scott’s big week

we have had a BIG week over here.
all scotty focused.
he had his 18th birthday.   🙂
FullSizeRender (9)
he signed to play basketball next fall at Tabor College.
we are super excited for him!
i think it’s going to be a GREAT fit for him.
IMG_5908IMG_5971IMG_5995
AND HE GRADUATED from high school!!!
it was such a fun day!
the ceremony was short and sweet… and then it was time to party.
IMG_6109
his grandparents were pretty proud of him.
IMG_6108
FullSizeRender (8)
annie made a sign so everyone would know to go to the back yard.
and we hung his banner from the gym on the window.
ha ha ha!
we did lots and LOTS of yard work last week.
and i am so glad because now it’s ALL DONE and we get to enjoy it all summer!
IMG_5997
lots of the grad parties had cute photo displays and slide shows playing.
well… i forgot about all that stuff.
but i did put out his two photo albums and took two pictures off the wall.
i guess i will be more prepared for the next kid’s graduation party.
IMG_5998
but i DID get all my pots planted!    🙂
planting flowers is one of the best parts of spring.
i did forget to take pictures after we brought out the food.
bummer.
we served pulled pork, baked beans, cheesey potatoes, watermelon, veggies and my mom made a million deviled eggs!
i didn’t get any of it… but i heard it was yummy.
HA.
also… next grad party we now know to make even more food.

(think how amazing annie’s party will be after so much practice?!)
IMG_5962
i asked my mom to find me an antique wash basin or some kind of neat cooler to hold the ice cream at the party.
she totally rocked that mission!
and then… i didn’t get a picture of the ice cream in it!
you can kind of see it in this photo.
it was perfect!
IMG_6007
craig made three different kinds of homemade ice cream!
he loves his White Mountain Ice Cream Maker.
and so does everyone that gets to eat the ice cream!

IMG_5996FullSizeRender
all the plant containers are vintage.
the polka dot cushions are/were from target.com last year.
the orange rug is from world market.
the yellow D is from Michaels.

IMG_6015
scott had lots of family come to celebrate with him.
lots of his friends stopped by and so many special adults in his life.
it was really cool to see so many people that care about Scott or our family all in one place?!
literally – hashtag blessed.IMG_6008IMG_6006IMG_6005FullSizeRender (2)
the weather was a little chilly but no rain and no wind!
woo-hoo!
we were able to leave the door to the house wide open so people could just go in and out… LOVED THAT.

we had the best time!
i love having parties.
i love having a deadline to get a whole bunch of stuff done before the party.
but i really loved watching my son welcome everyone to his party and tell them thank you for coming and talk with each one.
that made my heart so happy!

it’s crazy to think that i have another child that is through with high school.
how does time go so quickly?
HOW!?

Brooke Whitis - Literally…hashtag blessed (made me laugh), but this is so fun! And how are all your kids graduating high school… it’s crazy! I feel like I was reading your blog and they were all so small (ish). Geez.

Megan - I just adore your photos of the flowers and containers. I have a few old containers like yours and definitely want more, especially after seeing them together. You have such a great eye for details!

Mindy - Congratulations to you son on his graduation and his college signing! You have many more bleacher sitting ahead of you : ) Your plantings are just the cutest as is that score your Mom found for the ice cream – homemade even – wow!

Kasey - Your patio and plants are lovely!

jennibell - Wow!!! I have 4 kids graduating in the next 5 years and am thinking that it is time to start getting ready! Thanks for the heads’ up on the slideshow. . .I can start that this summer and then just add his senior moments to that. Your yard is beautiful — stunning. Any chance you could walk us through it one day? I’d love to be able to container plant like that — yours always looks so fresh and lush and full. . .mine never do. And how do you take care of them all summer — I’ve seen in the past that they always look great.
Have a relaxing summer — congrats on the basketball. . .know your family will enjoy watching him play next year!

Chris - Your flowers are beautiful!!! Quick question about your pos! Do you plant directly in them or in pots in the bigger pots!!! Congratulations to Scott!!

jamie - i love everything about this post. drenched in beauty and happy. can you share craig’s favorite ice cream recipes soon? maybe we should invest in that ice cream maker. and is that scott’s entire graduating class in the photo? if it is WOW i love how small it is! we have huge graduating classes at our school {400+} so it’s fun to see a small group of kids!

Jessica - Congrats to your son! You must be incredibly proud!!
Totally random question… I see you have outdoor lights hanging and am dying to do the same but WHERE do you have them plugged in? :/

Kathi - Congrats to all of you! The graduating class is SO TINY! That must be wonderful. My youngest has one more year of college, I’m not sure how that happened so fast either! Love your blog, thank you for sharing. Your posts and IG always inspires me.

Jennifer Carlisle - Your planters are absolutely beautiful. The colors and designs made me happy!

barb c - Congrats on your grad! Your patio is MAGICAL!

Kimberlee Jost - Annie’s sign still makes me laugh.
Such a good time and such GREAT ice cream!

Linda - Thank you for being so honest. The party looked amazing and perfect as does everything you do. But it is sometimes nice to hear that there was more you wanted to do, that it didn’t get done and that its ok. I am really struggling with that now. Thanks for the inspiration as always.

Lynn - I always have the opposite problem-WAY too much food and then we eat leftovers for a week!

KWolff - Congratulations to you son! That is exciting about him getting to play post HS basketball. Your party looked great.
My oldest is going to be starting his senior year in the fall and I have already put my hubby on notice that our backyard needs to be ready. 🙂

Amy Woods - Wow! Y’all’s school ends early up in Kansas! My one and only graduates on June 4! EEEEP! I thought I’d be more sad…but I’m too busy being excited for him and his upcoming college career. It helps that he will be going to school only 45 mins away from home. And although he will be living on campus, I work at the same university he will be attending so I might even see him more than I do now! (hehehe…I need a giggling emoji!)
I told him I expect him to bring me lunch and to run and get me sonic drinks during happy hour. He says – you do know I’m going to be taking actual classes, right? Whatever.

Love your yard and flowers and the party looked lovely and fun!!

Tiffany - Congratulations to your family and your son!

so if you weren’t sure what i have been doing… it’s still basketball season.
🙂
but it’s coming to an end in the next few weeks.
and honestly that breaks my heart.
i can’t imagine not watching my Scotty play on that court with his classmates.
i can’t not cry when i think of this stage ending.
it is going to be really hard to be done.
sigh.

annie’s team finished up their season recently.
they are so fun to watch and even to listen to in-between games.

IMG_1617IMG_1646IMG_1935

Valentines Day was actually really nice this year!
i got to assist Scott in making his gifts for his girlfriend.
he did all the work but i gave some advice as he worked.

IMG_2100IMG_2106IMG_2138
it was a valentine’s success!

talby and annie got these funny Cat Face Pillows  for Valentines from me.
they loved them!
i absolutely recommend them if you know someone that likes cats.
they are silly but also really fun.
and they have Dog Face Pillows too!

HaPpY BiRthDaY!!!

beth larson - Morning Meg! Just have to say that your Lauren was the cutest little girl! So fun to see some of your favorite photos of her. Have a great day!

Andrea G. - Good stuff! Basketball season…helps get us all through long winters! 🙂

Lisa - Praying for your community. Can’t imagine having something like that hit so close to home. ❤️

Suzanne - Hoping all is well for you in Hesston after hearing about the shootings at Excel. Praying for Hesston.

tracy fisher - love love love reading your blog. hugs, tracy fisher (remember me? the girl with the beach house in Washington.. haha).

Tracy - My oldest just turned 20 so 21 is right around the corner…so hard to believe!

Has Scott decided where he will go to school next year? My senior boy is going to be a Jayhawk <3 So happy to have a Jayhawk because my oldest went to Mizzou! (I am a KU Jayhawk…cam you tell? Haha!)

Kathi - My baby turned 21 in December, I helped him make paper roses for his valentine. It’s bittersweet watching my boys grow up. It was good family time going to all the soccer games, track meets, and cross country meets, I still miss those times. I spy your barn door, I would love to see what you did with it:)

first order of business – the WINNER OF THE 31BITS NECKLACES!
IMG_2356
winner:   “Kristina – Love it all. Especially Persimmon bracelet!”

Kristina… i need you to email me your address so i can send you these beauties.
my email is in the sidebar under my (very outdated) profile photo.

🙂

SUPERskinnysideways
and now… back to the regularly scheduled programming.

last summer talby and annie started on their first quilts.
quilts take a lot of time and after we made what felt like a million strips… we lost steam.
IMG_7768(pp_w775_h775)
(but look how cute and little the girls are in these pics from last summer!)IMG_7791(pp_w775_h775)IMG_7744(pp_w775_h775)
SUPERskinnysideways
so now… a year later…. TALBY FINISHED the front of her quilt!!!

IMG_2172IMG_2190IMG_2197IMG_2198IMG_2199
i mean… have you ever seen anything cuter?!
all the colors!!!
it’s just plain dreamy.

are far as HOW we are making this quilt… we are making it up as we go along.
it won’t be perfect but we don’t really care about that.
🙂
we care about learning to love sewing.

we use the SINGER Heavy Duty Sewing Machine for all of our sewing projects.
and we use these at the Craft House too.

81Maa6mLwUL._SL1500_
the girls can thread it themselves.
it sews very smoothly and it is EASY to use!
i highly recommend this machine!
it’s $136 on Amazon with Prime Shipping.

i think that is a total score!

IMG_2194
as soon as Talby finished Annie asked “Can i sew today Mom?”

i am so happy they like sewing!!!

we are still deciding on what to put on the back and how we will “quilt” it.

SUPERskinnysideways

ALSO… if you are looking for great books to encourage your girls to sew or just to inspire them… i highly recommend these two books!
IMG_2798

We Love to Sew: 28 Pretty Things to Make: Jewelry, Headbands, Softies, T-shirts, Pillows, Bags & More
and  We Love to SewBedrooms: 23 Projects Cool Stuff for Your Space

We have both of these books and they are REALLY good.
they are written for the kids – really great photography, styling and projects.
it’s written so they feel like it’s THEIR book… not their mom’s book.

and when i went just to find the links for those two books i saw she has TWO more books!
i immediately ordered them both because DUH!
Annabell Wrigley is a rockstar.

We Love to SewGifts: Fun Stuff for Kids to Stitch and Share

We Love to CraftChristmas: Fun Stuff for Kids 17 Handmade Fabric & Paper Projects

02da98ac7daa39e66ea2a74f343b5b5e

my mail box is going to be so happy this week!

i am making curtains for a bedroom at the Craft House… the fabric is a bright yellow damask!
swoony.
are you making anything right now? sewing or not sewing?

let’s hear it!

Loto - I love that you are teaching your girls to sew! Talby’s quilt is beautiful!

Southern Gal - I’m sewing curtains and a seat cushion for my daughter-in-law’s kindergarten class room. Next are clothes for my grandchildren and a quilt for my son. I love the scrap quilt. She did an amazing job!

Maria - So so cute! Guess I need to stop pinning quilts and just make one already!

Alicia - That is adorable! So happy! My daughter and I just started on a duvet for her bed. The husband and other kids are going out of town tomorrow and leaving us to makeover her very first room to herself. I think I’m as excited as she is!

Sue - Sewing. Always sewing. I make comforters for relief work around the world, for domestic violence victims, for people who lost belongings due to natural disasters, always to give away for a variety of causes. Talby’s comforter is amazing! She’s got a good eye for bright and fun!

I knot my comforters using something called the Decatur knot. It leaves an X on the top, and one stitch showing on the back. I enjoy that process more than struggling with a bed-size comforter through my sewing machine!

Erica - With my older kids I thought a shopping cart cover was a waste of time and money, but my youngest puts her mouth allover everything so I whipped up one out of fleece. Now she’s standing up in her crib and so I’m making a crib rail cover

Kathi - I’m going to order these for myself. I took sewing in Jr.High School a million years ago, and haven’t done much on a sewing machine since. I think these books would be just my speed 😀

KWolff - I love the colors of Talby’s quilt. It is very fun and looks like something that will be well loved for years to come. Thanks for the tips on the books. I have a daughter (14) that loves to sew but she gets so discouraged when things don’t work out right. I think one/some/all of these books would be good motivators for her to get back into the swing of sewing and actually have fun with it.

Jen J - Right now I am working on making a purse for my friend and I also have an order for a checkbook cover. I plan to work on making that today 🙂

My daughter recently learned to sew. She is taking a quilting class right now from a lady that goes to our church. I get to tag along to the classes and I have learned so much! I have never wanted to quilt before, but I do now 🙂

jen - Her quilt is awesome! I’m working on a quilt as well. Finally cut in to a bundle of Joel Dewberry fabric I bought about 5 years ago.

Lisa Perry - I am re-doing my little Jack and Jill bathroom…I aways buy two shower curtains and turn one into a sink skirt and curtains to match the actual shower curtain. Going with blues and greens and attempting painted stripes on the walls.

Julie - When I’m not working, gardening, cooking or reading, sewing is what I do. Currently I am making a scrappy sampler quilt – no real plan as yet, Here is a progress shot of the blocks I’ve made so far. Fingers crossed that when it is finished it looks as good in real life as it does in my head.

http://justjulielou.blogspot.co.nz/2015/07/wednesday-wip.html

Very impressed you are making more curtains – I have never attempted those.

phyllis - I love her quilt top!!!
Want! 😀
I am about to try Shibori… tie dye in indigo …probably on pillowcases to start since I snagged some at Goodwill.

Becky Kindel - I sewed fabric bunting and paper bunting for the kitchen and craft room in the new craft retreat I’m building!

KirstenP - I got the Singer Sewing Machine you mentioned for my birthday. I’ve been checking out quilting pages on facebook for pattern ideas and how-tos to make my very first quilt. I found a pattern I like and I’m tweaking it with a couple of my own design and fabric ideas.
On facebook’s Quilting Club page I saw this awesome quilt that reminded me of your love of color. It’s too difficult for me now but someday I plan to make it. http://www.craftsy.com/supplies/riley-blake-basic-variety-star-bright-quilt/14787?ext=FB_QC_PP_Ecomm_Activity_Ecomm_Purchase_14787_20150810_1400&utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social%20Engagement&utm_campaign=Quilting%20Club-Ecomm%20Activity&initialPage=true

Amy Woods - What a beautiful, happy, lovely quilt! Absolutely perfectly imperfect. I love it!

I am currently crocheting a little beach bag that I started before our trip to the beach earlier this summer and didn’t finish. 😉

And, I’m working on a rag t-shirt quilt for a friend. It’s kinda giving me hives because I am now at the sewing stage, and sewing on t-shirts is making me nervous. I’m just going to have to jump right in!

Love that you sew with your girls.

Jackie O M - Just back from a week at Club Fred ~ spent with our grandpetites.
We had great fun doing projects. Petit #1 made a request to knit a new scarf (she began knitting at Granny Camp several years back). For this scarf, we both had to learn the seed stitch ~ not at all difficult. Petit # 2, the Vegetarian, wanted to make noodles by hand. And pesto. And Caesar salad ~ which she did at table;awesome. Petit #3 wove a small pillow on a cardboard loom, round and round as opposed to back and forth, no seams. He also learned a four strand round cord to use as a handle. On our field trip to Shipshewana, we scored knitting looms. Petites #2 & #3 along with granny are loom knitting! And paper banners!

GB Jost - Our Girl will be sewing her first apron!

Jody - LOVE the quilt!!!!

Books to inspire girls AND boys!!!! Boys love to sew too. :))

kim - After making lots and lots of headbands for my little girl, I’ve taken the ever so slightly more complicated step to…pillowcase dresses 🙂 Slowly, but surely, making my way into a hobby of imperfect sewing! Love your blog!

Nikki - I’m crocheting a shawl right now, but looking at Talby’s quilt is making me so happy I think I will go home and start cutting up my old stash of fabric to make one for myself!

for our last night with my nieces we had a late night slumber party at the Craft House.
the little girls were shocked when i agreed to a SECOND movie at 10:30 pm!
i said “well this IS a slumber party!”
i painted while they watched.
🙂

IMG_3171
they played SORRY while i made gluten free pumpkin muffins.
to which we all agreed that they were a fail… they tasted like eating a plain sweet potato.
not what we wanted from our pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.
bummer.
at least we had other things to eat!

then we drove them home after our 5 days together…. such a great visit!

i am hoping to work on the paint project tomorrow and all weekend.
Hope Spoken is in a week… not freaking out but yet… totally freaking out.
i am excited about everything!
just nervous about my speaking – and i do not even know what i am going to say yet!
soon… soon… soon.   i can feel it coming together and swirling around in my head.
(thank you jesus!)
but just know that i will cry… if i stood up and gave the weather report i would STILL cry.
it’s just what i do.
i cry.

lastly… there is still ONE apron left in the shop.
i love her so much.
i can’t believe she’s left all  by herself… she’s the life of the party for sure.
beverly
maybe she appears too wild in photos?
she is royal blue, spring green and a beautiful bright pink… seriously such a great combo!
the turquoise and the lime green in the floral pattern are perfection!

have a super weekend!
i am DYING to finish my paint project to show the world because you are going to freak!!
it’s completely dreamy and rad.
🙂

must go to sleep now… it’s 12:53…yikes!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Best way to start my day, right here. That bball shot of Talby (?) is so awesome! And I’m going to do snack dinner soon.

Andrea - Meg…I just love seeing peeks into your colorful world…..and your dogs just crack me up! Happy Spring!

Heather - Random thoughts that I can’t post on Facebook because I’m taking a break;

you prompted me to buy tulips yesterday, on the first day of spring

I read 7 last week while on holiday in Cuba and now I’m off FB and a moms board that I’ve been on for 12 years that consistently annoys me. LOL I am now reading A million miles in a thousand years, which you had recommended to me.

s - Totally random but what kind of curling wand is that and does it work as well as it looks like it does???!!

sharon / theprincipledtype.blogspot.com - i believe tulips go with Everything! (that’s my story and I’m sticking with it:))

Amy Woods - Lovely. All.

Stephanie - I LOVE that apron. It was that one, the Ruby, and a couple others that I picked out as my favorites. So if she looks too wild, I guess that’s my taste! Lol.

Kerry - Have you read “Anything” By Jennie Allen? I have it on hold at the library now.

Lynette L. - I love posts like this! You take the best pictures! Your dogs pose so well – mine is always moving so she is just a blur in the pictures I take.

Katherine @ Grass Stains - Meg, when I saw this idea, I knew I had to send it to you. It is SO YOU! I can see you doing this with your girls. 🙂

http://thehousethatlarsbuilt.com/2015/03/diy-painted-shoes-for-st-patricks-day.html/

beth larson - so….did Annie get the duck? So adorbs- and I can’t wait to see your painting project- this was a great post!! xo

ira lee - looks like a ton of fun and if you could just call me before the next week like this, that’d be great!! lol

cheesecake, africa and you

BLOGstripRNBW1000

i have a friend named Pam.

i have talked about her a lot over the years on this little space.
she took me all the way to africa for a week and changed my life.
then she sold everything she owned…car, furniture…everything.
and then she moved there with her family!

6a00d8341c469c53ef01310f9e88a6970c-640wi
(pam….how do we have NO photos of just the two of us??)

(and boy do we look…HOT.   literally.  very sweaty)

her family has been back in the states again this past few months and are almost ready to return to Liberia.
selfishly… i want her to stay.
i want to have her around for long lunches and late night talks. (very late)
i want to spend time with her.   i want to learn about faith and life from her.
i want to hear that laugh! (she has a fabulously loud, awesome laugh!)
but as much as i want that for me… i know it’s wrong.
she and her family have been called to go and share the gospel in Liberia.
and that is so obviously right.
they are meant to be there!  it is THE PERFECT fit for them.
their hearts are alive for africa.
when you talk with them for five minutes you already know that they have servant hearts for africa.

IMG_8056

God has called them and they are going.

this was part of their newsletter:

“We have a Clear Call to work with the people in Liberia. We will soon be returning to Liberia and make the big move to the interior of Liberia. God has broken our hearts for the people there – more than 98% of them are without the Gospel and with little chance of ever hearing of our Savior’s love. We are excited about God opening doors for us to work in Liberia. We have much to learn in the coming months and years, but our goal is to obey the Holy Spirit and love the people around us.”

Pam is an amazing cook.
i mean….she is absolutely A M A Z I N G!!

a few years ago she was sweet to me and let me share her cheesecake recipe on my blog.
she didn’t have to do that.
that was probably a pretty hard thing to do actually… she CREATED the recipe over several years!
it took her a long time to figure out all the perfect ingredients to make it just right.
and oh. my. goodness…. did she ever get it just right?!!  YES!

Lisa - What a great idea to help raise money!!!

Tiffany - I’ve made it a few times now… For Thanksgiving and Easter. It is hands down, THE BEST! I want to propose to our craft weekend group that we need to do a virtual reunion through IG. That would be a good reason to make it again!

Skim - What an amazing family! Being on the other side of the world in Aus, how many ounces is in a packet of cream cheese in the US? Would love to make this cheesecake.

Terrie - You’ve convinced me…
I have like 3 different tried and true recipes…

Pam – Your cheesecake rocked my knee socks off.
I love your heart and your willingness to GO.

Johnsie Buller - I am Pam’s mother-in-law and I have eaten some of her cheese cake. It is wonderful, like everything else she makes. I have never made her cheese cake but I will now. Johnsie

Susan - Best ten dollars I have spent. Meg you are indeed a good friend. I only wished you lived near me. Take Care.

Sandy - I had to buy a springform pan to make Pam’s Cheesecake!! Thanks to her and you for sharing it on your blog. I made it for my daughter before she left for Chile to study and do mission work last semester. She made a wonderful Chilean friend while there who will be visiting our family here in the states in December. Pam’s Cheesecake will definitely be on the menu again!!

Lisa - What a wonderful way to support Pam and her sweet family! I treasure my time spent with her at Craft Weekend 16. Making her cheesecake will always be a special way to remember her and the beautiful work she is doing in Africa. Thanks Meg!

Lisa - What a wonderful way to help Pam and her sweet family! I treasure my time spent with her at Craft Weekend 16. Making her cheesecake will always be a special way to remember her and the beautiful work she is doing in Africa. Thanks so much Meg!

Stephanie - I am SO gonna make this cheesecake. Thank you Pam! Thank you, Meg!

Cassie - Of course I had my first amazing slice at craft weekend and I knew being a cheesecake lover I had to make it! The first time I made it was for Easter and then Christmas and then Valentines day…I was finding any reason to make this and there was never a slice left over! Love love love! Thanks Pam for sharing this amazing dessert and good luck on your next journey to Africa!

Tina Wuthnow - LOVE PAM

Thanks for doing this Meg!!!!

CathyC - What an awesome friend you have Meg. What a calling!!!
I have made Pam’s cheesecake and it is amazing!!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE it. (thank you Pam).

Kimberlee Jost - Love that Pam.
🙂

Amy Gubser - I am tearing up reading this. So blessed to know The Buller’s. I am definitely getting a print and hanging Pam’s cheesecake recipe in my kitchen so I can think of them and pray every time I see it. 🙂

Michelle Whitlow - I have made Pam’s cheesecake several timed and you’re right, it’s so easy. And OH MAN is it good!!!! Seriously, my family gobbles it up. Ok, I gobble up more than my fair share, too 😉

Jessica Johnson - We LOOOOVE that cheesecake. And we LOVE Africa more. You are a good friend, Meg.

Darcie - Uhhh… if this is the cheesecake that Kimberlee made at the last Craft Weekend too, then YES. It is the best I’ve had! Someone in our group said, “I don’t like cheesecake.” Someone else said, “This isn’t like cheesecake.” She said, “I won’t like it anyway.” I said, “YESS. You will.” She tried it… “This is NOT like regular cheesecake!” Agreed. I have yet to make it, but now I certainly will!

Lisa - I met Pam and her family a few weeks ago here in Oklahoma! What a wonderful family! They shared in church and it was awesome to see her passion, even from the short amount of time they had to share. I asked her afterwards if she was the Pam that knows you and the Pam that makes the cheesecake…small world!!

Dee Dee Burson - Hi Meg ! Some of our very good friends we go to church with started an orphanage in Liberia several years ago. He went there on a mission trip and fell hard for the precious children there. So he came home and downsized his whole life here and started Orphan Aid Liberia, You can find them on FB. Every month he feeds, clothes, educates 115 children there. It has been amazing to watch his ministry grow ! Best of luck to Pam and her family !

Jenny - Wanted to share a funny story about Pam’s Cheesecake….I had never made a cheesecake before in my 33 years and decided to give this recipe a try! I stayed up super late making it and it came out of the oven looking practically perfect. We were going to a friend’s house for dinner and I took the cheesecake to share. My husband carried it in and while he was walking in he tripped and dropped the cheesecake on the ground! My heart sank and if we hadn’t been around friends I would have had some ugly choice words for him! He knelt down, carefully saved as much of the cheesecake as possible and later that night, the 4 of us sat around and ate Pam’s Cheesecake for dessert, complete with some green grass garnish. I’ve made it several times since this first time and it’s just as delicious every time. Best wishes, Pam and may God Bless You and your family.

Tonya Upton - My sister-in-law was called to be a single missionary in Africa, and while she was there earlier this year, she met a hot missionary boy. They are getting married in one month – Yay! And I’m making Pam’s Cheesecake for their wedding. God’s plan is so awesome.

stephany - I am so thrilled to be able to help Pam and her family!
It was such a blessing to meet her at Craft Weekend 16…and eat the cheesecake that SHE made for us!
Thank you!

i miss my grandma.

so yesterday i drove out to my hair salon which is several towns away in a reeeally small town.
i am almost always late because it is so many towns away.
i spend most of my drive there worrying that i am late and then usually i am right on time.

occasionally i show up on the wrong day… but that is the not the point of this post.

(i just googled the population of this town… 872! oh my goodness)

IMG_0808

so after my hair was colored and cut so nicely i paid and went to my car.

and then i looked to my left and saw poppies!

IMG_0817

this man planted all of these.
he was watering with his red tractor… couldn't be any more perfect?!

it was absolutely gorgeous.
it was so sad to me that i did not have my big camera.
i am going to HAVE to go back with it…soon

my grandma loved flowers.
i mean… she LOVED them.

she gave me poppy seeds many times and told me to just sprinkle them in my flower beds & they would come up.
it never worked for me.
she had the magic touch.
as i walked around that little patch of poppies i kept hearing her voice.
she would have been beaming.
she would have noticed all kinds of details that i missed.
it would have made her day.

i miss her.

Lasso the Moon - This made me choke up a little. My grandmother’s nickname was poppy. Now her daughters and grandchildren hold poppies in the highest regard as a way to remember her sweet self. Thanks for this.
Anna

Heidi Jo the Artist - {{{hugs}}} So hard to lose someone so close to you. May God bring you peace and comfort on those tougher days.
Beautiful, amazing, flowers! Oh, how I love spring!

misty - oh this post made me CRY. not tear up, not just a little cry, but one of the THERAPEUTIC cries. My grandma is so so special to me & she is getting older & it hit me the other day that {obviously} she won’t always be here & I am trying to spend so much time with her right now. 🙂 <3 <3 this post. I hope you sell some of these pics as a print in your shop. I'd love to have one. gorgeous.

elisa - Forget the big camera you did an amazing job at capturing the beauty of poppies. I love the farmer and his tractor and the sky is beautiful. I lost my Dad 7 months ago and this post made me cry….I miss him very much. He loved gardening. Thanks for posting this.

Kimberly - So beautiful. Kansas is so beautiful. I’ve never been. But I love how you can capture it for all of us.
Greetings from Wisconsin!

kristine cline - Oh boy…hit the nail on the head with this one…My grandpa passed in November and my grandma passed two years ago…The peonies made me cry…my grandma loved them so…hugs…thanks for the sweet post!

Lesa - Hi, New to you blog.
Beautiful!!
Lesa
http://www.everydaynotesblog.com

Kris Saia - I’ll bet that man on the tractor was tickled you were so taken with his poppies! I love them, too, but I can’t grow ’em for nuthin’… but I keep trying.

Tiffany - DYYYYYYYING at your selfie. The peony pics are wonderful, u sure that wasn’t ur big camera? Having your grammie in your heart is a pretty wonderful place to keep her memories. Happy Friday!

Whitney - Kansas is so so beautiful! I hope to get there someday (for a craft weekend 🙂 ) I am sure your grandmother was looking down on you smiling. Maybe if you try the poppies again she’ll watch over them and make them bloom!

beth larson - oh Meg!!! I loved this post….my momma died when I was 7 and from then on I lived with my gram. She LOVED flowers too…loved, loved, loved them. She passed that on to me and I can’t get enough of them.
I have poppies and bachelors buttons planted in my garden. I sure hope they come up. And bloom.
Your pictures inspired me!
p.s. did you take these with your phone? when I try to post I-phone pics on my blog they have to be really small or they get blurry- any advice?
xo

Michelle - I didn’t know bachelor buttons grew so tall. I always thought they had short stems, like dahlias.

Jen - Beautiful poppies, Meg! I had a dream last night that I was at your farmhouse with you and your family and Craig took me shopping to buy you presents. I bought you one large and one HUGE chalkboard for your house and an upholstered (sp?) chair for your family room. You were so excited! Then you and Craig went on a date and I noticed you lived right next door to a car maintenance repair shop, but the wide open spaces were on the other side of the house. Dreams are so weird!!!

Valerie @ Chateau a la mode - Sorry you are missing your grandma. I totally get it. Missing long, lost loved ones is hard. You must have loved her very much. She sounds like a special lady. You were lucky to know her for so long. Sending you a bloggy hug xo

Mindy - Such sweet pictures. Thankful for those memories of loved ones that come in unexpected ways.

Debbie Hargadon - Beautiful post. I have always thought – the State of Kansas should use your photos and posts as part of their Tourism Board. Your photos make everyone want to go to Kansas! I agree – that last one is spectacular. Thanks for being a positive distraction to so many of us! And the big camera isn’t always “it” It is the eye of the photographer. 🙂

Karyn - Beautiful! My Gram had beautiful flower gardens at her home in Emporia. The poppies in your pictures are lovely but it’s all the ‘bachelor buttons’ that really spoke to me and made me miss my Gram. 🙂

Carol S. - You’ve got her green thumb. My grandma died at 95 and loved flowers and gardening and cardinals and lady bugs…and now I do too. Sweet memories live on forever. It gets easier but keep telling your kids the lessons and clever things she taught you. I just told my son one of her stories about getting a job back in the late 1920s!

Stephanie - Ok, that would be “think of your grandma”….thanks, auto correct!

Gemma - Gorgeous photos! So beuatiful!
Gemma x
http://musings-of-a-gem.blogspot.co.uk/

Tracy - Awwww. I miss my grandma now, too.
The good thing to remember is that she was beaming and noticing all the beautiful details right there with you 🙂
I am always in awe of the idyllic setting you are surrounded by. I love Kansas City (we actually live in Leawood, KS) and all the conveniences just blocks away, but you make living in the country so appealing!

Amanda - My grandmother loved flowers, too. I have dozens of little envelopes full of seeds that she gave me over the years and, instead of just writing the name of the flower on the outside, she did beautiful, colored pencil drawings of them – she was also an artist.
She passed away last night and I’m about to head to New Mexico for her memorial services. You’ve inspired me to stop and take pictures of the beautiful flowers along the way.

Laura Wilder - Have you read Ashleyann’s blog today? 🙂 No wonder you are friends too! 🙂 I call beautiful moments like this ‘hugs from God’. Oh how he cares for us.

Christian T - Be sure to check Ashley Ann’s blog today… 🙂

Lisa - How gorgeous!

Melissa - Those poppies are amazing! What a neat neat guy. I feel your pain as far as missing your grandma – I was going through the same emotions last night. Oddly enough over Waffle cone wednesday at TCBY – drove by and saw the sign and remembered how that used to be our thing. Lucky we have these great memories.

Lela Pohlmann - So beautiful! Isn’t it amazing how the small things in life remind us of our loved ones. My grandma loved butterflies and amaryllis. I have many butterfly attracting plants and flowers in my yard and when the butterflies start flying, I find myself talking to them like they were my grandma.

Alaina Bennett - and the sky…oh, the sky in that last photo!

Amy M. - So beautiful! Can’t wait to see poppies in your shop! Always fun to read your blog! Have a great day!

heather - the blue flowers are bachelor buttons not weeds 🙂

a - My Grandma is old and often bitter and full of mean nasty words. She is making it very difficult to love her right now. She has not always been this way. This post made me realize how important it is for me to love her past all of that. And that one day I will miss her and ache for her and wish I had not let her brokeness tarnish our relationship. Thanks Meg.

MissPam - In Flanders Fields
The poppies blow
Between the crosses
Row on row
Do you know that poem? From WWI by John McCrae I think.
It’s why Veterans groups pass out poppies on Memorial Day.
Goggle the whole poem. I thought that you were mentioning poppies for
Memorial Day. And in an odd way you were.:)

christy - Beautiful tribute to your grandmother.
That last shot looks like a painting! Beautiful!

karen - Beautiful! You take the prettiest pictures. We have beds of orange poppies around town that are all blooming now. I always love it when I see them. 🙂 My grandma loved iris, she had every color there is in her garden. I miss her too…..

Lorie - They are beautiful! My grandmother lives in AZ and I miss living close to her. She is 93 and I dread the day I get a phone call from my parents telling me she has passed. I dread even more that I won’t be there.
🙁
I am sure your grandma was looking down on you while you enjoyed those beautiful flowers!

Kate - How beautiful. Thank you for sharing those with us. I’m so sorry you miss her. Hugs!

jody - There is a little old woman who lives in a little brown house near my home. Every night I walk by her home with my dog Lily. The old woman has beautiful poppies in her yard. I admire them every night they are in bloom & one night she was outside and said “My mother gave me that plant!” So sweet.
Love lives on. Through each beautiful thing on this planet.
Now I will think of your Grandma too when I see poppies!

Alicia @ La Famille - i have those days too. i miss my grandma too. she was a diva. a real betty draper lady…gorgeous.
beautiful pics, girl. can’t believe they’re phone pics!

Laura Lee - You have made me miss my grandma too. She had a magnolia tree in her back yard that I used to climb. I always thing of her when I see one 🙁

Kristin S - I miss my grandmother too. I called her Googie. Her favorite flower was jonquils. I planted a ton of them this year and each one made me think of her.

Kristine - Your pictures and your sentiment are so beautiful. 🙂

karen - I love this post!! So sweet! Thanks for sharing. I miss my grandma too. EVERYDAY.

Jayne Barbour - God makes beautiful things! And you’re even beautiful in your foils;)

Danielle - So pretty! What are the little blue flowers called? I bought a packet of wildflower seeds and this is exactly what it looks like on the side of my house, but my cousin swears the blue flowers are serious weeds. So, now I’m really curious! 🙂

Tonya - She was saying hello.

Stephanie - OMGosh! I’m in love. And the fact that this makes you junk of your grandma….what an awesome reason to remember someone. These flowers are very patriotic!

Terrie - Beautiful patch of flowers! I hate when I don’t have my big camera…
but, you captured it beautifully!
Bought some poppy seeds yesterday…
Yes, I’m behind…but I’m going to plant anyway. 🙂

Ashley - What a beautiful way to be remembered. I always remember my Granny and Pappy dancing around their farmhouse kitchen, or hearing them pray together as I drifted off to sleep. I think they would all be happy to hear of the ways we remember them. I have no doubt that she would be so proud of you.

Lindsey - So beautiful!

Lisa - My grandpa passed away in February and I have moments like these that remind me of him and make me miss him. You should definitely go back with your real camera. Poppies are such sweet flowers. 🙂

class of 2013

IMG_2397

well… she graduated.
we are VERY proud of her.
the ceremony was outdoors and the sky was so dark… even lightening in the distance.
it was nice to not be SO HOT but the weather was very iffy and made me nervous.
as soon as it ended the entire stadium emptied almost immediately.
it was raining shortly after.

IMG_0304

so we did not get photos of her afterward with friends or with her tassel, etc.
but we got this one really quick before the ceremony.
she got a new dress and looked so pretty!

our party almost didn't happen because of the weather.
there was even a tornado 30 minutes away!
i said "well… it's not a TRUE Kansas party without a tornado watch"

IMG_0344

she requested rainbow cake.
i hadn't made one in a few years…. remember when i first made it?
way back before they were EVERYWHERE.
BEFORE martha stewart.
granted martha's was very professional looking and perfect.
but mine is filled with a mama's love.
🙂
perfection is not the goal.

it was so fun to make it again.
IMG_2418

we kept the snacks and drink very simple.
and credit to my boys… they helped me big time preparing the food.
they rocked yesterday!
it was "Duerksen Team Effort" for sure all week long.
that was a huge blessing we kept it simple since it POURED hard rain just before the party.
anything elaborate we would have done would've been ruined.

every party should have a baby.
it should be a rule.
so many of craig's family came by to wish lauren good luck in college and give her hugs.
one great thing about big milestones like graduations or weddings is seeing the family you don't see as often.

IMG_2499

IMG_2473

it was so fun to have my friends show up to love on me as well as lauren.
high school graduation is big deal for the kids but also a BIG DEAL for the parents too!
and they snuck off and were cleaning up in my kitchen and doing dishes when i wasn't looking.
grown up friends are the best!

IMG_2375

IMG_2446

although… i prefer babies at parties that are not wearing K-State onesies.
he is so cute that i made an exception.
i was so busy that i never even got to hold this guy! lauren took over as baby holder for this party.

IMG_0320

family friends that we have had since i was 8 years old came to celebrate.
(my dad did not get the memo about the black shirt…)

i LOVE that they came.
that is love ya know?  showing up for your people.   taking the time.  it is meaningful.
it makes me teary.

craig was face timing with his sister during the party.
🙂
isn't that fun?  she got a little tour of the party and said hello.
2013 is pretty awesome.

IMG_2519

i took an after photo this morning since it was too crazy yesterday.
our new little patio that we put in and all the pots of flowers make this place even happier.
it's so peaceful out there.
my chippy painted metal benches got new cushions. (home depot online)
i used all old pots, buckets and planters i already had to plant flowers inside.
the bunting is the same as what i sell in my shop…not weather proof but who cares.
it holds up just fine.

great party.

i think lauren felt loved.
and that was the most important part of yesterday for me.

and now i am going to go sit on that yellow bench.
🙂

Lynn - Congratulations and many blessings to you and your family. Your daughter Lauren has such a God blessed sweet spirit. Kudos to you as parents.

TAB - What a lovely party, lovely family and lovely grad. She’s beautiful.

Heidi - Beautiful post all-around. Our family recently drove 8 hours round trip (with two small kids) to attend a family graduation and we were so glad we did!

Rhonda Quaney - She is such a beauty. I can just feel her gentleness from here. Had to pray for your sweet girl. And every party should definitely have a baby. Your graduation party was complete with love, darling-ness, ….and the baby. Thanks for sharing it all.

Barbara (WA) - What a special day beautifully done! Time flies (my sons are in their 30’s now). Have a great after the big event weekend!
http://northislandcottage.blogspot.com/

Kat - I got all teary seeing Lauren so grown up, so I can only imagine how you feel.
What a gorgeous girl.
You have inspired me with your potted colour everywhere. So many beautiful flowers and I adore the pots.
Simple but oh so effective. One of those things that I often think I must do but rarely get around to.
We need some pops of colour on our deck as it is autumn and soon to be winter here in Aus.
It looked like a beautiful, colourful party, full of love.

Whitney - Love your patio, I want those benches!
Second- I cannot believe how grown up Lauren is! Gorgeous girl! I wish she let you tell us more about her life… so happy for you all, the party looked wonderful. Best wishes for Lauren in the future!

Angie - Congrats to Lauren! What a huge moment in all your lives
The party looked amazing. Your rainbow cake turned out just perfect
Wishing Lauren a future full of blessings 🙂

Bree - Congratulations to your daughter and to you all! Prayers for her transition into this new season of life. On another note-new pictures for the shop- yellow daisy picture, flowers with the green chair, and the fabulous yellow chick in the Barbie car! Love it! Happy and blessed week to you.

Barbara - Congratulations HS so many memories made in those short four years, love the patio all of it!

Kayla - Lauren, you are beautiful. You look so happy in your pictures! Congratulations on your graduation. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse of your life….we don’t see you enough on your mom’s blog. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!

Rach - I never knew until I became a parent how emotional all of our children’s milestones are on us as the parents. Our eldest is just finishing her first year in pre-school next week (which I am sure seems like so long ago for you after watching your eldest just graduate from high-school) and I find myself filled with heartache at the passing of such a milestone in her life. There will be so many more of these end of the school year events in her life and with each I will shed a tear as I watch her grow and thrive and get one step closer to leaving our home to become her own person and start her own life. Congratulations Meg on raising a wonderful young woman. May she only continue to thrive and grow outside the shelter of your heart and home.

elisa - I love the pic with your daughter surrounded with older women on the porch. We all need older women to look up too and help shape us.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - She did it!!!!! I remember my HS grad and party like it was YESTERDAY. Weird??
Your party was awesome. You looked so pretty. Lauren, too.
I’m glad your people showed up for you. 🙂
Hope you all felt way loved.
And I was going to tell you that I’m probably going to steal your bunting idea but I figured it was waterproof. Since it’s not, I’m extra-on it!

Valerie @ Chateau a la mode - Congrats to your beautiful Lauren!

Tracy - Congratulations to Lauren and your whole family! Next year we will be celebrating my oldest’s high school graduation. I can’t believe it! Where has the time gone??
Where has Lauren decided to go to school? I’m in KC and went to KU. My husband went to Missouri. My son is leaning toward Mizzou 🙁 I feel the same way about K-State as you do!!
BTW I love your blog!

chrissi - congrats to lauren. what a wonderful circle of family and friends that came to show their love for such a pretty girl. (congrats to mom and dad too for getting through a graduation day/party.)

Lisa - Such a big deal having a child graduate high school! Congratulations to both of you!

Lori Austin - Congrats to Lauren (btw, she is so beautiful!).
Looks like a wonderful celebration with family.
You bright, fun patio is fantastic.
Container flowers turned out beautiful as well.

Rachel Reeves - It looked special and sweet, Meg.
A day that she won’t soon forget.

susan - Congratulations to Lauren! Love to read about FAMILY gatherings. Memories
to keep forever.
Meg, you have a beautiful family. Blessed by your writing.

Carol S. - It all looks wonderful. Congrats to you and your family. Good things are coming next! Freshman college son just home now and we are enjoying a “new and improved” version of him. After a year of independence, he seems engaged and appreciates of home and our family. Yay! Gotta plant more large buckets of flowers and get some festive bunting…fantastic inspiration pics. Awesome patio.

Tiffany - This makes me happy. I’m so glad you have such fantastic family and friends around you. What a blessing. (And your place looks SUPER cute!) (AND, Martha has nothing on you.)

Amy - I just love everything about you. (As much as I can know from reading your blog for the last four+ years) Except the fact that you don’t love K-State. Oh well. No one is perfect. 🙂
Just kidding.
Congratulations!! The party looks amazing! Your family is beautiful!

Dawn Gross - Congratulations! That’s a big milestone.
Your house looks super cute – patio is lovely.
Glad you all are safe & sound.

Mac - Congratulations to Lauren and your family on her graduation. Your rainbow cake which I saw on the Poppytalk blog a couple of years ago is what inspired me to start following your blog. It certainly is a great symbol for your happy, optimistic but always realistic blog which I continue to enjoy every morning once my 4 children are off to school.

Kristin S - Beautiful!

misty - congratulations lauren!!! I have been following your blog since july of 2008 & it doesn’t seem possible that your lauren is graduating!
love your seating area & those striped cushions. what a fun party. I alway associate a rainbow cake with you meg! not martha! i think martha must have ppl reading your blog to find out what’s cool 😉
stay safe from this crazy weather! we have been taking cover & praying.

elma - What a wonderful party!! Congratulations to Lauren may the Lord be with her and Bless her!!

The Domestic Fringe - Congrats to your daughter! Looks like a fabulous party. Love the cake.
~FringeGirl

vicki - You, my darling, can make anywhere feel like a home. What a lovely way to go through life. Your daughter is breathtaking. Congratulations family. And friends. And family friends. I firmly believe it takes a village….congratulations village…what a lovely woman you have all raised. Happy summer to you and your dear family. Good luck young lady on what lies ahead.

Pat - congratulations to Lauren on her big day! I must say, that yard looked like the perfect place for a party. I’m a little jealous, wished that was my happy patio!! You guys did an amazing job!

Alicia @ La Famille - congrats to your little girl!!! and your pictures are so happy! glad the weather held up for you. 🙂

Kimberlee Jost - Beautiful.
I am happy that Lauren feels loved, and that you do, too.

Georgia - Love the photos, lauren looks so grown up!
Good luck to her, college next?
I dont know how it works in the USA, as she would still be in 6th form, or college in the uk.. confusing! 🙂 x

Cindy in WA - Congrats to Lauren!!! My oldest is graduating in a few weeks too! Is she going to a local college or far away?

jerusalem - ok, now I am weepy too! I have a yellow glider like yours-it was my great-grandmothers and came here all the way from Mississippi. I love it and I love your little patio area.

Chantelle - Congrats to you all. Lauren is a beautiful girl! PS: love the cake!

Susan - Congratulations to your pretty daughter, Lauren. She will treasure this moment forever. Congratulations to you and your husband. These moments are bittersweet. However, she will still need you both and she will seek your counsel in the days and years to come. Then, one day, you will discover that not only do you love her but you like her! Those are precious moments also. From a mom who has already traveled that road, it seems that you did a GOOD JOB!

lisa currie-gurney - Congratulations to you and Craig.
You’ve done it.
God is good.
So good.
Hugs From My Heart

Katey - Congratulations to the Whole Family!!! My son graduated last year and I will have another one next year. It goes by way too fast!! It’s tough. Tough on everyone. Glad you had a nice party and loving memories of the day.

Terrie G - Congrats to Lauren & You & Craig!! You are so right…it is a big deal for the parents too!
I worried about all of the graduations going on with our crazy weather yesterday!
Glad that you were able to celebrate & all were safe.
LOVED the rainbow cake! And your home was decorated beautifully.
Lauren is growing up into quite a beautiful young lady!
And that baby!! I must say, I had to make sure I was reading your blog
when I saw the K-State onsie..but I thought it was the cutest outfit EVER!! Wink, Wink!!
Hope your week is relaxing!! 🙂
I’m off to buy flowers…well, maybe after this storm passes!
