we are BUSY!
and we like our toilets clean and nearby.
camping at home is something we can always do and my kids will remember it forever.
IMG_2202
we made floats with vanilla ice cream and the Coke minis.
an ice cream float reminds me of being a kid… it brings me back in time.
IMG_2244IMG_2206IMG_2208IMG_2219
YUMMMMM!

talby dished the ice cream but everyone wanted to pour their own Coke & add their own whipped cream.

IMG_2224IMG_2247IMG_2237
there is some teeny tiny proof inside scott’s selfie that i was indeed AT this family campout.  🙂
can you see me?

IMG_2230IMG_2226IMG_2211
i know it’s cliché to say but my kids are growing up so fast!
we only have a few more years to do this kind of stuff together!
i don’t even like thinking about that.
time keeps ticking away… i am so glad we pulled this off to spend more time with each other.IMG_2269IMG_0610
when it got dark enough, craig turned on the movie and we all snuggled in.
we even started off with Mini Movies first – old home videos about 1 minute clips of all my cuties!
my heart was melting at their little voices and toothy (or toothless) smiles.
they always laugh so hard at the funny things they said.
IMG_0614IMG_0628

doing something different makes a regular thursday night into a forever memory!
we plan on doing this much more often.
so if you are coming to visit… be sure to bring your sleeping bag.  🙂
we promise to share the bug spray.
and to make a spot for you on the couch.

12 crafts for kids

i used to make lots of crafts with my kids.
i am not anti-craft now but they are older and its just not how we spend our time together as often.
BUT even if they are from years past… they are still great and fun craft projects!
maybe your kids (or grandkids) are really into art right now?
i put together my top 12 favorites of all the projects i have blogged over the years.

you can click the link underneath to go to the blog post for instructions.

everyone should try this project at least once.  🙂

May Craft Weekend

BLOGstripRNBW1000i was excited to get this Craft Weekend going because i was missing craft time!
i’m always happy to be with Kimberlee again and our two friends Tara & Amy came to help too!
the time just flies by much too quickly…no one is ever ready for sunday to come at CW.

very randomly this group was almost all midwesterners!
we only had one guest fly in – that is the opposite of most CWs.

IMG_1134IMG_6196IMG_5246
we got the house ready room by room…
IMG_1374
did you know the Craft House has rainbow stairs now?!!

🙂   🙂    🙂    🙂

kimberlee served us a delicious meal and then we got right into making ruffled aprons!
i always love to see their color combinations!
i really enjoy helping women learn to sew for the first time.
the talk around the table always turns to their mother’s or their grandmother’s sewing skills too.
sewing with a room full of women is just FUN!

it’s always fun seeing everyone make it their own.

a VERY fun new project we made was this adorable Rainbow Chalk Board Wreath that came all together in a CUTE kit provided by Britni at Giggle This Studios.
the kit comes with the chalkboard backing, the wreath form, fabric, chalk pencil, chalk, ribbon to hang the wreath and a set of examples of chalk art to choose from to trace and create your greeting in chalk AND a fast motion video tutorial on how to put it together

everyone had a really fun time putting these together!
Britni you made it very easy to create an awesome wreath – THANK YOU!

we thought they would make great gifts too!
if you have a crafty friend who is having a birthday coming up… ship this to her!

if you want to make one for your house you can order HERE.
You can use the code WreathKit10 for a 10% discount too!

i like that you can change the message!
“Happy Birthday” when you are having a party… “SUMMER” on the last day of school… baby name when you bring home a new baby!
the chalkboard is rad!

some of our guests added extra ribbon or fabric scraps to make it unique to their style.  🙂
