my kids popped in friday evening to bring me my computer that i forgot at home.
but really they were hoping to get some of kimberlee’s cake.

IMG_7387photo 2photo 5prettycolor
we worked on several projects that were colorful and happy.
everyone loved using the scroll saw and learning how to cut stamps from potatoes.

IMG_7380IMG_7385IMG_7359photo 2
kimberlee’s cinnamon rolls are everyone’s favorite.
i am getting brave and may finally try to make them for my family this summer.
i’ve heard that her recipe is really user friendly… i need that!
🙂

our field trip out to Bearly Makin’ It and their barn of antiques was a success.
but really…. when isn’t it?
everyone found treasures to remember kansas and craft weekend.
the weather was magnificent!!

some old and not-so-old cookbooks.

i scored loads of vintage sheets, an afgan for my oldest’s dorm room and vintage notions at the thrift shop.

we had a weak moment and tried on the wigs.
they claimed they were “new” and they looked “new” so we put them on.
it was so funny… we looked like our moms from our childhood!
photo 5IMG_7313IMG_7317
seriously so many beautiful junky finds!

IMG_7331
we ate on tables built by the guys at the barn.
they build them from found barn wood & porch posts… i love them!
they will make them in any size you want.
i have two BIG ones in the craft house too.

kimberlee’s salad and snacks, outside on a gorgeous day, surrounded by my favorite things = AWESOME.

photo 2-3IMG_7339IMG_7346IMG_7314IMG_7342
this green tool box made it’s way to my kitchen too… i mean… DUH!
it had to!
i had no choice.  😉

kansas was totally showing off last saturday.

IMG_7354
jessica’s pile she brought back from shopping was really fabulous.
that globe is probably the coolest i have ever seen.
she is lucky she saw it before me.  HA!
IMG_7360
saturday night is always full of even more crafting!
laura created this AWESOME wood art project and taught our guests to make it too.
i loved her creativity and then how everyone interpreted it with their own style!

IMG_7362wood artbags
lauren showed us how to use potatoes to make stamps.
it’s always cool to see everyone’s different ideas!
once you start stamping it was hard to stop!

photo 4IMG_3723IMG_3721
we made pom pom garland again.
it is just such a happy project that i think everyone should do it.
we used THESE POM POM MAKERS by Clover.
you should order them… you can thank me later.
you will LOVE it… your kids will LOVE it… and i am willing to bet you will have a hard time stopping!

Laura and Lauren were our helpers this weekend…. SO great!!

DSC_0433
This job is so much fun.
the women are nervously excited when they arrive and they ohhh & ahhh over everything.
they love to create so we provide them with all the supplies to do so!
they love to eat delicious food (of course) so kimberlee spoils them rotten.
they love the friends they come with and they all make friends when they get here.
they share their stories… their tears… their laughter… their hearts with all of us.

i love Craft Weekend.

one year later.

original-24618-1399990904-39
so… it’s been ONE year since i decided enough is enough.
one year ago i took measurements and started changing things.
i changed my diet.
i changed my exercise routine.

i changed my mind.

9381f40afc74185575e03405ac073512

a93446baf6546115aefa980b0fdbe0b1

it’s been one year and i have lost 20 pounds exactly.
that was my goal.
i thought “i will never make it.”
but i just kept pushing through.

TWENTY POUNDS??!!

original-28220-1399990158-351d69f1a6067c1ff7eb623c371c0fd18

what have i  figured out so far that works?

1.  what you eat is the most important part of your health.
if you are not eating healthy REAL foods… you aren’t going to get where you want.
HEALTHY FOOD is the key to losing weight.
period.
getting the processed foods out of my diet is what changed my habits the most.

2339aaa8edf3967eacfcc83983cd1283

2.  exercise is less important than i thought.
but don’t mistake what i am saying there…  i thought before that i just couldn’t lose weight, because i would work out hard and nothing would change.  but i would make poor choices with my food and undo all the work i did working out!
exercise is second to eating right.

16d09b7a0bd28f5a462181796079b730

3. drinking water.
all day.
every day.
no soda.  no sugary drinks.  just water.

47fbc4f86144edffb8056afe32ed91eb

4.  it takes TIME.
it stinks to wait to see results but then suddenly… there they are!
i took out my summer clothes from last year and seriously  5% of them fit.
they were all so big!
patience.
i never would’ve believed you if you’d told me that last summer.
because i didn’t believe in myself!
but that changed too.

8536d63a3916314bd2bd3b21a96969e2

5. sugar.
i did Marta’s sugar detox.  (which you can join her next group.. click on the link)
it was HARD!
but what i learned from it was huge.  i learned that there is sugar added to nearly everything we buy packaged in the store!
no kidding.  EVERY THING.  and that i wanted it.  🙂  not just sweets but the added sugar that i was putting into my body all day long unknowingly.
my brain expects it.
while on the detox for only the 2 week period my belly, the one that housed 5 babies full term & over due… was gone.
i have had a pouchy tummy for like…. ever… it seems.
my oldest child is 19 years old.
i think i just assumed it would always just be there.
well…. on the detox… without filling myself with sugars and eating vegetables, proteins and healthy fats… it was GONE.
if that isn’t a BIG DEAL…. i don’t know what is?!!!

and as i let myself have a few days of laziness and induldging in a few treats… it was back again.
not as bad as before but enough to know that sugar is what is causing it.
i am so glad i did it.

744d56f2f31ef47deba1f22cf45d9376

i loved the 21 Day Fix.
i am not selling it… i am just being honest.
it was wonderful for learning portion control and basically being told what to eat.
i liked that.
i am still doing the workouts because i like them!
this is my newest “plan” for food… because after a bit you will find that you don’t need the containers… you will recognize the correct portion size.
it’s pretty hi-tech.
ha!
photo-62
the 21DAY plan has the number of proteins (R), Vegetables (G),  Fruits (P), Grains (Y), Fats (B) and seeds (O)
broken down by color of container and then how many of each container you get per day.
i am marking which i eat as i go along so i know i am missing at the end of the day and fill in there.
it sounds  a little confusing if you haven’t seen the booklet.
but when you order the program you read though it and you will get it.
so this is my phase two plan of using the system a little more loosely than i was the first 21 days.

IF YOU DO THE 21DAY FIX… do it in a group with Marta!!!
i think you will have much more fun than trying to go it alone.
it’s FUN to work together!

so… that is what i have learned so far.
these are the ways i am losing weight, getting stronger and healthier from the inside out.
it’s hard work.
but it feels so good when you make your goal!!!!

i stood on the scale and saw the number exactly one year later and i was so pleased.
but i immediately set a new goal.
because i know i can do it.
i am sure of it.
God gave me this body and i want to care for it… build it up… make it strong!

how are you doing on your own health quest?
are you feeling excited?  encouraged?  defeated? overwhelmed?  strong?  weak?
what can you do about that?
what is holding you back?
what is making you FLY?

please share.  🙂

Sugar Detox, WHAT? | It's @jennyonthespot! - […] friend Meg of Whatever in this post shared about this sugar detox things she did and that she was going to do it again and everything […]

Harriet - So I am thinking about doing this sugar detox but I’m wondering exactly what it entails? Do you highly recommend it? I have tried giving up sugar before, I just did it for “lent” and did pretty good. But you better believe that when Easter came I was back on sugar and maybe eating more than usual! Yikes. I need something that is going to really stop me from wanting sugar. I am really interested in this. If you could email me with any helpful info/encouragement I would really appreciate it! Thank you!

jennibell - Wow. Thank you for this. I continue to notice how GOOD you look in your pictures. Your face looks younger 🙂 I did do the 21-day challenge and wasn’t exactly impressed with it but did like the workouts — I had to buy heavier weights — yea. Thanks for the sugar information — maybe I’ll try that. I know sugar is in *everything*. . .several years ago my husband tried to cut it out for health reasons and we could barely buy *anything* pre-made. The one thing Marta did convince me of were the “dangers” of wheat and processed food. I have cut w-a-y back. You look great. You are inspiring! Enjoy your summer!!

jen - Congratulations!! It is encouraging to see your amazing progress. It is also interesting to me to read about your experiences and what has worked for you. I’ve always been really good with my eating but not the exercise and haven’t lost weight. I finally decided I need to just bite the bullet and start exercising so we’ll see what happens. I guess we’re all different.

Valerie - Congrats on your progress, Meg! Just wanted to tell you that you inspired me as well. I have been hearing a friend from high school go on and on about Beachbody and Shakeology on Facebook. I was intrigued by the 21 Day Fix, but it wasn’t until you tried it that I decided to buy it and try it myself (minus the shakes). I started my first round May 1st and lost 12 lbs. Yay! I’ve been running on the treadmill for a couple years and haven’t lost anything after I lost the baby weight. My husband was impressed, so we are doing it together this time and he’s sticking with it (I can’t believe it!). I’m not losing much this round, but I think the improvement in eating habits makes it worth it and the weight will go. We weren’t eating too horribly before, but holy veggies! We are buying a ton of produce now! Ha ha. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Necole@seriouslysassymama - I just bought the 21 day fix. It is very difficult for me to get to the gym during the summer, not to mention the snacking that goes on. I am so excited. 125 is my goal, but if I can get out of a size 10, it would make me just as ecstatic.

Janae - Way to go! What an amazing accomplishment! I really need to do the sugar detox to force me to give it up! And getting rid of my post babies pooch would be awesome!

Margo - So, happy for you!! I’ve been working on my health journey for a little over a year and so much of what you said I have thought or felt. I am on day 1 of the 21 day fix now and am so excited to see what it does for me. Keep up the great work!

Lennie Jackson - Please share some before and after photos. They will help us all! Congratulations on sticking to your journey. You are inspiring.

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Meg, I’m so happy for you! Great job on all the hard work!

Tiffany - Good for you!! Every picture of you that you post I think how amazing you look!

Deanne - You do look great! Way to go!

Kristin S - I don’t even know you but so proud of you! Blog-land is super weird like that. We’ve all watched you work hard and shrink.

About 5 years ago I lost 50 lbs. It took over a year. It was WORK. I had been exercising for years with no change. Food was what did it for me. I had to flip a switch.

Now at 43, my body is changing again. No weight gained. Still working out consistently. Belly has returned and things have shifted. It’s pretty discouraging and people at the gym tell me it’s my age. I don’t like hearing that. You’ve intrigued me with the sugar thing. Oh, how I love it! Hmmmm….

Laura H - Fabulous!! I want to see before and after pictures 🙂
You must feel great!

Breanna Moorad - Hi Megan! I found your blog thru Instagram 🙂 I haven’t seen you guys for years, but you will probably recognize the last name?? Anyway, your blog is very inspiring & I have so appreciated your honesty & sense of humor! I am just beginning… again… on my healthier journey! I totally relate to your emotional eating, you wrote about. On another note, I’m enjoying seeing how grown up your kids are & the many other things you share on this blog! God bless! – Bre

jennyonthespot - I am so proud of you my friend!!! That is so, so great! In February I got a book called The Plan and did the 20 day plan – it’s about inflammatory foods. I lost 14 pounds (8 of it in the 20 days)… but have continued to eat according to what I discovered. I have let go a little (May was hard a hard month to choose to eat well). But I am digging back in… going to hit the beginning days of the plan to get my cravings in check and get my energy back and those close feeling comfortable again 🙂

Liz M - You look great. Congratulations. i also did the sugar detox with Marta. I am reflecting on a couple of things:

First, why aren’t we (as a society) doing a better job educating ourselves and our kids about nutrition? I feel AWFUL that I have been feeding my kids crapola disguised as healthy options. We have slowly made some changes around here (some I have been sneaky about, others that I need them to know about) when it comes to feeding our bodies. Honestly, it makes me mad I did now know about this—I have learned so much from Marta!

Second, as a single mama with a tight budget, it is frustrating that foods with no sugar are hard to find, and expensive. The sugar-laden options abound and are much cheaper… It is worth it, but I found I need to balance the appetites of 4 boys (2 home from college this summer) with my desire to offer “real food” I am wondering how you do that with your large family?

Finally, are you trying a lot of new recipes, and do you have favorite sources you can share?

Thank you –you are an inspiration in SO MANY WAYS!

Lisa - I was feeling all motivated and then found out I’m pregnant with #5. Total shocker and feeling crappy so I’m trying to keep active but putting the weight loss on hold. This is a good reminder that one day I’ll get there. Feel proud of yourself! You deserve it!

Renee - I have had a similar journey. I joined the Y and fell in love with Zumba just after Christmas. And I began to try to eat around 1600 calories a day. I automatically gave up almost all refined sugar because I wanted to get the most food for my calories! I do okay with water, and have not been as consistent as I would like, cheating with diet soda. But otherwise, the results have motivated me to stick to it. I have lost 41 pounds in 5 1/2 months. I hope to lose 10 more to get to my ultimate goal of weighing what I did before my kids were born (13 years ago). I know I will get there and I’m not in a hurry. Each little accomplishment is so fun! Especially buying new clothes! I have dropped 3 sizes, which has been so amazing for me. And I actually love to exercise and have found a couple of things that I love so much I look forward to it each day. It takes a while to find your niche, but the work is so worth the result! Thanks for the encouragement!

tonya - way to go, meg!!! i joined weight watchers may 1st and am down 15.2 lbs so far! i’ve made some HUGE changes in my diet these last several weeks…tons more water, fruit, veggies…way less soda and sweets! i’m beginning to increase my daily activity and my fitbit flex has been a great tool for me to keep myself accountable.

thanks for the inspiration and keep rockin’ it girl!!!

Lindsey - Hi Meg!
Thanks for the info. I want to tell you that one of the last pictures that you posted of yourself was AMAZING! You look fantastic. Seriously. Good for you! Very inspirational.

Esther - Do you still drink coffee on your plan, and if so what do you put in it?

Jill - Jill COMMENT two! I did NOT say, congrats Meg!!! REALLY…a HUGE deal! A REALLY BIG, BIG deal!

Jill - I am INSPIRED! I read about ALL the things I WANT to do but do not follow through. The sugar thing is my HUGE obstacle! I am slowly realizing that I need to set a goal and STICK to it. NO! MATTER! WHAT! Your post is my kick me in the butt…you can do it post! Thanks Meg!

Mickie - O.K. You have completely inspired me! I am going to sign up for the 21 day Fix with her (and maybe eventually the sugar thing) when I get back from vacation and moving. So… probably if she offers it again in July. Thanks for the inspiration!

Sami - I have been running for a little over three years. I lost a bunch of weight when I first started because I was completely inactive. I HATE that you’re convicting me to eat healthier! And I love it! I know I need to. I know all the processed and prepackaged food is bad. I am just so overwhelmed with where to even start. Could you tell me one simple thing that I could do to start on a better path? And don’t say remove all sugar or processed food because it will just completely overwhelm me.

chrissi - congratulations on reaching your goal. don’t you just love that? making a goal and reaching what you thought you never could. we rarely get those chances as adults in charge of everyone else. it is huge.
like you, i am eating clean. no processed foods. nothing after seven pm and drinking lots of water. no sugar. lots and lots of veggies and just a few fruits.
i want to be strong too. i am doing pilates. walking alot and trying to figure out my hubby’s home gym. it is slow but rewarding and i love donating the clothes i am growing out of♥

amy - You look amazing Meg! Can you please share your workout routine with your readers; I know you run but what other exercises to you perform? Do you have a weekly program you follow? Thank you so much for sharing your journey. Congratulations you earned it and you look so healthy!

Lisa McCracken - I think this is amazing, Meg, and I am so glad you shared it. I have been in such a rut. I lost 13 lbs. a year and a half ago and I gained it all back because of what I’m eating. I considered doing the sugar detox when you did it, but I thought maybe that was too much of a jump for me a that moment, but I would love to do it soon. I have one question for you….
I know you love your coffee 🙂 what are you using as a creamer?
Thank you and Congrats on your wonderful success!

Jen - Meg, you are an inspiration. I have been cutting back on sugar and upping the fruits and veggies since following your journey here. Thank you for the nudge! I also commend you because you are setting a positive example for your children to follow. Good for you, mama! I hope you have a very wonderful weekend!

Krista - Good for you Meg for keeping it going for an entire year! When I saw the picture of you & your family in front of your old house on moving day and you looked SO TINY– and then that picture of that TINY aqua bathing suit…I knew whatever you were doing was working! I’m on day 5 of the 21 day fix, and I’m down 4 lbs. My shorts feel looser and I actually got to use the last set of hooks on my bra this morning (LOL)– this is a big deal! I have eaten more vegetables this week than I ever had! half the battle is having all of the groceries in the house to be able to follow
the plan properly. I spend much more time in the produce section than in the other sections of the store. I haven’t tried the Shakeology yet, but I think I might have to break down and order it. There are days when I am hungry– not unbearably so, because you eat every few hours– but I think the shake might help. I did break down and have a piece of cake last night because it was my daughter’s birthday, but I planned for that early in the day and “saved” my blue and orange cups and a few tsps for that purpose. The workouts are hard, and my body is sore, but I’m working parts of my body that aren’t getting used by just running. I find that I have to pause the DVD here and there because the pace of the workout is a bit fast for me but I’m hoping at some point I’ll be able to keep up wither her.

Good Luck to you and I love your posts, please keep them coming!

Jenn - Congratulations! And you are so right. I’ve heard it time and time again 80% diet, 20% exercise and I’ve put that to the test. Yep, you are most definitely what you eat. Exercise is important, but you gotta eat right, eat less and exercise. I’ve said this tons of times….its that simple. Again, congratulations on goal achieved. I know you feel good! I’ve been there too!

Amy - I am doing the sugar detox with Marta right now. It’s rough….but I’m learning so much! Just curious.. Did you stick with it after the 14 days? Or did you go back to sugar?

Amy Woods - Congrats! I love reading your blog and I’m so happy to hear you met your goal and are making more goals.

I am very overweight. As in if I lost 20 lbs no one would be able to tell overweight. What are your thoughts on the 21 day fix for someone who has 100 + lbs to lose? Do you think it is a good starting point?

Oh..and I ordered two pillow shams from you this week! Can’t wait until they get here! 🙂

Beth Ann - Congrats Meg!!! That is AWESOME!!!!! Way to work hard and enjoy the rewards! I have keep going in phases where I eat really healthy & clean and then no so much. It is hard with a husband and 3 littles and summer (boating & beverages & firepits & relaxing….) I am TRYING again to eat clean, but we will see. Again, congrats to you!!!!!!

Leslie Coryell - Great job Meg! This post is so encouraging. Most people roll their eyes when I say I need to lose 10-20 pounds, because I am tall and appear to be thin. But I have that mom pouch too, it annoys me. I can’t wear cute shirts because of the muffin top, I find myself layering and loving tunics instead. In reality, I just need to commit. Commit to better food, exercise, and a routine. Thanks for sharing this post it is an eye opener that it is possible with dedication. 🙂

Tara L - Thanks for this update, I recently decided to improve my health also. I have lost 10.25 pounds. It’s slow and steady which is best. I have been clean eating and walking most days. I mostly walked a 5K a little over a week ago, and yesterday I was able to mostly run it. And it felt great to push myself and finish. You have been an inspiration and an encouragement to me, thanks.

Jenna - Wow! Amazing, Meg. Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration.

stephany - This is AWESOME, Meg!
I need to make some changes (eating better, drinking more water). You have motivated me. I turn 39 in less than 2 weeks…by the time I am 40 I want to lose the weight and be in the strong, lean body I am hoping for!
Thanks for the motivation!!

Tiffany - Congratulations to you.

Jamie - Thanks for the inspiration! I am at the very beginning of my journey (2 weeks in) to better health and I felt such relief reading that it took you a year to accomplish this. My daughters and I had a blast drawing from your Crazy Owls video and I was thinking at the time, “She looks so great!” Your skin is glowing and you look so fit and strong! Way to go!

Hannah - I joined Slimming World in August 2013. I lost about 21 pounds before finding out that I was pregnant. I’ve got put some (a lot!) of the weight back on so at this point I’m 36 weeks pregnant and have lost 8lbs off what I weighed in August. It is a little heartbreaking when I know close I was to my goal but at the same time it’s good weight. It’s supposed to be there and it has a purpose. Baby is due to arrive in about 4 weeks time, my brother’s wedding is in 12 weeks. So in theory there’s little/no reason why I can’t be at half a stone (7lbs) if not a stone (14lbs) lighter come the wedding. I get it might not be possible and I might be aiming to too high but I want to at least try.

Karina - The part which really hits the nail on the head is where you say you’d had enough. Until YOU decide to do this thing, nothing will work. I have been creeping up the scale as I creep closer to 50 years old, and eventually I just got so disgusted that I was able to make the necessary changes – no set program, in my case, but the DECISION to eat better and move more. I already eschew pop and don’t like fast food or eat junk food – part of me was resistant because I felt like I shouldn’t be getting fatter on what was already a pretty good lifestyle (I was insulted by my own body’s betrayal of me). But there is always that second helping, that sweet tooth, that resistance to putting on running shoes. I threw out my 19 year old sneakers and got new ones, and a few really good bras – amazing how much difference that made right there – you walk a lot lighter if your boobs are not in the way! My poor dog gets dragged on little power walks before breakfast a few times a week now…she doesn’t want to leave her basket but I haul her along anyway. I have lost seven pounds since April. I am certain this is mostly from seeing the truth in the mirror…and from how much BETTER I feel after even three little walks a week. If you can’t afford a program, don’t feel like you can’t fix this thing on your own! Meg is right: you need to look after your body. But until YOU decide this – really decide it – nothing will change.

Carrie - Thank you so much for saying this took a year. I do something for a few weeks and then feel like I have zero results so I give up. I might invest in the 21 day fix. My problem, sadly, is sticking with something!! Keep the posts coming, I have a feeling you are motivating more of us than you know

jody - Meg
Can you talk more about how you manage eating “clean” while cooking for your kids & husband? How do you manage with all the snacks in the house? I find this the hardest part. Thanks! You look great. …:-) your hard work has paid off.

Carol S. - This is wonderful and a great inspiration for many. I’ve had a year of focusing on low carb and getting results (down 10) followed by periods of relaxed standards (up 5) and am basically treading water and ok with that. I’d love to be down 20, but understand I must be okay with where I’m at because I like my Ultra beer on weekends, a few fries from my sons plate, and a few savory snacks at bunko or bookclub. My husband is my worst motivator, he loves my curvy figure, lol, so at 51 we will see what the next year brings. Health is number 1!! I am on day 6 of the 30 day Ab challenge, starting to become unpleasant but I’m sticking with it (albeit modified and ramped down a tad for me.). Keep going Meg!

Amanda - so funny, our brains were in sync today. I just posted a few hours ago about the clean eating challenge I start Monday. I TOTALLY get what you’re saying about exercise coming 2nd to food. Last year I worked out so hard…and did not lose weight. This year, starting in January, I started eating real food and cutting out TONS of processed stuff, and I have been down 8 pounds from last year…and that was with NO working out. Now I’m starting to work out, AND get serious about this food. I’m so excited to see how different I’m going to feel (and look) because of this challenge! We start with a 5 day raw challenge….yikes!! It DOES feel so good to finally take back control!! I need to see you in person so I can get even more pumped about all of this!!

Liezel - Thank you for sharing, I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been and that includes pregnancies, I go on diets…loose some and you guessed it, put it all back on and then some. So yes I have stopped believing in myself. I must loose weight again and do it for my health. Hats of to you, you look great 🙂

Alicia @ Investing Love - Congratulations! This is so great!!! I know firsthand about the diet thing. Nothing is as important.

Angela - Congrats!!!! I am genuinely so happy for you if not a bit jealous! lol You rock and your entire journey has been inspiring me for months, little by little with every post of yours on this topic I keep thinking I need to just try! Thanks for sharing whats worked for you.

Kelly - I’m at just a little over a year since making the decision to do the same thing. I have used several Beachbody programs too (different coach 😉 ) and had such great results. It is the eating that’s the key though! That’s been the hardest change for me for sure! My next goal is to get into a size S/M. I’m less concerned about the number on the scale as I am about the way I feel and look. I was an uncomfortable L/XL when I started last April and am a happy medium right now but I would love to get into a S/M!
Thanks for continuing to share your story! It’s been an encouragement to me!

Robyn - Way to go Meg! It is not an easy journey! I’ve been eating really healthy for the past 5 months, almost no sugar or processed foods, so I understand what you’ve been going through. I’ve also been exercising a ton! But unfortunately my body is not wanting to show any results :p but I do feel really good about my efforts and will keep trying, and hopefully my body will soon decide to let me see the results of all my hard work!

Sarah M - I’m reading this thinking, yes I totally feel like enough is enough. I’ve started running again but my diet totally sucks. I have four kids (8,7,3,2) and I feel like there isn’t enough time. Even as I type it it feels like an excuse. Do you remember what it was like when you had tiny people? Did you feel constantly tugged every which direction with never a moment to yourself and when you got that moment all you wanted to do was take bath in silence with some wine? In my mind I know I would be a better wife and momma if I explicitly made more of an effort for my own health but where does that more come from? You’ve been in the trenches with kids for a long time. How do I not feel selfish about taking the time I need to get healthy and not feel like I’m shirking responsibilities? Should I have this figured out by now?

Bethany - Would you recommend doing the 21 Day Fix or sugar detox first?

Kristi REDISKE - Congratulations-sounds like you made your mind up and that you were very determined! I have a bad habit of going to sonic everyday to get a diet vanilla dr pepper-sometimes 2 times , I need to give that up and drink water, it would even be a money saver!!! Maybe I will try at least that.

Anne G. - I just signed up for Marta’s group. Like you I’ve been running and have lost about 15 lbs in the past year. But I can’t seem to lose any more now because I’ve gotten into the habit of filling up with sugar. I’ve wanted to do a sugar detox, but never thought I had it in me to quit. But I’m fed up with my pooch I have after my two kids. Ready to see it go and besides I’m supposed to be training for a half marathon I’m doing in August and I haven’t had a lot of energy so far to run greater distances. Since I have until June 23rd for the next group to start I guess I better eat up my ice cream I have stashed and my candy bars (also stashed).

Jill Assman - Congratulations, Meg!!! How great! I have been sugar detoxing for four days. And drinking water ALL day. I am already feeling better. Thank you for your real life sharing. It is always nice to hear that others go through similar things and to get inspiration from their experiences. I am having a very difficult day today, wanting something yummy SO bad. But reading your post has helped me to stick with it! Thank you! Cheers and here’s to achieving healthy goals!!!

craigslist is rad.

on memorial day i got my husband to go with me to pick up a dining room set i found on craigslist.
photo-61
i am super pumped about it.
i was searching for a round table and found a whole set that is grandma chic.
i have sanded it all down already.
i know for sure the chairs and table will be white.
it’s just what i do… paint everything white.
but the hutch is MADE for a color!
it needs it!

photo-60
the problem is WHICH COLOR???

the possibilities are so great!
what do you think?
do you like any of those options?
obviously they are all in the green palette in some form… but which green would you pick?

or would you choose a complimenting color TO the green?

would you paint it all one color or the inside different than the outside?

so many choices!!

AND then choosing fabric on the chairs will be really difficult too.
but i love thinking about this kind of thing.
color is happy in all it’s forms.

Heather - I vote any aqua!! I heart aqua!!

Alicia @ Investing Love - Gahhhhh! I have NO IDEA! But its gonna be so great!!! It seems you have a lot of blues and greens in mind. I would paint the outside and line the inside with book pages or pretty wallpaper or something.

Julia - Hi there…I am not sure if you read all 400 comments on here, but check out our blog, http://www.itsbetterthannew.blogspot.ca and scroll down to check out our hutch we painted last week. We added bead board to the back and gave it white shelves. It really brightened it up! Do a fun colour, in chalk paint and add the white to the back! It will tie in your white kitchen!

april r - my 2 cents? paint the inside a lighter shade. love all those greens, I’m partial to a sea glass or grey green. I’m doing a chifferobe in a light green this weekend so seeing your color palettes is exciting 🙂

jenn - I’d lean towards a complimentary shade of green to your green stools. Maybe a shade lighter (since it is a big piece of furniture)…like a complimentary mint/jade green. That is a hot color right now. If you want a pop in the back….use some cool paper or something removable so you can change it down the road if you change your mind! Or grass cloth in the back? That would be fun and textural without fighting against the fun pop of color. Or paint the hutch white like the chairs and table and just paint the inside a pop of color. We did that with the built ins in our dining room (corner hutches). The walls are a pale robin’s egg blue and the built-ins are white so we used a burnt orange and it is fun and unexpected!

Jen - I am partial to the Punch Buggy palette because those shades of green are good neutrals that look good with pops of BRIGHT colors like reds, pinks, blues, etc., which we all know you LOVE! FUN!!

deb meyers - center color on the “door hues” palette: the periwinkle-y grey will support green and coral tones and look amazing.

Tobi - You’re doing green stools right? Then I’d go with a red or pink. Then you can get chair fabric with both colors to tie them together. I can’t wait to see it!

Jolene @ Homespun Heritage - Kiwi! Anything close to kiwi! Its my latest obsession among the obnoxiously bright colors….my other fave is mango but your not leaning that way. Go big or go home…oh wait, you are home!

Marilyn M> - I think it needs a red tone like the color of the poppy one. If everything else is white and the seats are patterned the color pop will pull it all together.

tracy fisher - some kind of turquoise… it goes with everything! and it’s happy.

Chris - What a great set! I would paint the hutch a light rasberry color – to complement the green in your kitchen. You could pick fabric that brings the two colors together to link the two rooms. But you really don’t need my advice at all. I’ve been to the craft house:)

Ruthanne - I agree with others who have said that it is best to pick the fabric first, then find a color in it to paint the hutch. Good luck! Happy hunting!

pam - so fun! you can’t go wrong, whatever you do. for some reason i’m seeing it a really pretty grey and a bold color inside via wallpaper or bright white inside if the dishes/ items you put inside will be colorful…can’t wait to see what you do! xo

laura oyler - when you said “grandma chic” I started cracking up. I would paint the inside and outside the same color, but probably put fabric or wallpaper or stencil the back on the inside.

Lisa - I like the far left green on the paint-brushed canvas for the outside, and then paint the inside the beautiful coral that is on the far right paint colors of the poppy picture. Happy colors!

Linda G - I love green, but something about that furniture says “deep eggplant purple” to me.

emily - You go the opposite order of me. I find fabric I can’t live without, and then pick my color from there!

Kristen K. - My vote: I’m loving that middle green, for the “jenilysilva.com” pic (with the big ol’ succulent)…that deep green is a bit retro, a bit modern…and can act as a neutral base color for all seasons / styles! Thank you for sharing your home & your projects with us – colors and decor aside, your house became a home as soon as YOUR FAMILY moved in! You are a blessing to all of us in the bloggysphere…Many blessings back at ya!!!

Robin C - You’re going to need more than one hutch. Obvs!

Joanie - I used to work with your Aunt Jan and she introduced me to your blog over 5 years ago. What a great surprise when I saw that MSN Living referenced you for their article on “50 Things to Do this Summer in 50 States”! Love the blog and have shared it with others.

Kori - um…I just tripped out a little bit because I saw another commenter with the same name as mine (I don’t see the same spelling very often!) and I didn’t want you to think I was a weirdo who commented all over your post…although now I guess I just did! 😉

I have to say, though, that I agree with her color opinions, especially the part about the gray, that could be super cool!!

Kori - My favorite color combo of late is a form of green with some type of watermelony color or maybe a mangoish hue with aqua accents. Or really any combination of those four.

I definitely think the hutch needs two colors! I love love love a hutch with a fun inside color!!

andrea - This one’s easy….I’ve got your back on this one…..boxwood green Miss Mustard Seed!!!! (ps….I have ordered some….I have a dresser that sits in our entry (holds kids hats, gloves, flags…..)…it will soon be boxwood green!!!!

Laura H - Oooo lala……at first I thought I was only going to have to choose from those first 5 colors on that little tab thingie at the top, but then I scrolled all the way down, and my head is a spinnin! So much crazy color! I love green I wanted to scream!
But, but…..I love that blue under the Popsicles! It speaks to me…..it tells me “it’s only paint” You can always, always repaint it if you don’t like it! HA!
Can’t wait to see it! Love your blog so so much!

eva - Great find, and good ideas on painting!

My pick for you is in the first colour palette, opposite the succulents, the last swatch.

karen - I like the last green…. and pair it up with some orange in the seat cushions or somewhere – it will look great!

Kimberly - Miss mustard seed boxwood green– so pretty!

Shellie - I really like the pinky, peach, coral tones. You could paint the inside white like the table and chairs and put green dishes and display pieces inside. Your bar stools are green, so I would mix it up a bit. You always make great decisions though!

Kerry - The white Popsicles on ice – swoons !! Have fun painting your awesome score!

Jess - Ohh GOODNESS… this blog post is one of the most visually pleasing things I’ve seen in a long time!! I love those soft pinks, mossy greens, and vibrant turquoises–but no matter what you pick, it’ll look fantastic against the future white of the tables and chairs!

kimberly oyler - i’m so glad you aren’t someone who is afraid to paint wood. my mother, bless her heart, never lets me paint anything like this cause i’ll “ruin the beautiful wood.”

whatever. paint that sucker white.

Becky Kindel - I love the color on the stucco house with the flowers in the window. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

Tracy - I can’t wait to see what you do!!!!!! I have an old hutch that is screaming for color too. I also have a round table with windsor chairs that are going to be painted as well. Mine are for our basement family room, so I plan to go pretty BOLD 🙂

lara sheriff - love the colors in the iced summer picture!!!!!!!!!!

Gina - Good luck picking a color out of all those. 😉 I like the green #ABBD63)from the first picture. Can’t wait to see it all painted!! 🙂

jaimie - Great set! I’d probably go w/ some shade of green to tie into your green kitchen stools….then maybe do some fun patterned wallpaper w/ some complimentary colors for the inside of the hutch? not sure if it’d be too much if you have a fun pattern for your chair fabric. I’m sure you’ll turn it into something fantastic no matter which way you go. Good luck!

Jenn - So exciting! I would go with a pear or minty green. I would definitely paint the inside something different, orange or yellow. Please share once you finish it! By the way, doing the crazy owls this friday….looking forward to it.

Laurel - LOVE it! I’m all about Annie Sloan Chalk paint these days. you can paint ANYTHING! and no sanding or prep!!!! My hubby is very very afraid that I will paint every wood surface we own-and I might:) giggle. They mean it about everything-the girl from AS was sitting on a silk sofa she painted. I am not that brave but wow!

Still dreaming and waiting for my time at craft weekend-I know it’s coming when I will really need it!!

Jer - Pick the chair fabric first then pick your paint by pulling out a color in the fabric.

tasha roe - i forgot to mention that anthro has a bunch of those latte bowls in various greens and aquas, & teals right now. I bought some for my kitchen and some from world market. they would look darling in your new place!!

Lora - WAY too many choices. All beautiful! Good luck 🙂

Karina - It will look amazing whatever you choose, but this one makes me think of you and your style…you could do the inside a pale blue or yellow or just white:
http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/4d/b2/c6/4db2c69dfca1fb1ff55f6f951af9bf7f.jpg

Gabby - That patinaed teal with the distressed look is really neat!

SoCalLynn - I love it! I’m getting ready to paint a small cabinet “New Avocado” which is a new green color from Valspar. All of the color palettes you’ve shown are gorgeous!

Darcie - You are speaking my language with all those greens. I can’t get enough of that color! And maybe with a white or yellow inside? So fun! My husband looks at me like I’m crazy when I try to do stuff like you do. Maybe someday I’ll convert him! Way to go, Craig!

Kori - From the very first picture I was envisioning it in a green like in the ‘punch buggy’ (the bug palette) with an inside that compliments the fabric you put on the chairs…I like the idea of a grey, but that might be too neutral for you? Do you need more punch? Either way – that set was a GREAT find! 🙂 Have fun!

colleen - Okay here is the link to my favorite color combination for a hutch
http://www.pinterest.com/pin/417920040392799666/
love your style and your spirit meg!

heather e. - Oh, I am thinking it would really pop if it was an apple green-y color. Maybe the inside back you could wallpaper with something that compliments the chair fabric? Love that set, major craigslist score!!

Alex - I have always loved the look of painting the interior with an accent color, like the secretary in Kiki’s guest room. http://kikis-list.com/2013/08/07/our-guest-bedroom/
They gray could also work with a nice blue-green interior as well.

Dana - oh man, a pale blue-green goes so well with white. (I love the palettes with the weathered wood, the popsicles, and the patinaed wall!) it’s my absolute favorite. and you can paint the inside a light gray. different but not too in-your-face, ya know?

Hannah - I like a minty green or a pale grey – do you know where you’re going to put your unit? For example in our living room we have green walls and white radiators – so white bookcases kind of work (Although we have a black one that we used to have in our old flat)

Sami - That hutch is A-MAZING! I’ve been to your craft house so I know you are good at picking colors! I love that your first reaction is to paint everything white. It’s part of what I love so much about the craft house. Well, that and all the awesome colors you decorated it with. 🙂

martha - the colors in the first photo are beautiful! bright, but not too bright. the kind of color that you don’t become sick of looking at. the hutch is so cool….I would definitely paint the inside a different color….I think it would reflect your personality if it was more than one color! 🙂

Stephanie - What a luscious post.
Indigo and deep jade green are my favorites lately. But boy, do I love that poppy red too!

tasha roe - wow! Wow! WOW!!!! That is the find of the century!
I’m pretty sure that hutch needs to be aqua or a teal.

Here are some of my faves
Mayo Teal, BM
http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/mayoteal

Mermaid Green
http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/mermaidgreen

Green Coral
http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/greencoral

Caribbean Cool
http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/caribbeancool

I’m so excited for you!! Blue and green are my favorite colors and favorite colors together! It’s going to be so awesome!!

amy jupin - this is trippy–before i even scrolled down i thought to myself “that hutch needs to be kelly green.”

i’m officially weirded out.
by myself.
{insert twilight zone music here.}

Sheena - I love to use chalk paint for furniture. So many great colours too. I would do the inside white so whatever you end up displaying in there will really pop.

Jennifer Andrews - Maybe you could find the chair fabric first and pick your green from the fabric. Just a thought.

Jori - I’d say pick out the fabric first and then find a green in it to paint the hutch. It’s much harder to do it the opposite way–I speak from experience!

Carol S. - Great set, love the chair backs and hutch bottom door detail. The fish and lily pad color palate is my favorite…has your cream. Hutch in either a green or yellow, maybe the darker water color in curtains or placemats … Tho do you ever do dark lol. Fun project, hope you use it for a bit and don’t have to wait until its all done to enjoy its great function, it’s really pretty as is, too. Seats could be a little awkward without bottoms…but…

Kathryn - If you like that, you should make a trip to the Henderson (Nebraska!) garage sales next Saturday. The trash to treasure possibilities will be ENDLESS!! (Bring a trailer)

kathi - Oh Meg – what a score! That hutch screams out ombre to me! You can use several shades of green and that last photo with different hues is perfect. With that you can even leave the inside as is. Can’t wait to see the finished set.

Jenny - I like the subtle mint green tones of PUNCH BUGGY – don’t forget that buffet is big piece. I also like the sage green tones of the second last palette.
I am really enjoying watching your new house come together from the other side of the world.

karen - I love the green #ABBD83 on the first color swatch. We had our kitchen cabinets painted and this green is kind of like the green we used on the bottom cabinets. We had the top cabinets and pantry painted white. We love the combination!
So excited to see everything come together for you!

crazy owls

so summer is here.
the kids are home with no routine.
how does it creep up on me every single year?!!
we need that summer list made.
we need a plan and a bit of a schedule.
more reading and drawing.
less tv.
more crafting and baking.
less screen time.
more swimming.  more sunshine.
less basement darkness with video games.

on friday… i started this project and it didn’t go too well… at first.
there was crying and door slamming and drama.
it had nothing to do with the project but everything to do with moods, feelings, sleep deprivation and new routine.
but i stuck with it.
i knew my mood needed adjusting too so i stayed right at that table with my owl i drew and kept on coloring… for like an hour!
coloring makes you feel better – it’s a fact.
and then one kid came back, saw the nearly finished project and said “WHOOOOA! Can i make that too?!”
🙂

and even after that… “WHOOOAA!!!  annie did YOU draw that? I want to make one too! how did you do that?!”
i got to listen to her teach it from the other room.
pretty rad.
IMG_7108IMG_7106
what i say in the video (in case you don’t feel like watching) is that this is Continuous Line Drawing.
(or continual line? i don’t know)
it’s where you draw but don’t lift up your pen when drawing… everything is connected.
it’s very flowy and swirly.
not many straight lines… just letting the pen move freely.
then filling in each spot with color.

IMG_7113
IMG_7132
i made a super amazing video on how we made these owls!
just kidding.
i made a very average video of me drawing an owl for over 3 minutes.
but it may help you overcome your fears if you watch it so that you can make this project with your kids… i hope.

annie is a very professional videographer…  🙂

owl2
these were a few different designs we drew.
and then you can see this one side by side of the drawing and the colored in drawing.owl1IMG_7134
each section… each time a line intersects with another we changed colors.
almost.
these take a long time to color but totally worth it.

IMG_7132IMG_7133
you could use crayon… colored pencil… oil pastel… or markers like we did of course.owl3owl4owl5IMG_7131IMG_7128

now get going.
continuous line drawing is calling you.
and of course you could draw anything… it doesn’t have to be an owl!

Ashley - Thank you so much for sharing this awesome activity! We did this as part of our homeschool activities today and my kids LOVED it!! It was so much fun!

Continual Line Drawing | tinyartroom - […] I am so loving these continual line drawings of owls that my 3rd graders are working on. It is so hard for some of them to let go of perfection. Su - Just wanted to let you know that my daughter and I did these with a group of girls at a craft camp we run. Since they take such a long time to color, this is what they worked on if they arrived a little early or finished a project before everyone else or were waiting for their mom to pick them up. Kerry - My soon-to-be 7 yr old made an owl today and did a really good job! I think she did better than her mom ; ) Thanks for the idea! (and my kids love your video…especially when you say “oops! I lifted my pen!”)

Seriously Sassy Mama - How fun. That would certainly keep my three girls busy!

kelly owens - these are amazing! My 7 year old is working on hers right now and loves this idea! She asked if you had other animals or patterns to share? If you guys make more please please post because this was a huge hit! thank you for your awesome video.

Julie C. - My kids and I did this project yesterday and we loved it! Thank you for the video tutorial, it was critical to our success! We’ve done many of your art projects in the past, this was definitely one of our favorites:-) Thank you!!!

Amy - I thank you so much for this!! I am only somewhat crafty and at first this looked difficult, but the video inspired me to try it with my 5-year-old and we sat and colored for a couple hours that morning. She did two of them and wants to do one with her daddy now too! 🙂 I told him that night that it just helped our day get off to a good start by me taking the time to do this. Thank you for the many ideas you list on here! Please keep them coming 🙂

Lisa - My 8 year old daughter and I did these today. I home school her, and it was a fun thing to do to end our last day of school. Thanks for sharing such a cute idea. I’m thinking of using it at a church function that I plan for the kids as well.

meredith - just made one! perfect art therapy!

melissa - love love love!! thank you so much for posting a video! definitely getting on this project asap! 🙂

Seamingly Sarah - Oh, you have drama too? I thought my six year old was the only one bringing it to the table these days. 🙂

I love this idea, I’ll add it to our summer list. Unfortunately “summer” for us doesn’t start until June 24th. Yuck.

Sara - I totally plopped down at the table during the baby’s nap yesterday and followed your video tutorial and started coloring! It was so hard to stop when the baby woke up! It was just the mental vacation I needed. Thanks for posting the video (thanks, Annie! great job!).

At first there was music drowning out your voice and I was wishing that you or Annie hadn’t done a music track because I couldn’t hear you talking us through the owl drawing. Then I realized that my Pandora station had automatically turned on when I opened the laptop. Ha! It was nice to hear your voice after reading your blog for so long (once I turned off the loud music…). 🙂

tara - in love.
can not WAIT to do this with my kiddos.
wonder if i can coax my boys into doing it with me?
lydia and i will BEG.

Kristin - These are so amazing! I need to draw and sit more. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

Stephanie - Thank you for lending this completely unartsy mom some inspiration!

Lisa - Love, Love, Love this idea. Thank you for always sharing and inspiring us.

Karina - I love these…I will be referring to your blog this summer when I introduce craft activities…long overdue, but better late than never, right? Our school doesn’t let out until the end of June, so I have lots of time to pin ideas! (I still need to know how you painted your railings, btw…please!)

Routhie - This is a great idea. My kids and I have to be out of our house after I pick them up from school tomorrow, so depending on their moods and the humidity, we could be at the park or sitting in a coffee shop. I’ll definitely bring everything for this in case they want to stay indoors.

Kristen K. - Meg, what a PERFECT project for artsy owl-lovers like us! I really love how yours turned out. THANK YOU! We still have 2+ weeks of school here in Philadelphia, but I’m hoarding ideas for summer like my life depends on it!!! Oh wait, it DOES! Our 4 tend to sleep too much, eat too much, whine nonstop, and beg to swim at Grammie & PopPop’s incessantly. And I just wanna craft! So this is just what we needed…thank you!!! Will be praying for you and yours, and the awesome goals of sun/fun/unplugged summer time!

Kerry - Meg this is SO cool!!! And easy enough for me to try even though I have ZERO drawing skills 🙂 Loved seeing you on Video again too! Kerry x

Julie - These are beautiful, all so individual, love the expressions on all their faces, especially love all that colour. Might be one of my weekend projects, while the hubby and kids are away. HMMMM

Dawn - I love this!! You actually make me feel like maybe I could do this.

Rebekah - I’m totally doing this with my girls this summer. Thank you!

Sami - But owls are in. And fun and cute and did I say fun? I’m SO doing this. Kids or no kids!

Marla - 10 month old in bed…husband at work….Totally just did an owl, turtle and a butterfly. love.

Kimberly - How cute!

Lori - Meg – you inspire me to be creative!!! From the pictures I would have said NO WAY! I can’t do this! But your video made it seem possible. Thank you, Meg! If you were to post a video once a week with either a kid or adult project like this – I would pay tons of money to subscribe! =) A virtual craft house!!

Amy K. - Those are amazing – adding them to the list for Make Something Monday, from a schedule I found here: http://www.somewhatsimple.com/summer-schedule-for-kids/ We have done it here for the last 3? years, and my kids like it so much, we use it for spring break too!

Jenn - Okay, these are awesome! We will be doing these. Thank you!

Kristen - Love this idea! And I’ve totally been stalking your blog waiting for the summer list . . . we made our own list last summer and are going to do it again this year!

Jamie - Thank you for posting this! School is out on Thursday and I cannot wait to try this with my kids!

Lorie - I am absolutely adding this to my girls summer crafts!! I love doing continuous drawing doodles and coloring them in different colors like you mentioned, but never thought of drawing something other than an abstract doodle! I love it!!

Katie Skiff - Love this. I think I’d have to draw for my 8yo, but then again, she might enjoy trying this. Good idea!! 🙂

Sue Linse - I can’t get the link to the video to work. I like to see you live…like you were still teaching crafts at MOPS 🙂

Deb Meyers - Love those owls! In college we did a self-portrait exercise where you look in a mirror and draw your self continuous(ly?)… don’t lift pencil… WITHOUT looking at the paper. Very fun!

Go gentle on yourself… new house, end of school… lots of replenishing needed. It won’t be long until screen time is not as attractive.

dm

Kristin F. - I am buying supplies for these today!! Thanks for the lovely inspiration.

Lisa - Oh my gosh! I love these! So very cool!

Kimberlee Jost - LOVE IT.
Raining day prepared…to do OWLS!

Amy Woods - Eeeek! You make me wanna have more kiddos! I only have one. My sweet 16 year old boy…Hmmm. I bet he’d do this with me! I’ll bribe him!! Thanks for sharing. You are a precious momma. 🙂

Gina - I love coloring too. I used to always have a coloring book and fresh crayons – even in college. Now I just doodle and color in. I can’t wait to make an owl. : )

the new house – month one

so people keep saying “when are you going to show us your house?”
and i have been like “it’s not even close to done?!”
but then today i rethought that.
i decided how will you know what is different if i don’t show the stages?
so here is our house after living here one month.

IMG_3713
when you first walk in the door this is what you see.
complete with swimsuits on the dining room table.
IMG_3711
the door by waffle goes out to the patio area and back yard.
we have ikea couches on their way to live with us.
there are still boxes in the corners of art supplies… i am not sure where to put them yet.
IMG_3697
the dining room.
i have fabric (hobby lobby) to make some simple curtains… love straight stitching projects!
photo 1
i have an old chandelier covered in old crystals to hang here.
but i have to paint it first.
i think it is safe to say there is a lot left to add in this space.
ha!
IMG_3693
the entire main floor is Seashell Gray by Valspar.

IMG_3695
front door is now on the right.
remember before when it had carpet?
for as many accidents that stanley has had since we moved in… hardwood was a smart move.
and it’s pretty.
IMG_3705
when you are in the kitchen you can see the whole first floor.
i like that!
IMG_3707
down the hall is a bathroom & 3 bedrooms.
we have only worked on our bedroom so far.
we put hardwood in here and painted.
i don’t feel like you can acurately tell the color of gray because of the light from the windows.
we chose Foggy Mirror by Valspar.
IMG_3684IMG_3692
i am so excited (and nervous) to attempt to make this buffet look like this one.
i found an expert to walk me through it and she had all the supplies in her shop too!
photo 2
THANKS jodi!
i will take pictures as i go!
this will be my first ever milk paint project… i am a little scared!

IMG_3682
i was planning on painting our bed but then i changed my mind.
it’s staying dark wood.
it’s manly and looks good with the gray walls too.
photo 3

IMG_3689
i have curtains to hang that i got from West Elm.
i picked up the curtains rods and hardware this week.
ready for a little more privacy and not so much light in the mornings!

IMG_3678
we have his and her closets in this house.
it rocks.
we had that ikea shelf for over ten years and four houses!
it’s perfect to hold my jewelry now.
and the necklaces are hanging from 3 key hangers from target.

IMG_3683
we started painting the cabinets in the master bathroom.
we will continue the Foggy Mirror on the wall in the bathroom as well.
and paint all the cabinetry and molding white too.

IMG_3699
back out to the kitchen…

the island is going to have legs on the corners but they are back ordered.
the door by the fridge had to be replaced so that is why it’s missing.
IMG_3700
i went with green stools for the island seating.
i ordered two from walmart.com
i bought two at an antique store (and we need to cut them down 5 inches).
one i already had in my old craft room.
and one i found on craigslist and spray painted it.
my mom & dad grabbed two at a flea market last weekend that will fit right in.
the white chair is just visiting from the craft house.

i chose to leave the area around the window very open.
it took a lot of deciding and made lots of people give their opinions.
🙂
i am sure i will fill it with art work or something cool over time.

the light fixtures are from Menards.

IMG_3702
the island turned out just the way i drew it.
so many lovely drawers.
and we use the mixer and ninja everyday so i like having easy access but LOVE having it off the counter.IMG_3701
we need to paint the outside of the front door!
we painted the back but forgot the front.IMG_3714
this is the designated computer area.
i have no idea what i want to do with this space.
it’s a wreck.
and everyday there are MORE papers!
many kids means many reminders and schedules.

the laundry room and pantry is the dark room on the left of that picture.
my favorite part of the laundry room is there is a SINK!!!
for the first time in my whole life i have utility sink.
i love it.

there are more bedrooms, a bathroom, a family room and a game room in the basement.
i go down there to say goodnight to kids and once to watch a movie.
otherwise i don’t do basements.
i need windows.
i am so glad we have that space though!
the kids LOVE it!  they love that is has carpet and it’s so cold and dark.
funny how differently we think.

so…there it is.
not done.
not even CLOSE to done.
but no reason not to share it with you.

actually we are getting to the fun part… the decorating!
we are REALLY loving it here.

———————————————————————————————————

annie is picking a dessert from pinterest to make with me for our dinner guest tonight.
OY!
i am strong.
i can do this.

teagan - Hi there… i am painting my house (like tomorrow -eeek) and I love the shade that’s on your walls…could you email me the color and brand? Thanks so much:)

Janelle - You need to do another Q&A blog post! I’m curious – do you think you’ll ever move back into the craft house? Like if you ever decide to stop craft weekend? Do you miss living in older homes or are you enjoying the newness of a new home? I have to say, I love how when you move into a place, you OWN it and make it YOURS! I love your sense of style.

Lori - I love that your blog is real and that you would share your space with us before it is picture perfect. That large chair in your bedroom – love! Oh and your jewelry makes me happy just looking at it. 🙂 Great space. I’m sure you will do amazing things with it. Btw, great color choice on the stools.

Amber - It’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing! I am loving on your Kitchen island with that space for the micro and useful things that you want to keep close but not out! I think that’s my fav! Looking forward to seeing how it shapes up and changes! Have fun!

tara - i’m so glad i came over to play catch up…
my blogging break during lent turned a little more permanent.
the time and brain space that i got back during the break has been amazing, but i sure do miss all of my favorite blogs!!!

your home looks beautiful..so glad you showed it to us before you’re all finished.
i’m foreseeing lots of amazing color added…that computer space is perfect..can’t wait to see what you do there!

Janna - LOVE your house Meg!!! Lookin so awesome! Love the white/grey and all your bright colored accents. LOVE!! I love that happy girls are the prettiest tote…my 2nd daughter turns 10 on June 12 and she so needs that in her life right now…friend trouble at school and all..how come kids be so mean to each other:( Do you remember where you got it? I’d love to find one for her bday. Thanks:)

Ayca - Meg you’re my idol! Love love the kitchen island and everything you’ve done so far! I really want to paint old furniture but I have no idea how to do it. I would love to see a picture tutorial. Please share with us! Thank you 🙂

Jenny - Love, love, love your house!! Looks so light and bright!

Mindy - You are off to such an amazing start! Thank you for sharing the before photos. Sometimes it feels like people move into ready-made homes and we don’t see all the work that went into them. Can’t wait for more updates : )

Keri - Your jewelry collection is awe-inspiring! So many beautiful, colorful necklaces 🙂

Lisa - PS- your jewelry collection is awesome!

Lora - So happy you showed us the new house! Can’t wait to watch the progress. Some day I’m going to do a milk paint project, so it will be fun to watch yours.

Alice H - I would add a cork board area and maybe chalk board in the designated computer area. Not that you asked my opinion, but that is what I would do. LOL! Love the new place.

Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit - Beautiful home! I feel like a huge island is a MUST for me!

Kerri - Thank you so much for sharing photos of your wonderful home. We live in a church parsonage that is small & dark & depressing and I just love the open floor plan and all the light in your home! The kitchen cabinets and island are awesome – and really like those light fixtures. Please don’t ever paint that bed frame and side tables!!!

Kori - I absolutely adore how open everything feels! All that natural light and white and grey just waiting for bright, inviting colors to be added. Such a great blank canvas to start with! And someday I’m going to steal your island design with the cutout for the appliances – Genius!

Elizabeth - Thank you for sharing! I think you would love a large family calendar next to your computer space next to the kitchen area. It would be open so everyone could write their activities on the wall and you could easily see it. Any hoooo, thanks for sharing. I love how open and honest you are and don’t feel like the house has to be perfect. No one has a perfect home and we ALL HAVE TONS OF PAPERS FROM SCHOOL!! You are not alone! Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Lynette - Love the way its coming together.

Sarah - Great progress and so cute!! How did you go about updating the banister? Straight paint or did you have to use specific products?

Kayla - Thanks for do “during” shots! It makes it all the more enjoyable for us to see the progress and how your family really lives and that, you don’t, in fact, live in a magazine! 😀

Sarah M - We moved into the second floor of an old downtown building in Marion last fall. We are renovating and things just take time. It is an adventure, though. That said, whenever I can I use MMS milk paint to add color and character. I love it. There’s a lady who sells it in Kechi. She has a shop and does workshops occasionally.

Jenny B. - It’s coming along! I’m sure you’ll think of something amazing for your computer station / family command center. 🙂 What color are you thinking for the front door? I want to paint ours turquoise, but I don’t know if I have the guts. Our house is red-orange brick. We’re thinking about buying land and building (so exciting AND scary!), and it is really, really good for me to see your house like it is right now. Reality is that you don’t move into a new home all perfectly decorated and organized. It takes time.

Leah - You should put up a cork-board wall behind the computer. That way all the little reminders can be neatly pinned on the wall.

Holly - So glad u shared! Before and afters are the best!!! Haven’t been to ur blog for a while but follow u on Instagram. Scrolled through a few older posts and now I want to know…y do ur (& my) babies hafta grow up so fast???!!!

Lisa - You’ve helped me step out and use more color in my house. Just finished my living room/eating area and am so happy with it! It’s now so bright and cheerful. Excited to see all the progress you guys make.

Mary Anne - For the computer area, could you do a long desk for room for a few people and hanging cubbies on top for each person or kid for their papers, etc to stay organized? Love your house!!!

Tiffany - Have you ever checked out iheartorganizing? Jen has an amazing blog with organizational ideas. I could see so many amazing things in that computer space to organize all your kids’ work!

Julie - Thanks for sharing pictures of your house, I think it is always nice to see it lived in too, not just posed for photos. Can’t wait to see what else you do to it. Have a fabulous weekend.

Wendy - I have a naked hoosier cabinet that has been waiting for milk paint for 3 years … but I’m too chicken. You go first. Then I’ll follow … maybe.

Lisa - yay!! I’ve been waiting to see more pics! I want to see outside too…and hear more about where and why you picked this house, area, etc. Thanks for sharing! Love all the white too!

Andrea - Loved the tour and the new house. So glad you are getting settled…..I absolutely LOVE the kitchen…… you have great kitchens!

Michelle Deckert Richmond - Thanks Meg….it’s nice to see the blank canvas before you put your special touch to it. Take your time….Half the fun and enjoyment is in the doing. Michelle from Canada.

Denise@victory rd. - Love this.

Love seeing it mostly naked.

We have lived in our house for 2.5 years, and when we moved in blogville was hard for me because I was comparing my undone home with everything I saw online (which I know was stupid). I think a place needs to just be for a while… needs time to evolve into what it’s going to be. Our home looks nothing like I thought it would, but it looks like us, and I love it.

have a fun dinner!

Angela - Oh Megan you made my day! I have been dying to see more of your new house! You have already made a lot of progress and the fact you know some of the things you want to do is a huge step! I’m so glad you all are loving it.

Jenn - Forgot to ask….what is your process for painting cabinets? We need to repaint our already white cabinets white again. They are looking pretty shabby. A step by step would be great or even products you use would be helpful. Yours look so neat and clean!

Jenn - Already loving it! Can’t wait to see the stages.

Melissa - Can’t wait to watch you work your magic and pull this place together. It’s already gorgeous and I love the fun colors on the dinning room table and the kitchen.

jenny - oh meg! it looks amazing – so ” you ” …that kitchen island is FAB!

Brenna - What fun to create a new space – well lots of work, overwhelming at times kind of fun! Now tell me, where did you get that fabulous chair in your bedroom? Loving the material! You are awesome and strong – you got this.

Gina - Oh my gosh, your dogs crack me up photo bombing all your pictures!! I thought Waffle was on the couch in the upper picture. Love your new home and thanks for sharing!! I can’t wait to see the buffet once you paint it and all the decorating!! 😀

Jenni - Love how open your main level is! Thanks for sharing the ‘in process’ version of your home. I’m surprised that you haven’t connect with Abbe Doll in Kechi {http://www.alldolledupwichita.com}. She is a MISS Mustard seed primary educator and has a teaching studio. She is THE BEST and could do a fewer job showing you the in’s and outs of milk paint. It is tricky stuff, but the final product is awesome.

14 reasons i might fail the sugar detox.

this is the second day of the sugar detox i am participating in with Marta.
number TWO.
already my mind is playing tricks on me.
pinterest has become my enemy.
i am jonesing for sugar in a major way… that is not a good sign of what is to come.

i am obviously addicted.
but i knew that.

maybe you aren’t… maybe you are in the baking mood?
make these.
all of these.
and tell me all about it.
but just don’t send them to me or drop them off at my house.
or i might have to punch you.
because the sugar made me do it.

do not bring treats to my house unless you want to get punched.
you have been warned.

the good thing about all of these recipes and my sugar detox?
it’s not going to be THAT hard to not eat these things because i don’t have the time or energy to make them.

now i will go make myself a salad like a big girl.

🙂

tracy fisher - sooo funny. my friends always know when i’m cutting down on sugar because I pin sweets for days…. it’s so much fun!

tara - i did the sugar detox. lasted 20 days…was shooting for 30. oh well.

i have full confidence that you’re stronger than me and will last the entirety of your detox!!!

Se7en's Fabulous Fun Post #223 - se7en | se7en - […] Whatever… one of the cutest blogs in the world… Feast your eyes on 14 brilliant reasons why she might fail her sugar detox. […]

angie webb - I just finished day 10 of the sugar detox yesterday. I have to say the first day was the hardest. All I could think of was sugar!! Day 2 and 3 I was exhausted. I wasnt drinking coffee because I always use flavored creamer. But by day 4 and beyond I felt great. I had energy. No more 2pm slump at work! I even lost 3 pounds. I decided to continue thru til the end of the month. Hoping it helps kick the sugar habit long run.. of course, seeing pictures of all those desserts you posted doesnt help! Haha

Denise@victoryrd - I’m here to help you! Really! Raw food “cheesecake” is so delicious (and cheesecake is my all-time fav), that I get cravings for it. There are a number of recipes on Pinterest.

Going sugar free caused my muffin top to disappear (which is why I should join you, and get back to it 🙂 )

You can do it!

Tanya H - so I added to my “food” board on pinterest. Which is really a ‘treats’ board, but hey, no pinterest police have come yet…!

Liz S. - So…rule number 1 during a sugar detox is…Stay off Pinterest! Lol! Hang in there, it will get easier!

jill - Meg, you are so awesome. I know you can do this! Of course you can do this, because you can do hard things! What a great inspiration you are to all of us readers. We are all fighting our battles and we can gain strength from one another. I can’t wait to hear more of your successes on this journey!

Mallory - Good for you! I’ve done the whole no sugar thing and noticed great results until I got to the point where I’m like eff it…I’m gonna eat what I like and it a lot of it….ending up worse off in the long run…I find if I allow myself some (within reason) sweets, I’m better off than if I go completely without and then binge my way back and then some. Best wishes to you…You look fabulous…and keep up the great work….I just find that eventually you’ll want a bite…and I think that’s okay, too! Good luck!!

Melissa - Sweets are my enemy also!

Hannah - I can totally use the excuse that the baby that I’m growing made me do it and I needed lots of chocolate (and then probably cry my way through the third trimester heartburn that would repeat on me later!). Bring me the salad STAT!

jamie - i am so proud of you! so very proud. i totally need a sugar detox. i’m not addicted. well, i don’t think i am. i couldn’t do what you’re doing. maybe if i was in my house by myself for the duration of the detox. high five to you!

Tonya - Oh my goodness! You are killing me. I am on day 24 of the Whole30 and I am so looking forward to the day I get to make me some kind of treat to eat.

Kathleen Grace - Lord have mercy, this is not the way to give up sugar, lol. You mustn’t look! I can tell you, I’m a sugar addict and going low carb, gluten free, has detoxed those cravings in a BIG way. I would have never thought it possible, but over time, and not being a total Nazi about it, I find I crave it less and less. These kind of things seem way too sweet to me now. Do I still want to make them? Goodness yes! I love to bake! But I am more likely to eat a little and then let it be, or give most of it away to some other poor unsuspecting sugar addict. Yesterday was my birthday and my daughter made my favorite chocolate cake, I had some and then with her permission threw the rest away. I know some would think that was wasteful, but it’s no less wasteful to dump it in our bodies and hate ourselves for it.

Jenn - Thanks a lot! I just printed off two of those recipes ;). Coffee ice cream….yes, please! Now talk about the best of both worlds! I will do my best to make them and send them on their way for someone else to enjoy.

marcie - In case this helps – I made the strawberry crunch bars last Summer and they didn’t turn out well….
You got this!! I did something similar a few years ago and I now rarely eat sweets – your taste buds change and you quit craving – and when you do it doesn’t take much to be on a sugar overload and push it away. True story. I love salad!! ( Repeat after me) 🙂

Laura H - I am going to make you HATE me….I have never, ever, ever, had a SWEET tooth!
The pictures are beautiful, amazzzzinggg…but…they don’t do anything for me as far as cravings. Show me some guacamole and I’m on board, chips and salsa…come to mama…spicy hummus, I’m dancin in the streets!!
Love your blog!

Kristen K. - You had me at “Licking my screen”!!!! Ohmygranola, you are TOOOOO FUNNY! But I want you to succeed, so I will pray for you…and not tell you that I’ll be making those “easy Monster cookie bars” this weekend!!!! M&M’s, get in my mouth!!!! Er, I mean, hummus and carrot sticks…yup. Carrots. YUM!

Amy Mumaw - I am doing the sugar detox with Marta too! I know that I am an addict too! these recipes look even more amazing!! We will do our best!!
Amy

TO - Yum, those all look delicious! Good for you for doing the sugar detox. I am sure I would find it very difficult to do!

The hyperlink for the Chewy Caramel Coconut Brownies is actually the link for the Twix Bars. Not that I was trying to find that recipe or anything! 🙂

Good luck!

Jen - You are braver than me–to do the sugar fast AND to look at Pinterest while attempting a sugar fast! 🙂

I’m thinking Marta should include a mandatory “Pinterfast” when she’s leading a sugar detox group! 🙂 Good luck!

Bethany - You are so brave. I could NOT do it. That espresso ice cream…yum! I haven’t had coffee ice cream in so long.

Christy - I was good until you posted the peanut butter. 🙂 I can leave chocolate alone, but not PB. Good luck!

Diabra - Meg, make this stat. Put an egg in a mug, mix some stevia, a Tablespoon of cocoa, 2 Tablespoons of almond flour, scant tsp of baking powder and 1tsp of coconut oil. Mix well. Cook in microwave for 1 minute. Can top with some extra cream or cooked up berries mixed with chia seeds if you are still eating fruit. Enjoy. You can do this.

Janine - It gets easier after day 3 or 4. I promise. I had to do it while pregnant because I have type II diabetes. Yeah, tell a pregnant woman to quit sugar – hardest thing ever but worth it. After 9 mos of mostly no sugar (I did cheat every now and then and craved it like crazy towards the end) I was okay not eating it and things started to taste “too sweet” Then I started down the slippery slope of sugar and can’t stop now. So unfortunately I am completely off the wagon and should really join Marta’s group.

Kassondra Taylor - MEG! I knew by the title alone I shouldn’t have read this post! I am pregnant and all this chocolate is giving me some serious cravings and no chocolate in this house!! >:/ 😉

Tracey Garcia - Right there with ya! I had to quit looking at Pinterest today because of all the sugary photo temptations. And even though my stomach doesn’t feel hungry my brain is saying I am hungry. And I really want some sweet tea with lemon. I tried making some herbal tea today with coconut sugar and it tasted awful. Maybe I messed it up somehow. Or maybe my tastebuds just are freaking out!

april R - Gee just 14 reasons 😉

(it’ll be worth it – hang in there – mmm crunchy fresh salad!)

Alicia @ La Famille - Duuuuuude. Now this post was just rude. Now I want all of this. ALL of it. I asked Jarrod if he would go get me coffee ice cream at the store. He said no, thank god. I want all this. Did I say that already. Dang youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!

Becki - oh. my. lawd.

Seamingly Sarah - I don’t think I could do a sugar detox. I’m going to lie to myself and just say that I don’t need to.

Katie - I am on day 20 of the Advocare 24 day challenge, I have not had sugar in 20 days. I love sugar in all forms! You got this!

Laura - Good for you. I quit sweets in March. I had such a headache until someone told me to take in extra protein. It is supposed to help with the headache. It worked! After 4 weeks of no sweets, I allow myself one day a week for cake, or pie, or cookies, ice cream, cup cakes, brownies, blondie brownies, whatever I want. My thoughts linger over each option, sort of like lust, and then I try to find someone to go out with me to find it! Good luck, and remember….this is your journey, if you fall off the wagon and land in sugar, get back up and start again. Sugar is NOT like quicksand, but if it was, it would be the sweetest death.

danielle - Here I am making a nice salad for dinner and I see this! I might have to take you off my feed 🙂 Those all look so good! Cheesecake! I need cheesecake!

Necole@seriouslysassymama - And that is why I did not participate. The disappointment I would have felt after eating two mini cupcakes at my daughters classroom party would have been my undoing. I am like that smoker who cannot go cold turkey. I eat sugar and bake in moderation. My problem lies more with carbs and breads. Good luck.

margaret - My sister and I have a major sugar issue as well.. Her OB told her that sugar is not a food group. Whatever, dude. Kudos to you for trying the detox! I have heard that if you give up sugar for awhile, you lose the taste for it.. yeeeaah.. not sure if that would apply to me. Good luck!

tracy fisher - i’m soooo excited to hear. i’m trying to refocus. I pray about it a lot. I wish the best for you. you deserve it girl!

Amber - I joined the Sugar Detox starting on June 1st. I too am freaking out. I don’t feel as though I consume too much sugar on a daily basis because it makes me feel bad, however I am afraid of how much hidden stuff I will be made aware of. Whatever though, we are going to kick sugar’s butt all over town!!!

tara - God has been working a big dream in my heart, too.
can’t wait to hear all about it when you’re ready to share.

ps. i feel sure if my parents bought me anything, it might be something like a family of mauve and country blue geese. your parents did GOOD.

Kristin S - Last comment, hilarious. Always love your genuineness, Meg.

CathyC - Can’t wait for you to share what your new dream is!

Gina - You make me laugh.

Melanie Griesedieck - Hi Meg,thanks to your shout out to Marta last week with her links because I also started the Sugar Detox yesterday. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for the last few months but didn’t know how to go about it alone. Love your blog!

Mollie @Sprinkles of Life - I need to hit up Lowe’s to find that mint green. Love it!

I’m doing sugar-free too! Have been since last Monday! We’re not eating sugar of any kind. Even honey. Even all the hidden forms of sugar on ingredient lists. I’ve found bread to be the hardest thing to find. And English muffins. I realllly want a dessert but I’m holding out. 2 1/2 more weeks! 🙂

Jill @ Cora Anne Designs - Can’t wait to find out what you’re up to, I bet it’s awesome!!

Paula - I love green too. Check out Mary Carol’s blog this week at http://www.nellhillsblog.com
It’s all about using green. Saw it and thought of you.

jenn - so…. I know you are kinda busy…. momming, moving, etc. but I have a question – that is asked wrapped in love and patience, and wonder and hope…

Are you going to post pictures of your new house? Lots of them? I LOVE and am inspired by your color, your extraordinary of the ordinary, and would really REALLY love to see the new house.

Now, I also realize you may have decided to keep it private, and I can respect that too. Family. I get it. but, on the chance that you are willing to share….. well?

If you need a reason – it is my birthday on Friday?! 🙂 Just curious. Thanks! Hope you get to visit your friends in Michigan! 🙂

jennie - can’t wait to see what’s in store!

Gevay - Can’t wait to hear the big news!

jamie - i need a spray paint tutorial. do you have one of those? i tried it once and wasn’t very good at it. i know. how can spray painting be hard? that’s what everyone is thinking. i’m always so excited when you show spray paint cams.

Becky - SUPER excited to hear about your new God-sized dream!! I’m working on one myself, partly through your inspiration. Best wishes from Concordia! 🙂

chrissi - i went sugar free 4 weeks ago. i am really surprised how easy it has been you will do great! little things like dashes of cinnamon make my day. i still bake for my family (like i am sure you will too) and it is okay. you can so do this.
….on a side note…julie’s instagrams from africa. melt my heart. pure joy♥

Alicia @ La Famille - You are so fun. We need to hang out and spray paint things.

Tiffany Gardner - Still… after all this time of reading your blog.. your still my favorite. You inspire me through your love of color and Jesus. Thanks for sharing your life with us and encouraging me to live a better one.

Gemma - Please share your summer list! I know as soon as you share it summer is on it’s way : D

Looking forward to hearing your big news!

Gemma x

Necole@seriouslysassymama - I thought about the sugar detox thing. The thing is,I enjoy having sugar every now and again, and i really do not do it in excess. i figured this out when I went on my little food journey last year. Good luck, I am going to eat a doughnut. Just kidding.

Kari - Oooooooohhhh!!! I can’t wait to hear what your big news is!!!

Tiffany - Your parents shopping for you is cute! I’m so curious about these big God plans! So many big adventures have already taken place in your life over the last few years…. I can’t wait to hear what else God has in store for you!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Your last line CaRacked me up.
You’re so funny.
I miss ye.

Also, thank you.
I mean.
You’re so good to me and all your people.
I was especially surprised to see my giant mug. Ha.

Last thing: Your parents are GOOD!
I am laughing so hard at what my parents would find for me…

Lori H - Meg, when you said that you are working on a God Sized Dream, I wondered if you have read The Circle Maker (by Mark Batterson)? If not, you would love it!!
Good luck with the Sugar Detox! 🙂
