happy anniversary

Sc0057c857_2

13 years…
“we’ve still got the heat…wooo!” (cheaper by the dozen)
can my husband pick an anniversary gift or what?
taking me to an antique store to buy a chandelier i’d been admiring for months…
be still my heart.
he knows me so well.

Img_4804_2

he wasn’t thrilled for me to take a picture IN the store..but i had to.
i love it.
soon to be hung in my foyer…painted white first….i think.

Img_4815_2

look at all that sparkle.
so pretty.

we had so much fun this weekend.
did a whole lot of nothing.
no date is complete without home depot for us.
we went there…went to the mall…pier one..kohl’s…linens & things…world market…the shoe store…Chipotle…the movie theater (but Bourne was sold out! a month old movie and it was sold out 15 minutes before it even started!) and then rented a movie a dillon’s (“stranger than fiction”..will ferrell…good movie).
aren’t we wild?
but you know…just having time together..no rushing back for a sitter…no schedule…no clock…
was awesome.
we got to relax together.
sleep in.
listen to loud music IN THE DAY!

happy anniversary craig.
i love you.
your my BFF…for reals.

amy - you two are really way too cute. happy to know you both.

kristin - you
inspire
me

kelly - hi Meg,
Thanks for e-mailing me back. We are from Rockford, Il and we lived in St. Charles, Il. Happy Anniversary! The chandelier is Beautiful, good find! I also loved the pictures of Burns. I am a small town girl at heart and I loved it.
take care and I’ll check in with you again.
Kelly g

traci - I laughed out loud at that picture!! SOOOOO SWEEEEET!!! I remember so clearly for our 5th anniversary I found a stunning chandelier that my shweetie bought for me….it was at an estate sale and it was LOVE AT FIRST SITE!! I was giddy like a little girl. I would have a chandelier in every single room! LOVE THEM. You should post where you met your husband…would love to know that story. You two seem to really “have it”. Thanks for sharing 🙂

scrappin’

Img_4821_2

i have had some time in my craft room with the kids’ gone.
there was lots of sports on this weekend…thank goodness…
no guilt for wanting to be scrapping.
craig is more than happy to watch sports.

i made a star wars page that i will share soon…it’s still drying.

i was looking through my albums and thought i’d share some of my favorite ones i’ve done this year.
(sorry for the page protector glare)

Img_4824_3

Img_4825_2

Img_4829_2

we obviously love U2.
we have been to 3 concerts.
this was in 2005…
my dad got the tickets at his ticket master then mailed them to us…he put “Bono” on the return address…it was worth saving…my funny dad.
i included the booklet that comes with the CD from the tour (atomic bomb)
on the black star paper i wrote in black pen titles of songs we like.
the journaling is on a tag behind our photo.
i love this page…so many good memories.
and that’s what it’s all about right?

Img_4853
Img_4854

i made this with the scraps from annie’s baby blanket her nana made.
the journaling is on the tag.
i love on annie’s little onsie in the picture it says peek-a-boo.
look at the sweet fat baby….ahhhh.

Img_4848_2

this picture of talby laying on my gigantic pregnant belly is precious.
she always wanted to cuddle after her nap for a long time…everyday.
we would sit out on the porch swing till daddy would come home from work.
i knew it would change after the baby…

Img_4846
Img_4860_2

i made the same page for the oldest 4 with all different combos.
talby and scott’s still don’t have the big picture done though.
(because now that i am digital i loathe the thought of going to that walmart photo counter ever again)

Img_4840
Img_4841

this page was lots of work but that’s why i like it.
i picked all the ribbon…lightly glued it down and then sewed it to the page.
sometimes it’s fun to just MAKE something!

like i’ve said before…many of these are “scrap-lifted”
but i use my choices of colors and papers…they aren’t exact copies
some are my own design…some are inspired by others.

click on the scrapbook layouts photo album for a few more too.

happy labor day!
my kids come home in 2 hours…it was too short.

traci - I seriously have no idea how you find time to scrapbook with 5 kids!!! I adore the picture of you and your hubby at the u2 concert…how sweet! Love the baby blanket pg and I also love the ribbon pg!!!! Where do you come up with your ideas or are they just from your creative brain?
Thanks for sharing….I so love your blog 🙂

burns

Img_4737_2

last night we met craig’s mom at burns cafe for dinner.
this is burns, kansas.

Img_4784

did you miss it?
here is a picture facing the other way.

Img_4783

burns, kansas
population: 268
this cafe is only open friday and saturday nights? i think maybe sunday noon too.
whatever it is…it’s very little.
they make a certain amount of food and when it’s gone it’s gone.
it’s just like the sign says “good country cookin'”
there is “country ambiance” too.

Img_4760_2

Img_4762_2

usually we are the youngest people there.
last night there were some college students with their parents.
it’s packed everytime.
it’s 25 minutes from our house…in the middle of nowhere.
the prettiest country drive to get there.

Img_4741

Img_4740_2

(the kids took all the inside pictures…it kept them entertained)
annie was like a monkey during this meal…climbing all over me.
our food was delicious…as always.
all the stuff that takes alot of work to make…done for you.
for $6.25.

Img_4750_2

i think this is my most favorite meal…not just at burns.
and then the pie….oh my.
if you get there early you get a choice of many many kinds.
again we are the youngest people there and we get there at normal dinner hours…the old folks are eating at 5:00…and they take whole pies home with them too…so our choices are always limited at 6:30.
but my butterscotch meringue was perfect.
annie’s chocolate pie….also perfect.
when it came she said loudly “OHHHHHH PIIIIIIIE!”

Img_4773_2

the 2 big kids were rebels and ordered floats instead of pie.
how dare they?

Img_4780

there is nothing fancy about burns (obviously)
but when we first moved back to kansas…
it was just everything that we’d missed.
small town (very) with big old homes…
community feel…
friendly…
the countryside…
and very good food…

Img_4786_2

the locals…we bought cinnamon rolls from their bake sale.

Img_4793_3

Img_4781

there is a tiny little hair salon next door and once after dinner craig got a haircut while we let the kids play on a dirt pile outside..that doesn’t sound hick does it?
ha ha ha
if you are local…you must go.
and call us to meet you there.

kristin - okay, i’ve never been either…i think it’s road trip time!

melissa @ the inspired room - That sure looks like a fun, small town place to go. And the food looks homestyle-good! Thanks for sharing the photos!

amy - craig looks exactly like scott in that picture!

Karin - I’ve heard of this place, but now it’s just moved up my list of “places to go” for a quick outing. We loves these places!

danelle - I grew up in a small like about this size. There is nothing like it. On the flip side though…VERY BORING!!! With that aside..it’s an awesome place to visit now because it’s so slower and so much easier.

traci - HOW NEAT! When I was a young girl (im 38 now) we went to Butler, Missouri which looks alot like the little town you just showed us. VERY fond memories!!! There is NOTHING in the world like small town life, nothing! I “think” I live in small suburb and love it but then I read your blog and realize I still miss the really small town life. Life is just easier, slower, calmer and everyone is there for everyone. Your giving your kids a great gift!!

i don’t want the warm weather to end.
annie was completely entertaining herself…
soaking in the sun…
laughing like crazy.
i think she may like this quiet house more than i thought.

traci - I have four kids and I think sometimes we underestimate the power of “one on one” time with our kids (I know I do)…She is a COMPLETE doll!!!

wednesday

so far….
these girls are enjoying their time with mommy.
and i am too.
the house is pretty quiet in the mornings now.
i spend time on the computer…
do some laundry…
clean up a little (very little).
they watch the shows they want without being bugged by the boys.
play dress up…and babies
and right now talby is drawing on the bathroom wall.

Img_4727

this project is about half done.
i am still filling in their drawings…a few a day.
i will have to paint a few in to cover annie’s “contributions”.
talby wrote the abc’s today.
a few letters are backwards and i am going to leave it that way.
i made a mosaic mirror that is not grouted yet to hang in here.
i need a fun rug…towel hooks that are low enough for the kids…
and i want to paint the cabinet that is in there.
not too much right?
i’ll show pictures when i am finished (of course).

Img_4691_2

a self portrait at our park picnic outing yesterday.
so sunny and warm.
annie only ate the marshmallow pie and not any of the healthy things i packed.

i am frustrated.
yesterday sean’s new bike was stolen from the school bike rack.
last week…scott’s bike was stolen from our house.
this past christmas…my bike was stolen from our house.
this “small town” is very quickly losing its charm.
we did not have any of them locked up at the time.
that is stupidity on our part.
i take responsiblity for not forcing the lock thing.
i just never think it’s going to happen…
who does that?
yesterday when sean was just standing there where his bike was
i thought “am i on candid camera? am i being punked?”
how could this be happening again!
so frustrating.
the police officer said “there’s just always going to be people who take.”
so true…
our bikes will now be in maximum security lock down at all times.
(and watch one more get stolen before we make it to the store to buy locks)

so a few happy things after that yucky stuff.

Img_4606_2
2 butterflies in the jar that talby caught and observed.
Img_4565
morning glories…all a mess.
Img_4573_2
my little white rabbit in the garden guarding this bike from being stolen.
Img_4699
my favorite window in the house as i peek through the zinnias

now…go lock up all your bikes!

amy - sophie’s anxious for the day when we have white bathroom walls… because then you can draw on them! i think they’ll stay red for awhile!

meg duerksen - Linda…now I AM blushing!
thank you so much for all those sweet things. if only you could this house on a normal day…oh the mess!
don’t compare spaces…just make yours special the way YOU like it.
and i love your blog…you find the most beautiful things to inspire me.

kristin - the butterfly jar is stunning…i would gaze at it too.

Linda - Thanks for visiting my blog! I, do, however, have to get this off my chest: I am properly jealous of the incredible home you live in. It looks like something out of a magazine and yet it feels like it belongs to a real family. You often see one or the other, but to get the best of both in one house…that’s rare. I am sooo envious of your craft room. It is fit for an artist and I feel like blushing at the pathetic little space I set up this week to carry out my own artistic endeavours…
I’m not normally this whiny, but I really do have a case of the green-eyed monster!!
Hands down, I think your home is the most creative in blogland!! I’ll just have to get over it!! LOL
Linda

danelle - Too bad about the bikes. we bought locks last year and now I can’t remember the combinations. So, be sure and write them down somewhere!

i {heart} preschool

Img_4685

preschool open house was last night.
the whole family went to make it special for annie.
she was so happy and ready to be there.
she didn’t want to go when it was over.
we stayed outside at the park an extra half hour.

Img_4678_2

Img_4689_2

*talby drew the design that is now the logo for new creation preschool!*
(more to come on another post)

Img_4688

their room is so colorful.
this preschool is such a loving environment.
it’s fun, energetic, creative, kind, safe, happy, full of life…
i love this place.

Img_4683

Img_4687

Img_4679

she is going to have a great year!
no doubt about it.

traci - I was a preschool teacher for years and literally loved every single day of it!! The kids are at a fun, sweet, loving, cute, age where you never know what is going to come out of their mouths..lol
I work at my church’s MDO right now for some fun money….its not preschool but I make it as close to preschool as possible because that is where my heart is. She will love everyday of it :)….I love the Hideout sign

Karin - What a fabulous place! Everywhere you look you can find the “fingerprints” of our friend, Kristin. Amazing. Also, I LOVE Talby’s picture. I was admiring it in our church bulletin. Yeah, Talby!!

kristin - i think it is funny that we took the exact same picture…oh, it is families like you that make this place work…your love and support are treasured!
