halloween memories

fall is so full of memories!
i got lost in the fall photos and blog posts over the last 9 years.  🙂
and then got into the photo albums too.
i couldn’t find ALL of our halloweens because half of our photo albums are still at the Craft House – oops.
we have had 21 Halloweens – that is a lot of costumes and pumpkins!

SO MUCH FUN!!!
gosh i love these people like craaaaaazy.
my heart is full.
filled to the tippy top with love right now.

Octobers are THE BEST!!!

Jenny B. - Aahhhh! I love when you do these posts (I think you did one for first day of school recently too?). Anyway, I love them, but they make me cry! And they’re not even my kids! Sigh…

se7en - Oh my word I think I have been following your blog forever and memories of little superheroes came flooding back!!! How rich are these memories… tooo sweet!!!

chrissi - love each photo. you do halloween so well.

KWolff - Reading through this post made me want to curl up in my office and start going through boxes of old photos to find Halloween shots. If I hadn’t had to stroll the neighborhood with my favorite 5 year old werewolff I probably would have.
Your photos are great. I love that the costumes varied from homemade to store bought to everything in between. That’s the way our Halloweens are. It sure makes for some fun photos!
Thanks so much for sharing.

sharon / tpt - sooo full of memories. there is something so so special about fall. it makes a momma cry! our babies…
happy fall season to you! enjoyed the memory lane~

cathie w. - This was so fun! My kiddos are still pretty tiny – so I’m looking forward to being able to flip through all our photo memories when they’re big ole’ teenagers.

Jenny Joy - I loved this so very much!!!

Renee Cook - Omg. Stop. I have 3 under 4 & this makes me want more so that I can haveadorable photos of many many children in 15 years!! They are all so cute.

Tiffany - What a kick in the pants to get my photos organized!!

tasha roe - so many great memories! makes my heart happy

Jamie Burdorf - These are absolutely priceless. A good reminder you can never take too many pictures!!

back to school ’16

another school year has begun.
annie in 6th grade… talby is a freshman… sean a sophomore… scott started college!
whaaaat??
untitled (1 of 36)
how fun are those overalls?!
between that and the birks i thought it 1994 again.
and annie’s shirt – i wish it came in my size!
IMG_1564IMG_1572IMG_1581untitled (2 of 36)untitled (3 of 36)
one thing that is different about this school year is that sean has his driver’s license!
he is LOVING the freedom that brings.

untitled (4 of 36)
starting school is a great reason for donuts (if anyone needs a reason).
IMG_1563IMG_1876
scotty started his freshman year at Tabor College.
i cried.
often.
but i’m excited for him… he’s going to do GREAT!
IMG_1895
i mean he’s got 36 Ramens – what else would he need?
IMG_1903IMG_1909IMG_1921IMG_1926FullSizeRender
i made his bed one last time.
and hit my head three times!
IMG_1910
we have dropped a child off at college once already but it didn’t get easier.
it’s HARD to walk away and leave your kid!
but our pastor reminded me this morning that getting the years with our kids that we do is a gift!
we get time with them in our homes and in our every day and then they have to move on.
we raise them to leave.
it’s good.
it hurts but it’s a good hurt… it’s growth!

what a privilege to be all these kids’ mom!!

IMG_1932
🙂  Scotty i miss you!
do your best and try hard in all your classes!
i am so glad i get to be your mom!   🙂
IMG_1934
and then… craig and i took off for a weekend away with NO kids!
we realized it was the only weekend before sports and all the STUFF for the next two months so we got outta town!
it was such a great way to ease into the new transition.
we slept!
we went to movies both nights!
we ate really good mexican food!
and talked lots and lots about everything.
it was a great weekend!

.
and just for fun….

funny how my oldest child isn’t in ANY of the group back to school photos….
#funnynotfunny

and all of her elementary school first day pictures aren’t digital.
oh well.
she DID go to school even if she didn’t get in the photos.

🙂

Sharon / tpt - I agree with you. I agree with your Pastor, and I agree with your getaway!♡

Kasey - These pictures made me cry too. The tears started when you said you made his bed one last time. I want to freeze time with my 8 and 5 year old boys.

Tina - I just love your posts! I just see so many similarities between your 5 and my 5. Love it!

Ps-Talby’s shirt does come in your size. I’m wearing it today. Got it at Target. Going back to by the other colors it comes in. Don’t forget your cartwheel app too….it’s 20% off.

Jenny B. - I ditto Kimberlee! They have grown so much, and it’s crazy how time moves so much faster as we get older. Sigh… I needed to read this today. My oldest (6th grade) has been driving me nuts lately. I need to remember that my time with him is a gift. <3

Ruth Elder - Seeing the old photos just reminds me of how long I have been following your blog! lol And also that I need to plant more flowers next year.

Kimberlee Jost - Were they really that young when you lived at the farm? But it wasn’t that long ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tracy - We took our second oldest to Ku last week. You’re right! It wasn’t any easier than the first! Thanks for sharing what your pastor said…I love that and will try to keep that in mind!

Kelly Munger - The picture of Scott standing in his room, the one after you on the bed, made me cry! Why??? My oldest is just a freshman in high school so I still have a few years until that’s my boy standing in his dorm room but I’m already feeling the hurt of his growing up. How is he almost done here?! (this is seriously too much for a Monday!)

Patti - I only hae one….he is 28 now but when we dropped him off at college I think I sobbed for two weeks….I was nothing short of a hot mess lol…..now when he comes home at 28 i’m like ok…it’s time for you to go home and leave a mess of dishes in your own sink! lol

Tiffany - The throwbacks tho, priceless.

Beth - Well that was all fun and games until you posted the throwback pictures…and I cried! And I don’t even know you personally. Oh, it’s all too much! My girls are the age of your throw back pictures and it got me. Gosh, this mom stuff is so good…and so hard!

beth larson - Meg…what a great post, I especially loved all the old first day of school photos you took the time to post. All just so darling. The other fave? The case of Ramen noodles…haha

Kristi Rediske - I love how waffle is looking out your door in the going back to school pics-I think he is wondering why he doesn’t get to be in any pictures-the black dog does-HA! I love seeing the pictures through the years you posted, time goes so quickly-I am so glad someone invented cameras so we can have those precious memories to look back on.

Iris Brown - I cried while reading your entire post. So true. I then chuckled in the end.

Lori - Love the back to school pictures, and I can’t believe Scott is starting college! Glad you got a grown-up weekend to yourselves before all the crazy sets in 🙂

so much water!

first things first – winner of the Amazon gift card!

Christy – According to my dad, the best give ever gave him was tickets for us all to see a St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds game. We had a great day together and he got to see his favorite team pull off a win!

i will email the address on the comment.  If you don’t hear from me – email me ok?!  Congrats Christy!

our area of kansas has had tons of rain recently so we took the opportunity of the long weekend to hit one of our favorite spots!

normally this isn’t a creek.
it’s usually dry or just a little swampy… but not now!

and then we went to the waterfall… whoa.

some years this is just rocks with a trickle of water going into a stale pond.
some years there is a nice area to wade around in.
but this was SO COOL!
and so loud!

this might appear dangerous looking at the pictures but we felt confident in our parenting decisions and supervising during our time.
🙂
at the bottom of the “falls” was still only knee deep water and no raging rapids that would drag them away forever.

we recreated one of my favorite pictures from the past.
love! love! love!

IMG_6826IMG_6829
i always make them take a family photo in this spot.
we were down a few kiddos this time but that is life with a busy family.

IMG_6830IMG_6846
we ate lunch in front of the lake and it was pretty much the best spot in the world at that moment.

IMG_6851IMG_6847

it is always one of my favorite days of the year.

here are links to other years we’ve gone.
it’s fun to see how much they’ve all grown!
2014  –  2013  –  2012  –  2010  –  2008

Kimberly Dial - How awesome is that?! Love it!

Lisa - The first time I ever visited your blog it was about this location years ago. Always love the pictures from this location. So beautiful!

shar - one time we went there and my brother brad was going under that yellow gate thingy and my cousin andrew was jumping over at the same time… and andrew had a fishing pole in his hand!! bradley had a fishhook in his eyebrow for the rest of the eve!!!! we lov that place

shar - love that place. we go there somx

Gevay - Looks like fun! I love how happy everyone is especially Stanley! The fact that you had to put a parenting disclaimer in the post is sad. That means you have gotten emails form someone questioning your choices for your family. Ugh! Thanks for continuing to share your beautiful world with us despite “those” people. Have a great summer, Meg!

Tina - What gorgeous pictures! Looks like y’all had a blast!

Best quote eva “Felt confident in our parenting decisions.” 🙂

Thanks for sharing your family’s excursions.

Natasha - Wow! I am so excited to show is this to my husband and plan a trip soon! Could be a day trip too I guess as we’re in Lenexa. Have you ever camped there?

beth larson - Meg!! I haven’t commented in a while, but I just loved this post. You look like one of the kids~ just adore your long hair in braids. : )

Hey question for you, did you take these photos with your phone or a camera? I have no luck putting cell pics on my blog because they won’t enlarge. It’s so inconvenient to always have to drag my real camera along…

Have a great weekend, Beth xo

Kerrin - Hey Meg,
Just heard your interview on The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey. It was really really great. Your wisdom about parenting was very encouraging. You also gave me a lot to think about regarding time away with my husband. We have only ever been away once since our daughter was born (10 years ago!). It never occurred to me that it would be worth all the work it would be to make it happen. So many thanks for all that you shared. May God continue to bless you, your family and the amazing work you are doing at the Craft House.

Heather S. - Ah, yes! We went out there once. but it was during one of those sad trickle times. I’d seen photos on the internet and was stoked to see such a great waterfall right here in Kansas. It was not to be, but looks like you got the full deal! Kansas really is a beautiful state. Proud to live here (and happy to drive all around the country to see the rest)!

Lee Ann - Beautiful! And I LOVE your comment about your parenting decision. Made me laugh. I’m sure you get lots of “advice” about your parenting decisions 😉 Kansas is gorgeous!

meg duerksen - CP, Kerri & Christie – this is the Chase Co. Fishing Lake. 🙂

Jennifer Thomas - Aww Megan, this was always a favorite spot to go. The first time Russ and I went with the kids it looked like this. We never again saw this much water….good to see that someone in Kansas is still enjoying this great spot. We have mapped out a loop in Ohio to travel and see different waterfalls.

CP - Where can I find this waterfall? We really have this in Kansas?

Heather - The link to 2014 is the same as 2008! We live about an hour from the beach, and I wish we had somewhere close like this! That looks nice and cool and secluded!

Kerri - Our beautiful state is absolutely gorgeous this spring! (BTW, where is this spot?)

Christie Smith - Can I ask where this is? It is beautiful.

Jennifer Greeley - That looks like so much fun!

Lori - Gorgeous! Looks like an awesome day 🙂

Tiffani - Fave. Blogger. Ever. Thanks for continuing to give us all the goodness.

vacation 2015 – part one

my favorite week of the summer is vacation week.
i get craig and my kids all to myself.   🙂
we get to just hang out with our kids all week and do only fun things!
no chores!  no work!  no sports!
it’s a sacred week for me.
i look forward to it for 51 weeks a year!

our kids had been begging to go back to The City Museum in St. Louis so we decided to stay one night in St. Louis on our way to Michigan.  The City Muesem is SO COOL!  Our kids were off running around the whole time and i literally sat in a chair and chilled… for hours.  I had no need to go down a 10 story slide or crawl under floors.  They came back soaked with sweat and happy as can be.
if you have never gone to the City Museum… YOU HAVE TO DO IT.
i mean it.

city2
that is sean… up in a tiny wire cage 11 stories above the ground.
i was having heart palpitations just getting this photo.
he said “WHY? You’re not even up here?!”
fear of heights is a weird thing… it’s not logical.
but it’s so crazy real!

IMG_0771IMG_0758IMG_0699
we also had a very VERY hot and sweaty trip to the St. Louis Zoo… along with about a million other people.
we didn’t last too long.
it’s a BEAUTIFUL zoo!  AND it’s FREE!
but it was soooo hot and soooo crowded that we took off pretty quickly.

annie had been looking forward to going to Fitz’s for their famous root beer floats again.
they did not disappoint.
🙂
fitz1
we went late afternoon and every one got their own HUGE float and then we ate pizza at about 10 PM.
so it was basically ice cream for dinner.
(another thing i love about vacation…)
IMG_0728IMG_0718
mine was called the Loop Da Loop – root beer with coffee ice cream & chocolate sauce.
dang.
i loved it.

drive
in the morning we loaded back up and hit the road towards Michigan.
the big van we use for Craft Weekend is so good for vacation!
everyone gets their own row!
but sometimes they share a spot to play games or watch dvds together.
the boys just lay down and sleep.
not complaining about that one bit.

IMG_1304
everyone asked on every instagram picture “where do you stay?”
and we all thought it was funny because anywhere along the water all the way up michigan is awesome.
it’s all so nice.
we tend to stay near St. Joseph area because it’s what we know best.
we get on vrbo.com and find a place… like a year ahead of time.
its always a gamble… and this year the house was less than stellar in MANY ways… except the location could cancel all of the other things out.
we were right on the beach!
we didn’t have to go up or down 213 stairs to get to the beach or the house.
that was really great!
within minutes the kids were in the water and happy as can be.

we share a house with our friends from Illinois when we go to michigan.
it’s a special friendship when you know you can handle a week in close quarters with 6-7 kids.
this was our sixth vacation together!
IMG_0826
the first thing we do is go get groceries… without kids or dads.
we figure out what we are cooking for the week and work through our list.
it takes forever but then we are set for the week!
IMG_0842
IMG_0894IMG_0904IMG_0912IMG_0922IMG_0926IMG_0872IMG_0861IMG_2623
all these kids just keep growing up!
so rude.
IMG_2626IMG_2629
we almost always end up going on vacation over the week of sean’s birthday.
so on his big 15th birthday we let him choose our activity.
GO CARTS!
and then he even beat everybody!  they definitely weren’t letting him win either.
everyone was trying really hard to get in front but sean won on his birthday.
i like that.
gocartgocarts3gocarts2
and then we played mini golf too!
for all of our activities, Dave had us pair up in teams to compete for washing the dishes that day.
ha ha ha
no one ever chose to be with me or with Jenny! i guess because we are the moms? but guess which team won every ativity?!! Team: Hot Moms! That’s right!  We dominated at all activities and were off Dish Duty all week.  🙂
golfgolf3golf2
on our way we drove by this crazy place and i begged to stop.
because… duh.
it was part statue store – part junk yard.

IMG_1061IMG_2787
i was in love with the old signs!IMG_2786IMG_2802IMG_2783
IMG_1082IMG_1092IMG_1066#jesusselfie

IMG_1071IMG_1089
i’m trying to convince scott to use this for his senior photo in the year book.  🙂

we went to Chili’s for sean’s birthday dinner and rushed back to have birthday cake on the deck before the sunset.

IMG_2808
i sure do like that 15 year old guy.
he is nice.  he is considerate.  he is funny.  he is a big teddy bear.  🙂
IMG_1096IMG_1094
that’s my view for all of our road trips… that smile and saying funny stuff to me all the time.

IMG_1101
my girls learned to play card games at camp… in particular… they learned to play B.S.
talby calls it Bologna Slices.
and that brought a whole new element to vacation.
jake and abby already knew how to play.
it was so funny listening to them try to trick each other.
IMG_1130IMG_1132
now that our kids have all gotten older – they all sleep in!
and they make their own breakfasts!
and even have dance parties in the kitchen.
i like big kids!

the dads leave super early every morning and go golfing.
(whatever… that sounds horrible to me!)
then jenny and i get up hours later and make coffee and sit outside to talk.
and slowly slowly slowly the kids wake up one at a time and peek out to say good morning.
then they would each go back to their electronic device of choice leaving us to talk some more.
around lunch time the dads come back and we all head to the beach.
DREAMY!!!
IMG_1257IMG_1120IMG_0998IMG_1283
skipping rocks is a vacation must.IMG_1294
IMG_1282
IMG_1215IMG_1201IMG_1325
jake brought his Spikeball game.
My kids had seen it on shark tank and were excited to play.

more vacation to come… but this is already long enough.

🙂

Annie - Thank you for sharing-an iconic summer vacation! This made me nostalgic for a weekend I spent at Cape Cod. Time slows to a crawl, ice cream floats (amazing by the way…) are what’s for dinner, and all schedules are thrown out the door like Fred does to Dino in the Flintstones! You are blessed with such an active, vibrant family. This was such a joyful post. God bless you!

Katie - We live here and love it!!

Susan - I’m a Lake Girl who loves Michigan Lakes! You have to go to Traverse City it’s a Michigan must. Do you look for beach glass on vacation? We love the hunt!

Becky - I used to live in St. Joseph, MI! It is beautiful there but the winters were COLD! We rarely swam in the Lake because the lake temp was never really that warm. We worked near the lighthouse and would eat our lunches there. Loved the drive into Chicago and stopping at all the local art galleries along the way. The sand dunes along the shore line were also awesome. It has been almost 20 years so I’m sure it has changed quite a bit, but it brings back great memories!

Kimberlee Jost - That picture of Dave and Jenny om the shoreline is gold. Blow that up and mail it to them for the anniversary. BEAUTIFUL.

Laura in Sacto - Amazing and dreamy pictures! Coffee, blanket and that view! Amazeballs.

jamie - and if you haven’t been to saugatuk or grand haven, you really must. you will fall in deep love.

jamie - doesn’t lake michigan just make your heart skip a beat? the hubs and i had a rare overnight alone so we drove straight down US12 west three hours from our house {we live right off of US12} and stayed in new buffalo. famous burgers {for me} and fabulous breweries {for the hubs}. we found off the beaten path little towns with great shops and beautiful trails in the middle of the forest. so happy you enjoy michigan!

Lynette - Sounds like a fabulous vacation. you’ve inspired me to be more intentional about planning a vacation with my family next summer!

Talia - What a great trip! Looks like it was loads of fun.

Toni :0) - I live in Michigan and love the St. Joseph area. We’ve stayed many times. We are in Empire right now just south of Sleeping Bear and it’s cold, rainy and cloudy. So not beachy weather and we are sorely bummed out. Must have bought a boogie board and beach cart and can’t use any of it. :0( Glad you had nice weather on your vacation.

marcie - The house may not have been great but “location, location, location!!” So beautiful. I haven’t been to Michigan or the lakes since I was young (Southern gal) but it looks fabulous. And get Talby a modeling gig – or lock her up for a few years LOL – what a pretty young lady!!!

Stephanie - Wow. That actually sounds like vacation. Some day! Thanks for sharing this!

Katie - Looks like so much fun!!

Sabrina - Your vacations give me hope!! Every year for the past five years since we’ve been married, we go to Michigan. And every year we seem to add a new kid. 😉 We now have 3 boys under the age of 5 and it does NOT feel like a vacation. Yes, it’s fun to see family and friends and go to the beach and play. But vacationing with a baby, toddler and a preschooler is brutal. The struggle is real.

fondue party

IMG_5299
every year craig’s side of our family has a fondue night at christmas.
like… craig’s WHOLE life.
kind of a fun traditional that i am glad they still keep up.
several people on IG asked for more information so they could do this with their family.
i will try my best to help you out.
it’s not really MY thing so i may miss some details.
we usually host which means i make sure my house is clean and there is space for every one.
then the other family members bring the food and set it up.

IMG_5302
there is usually one pot of oil and one pot of  broth to cook meat.
we have steak & chicken cut into small pieces & shrimp every year.
occasionally there have been chicken nuggets or meatballs too.
then bbq sauce, ketchup, cocktail sauce, A1 and…. i can’t recall what other sauces.
i think you could have any sauce you wanted.

there is always a cheese fondue.
this recipe would work fine or something like it.
we dip bread and veggies into the cheese.
someone cuts the bread into cubes with an electric knife.
this is the place i have a hard time staying away from.
melty cheese and bread.
YUM.
IMG_5329
someone makes a caramel dip and a chocolate dip for fruit, marshmallows and angel food cake.
(this is the kids favorite area)

and then everyone brings their christmas snacks from home too like muddy buddies and sugar cookies.
this year i didn’t bake ONE single thing so i purchased cream puffs and eclairs from the freezer aisle.
it counts for something.  🙂

We have all kinds of ways to make this work.
we have an Oster Fondue Pot that gets used every year…varies what is in it though depending on the needs.

the oil is always in a wok like this: Aroma Electric Wok

this year my sister in law put the chocolate and caramel in her new Crock-Pot Hook Up Connectable System.
i totally want to get that system!
amazon seems to be out of reasonably priced crock pot hook ups to link to but i found them here at walmart.

the cheese dip was in a ceramic dish on a Hot Plate.
it works!

we have LOTS of Fondue Forks  to keep track of which food is yours.
although some people still like to steal your meat if you don’t get to it quick enough.

You want to make sure that cords are out of reach from children to avoid burns… obviously.
we have even taped down cords in the past before we had an island with electrical outlets.
safety first for all of your guests.

do you have more questions?
do you have suggestions for us – something that your family does differently?
what kind of food do you see missing?
let’s hear it!

AND lastly…. check out this peanut butterscotch fondue!!!
we are making this one next year.
🙂

ss_R180631

Sue Linse - We also do Fondue every Christmas day. Have tried to do it at the table, but too many people so I want to try the island idea. For meat sauces, we also have honey mustard, horseradish sauce and teriyaki. For the chocolate fondue, we include maraschino cherries, pound cake and clementine oranges. Fun tradition.

Amanda - Small Home Big Start - So much fun!! We do cheese fondue every couple of years for my brother and sister’s birthdays in December. My fav things to dip in it are bread (obviously), sliced apples and blanched broccoli. The leftover cheese is great cooled in the fridge and then grated over steamed broccoli and cauliflower as a gratin. This is the recipe we use: http://smallhomebigstart.com/2012/02/cheese-fondue.html

Kimberlee Jost - I love this so much. It makes me want all of my cousins to live near me so that I could gather them up for a party like this. Hmmm…maybe I’m going to have to adopt some people. I think I know who and it involves Circles. 🙂

Rebekah - Meg, you needs tripod so that you can take pictures and actually be in the picture and not just show your face at a weird angle!!

Jennifer Andersen - A chocolate fountain would totally fit in there. Love the whole idea. Well done.

Amanda - Our family loves fondue too. It’s the time and conversations that you have that make it such a nice option to a regular meal. We like to end our meal with a round tube of refrigerated biscuits. Take one biscuit and place an unwrapped Hershey kiss and wrap/roll the uncooked biscuit dough around it. Then cook it in the oil fondue (no fork required just drop carefully to not get burned by oil). When done, it is like a doughnut with melted chocolate in the middle. Roll it in powdered sugar or regular sugar. Yummy!

lisa - What a FUN tradition!! All of those choices sound super yummy. My one thing is how do you make sure that the meat is cooked through!!? & that no one eats undercooked chicken? My under-cooked & raw-chicken-sitting-out-at-room-temp-too-long anxiety wants to know!! {sigh – lol!!}

Tiffany - Traditions, big and small, are such a sweet way to bring family together. Thanks for sharing this one.

Michelle - i have zero experience with fondue so please forgive my ignorance. Does having to cook the meat cause a big hold up in the movement of the supper line? Also is the meat seasoned with any salt or other seasoning before it’s cooked? this seems like a really fun idea, just trying to wrap my head around the full concept. Thanks!

vanessa schroeder - My family used to do this but sitting around the table. If your piece of food you dipped into the pot fell off the stick we had to give the family member on our right a kiss on the cheek! Sometimes we got Grandma & Grandpa to approve hugs as the cousins got older!

Kelly - We got SMART this year after learning from a chaotic celebration last year and since a bunch of family lives in town we split up the “kid present night” from the “grown up present night”. We got a baby-sitter and my mom treated us to million dollar spaghetti, a terrific salad, rolls, etc. and caramel fondue for dessert. We used to do that a lot as teenagers in our house but hadn’t had the fondue in ages. I thought the cream puffs in your photo were one of our favorite dippers at first – the toasted coconut covered marshmallows! Super yummy! I know it is over the top but I also like brownies dipped in fondue. Angel food cake is probably my favorite though so yay for that! Fun tradition! Kelly

Emily - Thank you so much for sharing this family tradition. I’m always looking for fun things to do with extended family when they come to my house to visit. What a great memory to create. I will be looking up those woks and crock pots. Thank you for all the info!

chrissi - we were just talking about having a fondue party. your party looks like so much fun. reminds me of growing up with lots of cousins and kitchen chaos. the best kind of memories.

Julie - Yum – my first and only cheese fondue was tried in Switzerland many years ago. Such a fun way to eat. I have to ask though, what is a muddy buddie?

Janel - I love love to do Fondue… Another fun alternative
is using a Raclette Pan. You can even find Raclette cheese for this very purpose. You basically grill thinly sliced potatoes on top and underneath the grill you melt your cheese in single serving pans. When the potatoes are cooked and cheese melted, you plate your potatoes and pour melted cheese over top and eat. Repeat repeat repeat…

I have done thinly cut meats and veggies to change
It up. What I haven’t done yet is fruit..I think that would be fun!

I purchased my Raclette pan on amazon
And googled my way thru for the best outcome.

Have fun!

thanksgiving is not my holiday… i am not a foodie…i’ve never made a turkey…. i don’t looove turkey… it’s always been a weird not-so-awesome day to me.
BUT i try.
i try to get into the thanksgiving spirit every year.

so here is me giving it the old college try.
maybe it will help you come up with a great last minute ideas too?

i like these ideas for conversation starters at thanksgiving. (from here)

  • Express thanks to someone in the room for something they did for you.
  • “I’m thankful for…” Finish the sentence.
  • If you could have the attention of the whole world for 30 seconds, what would you say?
  • One thing I’m thankful for about our country.
  • “I got in so much trouble…” Tell the story! This question is always a hit with the kids.
  • What is the key to success in life? Why do you say that?
  • Tell about a lesson you learned the hard way and how you are thankful for what it taught you.
  • What are some ways life is different now than in the old days?
  • Tell a story of a decision your ancestors made that changed the direction of their lives-and yours.
  • Tell about a lesson you learned by watching someone else.
  • “A person I would like to honor publicly is…”
  • “Time and money aside, I would rather be…”
  • Tell about an experience that changed you for the better.
  • Tell a story about something that started out bad but had a happy ending.
  • “My first hero was _________.”
  • Tell about a time when you showed courage.
  • Describe a teacher who had a significant influence on your life.
  • Tell about an invention that made your life easier.
  • “The most admired public figure when I was growing up was ____.” Tell a story.
  • Tell about a memorable event in your life.
  • “A famous person I’ve met is _____.” Tell about the experience.

annie is feeling better today so we are pulling out the art supplies and making these turkey drawings.

you could arrange your veggies like a turkey….

or your cheesbeall.

butterscotch pie sounds as good as pumpkin pie to me.

this sweet potato casserole looks amazing and it’s even Paleo.

we don’t have to overthink decorations.
leaves in glass containers = done

this pie looks yummy to me… not quite a pecan pie… not quite an apple pie.

these chalk place mats are simple and make a statement.  🙂

i love how they took this tea towel and framed it!
i saw it and thought “$22 for a tea towel? my kids would RUIN THAT in 10 seconds!”
but framing it and turning into a statement piece on your wall… game changer!  I lOVE it.
so… i feel a little more ready for the thanksgiving weekend.
don’t you?
please tell me…

are you hosting?
do you make the turkey?
what is your favorite part of thanksgiving?

Kristin - I’m late to the party…we hosted, made the turkey, favorite part is family (and food)! I LOVE your conversation starters. I mentor a class called Education for MInistry, and we start every class with worship & then an on-board/check in question. Many of these are perfect for that…thanks so much!

Kimberlee Jost - Someone gave me that tea towel recently and a frame is the perfect idea. 🙂

Heather s. - So not.my.favorite. Really.

I could do without all the food, cooking for hours, overstuffed houses with overstuffed people. I’d rather just have the people I love over for brunch and maybe a Just Dance competition. 😉

KirstenP - Pumpkin pie, using the recipe on the Libby’s can and refrigerator pie crusts, and whipping the cream, is the easiest part. I do the simplest turkey – I rub softened butter on the skin and stick it in a Reynold’s Oven Bag and put it in a disposable aluminum pan. It takes less baking time too. Hate making gravy so I just add the dripping and broth to a can of cream of chicken soup. Enjoy making stuffing with sausage and sauteed-in-butter chopped apples.
Thanksgiving is a stressful holiday for me because I host and do all the cooking.I hate the last hour getting potatoes done along with all the last minute stuff.
I miss watching my mom making cranberry orange relish. The fresh cranberries and whole oranges(including the rind) are put in an old fashioned meat grinder. Love the sound of the popping sound of the cranberries.

CathyMA - Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday. It always has been, and it’s probably because it’s right around my birthday. I’m hosting this year and you can tell because my house smells so good right now. 21 people will be here for dinner, then 9 more for dessert. This morning I ran our town’s Turkey Trot with my 10 year old son for the first time and it was so much fun, I will never forget it. It’s a stress free holiday for me where I can just be with family and friends without gifts, but lots of good food.

Kirsten J - Not my favorite holiday, either….probably mostly because my parents spend the winter in AZ and so my sister goes to her in-laws, and I always miss my mom. It’s been almost 20 years since I had Thanksgiving with my family. Wahhhhh. So I usually make my daddy a turkey dinner as soon as they come back up for Christmas. We’re going to my sister-in-law’s tomorrow. And….she’s not the greatest cook. This year, besides the turkey/mashed potatoes/stuffing (which is usually pretty edible) we’re having Yugoslavian sauerkraut and some sweet potato casserole – it should be an adventure! *ahem*

Paula Duey - We are staying home this year as it is Elk hunting season. My Dad came down to have turkey day with us and to hunt with the boys. Our middle daughter and Grandson( almost 2) are here too. I am the one who now makes the turkey dinner since my Mom passed away 4 yrs ago. I got the pumpkin pies made and the cranberry sauce today, yeah! My favorite part of the dinner (or late lunch) is the leftovers. My Grandma used to serve a late lunch turkey dinner and then we would snack off and on all afternoon and then have turkey sandwiches for dinner, yumm!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Jena Selph - I love Thanksgiving! Time spent with family, delicious food, and no gifts or shopping for gifts…win win! Yes, I’m hosting but it’s a very small group. That’s ok, our small group will be together. 🙂 Cooking a turkey is seriously so easy! Try it, you will be surprised what little effort it takes. I’m off to paint turkeys with my girls, using your inspiration. Many thanks and happy Thanksgiving to you!

Lisa Biedebach - Why I like thanksgiving- it is the only major holiday that doesn’t involve gifts. It is all about be grateful to God for his blessings. Love that. I dislike how it is overlooked and crowded out by Halloween and Christmas. I will not decorAte for Christmas until thanksgiving is over. Plus I am a mayflower descendent so I feel it is more my holiday.

stephany - I have cooked a turkey and all the fixin’s every year that we have been married (that’s 14 years)!

I have hosted my parents at our house the past two years.

Since we moved to Oregon 9 years ago, we have spent Thanksgiving in Idaho, Colorado, and at friends houses here in Oregon.

Tomorrow it will just be our family of four…and one of Ryan’s cousins who just moved to Washington. We’ll probably invite our neighbors over for dessert and drinks, too.

I would LOVE to host a big gathering at our house every year. I LOVE cooking the meal and having our house filled with friends and family.

Nothing better than food, friends, football {and, maybe some wine} all day long!

The next day we usually go cut down our Christmas tree and spend the rest of the weekend watching more football and getting the house decked for Christmas.

Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday of all.

Julie - I love Thanksgiving! I have hosted before, but my parents have moved back to our home town and live in a large house (my grandparents’ old house) and they have room to host it again. Plus they are more centrally located for the siblings than I am. This year my mom is doing the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy and I am doing the rest. So far I have done six pies, (one more to go), sweet potatoes, broccoli salad and the rolls are in the fridge. I still will make honey butter and one more pie today and then tomorrow will shape and bake the rolls and make crock pot corn.

Jenn - I love Thanksgiving! I love to cook and bake. Its the stress free holiday for me. I’ve baked a turkey once because of the amount of people we were hosting (we had 3 turkeys total). Most of the time, I’m just asked to bring sides. I’m sure in the not so distant future I will be asked to host again and baked the turkey…glad to do it! A new tradition that my little family has started is running in the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. This is my favorite part of the day. Its cold and early, but 1500 people are walking and running on Thanksgiving morning….its fun! Happy Thanksgiving Meg!

Christi {Jealous Hands} - Meg! Thank you so much for sharing these ideas – I had seen NONE of them, but I am going to be using some of them for tomorrow.

I AM hosting, yes – at least 11 people. We have an open door Thanksgiving & never know for sure who will be here (other than those 11).

I DO make the turkey – in fact, two 24 pounders (roasting only, no brine).

And my favorite part of Thanksgiving is opening our doors to whoever will come. Love it.

Happy Thanksgiving! xo

twelve

talbythis is talby at her 3rd birthday.  we even got the huge Dora helium balloon.
annie was 9 days old for this party and we moved to Kansas the week after her birthday.

IMG_0363
talby requested the yummy cake from sam’s club.
i was super happy to do that. (saves time on busy birthdays)  i picked up the star picks at target.
but i added the glitter.
and i glittered the candles too… which you can tell when it’s close up but not enough to matter.
martha would care.
i do not… i just wanted some glitter for the GOLDEN day.

fyi…a golden birthday is when you birth date matches your age…it’s a made up thing… just makes it fun when it happens.
so she turned twelve on the twelfth.
and then sean turns 14 on the 14th next year (in 2014!!)
we missed everyone else’s in our family.

for talby’s Golden Birthday i thought it would be fun to get her a “Golden Gift”.
basically i just wandered through stores and picked out anything i could find that was GOLD.
IMG_1243IMG_1249
gold chocolate coins … gloves … a necklace & earrings … party decorations … thank you cards …
gold pencils … gold sharpie … gold pens & stickers from the $1 Spot at target … gold nail polish …
gold polka dot shirt … sparkley sunglasses … glitter spray for your hair …. a gold pouch
all in a gold gift box covered in glitter!!!
IMG_1248IMG_1252IMG_1265
oh my goodness it was so fun to put together!

the other gifts she got from us or other people in her life included Taylor Swift perfume, clothes, Keds (like taylor Swift wears) diary of a wimpy kid book, two other books and some money.  (someone asked me to post that) sean and annie each made talby a comic – hilarious as always.

just before bedtime and before lauren went back to school and just before the KU game started we attempted a selfie shot in the nearly dark living room.
man…. i sure wish it had been good quality.
this was a great shot.
if only we had had some light. oh well.  we got this. it’s better than nothing.
even spanky made it in the picture.

Jenn - Love it! Especially all the gold gifts! Great idea.

Soon she will be going to college…

Birthdays are a bittersweet moment. We’re glad and we’re sad. A little bit.

God bless your family.

Jennie

On a side note-
I can’t believe Dora the explorer is actually that old!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Calvin is nosing his way through your post. “That’s cool!” “Who is that?” “Are those chocolate coins??!”

I love your family photo and I want a slice of that CAAAAAAKE!

Melissa G. - Meg, you are such a fun Mom!!!! 🙂

Tiffany - Oh Momma, u outdid yourself. What a sweet gift. (I didn’t know 13 was a golden year, did u make that up? ). I hope she loves that her Big Sis made it home for her bday, all of it warms my heart this Friday morning. P.S. I have a suggestion for another book she might like, Wreck this Journal. Maybe for Christmas? it would be great for the two girls to do together. I’m pumped to do it with my 6 year old, but I have a few years yet 🙂 Happy Friday!

Laura - “if only we had some light”……..

TRUST ME my friend…that picture shines a light brighter than you know!!!!
