good stuff

**thank you for all the love you gave me over my dirty house.
you understand me…and some of you you are messy too!
i was right…craig was totally embarrased.
he is neat and tidy…unlike his creative, messy, sanguine wife.
and that ‘s why we are great together? maybe.
and now i am moving on…

****************************************************
my mom and i did some antique shopping.
it’s our favorite.

Img_0316

i loved this display of old cameras!

Img_0418_2

i came home with this scale.
the little graphics are so vintagey and way-rite!

Img_0416_2

Img_0428

this fan is now mine.
it has no insides anymore…it’s just for looks.

Img_0430_2

hi.

Img_0412_2

and i got this too.
it will have a new life as my bathroom vanity…
whenever we make a new bathroom.
i can’t decide if i am going to paint it…leave it or what.
i will keep you posted.
thank you mom for finding it…and for such a steal!

Img_0317_2

i thought of ms. kristin when i saw this orange desk.
i left it there for you.

Img_0329_2

this was a wall at starbucks.
people have scratched so many words in the wall paper
that now it looks like a real piece of art.
it gave starbucks kind of an artsy feel…instead of a mass-market-feel.
(starbucks i still love you even though you only love me for my money)

after the antiques we tortured ourselves
by taking my 13 yr. old clothes shopping….UGH.
annie got the best end of the deal.

Img_0331_2

she’s watching backyardigans at american eagle.
lucky.

melissa @ the inspired room - Oh, yay, I love the new bathroom vanity! I’ll have to send you a pic (when I get one) of the vanity we did for the beach house. It was a buffet (not an antique though) before it was a vanity!
Can’t wait to see the progress!
Melissa

traci - wow, you got some great things. looks like some great shops. i am in need of some new antique shops to frequent. can’t wait to see where you put everything.

Dana D - OH WOW! I think my grandmother has the exact same piece of furniture as your future bathroom vanity. It’s part of her dining room set! She stores her table linens in the drawers. I’m making a mental note to take a good look at hers next time I go visit! (And if I can remember, I might even send you a picture or two!)

traci - Ok, Im so not a jelous person but I am JELOUS you have a gorgeous vanity for your bathroom that isnt really a bathroom vanity but WORKS!!! I have wanted to do that forever but my bathroom isnt big enough….anyhow, I love it!! Like I said before, your house might get messy but its so stinking gorgeous WHO CARES!!!

Melanie - Meg,
I just love your blog. It makes me happy to read it. You also take great pictures. I am very organized (a little anal) and love to decorate my house and cook but I am not creative like you. I love that you are a free spirit and don’t let things like the house (and laundry) get to you. That, I can’t do. I guess you could say I am more like your husband. I have only one child, a boy, (13) so I can’t say we have a ton in common but I could so see being your friend if we lived closer. I am in sunny Fl. (in the 80 degree weather) but if I were closer, I would love to go to Barnes & Noble together. (that, we do have in common) Anyway, thanks for the smile I get everyday from reading your blog. Keep it up!

Crystal - Love the cameras…I have a nice little collection myself…totally jealous of the scales AND the fan! I am dying for yardsales here!!!
9 1/2, anything Jane Austin (does that make me sound old….), anything starbucks and dunkin donuts…..and I live for polka dots…not that you asked the last one. 🙂
beautiful post. as always!

Lanny Stanard - Megan, love the vintage stuff. I also have a scale, I mainly use it at christmas time I put a wrapped gift on it. Hope you are having a great week-end.
Hugs! Lanny

keepin’ it real

my husband is going to die when he sees this.
and probably my grandma and my mother.
but i really do want to keep it real.
i show pictures of my house looking pretty and clean
but in REALaity…i am surrounded by mess…
most of the time.

Img_0395_2

my constant never-ending laundry pile…

Img_0396_2

not my mess but i still see it.

Img_0401_2

this is my mess.
this is my laundry to put away.
that is my suitcase with my scrapbook supplies from my trip 2 weeks ago.
my bed un-made.

Img_0404_2

my craft room…ridiculous.

Img_0421_2

and my sink.
it always looks like this.
even if we get the dishes done…
5 minutes later there is another dish!

i am a mess.
just thought i should let you know.

Chrissie - I just wanted to say that I stumbled across your blog this morning and I have been reading every entry since you began. At first I was drawn to your journal because I love old homes, but then I met your children and love how you share them.
As far as the messy home goes, you live there. God has been good to you in that you are blessed to have all those children you give that lived in look to your home and dirty dishes just mean that you have plenty to eat.
BTW, if blogs had been around 24yrs ago I could have given you a run on the Naughty Baby. My own naughty baby is now in college, but she put me through many challenges as a young mom. She was the last child I could have and I treasure her for that without her my life would have been boring. So enjoy your baby.
Take care, Chrissie

Aimee - I want to know how you get thirty some stinkin’ comments on a messy house! Like this is something new. Please. Love ya.

melissa @ the inspired room - Yeah, my most popular post probably ever was of the ugliest hallway in my house when it was littered with a dead giraffe, a bunch of blankets, toys, and the vacuum cleaner we were using to suck up the dead mouse. 🙂 I guess we can all relate to real life, eh? 🙂

Linda - Oh…thank goodness!! Honestly, your home is my dream home and ALWAYS looks like it is perfect and magazine ready. I always felt that the fun you all have still seemed to lend itself to incidental, photographable… stylish mess, if you will! I feel soooo much better now..is that pathetic or what??!!
Love, love, love your blog!! Even more, now…
Linda

Chaos-Jamie - This post absolutely MAKES MY DAY!
Tonight Brent suggested I clean the bathroom. And then suggested it again. I wanted to pelt him.
Off subject: My kids adamantly deny running into the road. I told them it would be hard to mistake them in Hillsboro, but they deny it anyway. I’m calling Darrell to get the scoop. HA! Glad you didn’t smush my darlin’s.

Gabrielle - but I bet you have happy kids…and they are colorful and creative..I wish I could be more like that…I really do…to the left of me as I type this…is the dining room table with ketchup stains from last nights dinner and and syrup from the pancakes this morning…it is knawing on me to clean it up….but I’m so tired from menapausal lack of sleep…and I have had 3 cups of and still I need something stronger…latte anyone?

Tiffany - Thank you soooo much for posting this, my house pretty much looks the same, I thought I was the only one… lol

Queenie Bee - Thank you, thank you, thank you! And I thought it was just me with these issues! I’m ready to send my kiddos back to public school next year…and homeschooling is NOT the problem…it’s my cluttered HOUSE that’s the problem! LOL! It just seems never ending. Hey, but it does remind me of a wonderful quote that I once read: “ONE CANNOT BE CREATIVE AND TIDY AT THE SAME TIME!” Isn’t that sooooo true?! Thanks for posting!

Melanie - We all feel your pain!

Jennie W. - Meg–I can’t thank you enough for this post. So, I’m not the only one whose house looks like this 99.9% of the time? PHEW!

Andrea - Oh I love you for this post. It takes the shame out of my secret life!

traci - oh meg – i love how you show your real life. thanks. it makes me feel good. i should follow your lead and take a few “real” photos around here tomorrow. my laundry is caught up, but the kids’ room are awful and i thing we have a “famous footwear” store on our front porch. life is crazy and cleaning is the least fun part of it – so, don’t do it. there are more important things.

jeanetta - do you know the expelling sigh of relief that just left me? i’m always a mess and its always refreshing to be reminded there are others out there too.

Sara - Oh Meg, I feel your pain. I have a similar but smaller scale mess AND a dirt front yard. Usually the house is “presentable” for birthdays and planned gatherings only. Much to my dismay. Instead of cleaning, I usually head down to the studio at night and paint. Ya Gotta Have Priorities!!!!!!!!

Dana D - Your house does normally look beautiful on your blog, but I love these photos, too! It shows us that you’re human! I think we all have days when our homes are out of control. I’m currently experiencing about my 12th day straight of chaos in my house! Hee! Hee!
Love that you keep it real!

Holly - Oh, thank you!
Love this post and your blog in general. I have the fun piles here at home with my husband & 3 kids too. That’s just life at this point in our lives.
Have to say that even your piles are pretty…and colorful. =-)
Your photos are always so lovely too. Great eye for beauty, you have. =-)

kristin - hee hee hee.
now that is real.
and familiar.
i should do that.

Gini - come on over to my house, girl…..I, unlike you, have only shot pictures of my “heaping piles of laundry” – not the rest of my house. I am not ready to put it out there to all my friends that I am really not what they think I am!! right on, for keeping it real!

traci - this is exactly why everyone just loves your blog!!! When you have five kids a house just wont be clean all the time if every..lol
Regardless of a little bit of a mess your house is just GORGEOUS!!!

holly - I have 5 kids too and I can tell you I KNOW!!!! You missed all the shoes that they take off and don’t put in the shoe rack by the door! Thank you for being real- I start feeling like I am a slob- but you are too (Insert sweet sisterly laughing)

Sarah Keith - Oh Isn’t that the truth! One day when I was taking “pretty pics” for my post my husband said, “Why don’t you take a pic of the golden retriever hair rolling down the hallway, or the spill on the sofa, or all the laundry waiting to be folded! That’s why blog land is so fun I told him! It’s to ESCAPE for a bit!

Lanny Stanard - Hey megan, to bad I don’t live closer I clean house for a living and would love to help! have fun I’ll be thinking of you!
Lanny.
http://www.simplylanny.blogspot.com

cynthia - i wouldn’t feel the slightest bit bad…everyone’s house looks like at one time or another, if not…they’re lying!
i can’t imagine how much laundry you have…there are only 3 of us and i do it almost every day!
which means…that there is a pile of laundry to fold and put away in our living room all the time!

chris - Ah ha! you’re one of us, well the outward rooms look fine here , but beware of closets cupboards and my laundry craft storage area, its the lack of free time to organize as you go , sometimes , ok a lot of times you just have to toss and get onto something else more pressing , oh plus I hate laundry especially putting it away , I need more closet organizers .
Now you are making me want to cleam more, I am recalling all my bad closets:(

Kim - Thanks for keeping it real!

jerusalem - oh honey I am so glad to see someone else leaving their suitcase a mess for more than a day! Their are always “decorative” laundry and dish piles around here! And I only have half the kids you do!! There is beauty in the mess – it’s called life! Happy Weekend!

lulu sparkles - tee hee! totally love this,I am so tired of seeing perfectness in blogs. “get real” photos make us all feel so much better about our messy little lives~THANK YOU! happy weekend 🙂

Brenis - Oh Meg! I feel your pain! Laundry is my arch nemisis! LOL! It’s never ending, and even when you are washing, drying and folding all day, all week, there is always MORE! You have one more kid than we do, thus what… another closet full of laundry?
If you ever figure out something that WORKS to keep up, please shout it from the rooftops so the rest of us can benefit too! LOL

Shelly - Don’t feel bad…
That’s how my house is right now too. And if we were to get a phone call that someone will be coming over for a surprise visit, then my room is the catch-all for everything… to add to the clutter in there =)

Lee Ann - Oh Thank you! I always tell my husband, “I think the laundry ferry will come today.” Somehow she skips over my house a lot though. And the dishes…who can keep up? Sometimes I do good until the dishwasher is full. Then they pile up. Then it becomes such a big job to actually unload AND reload and by that time there’s so many dishes that the dishwasher is full again and the cycle continues. You’re not alone and see how many “thank you’s” you received for showing us that?

Blanca - Believe me you are not alone that is exactly how my house looks right now. I’ll get to it this weekend at least I hope I do.
Blanca

Andrea - Whew! I am not the only one. I don’t mind, well ok i do, but the part that bothers me the most is the constant dishes in the sink…….always……..I wish, sometimes that I was Jane Jetson….that robot housekeeper of hers kept things ship shape always……LOL

Pattie - I used to occasionally hit the laundry mat just so I could have all the clothes done at once. I would take my book and Sonic Dr Pepper, tons of quarters and just stay for the afternoon. Those who know me laughed because I have an absolute phobia of germs in public places but, hey sometimes you just have to deal!!

Tonya - yup…that looks about right…
(love this post!)
Tonya

mom - No I am not going to die – I’ve seen it and helped clean it. Good luck

April - OH my gosh…I feel so much better…now. -thanks

amanda az - and we love you for it. looks like my house as i type this. oh well!

IHOP

Img_0301_2

Img_0303_2

my mom and i treated the kids to IHOP.
i really love to go out for breakfast and we never do it.
i used to go with my girlfriends in chicago all the time.
oh how i miss those breakfasts!
but this post is not about that.
it IS about funny face pancakes…with yogurt hair.
and hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Img_0300_2

talby pulled on my arm and whispered in my ear
“thank you for taking me here. this is my favorite breakfast ever”
she absolutely loved getting to play with her food.

Img_0305_2

scott was happy too.
he got to order off the grown up menu.

Img_0306_2

lauren had just said something snotty…
imagine that.

Img_0307_2

sean ordered a cheeseburger and fries.
when i told craig that he said “of course he did!”
sean is always proud to be himself.

and i ordered the plain old boring regular french toast.
and i ate every bite.

Lauren - Wonderful! Adorable!
I was JUST THERE last Sunday with all MY kids and we were doing almost the SAME THINGS you’re kids are doing here! How funny is that?!
I posted three photos of my kids eating at IHOP on MY blog – is there something in the water Meg? Or can we just chalk it up to “great minds think alike”?
Take care!

meg duerksen - kristin…i don’t want to oversell IHOP. i just like breakfast out not necessarily there. but it is very kid friendly.
eryn – thank you for your new blog addy…and loving on talby.
crsytal…i started on yours too. i am so excited for our swap. i will finally be part of a blog swap thing…it’s a first. 🙂
jen- how funny would it be if you actually went into IHOP wearing helmets!! and then explained to the manager why. maybe then you would get a free meal. that would be hilarious. be sure to take pictures if you do.

Jennifer P. - You always manage to catch your kids in perfect kid poses. Love that one of Lauren and the sideways glance!
we went to IHOP not too long ago and the waiter dropped a whole plate of pancakes on my 3 year old’s head. Not only was there very little apology, there was no complimentary ANYTHING. We haven’t been back since. but you’ve made it all look so tasty, we might strap on our helmets and try it again ;)!

Crystal - meg….I have not forgotten you! I have already started your swap goodies based on what I “know” about you through your blog…maybe if I tell you I will answer those questions tomorrow then I will actually do it… 🙂 We will see not won’t we?
Have a great night!!
Crystal

eryn - I love the pic of talby…she’s so darn beautiful! I LOVE french toast…there’s no shame in that! I order it almost every time I go out for breakfast (the like twice a year it happens).
ps, changed my blog url to snapshotsofmymommymoments.blogspot.com

Blanca - I love me some IHOP too. I always order French toast with a side of hash browns and bacon. Yummy.
Blanca

Laura T. - Great pictures —
My son LOVES IHOP; however, we don’t have one near us in NJ. Whenever we travel to Ohio, we make sure we stop so he can have his IHOP fix.

chris - I too love a nice breakfast out, but can you believe we are so deprived and don’t have IHOP, but Denny’s is good too, my oldest child always orders chicken and fries for breakfast when we go , without fail.
we haven’t been in a while, we must go this weekend, thanks for the reminder.

traci - i haven’t been to an ihop since i was very young. i loved them. i might have to find one – your post made me hungry. i would have been like sean – i would order lunch food for breakfast. thanks for the memories.

kristin - will you believe that i have never been to ihop?
and it always sounds so cozy and nice…i will have to go.

amy - I love Scott’s face in the one with he and Lauren!

spring break part 2

Img_0259_6

my niece playing in grandma’s yard.
grandma supplied the kids with bubbles and chalk…and the neighbor’s b-ball goal.
during our visit we kept very busy.

Img_0288_2

they all like the natural history museum on the KU campus.
it’s small enough they can run around freely without me worrying.
it’s full of stuffed animals, skeletons and kansas history.
and a special sound exhibit…

Img_0276_4

scott could hear as well as a bat.

Img_0293_2

our second annual picture on the jayhawk.
they like the museum but
i think the real thrill is getting to eat at the cafeteria afterwards!
carrying a tray…picking the meal you want…and carrying it to a table.
easy to please i guess.

Img_0265_2

annie took this picture of maya’s feet.
and my dad caught her trying to take one of the dog.
she looks like a natural to me.

Of505903933_5

emily loria - That picture of the dog is hilarious!

traci - yes, i think annie is taking after mama. you can tell she is with you while you are taking your beautiful pictures. she is a natural. i love all the t-shirts in your pictures – we aren’t there yet but it gives me hope that warmer weather is on its way.

Crystal - Love the Annie pics….I am counting the days until I can give Moses a camera…I feel like that will be the closest I will ever get to knowing what is going on in that mind of his!

spring break

while at my parents’ we went to the nature center.
it is such a nice little place with turtles, fish and rescued birds.
they have a big macaw parrot…
i was standing by it just looking at him.
he looked me in the eye and said “hello” in a quiet voice.
it totally freaked me out.
i am so dorky.
we took a walk around the pond enjoying the sun.

Img_0196_3

Img_0203_2

i dont’ know how smart this was…
but they somehow stayed dry and clean.

Img_0222_2

Img_0217_2

lauren caught a teenie little frog.
but the big excitement was when she caught the snake.

Img_0243_4

Img_0232_2

she’s has always been awesome at catching slimy things.
snakes, lizards, frogs – anything.
i don’t know how she does it.
she has a gift.

Img_0224_4

oh that’s nice.

melissa @ the inspired room - Holy cow, that was creepy. And that frog, what an amazing closeup of his MOUTH!
m

Jenn Thomas - Seeing the kids enjoying the outdoors again is so wonderful. It reminds me that we will need to reserve the Hesston College cabin again this summer and have a campout together – how many snakes do you think they will find this year? and hopefully the pond will have a little more water in it.

Jennifer P. - Snakes and frogs and freaky birds—eeeew :)! I’m a little squeamish–but glad you’re a cool mom with brave kiddos!

traci - once again, beautiful pictures. and the snake pix – awesome. i love kids and nature such a wonderful mix.

mom - These women who have commented about yucky snakes never went on Audobon Campouts, did they? I will send the picture of you holding the snake and see if they really freak out!!

Julie K - I’m so jealous of your beautiful weather! I can’t imagine you miss Chicago too much with the milder temps earlier in the season way over in Kansas! :o) Great pics – looks like a fabulous day! We tried going for a bike ride today and turned around four houses down … windy and cold cold cold. Ugh. Why do we live here again???

seve - Your picture of the close-up on the snake’s head with the out-of-focus face in the background is great. I really love it.

Liz - HEEEBY JEEBIES! Wow. What a brave chic.

traci - Everytime I read or look at your blog it reminds me I need to LOOSEN up!!! I probably would never have allowed them to be over by the water doing that but WHY NOT? Who cares if they get a bit wet or dirty? Its spring break…not heading to church.
The one area I couldnt do…is letting my gorgeous daughter kiss the snake…YIKES!!!! I DO NOT DO SNAKES!!! Bless her heart for loving slimmy things.ewwwwwwwwww…..No way could I have even taken the picture..lol
JUST LUUUUUUUV your blog!!!!

chris - Wow you are a great Mom I could never deal with the snake, frog maybe but they kinda give me the creeps as well, even though we have an african frog(which is really a fish as it is always under water), that is really mine because I feed and clean his stuff, of course , how did I get stuck with a frog??

Lindy - LOVE your blog – your photo stories are so wonderful. I look forward to all of the color in them. Nice to see that smile on Lauren – I too am a critter lover. slimy or not. After all they are all God’s Creatures.

Brenis - eeewwwww! Now i totally have the heebie jeebies! Definitely what nightmares are made of for some of us! LOL! Sooo happy for Lauren though! haha!

amy - okay, that’s just creepy. and to think… you kiss those same lips good night. gross.

easter

Img_0338_2

here is what i came up with…
everyone got a special bath towel of their own.
(in theory this will lessen the laundry & they will stop wasting towels?)
they also each got a monkey plate, a gift of their own
and a chocolate bunny.
thanks mom for helping me.

Img_0345_2

the crew after church this morning.
annie is always the goofball.
but this picture looks more real to me…

Img_0350_2

we had a yummy dinner at craig’s moms today.
thank you deanne.
it was delicious.
lauren and scott hid the candy eggs for the 3 younger ones.
don’t you love to watch an egg hunt?
the panic run from one side of the yard to the next…so funny.

Img_0356_2

Img_0358_2

this morning i realized i hadn’t thought through the easter outifts.
no tights or shoes to “match”.
i’m not matchy-matchy but this was not what i was planning.
annie seems to pull it off though.

Img_0366_4

happy easter.

*****************************************
i started “answering” your comments…
in the comments.
so if you have a question just check back in the comments
to see if i answered. 🙂
i love hearing from you girls.
(and guys too…i think there are a few of you)

Jimaie - what a CUTE bunch of kids!!!!
Also, i love the idea you came up with for your easter “baskets” i think i might steal this and do it next year! 😀
oh and her outfit was the best, totally something i would wear

Tonya - your kiddos are soooo beautiful!

Jennifer P. - Such a fun Easter. I love your presentation!–and you make me want to go buy monkey plates :)!

meg duerksen - Sure had a good time on Spring Break with all the kiddos. I had today off and I slept until 10. Tired!!
Looks like the Easter presents were a hit. Glad I could help.

jerusalem - those tights are too cute! looks like y’all had a fun day!

Allikayes Mama - Oh! My little cutie has those same HOT pink cowgirl boots! They are fabulous!!! :0) Happy Easter to ya!

April - Wow…what a wonderful idea tying the gifts up I stuffed it all in the traditional basket…very sweet !! Love the fun photos your blog is a pleasure.

Lisa Wakely - Looks like everyone had a great Easter. Every time I am in Target (we won’t talk about how often that is) and see those Monkey plates I think of you 🙂

Jilly - I LOVE the picture of the kids, they are SO cute!!!!
Great gifts, love the way that you put them together!

Jenn - I got individual towels for the kids about 5 years ago when we first got married. One thing that drives me crazy is someone else using my bath towel! I don’t even let Russ use mine. To solve the problem – everyone got their own and yes it cut down on laundry. They love their own towels and are posessive of them. Recently Konley and I went shopping and got new ones for everyone.

traci - I too love annies outfit…if you have looked in the catalogs lately that IS the style now!!! LOVE your idea on Easter!!! No baskets filled to the brim with annoying grass and candy for days. pratical, fun, whimsical gifts….HOW COOL. I will have to steal this idea.

Crystal - What a BEAUtiful family!! Looks like you guys had an amazing weekend too!! 🙂 Great Easter “baskets” 🙂

Tiffany C. - I think Annnie’s outfit is marvelous, I wish I could pull of striped tights with boots as well as she does!
Happy Belated Easter :o)

love

last week i saw some love
that i don’t think i’ve seen before.

Img_9908_2

these 2 were sick last monday.
they were cuddled up together watching a movie.
sharing a blanket!
i can’t recall this ever happening.

Img_0047_2

another morning annie said "sean sit by me"
and he said "okay".
that never happens!
they sat and talked to each other over toast.
amazing.

Img_9926_2

she’s feeling better by the way….
she has been begging for me to curl her hair.
pretty cute stuff.

********************************************************************************************

i am at my parents’ house for the next few days.

i have nothing for easter baskets as of friday at 3:00.

we’ll see what i can pull together in 24 hours.

meg duerksen - glad to see i am not the only one who shops last minute!
-meg

melissa @ the inspired room - Happy Easter! I have Easter stuff. In the trunk of the car. 9:42 pm Saturday. Can I pull it together? Will the Easter Bunny deliver this year? He better get hopping!
Blessings,
Melissa

danelle - I have nothing for Easter baskets as of 12:50 Saturday. I need to get busy.

traci - how sweet. it’s great when you see the love between siblings. cute curls on talby. have a wonderful easter.

chris - If they did sweet stuff all the time we would never appreciate it, your kids are so cute.
Happy Easter

Allikayes Mama - I had to rush to Target today to fill the basket! They never let me down! Also, I love those pictures! So precious!

amy - I thought it seemed rather quiet across the street. Your hubby’s been outside working hard though! Happy Easter to you!

Crystal - I took half of my stuff for my sons basket out of our own food cabinet…cheerios, gerber puffs. 🙂
We are swap partners! 🙂 You can email me at mosesmakes3@gmail.com 🙂

Jennifer P. - Love those precious moments of sibling harmony!
I have nothing for my Easter baskets as of 3:48. I forgot I even needed to go buy stuff. Thanks for reminding me :)!

traci - as a mom to 3 aged 10, 11 and 19 I always got VERY excited to see THE LOVE!! when my 19 yr. old was at home and giving his much younger sisters the time of day I just ooooozed with joy. the girls are either totally into each other or wanting to rip the other apart..lol…so all moms know when you find those tender moments you just get sooooo HAPPY.
