so we are here.
Category Archives: specialsummer break.
the kids are already telling me "it's too hot to go outside."
we are two days in.
oh my.
we had a full week…in a good way.
full of friends, achievements and good old fashioned hard work.
lauren was promoted from 8th grade.
they had to wear those shirts…lauren was so embarrassed.
we were proud of her for making it through.
jr. high is over.
she made it….it was bitter sweet to watch another milestone pass for her.
four more years is all we get with her.
strange feeling.
wasn't she just born?
wasn't i just feeding her a bottle?
didn't she just learn to walk?
when did this woman appear in our home?
scott had a birthday party.
and he is offically at the stage where birthdays and parties are a bit of a let down.
he had some friends over to go swimming and eat pizza.
but really ALL they did was play basketball.
for hours.
they didn't even come in for rainbow cake!
obsessed.
man….they are cute.
peter from chicago came to visit us.
he travels to kansas for his work and sometimes we get to spend some time with him.
the kids were so happy.
and he brought "specials" for everyone.
(peter…annie has used all her band-aids up already. :)
we took him out for some local yumminess.
this is why we go to breadbasket for ice cream cones instead of dairy queen…
self serve and craig makes them giant!
ahhh….small town.
and there were campfires, gardening, photo sessions, cleaning, weeding, neighborhood parties,
bike rides, crafts, sleepovers, sprinklers and games too.
craig just walked out the door with all the kids for the whole day.
i am in charge of laundry and packing for california.
big job.
can you think of anything that is a MUST HAVE for traveling with your family?
or for surviving an airport with five children?
tell me so i don't forget anything.
thanks!
the suitcases await.
annie's preschool ends tomorrow. so sad.
she will miss all the wonderful creative love and joy that
she gets walking in that door 3 times a week.
even though she hides behind me every single day as we go in…
she can't wait to get there…then she hides and gets shy and nervous.
she participated in half of the 5 songs they sang.
and not the other half.
and that's O-K.
she will miss her teachers.
so much.
but….she gets to come back next year so we will focus on that.
she will probably talk about it everyday…all summer.
these are annie's bff's
micah and lizzie.
glued at the hip…tackle each other in hugs…share their snacks…play together constantly.
after the singing we enjoyed some juice and cookies and playtime at the park.
what a nice way to end the school year.
thanks kristin…this year has been awesome for annie!
september won't come fast enough.
at least for us anyway.
You take the most amazing pictures, really inspiring. seriously the most adorable children! my little brother is 5 (i’m 24..yikes!) and his kindergarten graduation is in two weeks. he keeps insisting that he’s going to stay in kindergarten forever because he loves his teacher and friends so much!
Ooh–and she’s wearing her cute rainbow dress–it’s so perfect for the occasion, right?
Awww….it’s hard to believe it’s the end of the school year already. Your title cracked me up! so I guess home schooling is out. he he.
So cute! I’m looking forward to when my girls have friends. Right now Charlie, my oldest, plays beside other kids, but she doesn’t really interact a whole lot yet when she plays. I think that aspect of their childhood is one of the parts I’m most looking forward to!
My baby girl’s preschool program is tonight. She’s off to kindergarten next year. Sigh.
Hooray! You made it to something! I hope that you had some juice and cookies as a reward. :o) Annie’s school looks like so much fun! The pictures actually make me miss teaching, but after the day I had I guess it’s to be expected! So glad you were able to make this one! I also have a little one who can be very shy at first. Enjoy the summer fun with Annie! I love this dress she wears! And she is so happy to be there–you can see it! Delightful! This is sort of embarrassing — but I decided to sign my daughter up for some summer “preschool” (field trips to the park, movies, that sort of “preschool”). I love my child to the moon and back (and I AM a stay at home mom) — but she loves preschool — and my sanity is worth pulling together a little extra money for a summer session!
as a preschool teacher and mommy, i love your view on children and play. it is rare to find parents that understand the value of a good preschool and a play based curriculum. what a blessing for annie! phew, i was starting to think we neighbor girls were gonna have to do a “program intervention” on you π FYI…8th grade rec is the 20th π i wasn't expecting anything because usually things go better with low expectations…at least for me. craig made an awesome decision to take me, the family and his mother to Sugar Sisters for their first ever brunch buffet. Sugar Sisters is a small locally owned bakery. you must go when you are in wichita…on central near oliver. it is very cute inside…that's what sucked me in…chandeliers, chocolate brown walls and cupcakes. the food was I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E. i don't usually like buffets because they taste like….a buffet. this was so good…like they knew we were coming and made it just for us. we had quiche and waffles and scones and the best hash browns i have ever had. EVER. i made craig go back and get some on his plate…he agreed. the food and coffee were fabulous but the kids were wired. i looked at craig in the middle of the meal and said "this meal would be perfect if the kids weren't here." (just being completely honest) there was crying because we weren't buying giant cupcakes. sean picked up his french toast with his hand & announced "this is disgusting!" lauren gave me the stink eye ALL year day….i wish i had gotten a picture. scott kept saying things like "i can't believe you won't let me do this…it's my birthday!" BUT it was still good. we ate till we were stuffed. we headed home and i got to take a nap. short but sweet. craig made scott's birthday dinner of lasagna while i frosted his cake. the younger three set the table all fancy (definition…we used napkins) we hung a banner…they made chalkboard greetings…we lit candles and played his favorite song. we tried our best to have a good birthday dinner. i am not sure if this was accomplised. but we tried. cake and singing. it was sweet of him to let annie help him blow out his candles. a game of Disney's Scene It before bed…scott's team won. then goodnight. one hour later he comes into the craft room….."mom…how come you didn't give me my present?' "OH NO SCOTT! we just forgot i guess!" duh. again. it was only money but still…we forgot! but so did he. two events i one day is just too much? maybe. (these posts are getting very long recently….i must have a lot on my mind!) Happy Mother’s Day to one of the best mom’s I “know” (blog knowing counts!)! can we get the recipe for the yummy cake? it looks fabulous!
You looked lovely! That place is too darn cute! I want some cupcakes! Stink eye…well it gets better with age-we’re at 18 and I still get it, but only once in a while. Thanks for keeping it real and I recommend you take a much deserved VACATION day! You crack me up. great day meg. even if you did get the stink eye. that cracked me up. ok, i might have cried to if i didn’t get to go home with a giant cupcake.
I love looking at the pictures you take. You are such a wonderful photographer!
That looks like a great place to celebrate Mother’s Day! Just found your blog. It’s awesome! What a sweet boy to forget about his present. Seriously, some kids are so worried about gifts… you have good kids π
What a fabulous bakery. We don’t have things like that here (my theory: girls aren’t supposed to eat in SoFla in public). I told my husband and kids that for Mother’s Day I wanted to go to the beach by myself. My son told me “how about if we all go to the beach but we’ll sit 10 ft from you and not talk to you.” We did go to the beach and my husband took the kids on a long walk…without me. Don’t worry about your post being long, I could read pages from you. It’s very comforting to know that you are just a real mom. We all have memory lapses(as i like to call them) and our kids are not perfect! Thanks for keeping it real and your great photography is a huge bonus!
Great day and a great post. Glad you shared it. And happy bday to your sweet boy too.
This was sooo much fun to read! I don’t think that you could be too wordy but I am a little sad that you didn’t get a picture of the “stink” eye. That one made water shoot out of my nose!
Super cute picture of you. Will recommend this place to a friend in Wichita and will go when we visit!
Lil dives are always the best. I would much rather eat at a ‘mom and pop’ owned restaurant than a chain any day. I love how you kept your day real. Very sweet.
great sweetness batman! i love it…and i want to go tothe fab cupcake place! wooo hoo! annie said:
"mom…this is me.
and my head is HUGE.
i am wearing a green shirt and i am smiling.
and i just drank a whole bunch of water.
sigh…
i just wanted to squeeze her little face.
sometimes you feel something stronger than you can put into words…swelling from deep down.
love
love
love.
my husband is coming home from his man weekend.
my girls are coming back from their grandmother's.
the house will be full again.
it was nice to have the quiet and it will be just as nice to have them back again.
happy sunday.
so sweet. your little annie makes me want to have another little one around here. just for a minute though. i’ll just come down and borrow her for the day. awww!! i love the water on the bottom half of her face π so cute
I always enjoy your blog. Makes me smile every time! Priceless. I love that picture and her explanation of it. Truly adorable and precious! I love it! I have read your blog for awhile, and just wanted to tell you that I truly enjoy it. It makes me feel at peace. π
love this so much!! Your life and your family and your house and your dog–everything just seems so cool! I know having all those kids and a dog can be chaos, but you guys just seem so relaxed, laid back. Its really nice. That says it all, I love Annie’s art so fun and full of COLOR, the best part is that she just drank a bunch of water, thats so cute. Oh, please say that you are going to frame that picture and put the caption underneath! It’s just perfect!
Aren’t kids the cutest! I love her drawing and best of all the description. so sweet…. I LOVELOVELOVE this too! Perfection in tiny little words. You’re daughter is an Einstein. So colorful. what better time for art? annie was waiting the last hour before we left to go see nana.
and it seemed like it was taking forever (for us both).
we'd already played candyland and memory.
she asked "can i paint?"
i answered "sure…why not."
she seemed shocked.
but thrilled.
she said "these are blocks"
and as she put each new color on…the excitement built.
adding the white paint to the colors added a whole new level to her art.
eventually she was shouting.
"LOOK LOOK LOOK!!! PINK!!!"
then a big squeal of delight and a little jumpy dance.
i know how she feels.
That expression is priceless-how wonderful that you, too, know that delight!
oh, fresh paints! that’s the best! I can’t tell you how much I love that your home is beautiful AND Annie is allowed to paint at the coffee table right in front of the couch. Homes that kids aren’t allowed to be kids in really bother me. Congratulations on being a great mom!! Fun! I love her hair, btw. I love moms who will cut their girls’ hair short b/c it contradicts what most expect out of girls, it seems. I have 2 boys and then a 19 month old baby girl….lots to learn…..but I do know now that I love little girls with short hair. I’m sure I will do the same. LOVE what that one mom commented…carpe diem for real! Beautiful! Calvin always just mixes all of the colors together until he gets brown. π Love that you share something so special with her.
Yes I know know how she feels too!!! OK…she has A LOT of paint on that papaer and her clothes look CLEEEEEAN!!!! HOW??? Love that you let her do that right before leaving I just cant figure how she stayed clean for grandma? lolol LOOOOOVE it!! thats a big water color pallet! where did you get it? we only have the single row one s she definately has her mama’s creativity gene. so cute.
Oh, she has the expression of my preschoolers when they mix a new color! I love it! Looks like a fun day. Join my challenge if you want π she is something special. she received The Sustainer Award from the Junior League.
my parents, craig, annie & i went to a lovely luncheon where they surprised her with the award.
she didn't know we were there.
it was quite sneaky.
to present the award a Fairy Tale Princess appeared.
(bonnie bing of the wichita eagle)
she read a silly poem full of details about my grandmother and it ended with her name.
it was creative, witty and light hearted.
she was so surprised.
they brought her to the front of the room…
she turned and saw all of us there with her friends and was even more surprised.
she looked right at my mom and said "are you going to stay…i need you to fix my skype"
everyone got a kick out of that.
my grandmother is 91 and she reads this blog…she emails…and SHE SKYPES!
she is the coolest grandma in the world.
they told stories of her service all these many many years in the junior league,
thousands of hours and decades with the wichita children's home
and raising five children.
she is amazing.
this is her telling the group "i really don't deserve this…."
and she meant it.
always so humble.
she has been a beautiful example of grace and class my entire life.
the two princesses.
grandma…you looked so pretty in your pink suit!
annie was being shy most of the day.
which is better than being loud and crazy.
even the princess couldn't get her to talk.
her friends watched her open her gift…gave her hugs and congratulated her.
it was so fun to see her get all that attention.
and to see how she is respected and loved by so many.
afterwards we went back to her house and my mom fixed her skype.
π
i love you grandma.
everyone loves my grandmother.
if you met her…you'd love her too.
she IS something special.
I found your blog today on my “blog Stroll” I love the picture of the fairy tale princess. Wouldn’t if be fun if we could just play dress up sometimes? I would like to use this picture in a post on my blog. I didn’t want to be a Creepy and post it without an okay from you… What do you say? OKAY? Love it- and love that princess outfit She is precious. I laughed outloud at the Skype comment.
AWESOME grandma! She is also beautiful – and does not look 91. Love her pink suit, too. Your Grandma ROCKS!
What a hoot. Love that grandmas aren’t afraid of the internet! My grandma is 82 and is on facebook π
WOW!!! Your Grandmother is GORGEOUS and you look just like her!!! Such a cute post π xo Well Waffle brought my 1st comment to you last week, but I am a sucker for sweet grandma’s, and next to mine, yours takes the cake:). Thanks for sharing her with us. Give her a big hug from a girl in Texas! Brought tears to my eyes….
What a special special lady it sounds like your grandmother is!!! My grandmother passed away 4 yrs ago and I miss her dearly…so lucky to have your sweet grandmother around. What a great post Meg!!!! Congrats to your beautiful gracious grandmother π What a beautiful woman! How blessed you are! What a beautiful woman. You are very fortunate to have her in your life. She reminds me of my mother who is 85 and can run circles around me!! Cherish her! You have one hip grandma! Mine is 92 and I don’t think she’s ever touched a computer. After reading about your grandmother, all I can say is that ‘the apple didn’t fall far from the tree’. She sounds a lot like you! Grandparents are so special!!!! Grandma seems like a pretty amazing lady. I love hearing about grandparents that are on the computer and doing things most people their age are not.. so lively! Thanks for sharing your Grandmother with us! She is special!Mine are all gone now and I miss them dearly! Oh Meg! You are so blessed to even still have a grandma…and one as awesome as that! And how cool that your kids get to know her! Although, like most kids, they won’t know it’s cool until she’s gone and they’re older. That’s just life. What a wonderful tribute to your Grandma! I already love her. She’s so pretty in pink, indeed! And such a great example of the best way to live a fulfilling life – by giving of one’s self. She does not look like she is 91!!! Congrats to her. How wonderful of you all to surprise her. Glad she got her Skype fixed π Congratulations to your grandmother. I am certain she does deserve all the love and recognition! She is a beautiful lady, too! Girl – you have good genes!!
Hot pink and fabulous ladies – what a perfect post! Congrats to your grandma, what a special lady. What a wonderful party and tribute! How fun. π How fabulous! Reading about your grandmother reminds me so much of mine (she is 88) aren’t we lucky to have such special ladies in our lives? I bet it meant as much to all of you to celebrate her as anything – love it!! π how cute is she?? she skypes? that’s awesome. no way she is 91! Oh, this made me miss my Mam-ma. She never got to Skype, but was cool as well. And your grandma is gorgeous! I love her pink suit. Congratulations, Meg’s grandma!!
What a special lady! I got really emotional reading this and it makes me miss my grandmother so much.
amazing. what a tribute! that brought tears to my eyes. my grandma is so special to me. she’s fun, a typical southern belle and has taught me so much about what really matters. i hope i can be like her when i grow up. :0)
Oh I love that- congratulations to your grandmother, and good for you all to be there to watch! My husband’s grandmother is 90 and still emails daily! I think it helps keep them young when they can keep up with all of us. i love her pink suit!!sooo pretty!! Oh, I just loved this post. It is beautiful. I have a heart for the elderly, and when I go back for my masters (someday?), I’ll study Gerontology. I’m thrilled you’re enjoying your Grandma-how blessed you all are to have one another.
What a special Grandmother! You are VERY lucky! My Gradmother was a wonderful person also. She had a brain aneurysm when she was 52! Way too young! That was such a sweet post! She’s stunning. She literally is beaming. You are so blessed, Meg. Aw, this made me cry. Your grandma is such a special lady. It makes me miss my grandma, she was a special lady too. What a wonderful legacy to be a part of. Thanks for sharing a wonderful moment. She does sound like the coolest grandmother! I love cool grandmothers! Mine was wonderful too. That makes me want to cry, I miss my Grandmother, she lives in another country and too is a very special lady. Lovely post π
talby got to be a flower girl in craig's cousin's wedding.
she was nervous and excited and happy all at the same time.
there was only a tiny bit of whispering and giggling.
(check out those bouquets…gorgeous!)
she wore her dress and tiara to church the next day too.
thank you Mr & Mrs Duerksen for asking our little talby.
she felt like a princess.
how sweet. she looks beautiful. she will never forget that. i bet she wants to wear the dress this sunday too. i would, it’s adorable. have a great Easter. Oh so sweet! My daughter was a “flower girl” in my sister’s wedding…at 1 1/2…yeah, not so much. She looks at pictures and can’t believe it’s her. NO memory. This is great, Talby will so remember this forever π Okay, I know it sounds a little stalker-ish, but I have checked your blog THREE times today to see if you posted. I should get a hobby!
What a beautiful wedding- and it looks like the flower girl did a lovely job! Awww, she looks so sweet and inocent. The color of the dresses and her sash are yummy. Every girl likes to practice putting on her princess. Glad Talby had the chance too. My advice…let her WEAR THAT DRESS OUT! How sweet. Weddings are so FuN!
So cute! What a beautiful wedding. Love that you got a photo catching them whispering!
How cute is she!?!?
so pretty! i loved being a flower girl when I was about her age. Happy Easter! Kelly Lovely. She looks simply precious! Do you know where the bridesmaids got their shoes? ADORABLE! (so is talby :)) Fun! I like how in the kissing picture she looks uninterested!! That’s good! hehe!

Ali - Kim Smith – So cute! I LOVE the hugging one! I bet their Mom loved that one! And the one of the litlte girl sliding down the slide is precious! Great captures!
Ozan - Katherine Huff – Your children are aultsboely gorgeous, Arianna’s hair is getting so long and Easton looks adorable with his missing teeth. Michael lost his but watch out girl you are going to have to do a lot of editing to help him out this summer. You definitely have to do the bubble pics with my kids I love them. Yeah your coming home soon! Can’t wait and wait until you see what Brandi and I have in store for you. hehe
Gagan - TOO STINKING CUTE!!!! What cute kids and just a beautiful faimly altogether. One of your BEST faimly shoots ever!! Love the Little Princess .
sara - congratulations to the graduate! hope you have a great trip!
pam - PS: i love the pictures. lauren is beautiful. scott is TOUGH and cool. your kids are having an awesome childhood. miss you!
pam - Dramamine. seriously, you never know when one of them will puke. and it makes them sleepy. π i found orange chewable ones in the airport gift shop but that’s the only place i’ve ever seen them. they were yummmy too.
have a super trip!
Lisa - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL SUPPLY OF LITTLE BLUE PILLS. YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO RUN OUT.
OH YEAH, THATS RIGHT. THATS ME. OOOOOPS. HAVE FUN ANYWAY.
HUGS FROM MAINE
chasity - love the ice cream on the elbow!
we always travel with twizzlers…a traveling necessity.
Jennifer P. - as many electronic gadgets as you can shove in there. And Lollipops. They got my kids through our airplane ride.
Congrats to Lauren! And enjoy your alone day!
Shar - The above all have good suggestions but don’t forget to check the guidelines of what you can take aboard the plane and sizes of liquids, etc. Would be a shame to have to throw out surprises because they don’t pass muster. Believe me, I have learned the hard and expensive way!
Anna - For the airport… leashes!
I agree with a change of clothes for all… just incase. Maybe some Sudoku/Activity books.
Enjoy the summer. What I wouldn’t give to be at home everyday with my little one, instead of being in the office.
Traci - i always bought the kids a new magazine and gave it to them on the plane. actually i still do this and now that they are young adults the magazines are interesting to roger and i too and we get them for the ride home. hope you got all your stuff done.
Michelle - Any QUIET activity, a change of clothes in your carry-on for everyone, and good snacks are a must for our family. Annie isn’t super young, but I highly recommend an umbrella stroller anyway. You can gate check them and it saves you from listening to whining if you have a huge airport to get through or worse a close connection where you have to run for your next plane. Not to mention the fact that it isn’t easy to wander when you’re strapped into a stroller.
Dawn W. - DVD player, Ipods, and gum. Enjoy Lauren while she is still at home. The time will FLY!!! My oldest graduates this week and it seems like just the other day she was a freshman in high school. Now we will be packing her stuff and she will be going to college in the fall. I don’t know where the time has gone.
Have a great trip!
Dawn
Whitni - Just finished up my first semester of college, meaning I graduated from high school last year, and if there is ONE THING I could tell anyone getting ready to begin high school is: Don’t take it all so seriously. It doesn’t matter if you’re the coolest, or the prettiest, or the smartest, or if you have the coolest, cutest or smartest boyfriend. All that matters is that you be yourself and stand up for yourself. Don’t let anyone put you down. High school doesn’t last forever. OH, and if she doesn’t believe any of that. Tell her she just has to make it to college, college is amazing. Sorry for the long comment, have a nice trip!
Starnes Fam - Looks like fun! We are headed to Cali this summer, too, but driving cross country like the Griswolds. We’re a bit obsessed with that fictional family. So, I’m tempted to quote Vacation, but will hold back! Enjoy!
Kameron - DVD player. Enough said. :o)
Alison - Go buy a few, small, new toys/books/markers…and snacks. One thing for each of them, hide them in your bag until you take off in the airplane. Wait for a bit and see if the settle in, then break out the goods. Take snacks too, those itty bags of peanuts aren’t worth a darn. In the end, let them take turns going to the bathroom, that is always a thriller and time killer. Enjoy your time!
Sarah - Pipecleaners! Kept my three busy crafting and then pretending with their little creations….have a great trip and love your blog! π
Ashley Ann - Your words about Lauren were just perfect tonight…put a lot in perspective after what has been 5 very long days!
Sandy - I’m still trying to figure out what Lauren found so embarrassing about the shirts they wore at graduation. Is there something on it that my monitor isn’t picking up? I don’t see anything odd about any of the kids shirts. But, I also understand that it could very well be that the shirt is embarrassingly ugly and a teenager would never wear it unless forced to do so. π I think she looks beautiful! Is she still playing volleyball? I miss my daughter playing volleyball (she’s in college now and doesn’t play anymore).
Sandy - Snacks. When is your trip?
patricia - I always like to pack things for laughs – a wig, funny glasses or something they all want.
A jump rope….cards, a whoopie cushion – and a ther-mom-eter!
Do not forget that camera of yours…. show us the funnies….
pve
Meredith - We’ve got six children and I’ve always thought as long as you have an enormous pair of sunglasses to hide behind and a favourite lipstick that makes you feel fab, you can cope with anything. Baby wipes are good too.:-) Hope you have a great time.
nicole milkie - HI THere, if you can, I would fit a set of daily essentials in your carry-on in case your bags get lost. I couldnt live without a fresh pair of undergarments and my face powder…just a suggestion
Pattie - I like the idea of benadryl too; works like a charm. Seriously, just wanted to tell you congrats on Lauren getting through middle school. The next four years will fly by. My middle one just graduated from high school this past weekend. Next year my baby will graduate from high school and my daughter will graduate from college. It goes so, so fast. I love how you will have this blog to look back on in the future.
Have a great time on your trip!
Julia - Have you taken the kids to see Night at the Museum 2? Even the 14 year old liked it.
Kate - We are a well traveled family of 7 (hooray for five kids!) and my advice to you would be keep it simple. I am queen of “we might need this” and forever this has turned out bad for me. Something will lose a piece, a noisy handheld game is irritating…they never feel like doing the stuff we pile up beforehand. The simple stuff works best…a small notebook and pencil, deck of cards, a treat that won’t get melty. The older kids bring their stuff (ipods, etc). It never fails that they buy gotta-have-it-stuff during the trip. Less is more, eh? But you probably know all this junk already–I have been reading your blog for a few months–you’re so inspiring! And your photos are stunning.
Marla @ Stolen Bon Bons - Mine have 7.5 days left of school and then they will be out for summer break. And my little over 7 hours of peace Monday – Friday will come to an end.
When we travel with our 5 I make each of them their own travel bag full of “stuff” to keep them busy. Crayons, coloring books, paper, pens, reading books, travel size games, and a few snacks.
I also wanted to stop by and let you know I have a recall notice on my blog for the senseo coffee maker. For some reason I am thinking you also received one during their their free coffee pot promotion.
princesslasertron - ummm children’s benadryl?
probably not the most responsible choice π
when we were little, we traveled a lot. my brother and I each have a backpack that my mom would fill up for us and give to us when we got on the plane. it was so magical opening the bag to see what she got us. there was always some really fun gum from the candy junk in the checkout aisle, something artistic for me to do like a little package of clay or floam (some nickelodeon product), and matt liked something soft to play with. Sometimes she’d give us a cd or a tape to listen to. Snacks. That was the best.
Kathy - Valium for you for sure and lots of treats!
CherryTreeLane - I learned (very quickly) this weekend, to bring a change of clothes for everyone. You never know when you will need it. A towel and extra water. And change. And a cell phone charger.
Wendy - Hi, I’m new to your blog (well, been lurking for about 6mo or so now). My husband is an airline pilot so we do a lot of flying in the summer with the kids (I have 4). I agree with the posts so far. We do personalized treat bags (containing gum, starbursts, chewy stuff and lollypops) for each child with their name on it, portable dvd player, ipods for the older ones (ours are 17,15,10 and 8). When they were younger we enjoyed pre-boarding if any of the kids were under 5. Doesn’t hurt to ask. I’m not sure what airline you’re taking but I know my husbands has activity books for the kids and sometimes if you ask the FA, they’ll let the kids get up and help hand out pretzels and such (seat belt sign not illuminated of course). And the pilots like to see the kids. My husband has fun showing the wide eyed kids all of the stuff that is in the cockpit and it helps the kids with any anxiety if they meet the pilot I think. π Good luck and enjoy your trip.
Amanda F - Lots of snacks (juice boxes and fruit snacks are a special travel snack in our house), mini-notepads with pencils taped to them, activity books, Magna Doodle, CASH… and for that moment when the entire plan is looking like they want to smother your loud but oh, so lovely children… the portable DVD player with headphones.
Good luck! Adore your blog!!
Melanie - Where are yall going in California? It is my favorite place. It is beautiful.
Julia - My 3 year old wants an iPod – crazy – for plane trips, I have found that LOTS of FOOD is the ticket. Everybody’s favorites. The 3 yr old used her own money to buy a Disney Princess book at Barnes and Noble about 3 weeks ago – she’s still obsessed with it – so maybe something like that for your 4 yr old.
rachel - Wow I’m in scotland and our kids aren’t off until end of June – thank god! Its a rare occasion here when “its too hot to got outside” and thats in the summer ha! p.s love your blog
Patti - pack a surprise for for each kid that you give them on the plane….something fun and small for california. like sunglasses for the girls and maybe some sort of little water/beach toy for the boys. it takes their mind off the long flight and it’s a nice surprise. π don’t forget to pack lots of snacks! the weather is gorgeous in california right now. i’m taking a break from my gardening to write this. have a great time!
