10 things i am loving.

well my MAC is giving the blue screen of death.
my husband thinks he can maybe fix it.
i was planning on blogging about Camp CREATE but all the pics i have are on the laptop.
so… let’s hope it comes back to life.

so for today… i will share my recent 10 faves on pinterest.

so… i am off to get groceries, take a kid to the dentist and make lists.
i made a list of things to put on my list.
so i wouldn’t forget them.

i often wonder what the mind of an organized person feels like….  and then i get distracted.

not kidding.

have a super day!

heather m. - *a list of things to put on my list* <— oh how I understand this!
I'm tardy to the party as in I just found your blog (oh my gosh what have I been missing!!!) and you're too funny! ♥
I also pinned the FPFG closet! (and her living room and her kitchen months ago…)
And I am loving your site- your craft house! Oh my! Be warned it shall be pinned too! And I'm sorry about your MAC : ( We have a definite love/hate relationship with technology in our neck of the woods. Blessings on it for healing! haha
Happy Friday!

Meredith Feisel - Love all of these. Going to make the crayon and watercolor art with my daughter tonight!

april R - if i paint something like the projects does that mean it’s ok to have the cookie as big as my face?
bc both are sounding really awesome. right. now.

Flower Patch Farmgirl - I love these posts you do, maybe because we seem to have the exact same taste in all things.

I’m DYING for that green/white globe.

And would you make me a pair of comfy lounge pants? In a Tall?

ps – WHAT??? WHEN?!!!!

Tanya H - ohhh the lists I make…! and the piles they accumulate in… 🙂 Thanks for the dose of happy things!

Tara - We share a brain most days

Tanya - I often wonder what the mind of an organized person feels like too – for realz.

Lisa - I’m in love with the bedroom with the red accents and green side table! And the painting of the paints. Glad you found who to credit cause she deserves it!

Jenny B. - So funny! And so many pretty things! 🙂 So sad about your MAC! They are not supposed to do that! Now, I’m scared for mine… (I know, silly… I tend to worry about how the bad things that happen to other people could happen to me). And I chuckled when I read that you want to make comfy lunge pants. I know it’s a just little typo, but I totally pictured you doing lunges in your new pants (which would be a perfectly appropriate activity). Ha! 🙂

Liz R. - The watercolor painting of the watercolor set is by Emily Forland. (I did a little research..) She has some really beautiful illustrations! http://www.emilyforlandillustration.com/smallthings.html

long weekend.

i had a lovely weekend.
we worked HARD but had fun too.
we watched Mrs. Doubtfire and stayed up past midnight.
we grilled burgers and brats.  (and i made these turkey spinach &feta burgers for me… YUM)
we shopped at lowes and even the kids liked it!
we went to a HS football scrimmage.
craig made homemade ice cream.
our kids played basketball together.
we sat outside, listening to music on the deck and enjoyed the view.
IMG_0591
i found the biggest grasshopper i have seen in my 38 years of life.

IMG_0605IMG_0435
we had beautiful weather and terrible thunderstorms all in one weekend.

IMG_0506
IMG_0532
i got crafty for Camp CREATE.

IMG_0551
we gave away the last of the kittens and are down to just two cats again. 🙂

IMG_0563
i scored the best quilt E V E R at our local thrift shop.
we got take out pizza for dinner…meaning i didn’t have to cook.

IMG_0569
annie and i made bunting past her bedtime.

i texted with friends i miss a whole bunch.
i finished a book.

IMG_0624
i found out that i REALLY like this premade coffee and i REALLY like this almond coconut milk.

IMG_0723
we went to our favorite pool on the last day it was open for the year.
and played with our new Watershot underwater case for my iPhone… AWESOME!!!
(i will post all the fun pics later this week… SO MUCH FUN!)
IMG_0730IMG_0846
craig and i worked all day saturday and all day monday at the craft house.
yard work and pressure washer and gutter cleaning and painting and furniture moving.
we were so tired.

so i made margaritas.
IMG_0859
this space doesn’t look like much now… but it will.
our swingset used to be here but we gave it away.
we cleared and cleaned and it’s ready for a facelift this week.

IMG_0865
and my sweet husband sold his pool table for me.
it was a little sad to see it go but Craft Weekend just got a little roomier.
(don’t cry for him too long… our new house has a pool table so he can still play)

how was your long weekend?

Tiffany - What a fun and productive weekend! My favorite kind! I’m excited to see your outdoor facelift! It will be amazing, I’m sure.

Mindy - Beautiful picture of the cornfield and that grasshopper is a big one – what a gorgeous green color he is!

Jenn - I think we should always have Mondays off. Its just nice to really relax on Sunday with no worries of Monday.

Ali - Great weekend ! Can you teach on the blog how to make a bunting !?! Such a great craft !!

Barbara (WA) - Great weekend beginning with dinner with friends and then major work on our office/library, yahoo!! Just wanted to say I immediately noticed the Red & White sign. I have a friend with a huge collection because family members owned one of those groceries.

Angela - Well, my husband is deployed, so my 8-month old son was my date to an out-of-town wedding, and we also did about 5 billion little projects around the house with my lovely grandparents.

In other news, I’ve just started sewing and I made my first bunting. I’d like to make one similar to the ones you and Annie made, but I don’t really have that much fabric. I need to go fabric/remnant shopping, but I’ll probably end up finding a ton I love and buying, you know, all of it. Whoops. 🙂

tasha roe - im so excited for your new adventures at the craft house!!
where did you find the coconut flavored almond creamer?!!!!! I’m kind of twitching over how awesome that would be.

Janet - The craft house is coming along! i love all your photos especially the one of your dog!

Jenny B. - So many lovely photos! 🙂 I am in love with that yellow tray from the thrift store!! I hit one flea market this weekend, and I was on the hunt for a tray, but came home empty-handed. Any chance you want to sell that one?? 😉

danielle - I need to thrift shop more! That quilt is beautiful! Looks like a fun full weekend! We hiked, biked, went to church, and did our first day of school 🙂

Kerri - That is a gorgeous quilt!

color.

1.  i wish i lived in Winnipeg so i could see Kal Barteski’s artwork in real life.
LOOK AT THIS PLACE!
like…. so bad.
this project looks amazing!!!

2.  speaking of art…
these paintings of flowers bursting with color are just crazy gorgeous.
my chest kind of aches when i look at them.
what is that about?
why?
i get so emotional when i look at all that color… all those brush strokes mixed up in color making a beautiful scene.
it is amazing isn’t it?

this artist’s name is Erin Fitzhugh Gregory.
i am in awe.
i want all her paintings and i want to be able to paint like that.
what a dream that would be?!

3.  and since i am obviously feeling artsy today….
i want to do this project.
like this very minute!!!

she’s so right!
colors = emotions = beauty

have a colorful day today!

🙂

Jennifer @ Ellison Lane Quilts - Oh how I love color too. And I am a huge fan of Erin’s work. We were super lucky to receive one of her beautiful floral paintings for Christmas this year. It’s amazing and makes me happy every time I look at it which is all the time!
To be able to paint like that would be a dream!

Thanks for all that you share with the online community! You inspire me!
🙂
Jennifer

Mindy - I love the watercolor at the bottom. I am a neutral girl who appreciates color – does that even make sense? Part of why I love visiting here is for your happy color : )

daina funk - Kal is amazing. I have met her briefly and she is so kind and I have stood inside the artwork that you have linked and I wish all of your blog followers could experience it. It really is beauty. Buy some of her artwork!!!

Jeanene - Hey, I really love color too! Yours is the only blog that I follow regularly (besides family) because we share the same design taste…I think…anyway. But, I have been thinking of you a lot lately because I have been following the Emory Hospital story and Dr. Brantly. I am so thankful that he is well and back with his family. He is a true and faithful servant and I am so glad he has been blessed with health along with Nancy Writebol. Oh, and your family is beautiful. It reminds me of mine except we have 3 boys and 2 girls. 🙂

Tiffany - Erin Gregory’s artwork is vibrant and beautiful. Sure hope she reopens her etsy shop.

Julie - I love that floral artwork. So many people shy away from using and enjoying colour in their homes – I am glad you are not one of them.

Melodie Schellenberg - I read the first line of your blog today and said….”what now, huhhhh!” I live in Winnipeg! I am going to check art out!

Kerenza - Hi Meg, I’ve been reading your blog for years, and I live in Winnipeg! That’s cool that you mentioned my city!

Linda - Oh my gosh!!! Thanks you for that splash of color it was just what I needed today!!

Julie L - I love color too! With you loving color so much, you should definitely check out my sister’s website http://www.janalamberti.com/. She’s a silk artist–she paints on silk with dye. The last time I visited her I watched her do it, and while I’m definitely biased–I think it’s still pretty awesome.

our best father’s day gift

of course i have no ideas about what to do THIS father’s day for  my husband but i thought i would tell you the BEST gift we have ever found for Craig in past father’s days.

he loves ice cream.
L O V E S.

about 4 years ago now… we got him a homemade ice cream machine!

photo-64
he is not into gifts or celebrating really but he was surprised and very happy with this gift.
which made me so happy!
(i AM into gifts and celebrating so when someone loves my gift… it’s a gift to ME!)

he makes really yummy ice cream too!
we even took it on vacation with us so we could make ice cream there too.

it’s the kind of machine that turns & turns, is really loud and you fill the outside with lots of ice and salt.
it is the sound of summer.
does that make you think of your childhood?
i don’t even remember WHERE we had homemade ice cream when i was a kid… but i remember the machines.
i have one memory of an ice cream party outside the library in the town we moved from when i was 7.
i can see it from a short 7 year old’s perspective… everyone is tall… the building across the street is tall… and there is LOTS of ice cream right at eye level on folding tables.

🙂

anyways… back to the ice cream MACHINE.
i chose the White Mountain Ice Cream Maker based off reviews from my friends of what is “the best”.
also because we have a big family so 1 – 2 quarts of ice cream isn’t even enough for each of us to get a bowl.
so i went for the big machine… that is electric… not hand crank.
this machine is pricey but from what everyone says, they last forever.
i wanted it to last through my kids childhood. i wanted to create a memory for them.
making homemade ice cream, outside on the porch, on a summer night… that’s the good stuff.

if you wanted something quieter, smaller, sleeker and i guessing much less messy… you could try this one.
it makes 2 quarts each time.

this one looks similar to the white mountain one but the motor attachment is plastic instead of metal.
61osGRrLrFL._SL1500_

MaxiMatic 6-Quart Old-Fashioned Ice-Cream Maker

then this one i have seen at walmart and all over.
could be worth a try?
it’s about the cost of 5 gallons of ice cream.
and it makes FOUR quarts… that is pretty good!
anyone have this one?  does it hold up?

Hamilton Beach 4-Quart Ice-Cream Maker, White

and then i saw this?!!
WHAAAAAT?
an in-home soft serve ice cream maker???
ummm….. my kids would think this was THE COOLEST thing ever!?!!

Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker

there is also an attachment you could put directly onto your KitchenAid mixer that makes ice cream?!
did you know that?

KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment + Bonus Soft Thumb Release Ice Cream Scoop

and this has nothing to do with ice cream machines but don’t you think this green mixer belongs in my new kitchen?
it is gor-ge-ous!!!

KitchenAid5-Quart Mixer   – there are a million colors but this green is just the best!

i was looking for recipes and came across these books.
i am a sucker for a beautiful book cover.
this one is just that.
out of curiosity…. are you a fan of waffle cones, sugar cones, regular cones or NO cone… bowl only?

Ample Hills Creamery: Secrets and Stories from Brooklyn’s Favorite Ice Cream Shop

and hey… even if you are dairy free there is still ice cream to be enjoyed!
woo-hoo!
everything in this book is based off coconut, almond or cashew milk.
i would be up for trying that!

Dairy-Free Ice Cream: 75 Recipes

we made milkshakes the other night and annie requested Oreos in  chocolate ice cream.
i tasted it.
it was U N R E A L.
how is that not a flavor in the store?!!!
how are they not making millions off of Chocolate Cookies & Cream?!!
what is wrong with the ice cream makers of the world?!

🙂

what is your favorite flavor ice cream?

and help me…. what should i get craig this year for father’s day???

Whitney - What a fun gift! Our summer bucket list includes breaking out the ice cream maker. As for ice cream flavors- The Ice Cream Factory in my hometown in Maine makes Chocolate Fudge Oreo (chocolate ice cream with oreos and a fudge swirl) it’s my favorite! And makes an awesome milkshake! (They also have terrific flavors like Cherry Seinfeld- chocolate ice cream with white chocolate chips and bing cherries! Yum, now I want to drive the half hour to them and make my own sundae with chocolate fudge oreo!)

Valerie - I have the Sweet Dreams and Sugar Cones book and I really like the recipes I’ve tried – salted caramel and the chocolate using dark chocolate are my favorites. I’d like to try Jeni’s and the Perfect Scoop sometime because I hear them recommended as well.

marcie - Get him a gigantic (like laundry basket-sized) basket of every type of ice cream topping known to man and then y’all can try new combos and make memories all Summer long! My dad adores ice cream and the old-fashioned hand churn is a major Summer memory for me.BTW, my dad orders his hot fudge topping by the case from some fancy-schmancy place and he is not like that at all except when it comes to his ice cream – so go for the toppings!!! Happy Summer!!

Jermaine D. - I would add my FAVORITE cook book of all time: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. They are smaller batches, so you’d probably have to double for a big family, but they are SO GOOD! She goes into the chemistry of making good ice cream and these actually have a great texture after freezing, unlike the typical icy vanilla homemade ice cream, which is best eaten right away. She also has a new desserts cookbook out. I also have a bigger Hamilton Beach ice cream maker that has worked well for 5+ years! Hmm, I am already dreaming up which flavor ice cream to make next…

Tiffany - Oh, Meg… an ice cream post?! Just when I didn’t think I could like you more. 🙂

I’m into gifting experiences. We have enough stuff. We are taking my husband sailing. He has talked about wanting to do it forever. Not sure if Craig would be into that, but doing something special and unique as a family is such a wonderful gift.

Kim - We had a mixer similar to the Hamilton Beach for about 10 years until part of it got lost in a move. We now have the Hamilton Beach and it has worked well for about 3 years now (granted, we only use it about 3-4 times per year) but for our needs it’s great. Our first ice cream machine came with a recipe book and one of our favorites is the cinnamon ice cream! Yum!!

Sarah - You have just given me one more reason to want a Kitchen Aid! Why oh why did I not ask for one back when we were getting married. It’s so much harder to convince the hubby I need one now when I’ve already survived nine years of marriage without. I think the idea of just having an attachment to store for making the ice cream is such a great idea. I get kind of annoyed by large appliances taking up room on my shelves.

My husband’s favorite Father’s Day present was a root beer sampler I put together for him a few years ago. I bought a ton of root beer in glass bottles. I tried to get a dozen different brands, but couldn’t find quite that many. He loved it and it has become a yearly tradition (and shopping challenge for me). This year he just asked for music, but I am thinking about getting him a bunch of stuff to organize his tools and work bench area. Not looking at that messy eyesore every time I need to borrow a tape measure would be a great gift for both of us. 🙂

Sarah{Handbags*and*Pigtails} - I bought that 2 QT Cuisinart ice cream maker above from a neighbor’s yard sale a few years ago- 5 bucks! We made so much ice cream that year! So don’t forget to check yard sales. People clean out and don’t want unused appliances taking up space in their kitchen. Ice cream makers can be one of those if you don’t use it enough. 🙂 Happy creaming everyone!

colleen - So, I looked up father’s day gifts in kansas… u have to check this out! out!http://www.cloud9living.com/kansas-city/popular-experience-gifts
Personally I think the hot air balloon ride is a good one…. bet he’s never done it before!
so funny!

Julie - We really love homemade ice cream at our house too, but so far every machine has been a dud or more work that it appears to be. We had the Cuisinart soft serve maker, but a lot of the plastic pieces broke apart after less than a year, it was hard to clean and took up too much valuable space in our freezer — so it got dumped. 🙁
For your ice-cream loving husband, you could splurge for Father’s Day and order him something from ecreamery.com! Their shop is here in Omaha, NE, but they ship anywhere, and you can even “create” your own flavors and ice cream names. (If anyone is coming in to town for the College World Series, it is a fun place to stop!)

Cheryl Jaeger - Thank you for this post. I had no idea the KitchenAid mixer had an attachment for making ice cream. Where have I been?!?!

Tanya H - Sooo my grandparents had a tradition of making homemade ice cream for all birthdays, which ended up being a once-a-month event when I was a kid. My family had moved away so my dad carried on the tradition for us. He does raspberry, strawberry or peach, but the #1 requested by my mom and siblings is oreo. For my wedding, we were given a machine like the Hamilton Beach white that you’ve shown. My husband found a recipe book by Ben & Jerry’s and that was what we gave as wedding gifts for a long time- an ice cream machine and the book!
I think we went thru two of that style in the first 6 years of our marriage and we’re currently “in the market” for something better. The second one was broken when we loaned it out.
You can find the book here: http://www.amazon.com/Jerrys-Homemade-Cream-Dessert-Book/dp/0894803123/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1402502245&sr=1-1&keywords=ben+%26+jerry%27s

Heather - LOVE homemade ice cream. My mom likes to remind us that “back in the day” they had to sit on top of them while someone else cranked them. If you haven’t tried some chopped up Snickers in plain ol’ vanilla, give it a whirl. It is yummy. I prefer waffle cones! And we got my husband a fishing cart and we are headed to the beach and pier to let him fish to his heart’s content. Maybe the family could take in a baseball game together and head to your favorite ice cream shop afterwards? I think experiences are just as good as traditional gifts sometimes!

Heather S. - LOVE ice cream. Too much. It’s my food achilles heel. I can turn down any dessert except that. The cake lady above? I’m her polar opposite. Hold the cake, just give me the ice cream. We should do birthday parties together. 🙂
Faves: mint chip, cookies and cream, espresso chip (my mother in law makes this THE BEST).
We have an ice cream maker we’ve had since we got married 15 years ago. Something is wrong with it and it’s no longer working. I took that as a sign that I should stop making ice cream, but now I;m eye-balling that Cuisinart one as you are the second person to mention it to me this week. I like that it makes *less* – that means less temptation.

Amy Huff - Summering with my Grandparents in Eureka, KS meant lots of ice cream outside but we got to crank it! Luckily there were a lot of Grandkids.

I have both of those ice cream books, I’m also a lover a gorgeous covers, but the best recipes I’ve found are in The Perfect Scoop book by David Lebovitz. So yummy!
http://www.amazon.com/The-Perfect-Scoop-Granitas-Accompaniments/dp/158008219X

Jen - My husband actually asked for TIES this year!!

Malinda - Love the KitchenAid, but I think you could DIY it!

http://lifeasiknowit-blog.com/2014/06/paint-kitchen-aid-mixer.html

Jen - We have the same ice cream machine. It is loud (!), but makes great ice cream! We are on our second motor, however. I love mint chocolate chip, but we always make vanilla in our ice cream machine. My husband is getting a power washer this Father’s Day.

Beth Ann - We were on vacation in the Ozarks a few years ago and bought a cheapo sunbeam one while on vacation (it was on clearance at Walmart for like $10 or something crazy cheap, we were looking for pool toys). We made ice cream on the patio overlooking the lake. I had completely forgotten about it and it is sitting in my basement as I type this. I need to get it out today. My kids and I are going to a pick-your-own strawberry farm and I think that ice cream and strawberries sound great! I might need to whip up an angel food cake quick too! Does anyone have any favorite ice cream recipes they’d care to share?

Kirsten J - Ok (whispering here) – I really don’t care for ice cream. A taste here or there, maybe, and maybe fudge brownie something or other once in a great while. At parties I always say “cake only, please” and people think I’m nuts. But my family knows that little quirk about me. Also, smoothies make me gag. Although….you triggered a memory, and when I first started dating my hubby, 35 years ago, they had an ice cream maker. And I think that would be an excellent Fathers Day gift – off to check them out!

Tammy - Google how to make Crush ice cream. Trust me, it is delicious. Especially with pineapple. You are welcome. yes, it’s that good!

Heidi - I have a cuisinart and I love it. Another great ice cream recipe book that I loooove… The Jeni’s ice cream recipe book. Hers is the best base, hands down.

Amy Woods - We love making ice cream! It is definitely a summer tradition for us. And we always, ALWAYS, take our ice cream maker with us on vacation. Do you have Big Red soda in Kansas? If so, mix 1 can of condensed milk per 2L of Big Red. Not really ice “cream” but it is a favorite of ours. We’ve done it with Root Beer too! 😉

Dawn Gross - Mint chocolate chip! Or teaberry. Or choc peanut butter cup. We had an ice cream maker when I was a kid — that we only used in the winter. We used snow. It was LOUD.

Dawn

Jenny B. - Fun! We used to make homemade ice cream at my grandma’s house every year on the Fourth of July. It’s my favorite holiday. We had both an electric ice cream maker and an old hand crank one. Sometimes to get the best results, we would start a batch in the electric one, and then move it to the hand cranker. You had to sit on it and put ALL your muscle into it. We took turns. 🙂 It was always soupy, but oh so yummy. Nothing else really like it. When I was little and my grandparents still had their huge garden, all the kids would go pick strawberries so we could have them with the vanilla ice cream. YUM.

Jessica - We love making homemade ice cream! I got the ample hill creamery book for Mother’s Day. Lots of neat ideas & flavors. But I was disappointed with the amount of ice cream the base recipe produces. We have a family of 5 & it barely made enough for each of us to have 2 small scoops. Our favorite flavor is either vanilla or chocolate with frozen chopped ding dongs mixed in, delicious!

lorel - A couple years ago Kevin’s aunt gave us the Cuisinart soft serve machine -maybe I’ll have to bring it when we visit! It’s a lot of fun. Those spaces on the left hold toppings and as the crank turns, you open the spigot, and with each rotation, little portions of toppings drip out, along with the ice cream.

MollyL - Actually it happens to be my current favorite ice cream at Baskin Robbins. It is chocolate with chunks of chocolate and oreo in it. I LOVE it! We will have to try Oreos in a shake this summer.

Michelle Whitlow - I LOVE homemade ice cream!!! I have a cheapo Sunbeam one I bought at Target a few years ago and so far it’s holding up. I really want to get the Cuisinart one or the attachment for my Kitchen aid. I keep holding out for Mother’s Day but clearly my family hasn’t gotten the hint 😉 Cuisinart had a lime green colored one that I wanted SO bad but I haven’t seen it in a while so I’m not sure if they’re still making it in that color.

Deb Meyers - voila! paint your hutch the color of that mixer!

Jennifer - I have that white mountain passed downed from my grandfather which he used when I was a kid, so I’d say you can expect it to last!
Also, you need this cookbook! http://www.amazon.com/Jenis-Splendid-Ice-Creams-Home/dp/1579654363
If you haven’t had Jeni’s and ever get the chance, do it!

PaisleyJade - Drooling through this whole post! We have chocolate icecream with cookies in here in New Zealand! Mmmmmm!

Becky - I have the kitchen aid attachment and I LOVE it! It’s super convenient because it just hangs out in your freezer…you don’t need to mess with ice. It’s almost TOO convenient 😉

miranda - Just bought that soft serve ice cream maker for Father’s Day. I kinda want it too. Haaa!!

Kelly - Oh my goodness!!!! THANK YOU!! I am going to get my husband that kitchen aid attachment and one of the recipe books for Father’s Day!! Ice cream (and cooking) are his THING!

Fay - We have that exact White Mountain. My parents have the hand crank abd we love to use it when we’re visiting them. Best quality ice cream maker out there! Our favorite flavor is Milky Way – tastes a lot like a Frosty. YUM!

Stephanie - I love that you husband was thrilled with a ice cream maker!
My husband will be out of town for Father’s Day this year, and was two years ago too. 🙁 so I am looking for ways to make his day special long distance!
I am kinda horrible with knowing what to buy people. I hope you find the perfect gift for Craig!

april r - So ice cream that’s homemade, is it any healthier than store bought? I’m guessing it would be . . . that self serve machine is rad (and slightly scary)

Best wishes on finding a great Father’s Day gift.
My guy loves movies so we’ll get movie tickets. And a professional car wash is something that’s a splurge for him too. We live near the beach and sometimes that’s what we do instead of gifts – just spend all day on the beach.
Maybe thinking like that – events, concerts, service, etc will help you find the right thing this year 🙂

Tammy - You need to look up Jeni’s Ice Cream. She is an Ohio favorite and has the best unique flavors. I think she has two books out!

BLOGstripRNBW1000

tracy fisher - i’m soooo excited to hear. i’m trying to refocus. I pray about it a lot. I wish the best for you. you deserve it girl!

Amber - I joined the Sugar Detox starting on June 1st. I too am freaking out. I don’t feel as though I consume too much sugar on a daily basis because it makes me feel bad, however I am afraid of how much hidden stuff I will be made aware of. Whatever though, we are going to kick sugar’s butt all over town!!!

tara - God has been working a big dream in my heart, too.
can’t wait to hear all about it when you’re ready to share.

ps. i feel sure if my parents bought me anything, it might be something like a family of mauve and country blue geese. your parents did GOOD.

Kristin S - Last comment, hilarious. Always love your genuineness, Meg.

CathyC - Can’t wait for you to share what your new dream is!

Gina - You make me laugh.

Melanie Griesedieck - Hi Meg,thanks to your shout out to Marta last week with her links because I also started the Sugar Detox yesterday. I’ve been wanting to do something like this for the last few months but didn’t know how to go about it alone. Love your blog!

Mollie @Sprinkles of Life - I need to hit up Lowe’s to find that mint green. Love it!

I’m doing sugar-free too! Have been since last Monday! We’re not eating sugar of any kind. Even honey. Even all the hidden forms of sugar on ingredient lists. I’ve found bread to be the hardest thing to find. And English muffins. I realllly want a dessert but I’m holding out. 2 1/2 more weeks! 🙂

Jill @ Cora Anne Designs - Can’t wait to find out what you’re up to, I bet it’s awesome!!

Paula - I love green too. Check out Mary Carol’s blog this week at http://www.nellhillsblog.com
It’s all about using green. Saw it and thought of you.

jenn - so…. I know you are kinda busy…. momming, moving, etc. but I have a question – that is asked wrapped in love and patience, and wonder and hope…

Are you going to post pictures of your new house? Lots of them? I LOVE and am inspired by your color, your extraordinary of the ordinary, and would really REALLY love to see the new house.

Now, I also realize you may have decided to keep it private, and I can respect that too. Family. I get it. but, on the chance that you are willing to share….. well?

If you need a reason – it is my birthday on Friday?! 🙂 Just curious. Thanks! Hope you get to visit your friends in Michigan! 🙂

jennie - can’t wait to see what’s in store!

Gevay - Can’t wait to hear the big news!

jamie - i need a spray paint tutorial. do you have one of those? i tried it once and wasn’t very good at it. i know. how can spray painting be hard? that’s what everyone is thinking. i’m always so excited when you show spray paint cams.

Becky - SUPER excited to hear about your new God-sized dream!! I’m working on one myself, partly through your inspiration. Best wishes from Concordia! 🙂

chrissi - i went sugar free 4 weeks ago. i am really surprised how easy it has been you will do great! little things like dashes of cinnamon make my day. i still bake for my family (like i am sure you will too) and it is okay. you can so do this.
….on a side note…julie’s instagrams from africa. melt my heart. pure joy♥

Alicia @ La Famille - You are so fun. We need to hang out and spray paint things.

Tiffany Gardner - Still… after all this time of reading your blog.. your still my favorite. You inspire me through your love of color and Jesus. Thanks for sharing your life with us and encouraging me to live a better one.

Gemma - Please share your summer list! I know as soon as you share it summer is on it’s way : D

Looking forward to hearing your big news!

Gemma x

Necole@seriouslysassymama - I thought about the sugar detox thing. The thing is,I enjoy having sugar every now and again, and i really do not do it in excess. i figured this out when I went on my little food journey last year. Good luck, I am going to eat a doughnut. Just kidding.

Kari - Oooooooohhhh!!! I can’t wait to hear what your big news is!!!

Tiffany - Your parents shopping for you is cute! I’m so curious about these big God plans! So many big adventures have already taken place in your life over the last few years…. I can’t wait to hear what else God has in store for you!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - Your last line CaRacked me up.
You’re so funny.
I miss ye.

Also, thank you.
I mean.
You’re so good to me and all your people.
I was especially surprised to see my giant mug. Ha.

Last thing: Your parents are GOOD!
I am laughing so hard at what my parents would find for me…

Lori H - Meg, when you said that you are working on a God Sized Dream, I wondered if you have read The Circle Maker (by Mark Batterson)? If not, you would love it!!
Good luck with the Sugar Detox! 🙂

– or dreams of owning – a tape recorder

these photos just get me more excited for Mad Men starting THIS sunday!

Northern Cottage - The woman in black admiring the ac unit looks exactly like my sweet mom (oh how I miss her!) she was so classic & stylish . Made tears come to my eyes reading your post & a smile from the stretchy shorts – wow!!

Mindy - I am late to the party (or the post as it be) but adore these ads!! And the strethy shorts – my mom had those! So glad I took time to come back for this post : )

Amy Woods - Advertising works! I’ll take the aqua wall oven and the bright yellow, ribbed double-knit stretch shorts please!!

BethJones - One of my favorite posts, Meg! Love reading your blog but hardly ever comment. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Sarah - I love what you love!!! The aqua oven is the best and I would install one in a heartbeat!

Sara - This is such a fun post! It’s great to get some perspective about how outmoded our gadgets, style and advertising will be in future decades.

April R - That GoodMorning Kiss though! And the fonts! That was fun 🙂 Thanks!

Lisa - Lol.
Don’t get too excited about the guy in the apron. He was smiling at his spouse.
My mom had a maternity dress out of Sears print 32. That’s back when clothes/dresses were cute!
LOVE the phones!

Tiffany - My 5th graders are writing compare and contrast essays about old vs new inventions. The rotary phone and cell phone are fun to read. I can’t help but feel old when I share what it was like to call on a rotary phone.

Jenny B. - I begged and begged for a phone in my room. I really wanted a princess phone with a rotary dial. There was something very satisfying about actually dialing the numbers. I never liked the push-button phones as much. I can still remember the phone number of my best friend down the street and how long it took to dial her number (it had several 8’s and 9’s in it). 🙂

Lynette - What a fun post! I enjoyed it so much!! You really made my day!

Alison - I love this! Old ads are so much fun to look at. I had no idea Sears sold fabric. I remember the Permanent- Pressed tag line. My Grandma had those shorts and I would wear those shoes in a heartbeat! Thanks so much for sharing.

Kerri - I am 55 – these photos are my childhood! lol Can’t wait for the new season of Mad Men, too! Miss all those catalogs: Sears, JC Penney, Montgomery Ward.

Kristin S - That woman on the phone has on 1950’s TOMs!

These were really fun.

Gillian - My parents still have a yellow toilet! An improvement on the previous ‘avocado’ toilets. Here in Ireland it has always been completely normal to have your washing machine in the kitchen, that was until the last few years when we developed notions of grandeur and started making ourselves American style laundry rooms. (It’d still be considered a moral sin to put clothes directly from the washer in to the drier without at least attempted to dry them on the line!)

This is a listing from a similar house to the one I grew up in http://brandnewretro.ie/2013/05/20/9-photos-house-of-the-month-1967-glenbrook-rathfarnham-dublin-14/ it’s a pity there is no colour but I would like to draw your attention the special feature of carpet in the kitchen! In fairness carpeted kitchens are not normal but I’ve been in many a carpeted bathroom – ah nothing like a squelchy carpet bathroom! Nice!

Lisa - These ads are so fun to look at!!! I love love love the dresses in the air conditioning ad. So awesome! Notice how all the advertisements are with white people? Kinda interesting… 🙂 This was a really fun post!

Karie - My dad JUST got rid if his pink toilet, tub and carpet in his bathroom. Still has a pink sink…. Baby steps…

Kimberlee - I will try to tell myself that I am so “Mad Men” whenever I look at my goldenrod counter tops, and if I light up a cig while I’m cooking please tell me I’ve once again taken things too far.

Mags - Had a good laugh over those stretchy shorts. My mom, my aunt, & my grandma ALL had them!!

Mags

Megan - I may have to print that air conditioner one. We are *hopefully* moving into a 1860’s farmhouse that has no air conditioning. In the summer. In Ohio. Ugh. Let’s see if we survive!?!

Alicia @ La Famille - Oh Ms. Meg!!! I love all these. LOVE them. I was totally born in the wrong era. I love their dresses. LOVE!!!

Juli Elgin - As I was reading your blog today I started to click off the computer when I noticed the corner of your banner. I am sure it had been there all along but for some reason it caught my eye today. Phil 4:8 . So I looked it up. Made me SMILE!
Thanks

Chris - Love the pig-latin translation on the Froot-Loops! I remember my mom making us matching caftans in the 70s – lol – caftans!!

Jenni - That Velveeta add? It explains soooo much.

And also, those garage doors would give our HOA an ulcer.

Maureen - Thanks Meg. Those were groovy to look at. I loved your comments too. You really spent time looking at all the details. Especially the kitchen with all the appliances. While i was reading a out that one i was doing a seek and find. Ironing board…check, drying clothes….check:). It was fun. And truly a phone education. I didnt know those things either. My favorite just might be the Fruit Loops ad.

Seriously Sassy Mama - OMG! Those ads.

Sara - I love this! Thanks for sharing! I could get drawn in for hours looking at the ads, too. Oh, how I have missed Don Draper.

Dawn - Oh. My. Goodness. This was all too familiar! I am sixty-one. Remember our phone number as a kid. Oxbow 5-4141 EVERYONE wanted a princess phone when they came out. Bell Telephone gave out princess phone key chains as a promo.
Sheesh. Such trivial information is still stored in my tired brain.
Tape recorded messages were the way we communicated with my uncle and aunt who were missionaries in the orient during the 50s and early 60s. We would gather round the reel to reel tape recorder and listen. (BIG monster of a machine)
I could sing the pepsodent ad. Never mind.
Thanks for prompting the memories.
Lots of fun.

Kirsten J - Love! Hmmm…what did I do with my old magazines?
My brother and his wife rented a gorgeous older house a few years back, in Seattle, overlooking the Sound, from the original owners. So very well kept, and so 50’s. My daughter was 4 and it was so fun to go to Uncle Todd’s house and choose which bathroom to go to the potty…..Yellow? Pink? Turquoise? I always imagined the family picking those out…

Tiffany - @Amanda Hardwick – What is Madmen? You need to call me, Gurl!!! 🙂

Jen - YEAH for Mad Men!! Perfect timing, too! Just as “Parenthood” is ending (on a sour note, stupid Julia!!), we can settle in for the last season (sniff, sniff) of MM!!

Adrienne - This is highly entertaining! Whenever my husband and I were looking at houses, if there was one with the washing machine in the kitchen we would always joke, “See, now you (the wife) never have to leave the kitchen! (Because that’s where women belong, haha).

Meg - I’m pretty sure if I started looking at ads like this on Pinterest it would become a rabbit hole… so I’m not. I’ll just keep coming back here and drooling over these! So much fun! Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade. Ha!

Southern Gal - Wow. That was a book. I wanted to share this post with you – I used one of your photos in it, too, from my Pinterest pin.
http://itwasbroughtonbylove.blogspot.com/2013/07/child-of-60s-and-70s.html

Southern Gal - Thank you for taking this 50-year-old down memory lane!
I made matchy matchy dresses for my daughter and granddaughters out of Lilly fabric for the Carolina Cup and Resurrection Day. Love it.

We had all three of those phones when I was little, too. My favorite was the princess one. Our first phone number was Hemlock + four numbers. Isn’t that wild? I just remembered that.

That gray cabinet looks like an autoclave! Maybe she’s OCD and needs to sterilize everything?

I have one of those 7 Up bottles with a lady in a swimsuit on one side. My son dug it up in our yard years ago. (We live in an area where people used to park in the woods years and years ago.)

Look at that little girl and dog when he really kisses her!

My mama had pink and blue plates like that and pink and blue Corningware to match. She still has a few pieces of it. When I think of all the things they sold at a huge yard sale before moving it makes me shudder. Pictures like this bring back the sweet memories.

Su Soutter - fun post. . .my grandmother’s washer was in the kitchen. And stayed there until my hubby and I moved into her home after she passed away. (1993)

Erica - These are great!!! I love that Velveeta Ad, so funny to think it was considered healthy at one point in time. My washer is in my kitchen and I often did my ironing in my kitchen, it’s pretty common in Europe and Asia. Our last apartment we were blessed to have a dryer, which was in the kitchen, and even though I loved that thing, I thought it was stranger than the washing machine in the kitchen. I guess in small spaces you do what you have to do, but I think I draw the line at hanging laundry up in the kitchen.

Jess - Gosh, this was such a fun post to read! I loved it. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

Amanda Hardwick - Where do I get copies of these ads and what is mad men?

random

hey… how about more random?!

i tried this flat iron tutorial and it worked!

suddenly my straight straight hair has some volume!
and that girl has TONS of hair ideas that i will be checking out…. because i have had short for a long time and feel a little clueless about doing my long hair again.  i had really long hair when annie was born.  9 years ago i said to craig “i think i should cut my hair because i don’t know what to do with it anymore!” and he said “well… you need to do something.”
poor poor craig.
i KNOW for a fact he does not remember that.  or meant it the way i heard it.

——————————————————————————————-

speaking that…. i saw this “story” on someone’s Facebook this morning.

——————————————————————————————-

i am loving these sheets at The Land of Nod.
160512_Kid_Peep_Dot_YE_FU_Sheet_LL
—————————————————————————————————————–

Not that you asked at all…. but i am LOVING for this breakfast every single day!

oatmeal, handful of raisins, handful of unsweetened coconut, some honey and a little almond milk.

EVERY morning.

—————————————————————————————————————–

i tried making this this week too….

coconut-oil-latte-3
and i liked it.
it isn’t like it’s delicious…. but it’s healthy for me so i will drink.

🙂

——————————————————————————————-

Easy-Spinach-Artichoke-Quiche-Cups-3
someone should make these and feed them to me.

——————————————————————————————————————-

kimberlee just gave me this Uber bar.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!
photo-49
i inhaled it.
it is insanely good.
i need a case of these…. now.

Kerry - Megan, I know you love your coffee! Me too! And I cam completely addicted to this: 2 teaspoons coconut oil, 1 t butter, some stevia (or sweetener of choice) and blend in ninja with coffee!! YUMM!! Sometimes I put in protein powder if not in mood to eat or a splash of vanilla! I have not used creamer in months! Let me know if you try it!

melissa - awhile ago Hobby Lobby had fabric that was mustard with small white polka dots – totally snatched some up and made pillow shams for my bed. maybe they still have that fabric?

Emilie - They have those Lara bars at costco (do you have a costco?)they are so yummy. keep trying that coconut oil in your coffee, it will get better!

Sephanie C - Our poor DHs. They mean so well! I have the best guy in the entire world. Seriously. I got the last one of him! But I have to laugh every time I think about what he said about my thighs when we were just months into our marriage: “I love your thighs. They are so soft! Like….pillows”. LOL! He swears it was a good thing–womanly, soft skin, etc. And I was in GREAT shape at that point.

Coconut macaroons are my fave. I’ll have to try those!

Mags - I can’t believe I’ve never thought of throwing coconut shreds into my oatmeal! I eat oatmeal every single day, usually with walnuts & raisins. Sometimes dried fruit….except coconut!

Guess what I’m having in my oatmeal on Monday morning?
Thanks for showing me the should-have-been obvious!

Mags in Kansas

april r - I read the link too – HA! my poor poor dh James…

and I’m glad I’m not the only one who eats the same thing for breakfast every day and is totally content with that. Oatmeal, coffee, water 🙂 happy

gotta go clean my room now. gonna listen to Andy Stanley’s Ask it while I make things nice for the weekend (and for my poor dh…boy, I need to lighten up!)

Laura - i admit to never clicking on links on blog posts…however, i have been home sick with nothing but free time, so…..i clicked on that story on fb…
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

pure genius.

when Nick and I were dating, I was in the bathroom putting on make up and he came in and said “that’s how I like you to look.”
WHAT????????

He swears he just meant he liked the way I did my make up.
Of course in my own 24 year old mind I thought “He thinks I am HIDEOUS without make up!!!”

our men.
so simple.
so clueless.
but so awesome.

miss you!

Jessica - are you still doing 21 Day Fix? I am on Day 4 and wondering what you thought about it? Results? Meal ideas?

mrsodendaal - I make mini baseless quiches like that for my husband for breakfast, i use 1 1/2- 2 eggs per muffin cup, fill the cups with chopped bacon( or what leftover meat there is in the fridge ) and sliced bell peppers and chesse and pour the eggs on sprinkle with salt , pepper and paprika n bake till the egg is cooked through, He likes how easy they are to grab and heat for a quick breakfast or take with him for an easy lunch. do be sure to grease the muffin pan well or use silicone ones

Jenny B. - I’ve watched a few of the hair girl’s videos before, and they are kind-of mesmerizing. 🙂 She has SUCH great hair. For me, it’s kind-of like watching people do aerobics. I could get up and attempt to do all the stuff they’re doing, but I would look like a major dork. If that analogy didn’t make sense, I’m basically saying that my hair just will not behave like hers no matter what I do. 🙂

My husband has been making some little crustless quiche dishes lately, and they are SO good. He makes them in the little corningware dishes (sort-of like ramekins, but closer to cereal bowl size). Anyway, my favorite is egg, sausage, cheese, and spinach. It’s great with fruit salad (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and bananas). He also did one with egg (obviously), chicken and asparagus. He used rotisserie chicken from Walmart. It was really good. We had it for dinner. Yum. Now I’m hungry. 🙂

Carrie - I just ran to my kitchen with that drink idea but as I reached into my k-cup jar I decided to try it with green tea. You’re right, it isn’t delicious but it’s not bad. I jazzed it up with a splash of almond milk and a couple shakes of cinnamon. I’d make it again!

Laura Oyler - I eat WAY too many lara uber bars!! You should definitely try the Dark Chocolate Turtle and Dark Chocolate Peanut! They are my favs. Roasted Nut Roll is good too 🙂 I tried the sticky bun one once…..yucky.

Dee - I really love that flavor of Lara bar! And those sheets….LOVE!

Kristin S - And Kate (hair tutorial) is a wonderful person in real life. It’s funny to see this video from so long ago. “So long ago” in blog world, that is.
