dad……part 1

what a nice day.

church…good sermon.
meatballs and mashed potatoes.
swimming…all of us.
golf on tv (craig not me)
painting.
movie on tv.
some gardening.

it was a good father's day…wasn't it craig?
i will assume you agree.

and now let me just say a few things about why i am married to a super dad.

he can install a garbage disposal…
and fixes everything he can around the house.

IMG_5930

IMG_5032
he has a killer lawn.

IMG_8431
he likes to coach the kids…most of the time.

IMG_9318

and then there are those yummy pancakes he makes.

IMG_3996
IMG_4173
IMG_8247
IMG_6276

he plays.
he's there.

IMG_2332

i love him with all my heart.
my kids have no idea how blessed they are to have him.
it's an honor to be his wife.
i am one happy mama.

enough mushy stuff.
he hates it.

JimaieMarie - What a special post, i have to say that i too think he secretly enjoys it, who wouldnt?! 😉
you guys are an ADORABLE family, sounds like you had a great day. Treasure that incredible guy, there aren’t too many of ’em out there….you are TRULY blessed

Jill - Very sweet to honor your hubby… he looks like a super dad!! 🙂 ~Jill

Lanny Stanard - Yes now that’s a great Daddy… Looks like a good day 🙂
Lanny:)

traci - Most kids dont know how blessed they are until they are much older and usually out of the house..lol
Great men are hard to find…we have one and unfortunately take him for granted too much.

melissa @ the inspired room - Aw, that is sweet and mushy. And I bet your hubby secretly loves it. 🙂 We don’t always take enough time being mushy and sentimental, especially after all the kids come and we get tired and weighed down with the cares of life. It is so good to slow down enough to think about how we really feel, how much we treasure our spouse, and say it. Or blog about it!
Happy week,
Melissa

HANNAH MONTANA!
TRAMPOLINE!
WAL-MART!
(or any other words she thinks of that very second)

IMG_3145
TAN-NON-BALL!!!

IMG_3161

she's such a goofball.

joni - Love it! I especially adore her countdown. Priceless.

Jennifer P. - Hannah Montana, Trampoline, Wal-Mart—-that should be JUST what her life is about right now :)! Very cute!

Meredith - Hey! Just wanted you to know how much I am enjoying watching your little goofball grow up…she is such a cutie! 🙂
Mere

Allikayesmama - Hannah Montana! Ha! That is hilarious! I can not wait until my Miss Thing starts talking and coming up with classic material like that!! Whew – you got me laughing over here! Wal-mart!

Jenny - Oh she’s gorgeous! TAN-NON-BAAAAAAAAL!

Liz - Lovely photographs of your waterbaby.

traci - I love the facial expression and the way she is holding her hands…HOW CUTE. Is that her own little pool? It isnt the big pool.

melissa @ the inspired room - Ok, little missy, I just caught up on all of your posts. Gorgeous, I tell ya! Fun and gorgeous.
Happy weekend! How’s that bathroom coming?

sweet belinda

IMG_3114

mixing edible paint.
to get crafty.

IMG_3117

we were making sweet belinda.

talby bought this book with her own money last year.

we are trying to make as many as we can.
(it's a good book…i'd like to get a few of the others too)

IMG_3127
IMG_3120
IMG_3122
IMG_3125

who's eating our paint?!
crafts are messy.
do other moms get stressed out making crafts like i do?
i'm sure they do.
but kids need to make things and use their brains and be artsy.
they need it.
so i will clean it…and relax.
and someday they will remember that we made crafts…i hope.

IMG_3129
oh sweet belinda.

pam - hey – i think i’ve seen you at church. we have some of the same friends. i decided to come clean and leave a comment instead of lurking. 🙂
you’re a super cool mom. my kids thought i was pretty cool until they saw this post! i think they’d love that book.
happy summer.

traci - sweet belinda indeed. what a cute craft. i definately freaked out about craft messes when my kids were little. but i did let my son spread field corn all over all our rugs so that he could farm with his little tractors just like dad. i do miss those days – kind of.

Jennifer P. - I love how the counter starts off looking so clean and then….
You are one A+ Mom whose kids will be little geniuses because you let them get the kitchen as messy as their creativity needed to get it :)!

jes - what a fun mom you are! we all need to make more time for the important stuff in life. stuff like getting messy with our kids. 🙂

Julie K. - I so so do get stressed with the mess of kids and craftiness. Just this year I’ve been able to “get passed it” knowing that the gift they’re getting through the experience outweighs the annoyance of the mess. Like you said … the NEED it!

Suzanne - ok, can you just come & give me a tutorial on EVERYTHING!! i am a former kindergarten teacher, so I love my kids to do stuff like that…and USUALLY don’t get too stressed out about the mess…is that a book that is still available??? what is it called?? what i love about it, is it looks like things you already have around the house! what fun, what fun!

kristin - oh, a very sweet belinda.
i want to see that book.
what a good mama you are.

Stephanie - I found you on Today’s Creative Blog and you have been my inspiration! I love your photos of your kids and that it is not just one big “word” journal. It helped me as I began creating my blog. Thank you!

traci - Yep, I neeeeeed this book for sure. I used to teach preschool so messy crafts do bother me so much I just get irritated when its over and they act like its torture that they help clean after I went to all the trouble and mess to create fun. So I have to get ugly to make them help clean up then we forget all the fun we just had…sigh

Lee Ann - I’m so GLAD you said you get stressed with kids/crafts. I never would have thought. Yes, it’s stressful! Looks like a great book.

cynthia - ooooh! i want this book…
and i will try not to have anxiety of the many messes it will create.
keyword, create.
you’re right…they NEED it!

southernseven - I have to tie myself to the chair so that I don’t help too much, I have to fight the big ol urge to do it for them, you know, help them. And to watch them spill stuff everywhere, really stresses me out. You are too good.

Juliann - Hey lady – i never would have guessed you get stressed with the mess of crafts. I do for sure! But I keep hearing how life with kids goes fast, so I take a deep breath, and plunge in. Luke especially appreciates the freedom to make a mess and get creative; i see the boost in his confidence and doesn’t that make the clean up worth it!!!

free lunch…a long time ago.

IMG_3106

Sc005a016d

7 years ago almost to the day…
i took the kids (only 3 kids then and pregnant with talby) to the
pick-your-own strawberry farm in wisconsin an hour away.

on the drive there
little 6 year old lauren asked "is it going to rain?"
i told her "no. it's not going to rain" trying to will the rain away.
she said "well…it sure looks like it's gonna rain!"
hmmmm.
not helpful.

we picked for awhile and everyone was having a good time.
we were picking boxes full.
but above us…storm clouds were still looming.

Sc005a25be

sean was in the stroller…he was almost one year old.
scott and lauren were picking and eating.

Sc005a8eb6

and then boom!
a down pour of rain hit.
you know the kind…a huge amount of rain in an instant.
we ran to the mini-van.
pushing the big double stroller and the boxes of strawberries.
we are now soaked.

what else is there to do but go to Mcdonald's?
we go inside and it is packed!
(i should have left then…but no.)
we go in…3 wet little kids, me pregnant and dirty from the field AND
i had a bandana on my head because i liked to wear that then. (huh?)
so we were quite a sight.
i wish i had a picture with me in it…it would be so humbling.

we wait in line and order.
after which i realize that wisconsin McD's don't take debit cards yet.
she tells me the bank across the street (highway) has an ATM.

why do i not just say forget it at this point?
i don't have a clue.

instead we run back to the car in the rain.
drive across the highway, get $20 from the ATM and
go back into this still very crowded McDonalds.
i get to the woman who has my order and
i reach into my pocket….
i don't have the $20.
i can't find it anywhere.
i am a mess. (sadly not much has changed)
kids are pulling on me, baby on my hip, and i look ridiculous!

the cashier leans in and whispers
"just take it. go ahead. take it honey"

she assumes (and with very good reason) that we don't have the money
and we can't pay for this meal.
at this point i am close to tears.
and i say "i had it a minute ago i just can't find it"
she gives me a pity smile and whispers again "just take it"

so i did.

IMG_3110

and that's my free lunch.

so maybe if you look homeless enough
and drag in a bunch of kids in rain storm
into a crowded McDonalds in Wisconsin
you could get a free lunch too!

or just pack a sack lunch for the car.

danelle - Funny thing..when i was reading your story I thought you said you had a BANANA on your head. I was thinking WHAT? Then I thought maybe you meant a banana clip (remember those?). Later I caught on you said bandana. Oh! It made the story even funnier!!!

Amy Walker - Hi megan, I was introduced to your blog by Jenn Thomas a couple of months ago. I am an avid reader now, I love all your pictures, stories, ideas, etc. I had an incident with speeding (and unfortunately getting pulled over) about 4 years ago. Nice police man let me off….to this day my mom says “Amy, he took one look in that vehicle and thought poor lady, look at all those kids! I have four and the last two are twin girls!! Anyway I really enjoy yor bolg and you have inspired me to try some things and also to take more pictures. I’m not real good with a camera but I’m hoping to get better:)

Suzanne - Precious, special memories!! Amazing pictures then too!
I wish I could have my pictures post that big, but the large setting on blogger, really isn’t big at all! Do you just use the iPhoto editing or do you have their new software Aperture?? We were just at the Apple store last night & was curious…
I don’t know the history w/YOUR Annie, but I hope & pray that things continue to go well for you all! Your family is just so beautiful! Makes me think that trying for a #4 IS doable!

Shelly - That was a great post! It was cute to see the kids when they were smaller. Thank you for sharing the great story… I may have to try that too =)

traci - OH MY GOSH…there is no way I would have gone in, back to atm and then back in again to a crazy busy atm…WOW.
In situations like that Im the drive thru mom who tells my crying kids to be thankful they even have a mom and dad and arent homeless..lol
Yep, you win the mom award!!!
LOVE your blog…You have even inspired me to get a new camera even though i know your pictures are MORE than just a great camera…you have a really good eye and know what angle to take a picture from.

traci - what a great story. do you giggle now when you think about it, or does a tear run down your cheek? the strawberries look yummy!!

Crystal - Love the last photo! 🙂 Thank goodness for the kindness of strangers! 🙂

lorel - I always liked that story. hee hee.

Heidi - Awwww, what a story! And what lovely photos you take. My sis (Chris) introduced me to your blog while we were staying with her for our mom’s wedding. It’s a delightful blog indeed!

Chaos-Jamie - Too funny! And at McDonalds. Whoda thunk?
(My parents did too like you, they just didn’t talk to anyone (my fault for never bringing people over…my house was too boring and my parents too old in my eyes). My mom liked that you liked her bread. I even remember my dad telling someone off during the summer of ’94 on your behalf.)

southernseven - Oh, I really don’t believe that YOU looked that bad, I have seen your photos and you don’t seem to have one to proove otherwise:)
She probably was more in sympathy of seeing you were just having a bad day. Make sure to find another mom that looks like she is having a bad day and do the same for her- it is so much fun. There is such a difference in the quality of your photos from then to now!

Jenn - One more thing – did you ever find your $20 bill and I was also wondering did you remember to pay for the strawberries?

Jenn - Oh Meg – lol – only you can seem to find the humor/joy/fun in so many situations. How encouraging – will have to remember these stories when things happen with London and the 3 older kids.

betsy - Hey Megan. LOVE your blog! This brings back so many good memories of my mom dragging me and my sisters to pick strawberries every summer. I’m sure it was a bit stressful for her when we were that little, but I’m so happy she did it 🙂 Good times.

Jennifer P. - I will do that! Oh yes I will! Dirty, wet kids, a bandana on my head and all :)!
Even years later though, I feel so sorry for you. Days like that are the ones where you just have to laugh to keep from crying!
Thanks for sharing!—and your pictures were just as beautiful back then!

i {heart} annie

IMG_3074

annie had her cardiologist appt. today.
it went great!
she was nervous but at least she didn't do this.
the hole is still there but since she has never had any problems she is good.
he said she doesn't have to come back until she is 5.
that good news deserves a cupcake!

IMG_3079

or a cookie.
this was a spot we drove by and turned around just to check it out.
how could we not with this cute sign?

IMG_3080
IMG_3076

very yummy.

annie is quite an ornery little girl
but is just so silly and funny too.
here are some goofy things she has said this week.

*about going to the heart dr.

"i don't want to go…will they cut off my belly button?"
*about trying to help carry boxes to the garage sale.
i said "no honey you just aren't big enough."
she stomped her foot and yelled
"i AM strong enough big!!"
*her bedtime prayer tonight:
"dear jesus,
thank for our food.
and thank you for all those new shoes.
and thank you for letting me go to that heart doctor.
thank you keeping talby saved.
thank you for not letting me get snapped by a shark.
and thank you for not letting me get eaten by a monster.
amen."
*when we walked into our neighbor's house
she turned to me to surprise me and said
"See?! it doesn't stink!"
i honestly don't know why she thought it would or that it had??
*and sunday morning she was told she needed a bath.
she smelled her arm and said
"No.  i don't stink well enough"
what a funny funny girl.

michelle - That picture initially made my heart break! I’m so glad to hear she’s all good. And HILARIOUS! Hat’s off to you for writing down her funny remarks too. Those will be cherished. I wish I would have done more of that for both my girls.

carissa - what a precious daughter you have Meg!
FUNNY… CUTE… a gift from GOD!

traci - so glad the dr. appointment went well. what a little trooper she is. heck, i’d go to any kind of doctor for cookies and cupcakes. she is such a doll. love all the funny things she says. i wish i would have written things down that my kids said – cuz now i have no idea if they said anything funny at all.

Linda - Yoyr Annie is so scrumptious, and funny…and healthy!! Yay!!!
Linda

Jill - Brave little Annie!! So glad she got a big old cookie!! ~Jill 🙂

mrslimestone - Im glad your little girl is okay. She is adorable.

Liz - I’m so happy things went well at the dr! She’s brave, I’d freak out with all those things taped all over me!
Good luck telling your hubs. I feel your pain, one time, I ran our brand new car into the front of our house. I’m not proud, but it happened. 🙂

Juliann - Hey Megan – David has a VSD (is that Annie’s too??) His is almost closed – yippee!! – and I had to hold him for the EKG too, even though he was only 6mos. old…its like they know what the “white coats” are for 🙂

Cathie - I just wanted to say that my daughter had this and it stayed until our appointment this year – her 12 year old check up and it had closed.
Praying for the same miracle for your daughter.
She is adorable.
God bless,
Cathie

Lanny Stanard - So So Happy everything went well at the doc’s app! God is so good 🙂
Lanny:)

chris - Thank you for sharing your annieism’s she is so special, we all forget those funny things little kids say .
Glad she got a clean bill of health with her heart.
Chris

Lori Eurto - Oh how scary to go to the doctors like that!! What a brave, FUNNY, adorable girl!
🙂

like a good neighbor

IMG_2960

garage sale success!
between the 5 families…we have a lot of junk.
it was hot.
good thing there was plenty of lemonade.

IMG_2963
IMG_2965

the cupcakes sold out.
i think they made about $15.

IMG_2971

london wanted some too.
she was so content hanging out in her wagon all day.
IMG_2973

making money.
we sold lots of stuff but i did bring home
a big box of clothes from the older neighbor girls for talby and annie.
and a set of white dishes.
but my basement feels a lot less cluttered.
(grandma…we sold your pergo flooring!)
after we cleaned up (and took a nap) we got together for a cookout.

afterwards the kids went to bed and the grown up party started.
it felt good to laugh that much.
and talk to so many adults at once.
it doesn't happen too much for me…kids all the time.
i was really needing some grown up time.
we have great neighbors.
it was such a good day.
thanks neighbors.
i can't wait for the 4th of July.

Emily - Looks like a fun time! It’s great you’re so close to your neighbors. We’re fortunate to be close with our neighbors too and it’s wonderful.

Marie - That’s so awesome to have good neighbors. We’re moving and I am praying hard for good neighbors-it makes a huge difference!

Mrs. Fox - Looks like a nice day. I love having neighbors that are friends, it makes home feel so much more like home. I’m a sucker for Norman Rockwell moments.

meg duerksen - do you hear that neighbor girls?!
we look like we should be in BH&G. i agree of course. 🙂
but also…there is no photo of me in my tye-dye shirt and pigtails.
that would have changed the image a little.
amy said cory would pay her next time to Not have a garage sale.
i think he meant he would pay for our next neighborhood block party….right?
sounds good to me.
i like kristin’s idea too. pizza and beer…no sale. 🙂
-meg

kristin - at the one garage sale we had, we spent the entire days earnings on pizza and beer.
wow.
we decided next time we would just do the pizza and beer part.

traci - so glad it was a success. looks like you had some awesome stuff there. what a way to end the day – food, friends and fun.

Jenn - Bobby…. throw another hotdog on the grill. I am still laughing at Corey’s impersonation. What a great day we had – I still think I would had as much even if I hadn’t sold anything – it wasn’t about the money I told Russ. Jenn

traci - WOW..london is getting big! Do you even really know how special it is that you have such a wonderful neighborhood with great friends/neighbors??? I like my neighborhood but are cozy with any of my neighbors….Gorgeous home, loving hubby, healthy kids, fabulous community…you really have a great life!!

Jennifer P. - Looks like they could have done a feature story on that day for BHG—and used all your amazing pictures to boot! Glad you cleaned out and scored at the same time :)!

julie - You have such a fun neighborhood! Congrats on the sale.

Lanny Stanard - Megan, looks like you had a great day and sold alot… I’m having a sale this thursday and friday so wish me luck! Have a great week!
Lanny:)

Staci - How fun! Makes me a little sad we live on 30 acres and not a neighborhood?? Glad all the work paid off!

Allikayesmama - How fun to have such amazing neighbors! I need some good grown-up laugh time too!! I need to make that happen! And again, you made garage sale pictures look so great and professional!! :0)

courtney - i have no idea how i found your blog…or when really. it’s in my “favorites” and i love to check it regularly. i love your “simple” style. anyways, will you divulge what kind of camera you have?? your pictures are amazing!!
glad your yard sale went well. sounds like you’re blessed with a great neighborhood!

Good luck w/your sale! You just look like the coolest mom ever…

Juliann - Hi Megan – looks like fun! Our neighborhood garage sale is this weekend too, it started today…wishing I was organized enough to do it, esp. with all the cars driving by while we played outside. Lauren is a very good photographer, your new bathroom looks great! Thanks for your encouragement on my blog. have a great weekend!

traci - Im with the others…I WISH I could come to ya’ll garage sale. I see stuff I want just looking at your picture..lol

April - wish I lived closer…what a deal on cupcakes and lemonade….darn it !!

Lee Ann - Oh I wish I lived closer so I could play in your hot sun and come look through your “junk”. As a teenager I would never even get out of the car when my parents would go to garage sales.
