lucky.  (said in my best napoleon dynamite voice)

it was beautiful and calm and peaceful out there…other than the five kids.
but i have five kids so i don't even hear that sound any more.

i think every family needs this picture.

and this is my favorite.
the chaos around them…the laughing…i know what this is like…this is like my house!
(you have to click on it to see the details)

Sheryl

elizabeth - You really are such an incredible photographer — ever think about coming out to Los Angeles? Do you ever photograph families that have a child with special needs?

Jessie - All are beautiful. You are so talented. I especially loved the last two–the final one choked me up–a full house in love. Love your blog.

Amy at The Red Chair Blog - These photos are fantastic. Love the 2nd to last one of the faces in a circle.

jody - Oh, I thought the same thing (as Laura)!!!
What a beautiful family and such good chaos!
I just had my 4th…and I am nearly 40…plus I nurse for a long time…which would put me at say 41 or 42 if we did #5…oh, and people are already asking my husband if he’s our kid’s grandpa! Yikes!!! But still, just when I thought we were “done”…those thoughts have been haunting me!
Exciting, not knowing what God has in store…it’s always good to be open to possibility I suppose!
I do just love this blog, Meg…and so excited about my little pillow purchase!
jody

andrea - great job, i love the last two, i wish someone would take some pics of us like that

casey - I LOVE the black and white picture of the family laying down. Very artistic and timeless! Great eye on all of these. They are precious!

Allikayes Mama - I love that last one!!! I am coming to KS so you can take our pics! I think it would only be like 4 hours?! Not bad!! :0)

Kathy - great family picts! I love the last two really special.

Sharla - I love the family pic of them from above

Renee - Gorgeous pictures. Thanks for sharing. I came from a family of six, and never thought I’d have a family of my own (5). The chaos. Oh, the chaos. Someday it won’t be there and I’m sure I’ll miss it like crazy. I, too, have noticed people around us expanding their brood beyond the “nuclear” 2.5 kids. Safety in numbers, I guess! LOL xoxo

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - I LOVE the last 2 pictures. You are sooooo good. I love how you actually capture the hearts of your subjects.

Heather - Wow, what a treasury of photographs! The last picture brought tears to my eyes, it was just perfect and I don;t even know these people! They look so very, very happy and I am happy for them.

Sandy Toes - what cute kids!

Rebekah - At least the snake was dead! I love the last picture.

Jocelyn Stott - Beautiful photos and beautiful family.

Laura Phelps - Chaos? Where? Isn’t this what everybody’s day looks like???
I met a mom at the pediatrician yesterday…she had 6 kids.
And suddenly, my 4 seemed like not enough.
But then I remembered.
Remembered how CRAZY the 4th baby made me. Truly insane. Have lost my mind.
And then this morning I see THIS.
Beautiful children.
FIVE of them.
And I am thinking those scary thoughts…
“Five IS a great number…”

i am off to the post office to ship every Etsy order i got…except amy jupin's.
i still need to make your gumball tee.

happy monday.

donna - I have a friend (Sundrenched Moments) that sent me this blog of yours last year because she knew I love, love, love sunflowers. I go to it often to get a sunflower fix. Earlier this months I had the opportunity to go to Topeka for work and I asked where I could see some sunflowers. I was told to go west to Junction City and I should see some. I didn’t see any! I want to see a field where you see sunflowers that go on forever. If I have the opportunity next year to go back can you suggest to me where I can see a field of them?~donna

Amy @ Living a Blessed Life - Just found your blog from a new friend’s sight. So glad she linked to yours. Your photos are incredible!!! You sure have a gift with the lens. I gave my husband the link as he loves photography as well and loves to learn from others’ perspective.
Sweet blessings,
Amy in OR

Jodi - I absolutely love your photos, you are so talented~!! Your blog and photography is delightful!

Elisa - The thought of you running through the sunflowers topless brought a smile to my face 🙂
But seriously- those pictures rocked! Great job!

Sarah - Oh wow! They are gorgeous. I live in the city and would have to drive far, far away to see something like that, if it even exists in VA. I have never had a desire to visit the Midwest until reading your blog. The fields are beautiful. Can’t get that on the East Coast.
Thanks for sharing!!!

Magchunk - Just want to tell you how much I looooove your blog. I seriously just read the whole thing in only a few days, laughed out loud, cried (I’m as bad as you on the weepy thing), and printed out many recipes. And I made my man read (ok, he only made it a few months, but he usually reads techy blogs, so it was a start) and he’s obsessed with Waffle.
Would you do me a huge favor and email me (maggie {at} magchunk.com)? I would love to do a little Q&A on my blog, magchunk.com.
<3 Maggie

a promise

i promised talby a photo shoot…with her pettiskirt and pigtails.

i picked a field that was full of queen anne's lace and wildflowers.
then it rained and rained all week.
one evening when it was clear we took off..20 minutes past when i was hoping.
we stopped for balloons….another part of the promise.
the woman at the floral counter was……..S.L.O.W.
we first asked for 10 balloons but settled on 6 because she was soooooo SLOW.
then we went to the car and two popped…because she'd over filled them.
but we were losing light so we left with 4.
we drove the 10 minutes to the perfect field….
and it had been mowed down.
we drove on to find another but could not find wildflowers
so we settled for corn and the sunset.
then another balloon popped.

and yet….the pictures are still lovely.

i want to skip in a field with a poofy skirt too.
i really do.

these girls are my everyday.
i love them.
i love being their mom.
i love our everydays.

especially the days that we end up in field with (only) 3 balloons at sunset.

carol sue schoenfeld - Hi, Meg! I just love your pictures of the sunflowers at my “ole home” in Peabody! Wished we’d had those sunflowers when I was growing up, as they would have totally enriched my life, although I loved the wheat and still have some in our home in Manhattan Beach, Ca. Love the pictures of your absolutely darling children! They are the cutest, hanging out in the sunflowers! Thanks for stopping by. Carolyn called me yesterday to tell me about your blog and Becky is here visiting us now and we are loving and chatting about your exquisitely beautiful pictures!! Enjoy!!

Wendell Gard - Meg: Wonderful pictures and a great web site. Thank you for posting the sunflower pictures. Carolyn is my sister-in-law. She told me about the sunflowers and of people stopping by to look and or photograph them. I live in Oklahoma and would have not been able to see them had you not posted them here. The house next to the field is the one my brother Jon and sister Carol were raised in. Jon and Carolyn decided to move back there several years ago and make it their home. The three of us were adopted from different families but wer so fortunate to be raised in a home full of love and Christian values. Before the highway was re-routed around the north side of the house, there was a grove of mulbary trees where they imported silkworms to make silk. There is some samples and additional history at the public library. Our family homesteaded that land in 1865 after leaving Gard’s Point, Illinois, traveling by covered wagon to that location.
Your photography is just great, so keep your camera handy at all times. I carry my still camera and a video camera wherever I go and have obtained some outstanding photos and videos.

Patty - Perfect.

Kate - i love everything about this. have been “stalking” your blog since Baby Cora (we must have some mutal friends somewhere along the line). i love it and check it almost every day. love your photos, your creativity, your house, your dog, your stories, your new porch living room, your family.
-love the one of Talby in the chair looking up at the balloons.
-love that you brought a chair to the field. genius idea.
-love that poofy pink skirt. i would have been beside myself over that skirt when i was a kid. BESIDE MYSELF. I was obsessed with skirts that twirled and shoes that “clacked”.
-love the balloons
-love the magic hour light
-love the whole idea
love you share so much of yourself, your talents and your world with the blogosphere for “stalkers” like me to enjoy and be inspired by.
Nice to “meet” you!
kate

Melissa - The skirts are adorable – I was also wondering if you made annie’s and if so what pattern was it (we are big time into skirts at my house)

I would really like to see that.

Steph @ Problem Solvin Mom - How heartwarmingly perfect, even though it wasn’t what you planned!

Ashley - Precious!

misty - these are great! I wish I wasn’t all the way in Oklahoma!

Elisa - Oh Meg these are perfect!

Kathy - Now that is a perfect Mommy day in my book! Noticed the teen wasn’t there? I would have to rent a few kids to do that my teen would die of embarrassment ….I mean what if some one saw her! Great photos! Your girls are so adorable.

Kelly - Captivating shots! I just found your blog, and scrolled through the pictures of your house (incredible, by the way!). I have a question about all the amazing trim in the house… because our new home also has incredible oak woodwork everywhere, and I’m not sure about painting it. I really love crisp, white trim, but am concerned about painting the windows shut, and also about leaving some oak and some white.
Just interested in your process:-)

Aubrey - those are sweet pictures. and sweet girls. you’re such a cool mom. apparently i’ve been such a bad one–much worse than usual–my daughter asked my husband if i could move away.

it was a bit breezy…
flips flops on little kids is just plain CUTE.

i have a confession.
I HAVE GUILT.
emily…dustin…i am sorry.
i took them to the parked train cars for pictures….AND THE POLICE CAME!!
and every time i look at these pictures i feel extreme guilt for possibly being unsafe.
i don't think we were…3 adults within arms length of these boys the entire time…nothing moving.
no trains coming.
really nothing to feel any concern at the time…other than the cops!
but still.
i have guilt.
i was trespassing!
but the pictures are cute…that helps ease my guilt a little.

2009 BlogLuxe Awards  i love all the votes….thank you…you are THE BEST!!

***********************************************************************************************************

Amy at The Red Chair Blog - Love these photos! Those cops had no imagination.

Traci - so adorable. whoops. don’t the police in your town have any bigger criminals to chase. the photos are well worth the chewing out.

Melanie - Those are two of the cutest little boys I have ever seen. And this is coming from the mom of two boys herself. (OK, so they’re now 18 and almost-21 so they’re not so cute anymore, lol.)

Lisa K in FL - I am so glad you broke the law – these were worth it. I’m driving my 4 youngin’s up to Kansas so you can take their pictures. Ok? 🙂

Missi R - Megan – Your pictures are incredible! I have to get a hold of you – I want you to take my kids’ pictures. I don’t know how you do all that you do – you are superwoman for sure.

Sarah - adorable

Heather - Cops or not- These pictures are AMAZING!!!!!!!!! They were worth trespassing for! WOW!!! Great Job!!!!!
And the puddle pics are adorable too………even though the girls have gone prissy! LOL!!
Heather:)

amy bell - i have TWO boys who would love for you to come and take their picture!!!!! oh..i think those pictures are wonderful.

Kathy - Love the pictures of the brothers they are so cute!!

Jennifer Wilson-Miller - oh I have 2 boys and saw these pictures on your blog and just have to comment. They are SO adorable, and you captured the Brother looks SO well!!

Secret Mom Thoughts - They are adorable boys. Great shots. Let the guilt go about the trains. They were safe.

Joanna - Oh those pictures are SO worth almost getting arrested. ;0)

Amy Walker - Great pictures Megan, what cute boys!

Amber - Doesn’t look like they minded. Gorgeous! You are such a wonderful photographer – may I ask what type of lighting you used for the ones on the train tracks.. is it just natural light or a reflector or a flash? WOuld you mind mentioning it in another post? Congrats on the Eye Candy votes. You sure are!

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Those pics were worth getting busted for. Great job:)

andrea liese - what one will do for a pic, they look great

Starnes Fam - Brothers holding hands is so very sweet. My middle child is a train lover. He would have been thrilled! Cops or not.

Staci - Ahhh…sweet brothers 🙂 What cuties! BUT…boys….in flip flops…aren’t EVER as graceful as girls in flip flops!!! I sware, little girls can wear flip flops the minute they can walk…boys…it takes awhile to get it down!!! Or at least with mine, it did 🙂 But I do love it…there’s almost nothin’ cuter…except leggins…on girls of course, not boys 😉

Cate O'Malley - They’re all great, but I especially love the one with the little boy looking up at his big brother – awesome!

Lori Danelle - Haha. You just need to be a bit sneakier about which tracks you choose to photograph on!
Super cute though! And probably even better simply BECAUSE of you brush with the law.
http://loridanelle.blogspot.com

Kate - Meg, I am so sorry they came and gave you a hard time! Ugh! The pictures are great! I know the parents will love them forever!!

lilyhaven - I looooooove the train track pictures. You will cherish those always. What beautiful boys.

Vera - Great pictures! Hmmm… I was talking my photographer friend the other day, and she was asking me about taking pictures on railroad tracks, because she had heard it’s illegal (and I’m a lawyer and supposedly should know about stuff like this). I had no idea, and like a dufus told her I was sure it was fine. Are the tracks owned by the railroad companies, that so it’s trespassing? Is that what they told you?

Michelle - Great pictures! Your blog has inspired me to start my own!

Julia - it was worth it.

jessica leigh - i LOVE red doors and railroad tracks to shoot at.
those are great!

Courtney - My 6 six year old just looked over my shoulder and said “Oh no!” about the train tracks… you’re really lucky! They could have arrested and/or fined you! Seriously!

Emily D. - The railroad pictures are my favorite so I am not sorry for trespassing in the least. I love the pictures they are great!

Ruth - oh my gosh… these are perfect!! what cuties.

Anne - These pictures are adorable!!! oh my goodnesss, so cute.

Ashley Ann - GREAT PICTURES! You seemed to have really captured the fun aspects of brotherhood…love this session…even the trespassing 🙂

Shannon Kirtley - Well…hopefully uou will get to take some pictures of another set of brothers soon!! We did set a date for this baby, Aug. 21. So, if you would be willing to take newborn pics of him soon after, I would love it!

Amber - Those boys are too cute! I love how they seem to really like each other too, you know? All such adorable pictures.

Stacy Killion - I am in love with the train track photos! I need to do a shoot like this with my boys…I have some tracks and parked train cars just right up the road. Hmmm…:-)

Sara - I just went out there and voted for you.. it looks like you’re winning! Yea!!

Theadora - So cute! I don’t know if you are like my me, but it must have been a “little” exhilirating to do those photos while trespassing ( wink , wink)…seriously though, those boys are way cute!!! LOVE it!

Dana M. - MY BOYS!!! (ok they aren’t really mine, but I’m their favorite aunt and they are at my house ALL the time) Great pics! My favorite is the one with them laughing. That is SO them! Megan, can’t wait until our photo session with my girls!!

kansas

yeah…we're in the middle of nowhere.

yeah…we don't have oceans or mountains or starfish

yeah…we are full of rednecks.
yeah…we don't have any movie stars here.

BUT it is beautiful here.
June in Kansas is my favorite time of year.

on the radio in my car was "We're from the Country"
how fitting.

now…if i knew what anything about farming…that would be even cooler!

************************************************************************

2009 BlogLuxe Awards   don't forget to vote today…you rocked it yesterday!

*****************************************************************************************

totally random…i just walked by sean's room… he is in there playing legos alone…singing Joy to the World…as loud as he can.

funny.

Lori - Those pics could be from my family farm! I’m now a city girl in the East and I do miss the wide open spaces in SW Kansas! The best sunsets and the golden waves of grain are truly breathtaking!

erin - I live in Kansas! Born and raised. It gets boring sometimes but I have lots of green space around me, No horrible traffic, nice people that wave at you when you are driving even if they don’t know you, a house that I could never afford anywhere else, good schools and great neighbors. Wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Pansy Cottage Girl - Just had to comment about this. I’ve lived in southern California my entire life,43 years. I’ve worked in the movie business and I know a lot of people. But here in so-cal. Everything is so contrived. People aren’t real and you HAVE to lock your doors and car. We have a lot of traffic, the cost of living is rediculous and its a real challenge to instill family values in your kids when everyone is so concerned about what they wear & drive. I’m sure some areas have a sense of community but I dont have it for my kids. I’m a very outgoing person and I find it really hard to make meaningful relationships. I would move to the heartland in a hot minute if I could.

Ashley Crenshaw - Oooh! I’m so happy I found your blog (via The Inspired Room’s Melissa)!! I was born and raised in Kansas and now live in Colorado. It’s so nice to be reminded of my roots and how much I still love it there. Thank you for the beautiful pictures. Seriously, Kansas is awesome!

chasity - love how you captured the spirit of the midwest in these photos…they are fantastic!
chas

Sara - I want to learn to take pictures like this…amazing.
I love Kansas too. It’s dreamy.

Heather Richter - Just moved here…you captured it perfect. Love the sunsets here.

Cheryl Enlow - It looks so beautiful!

sandy toe - Wonderful pictures!
sandy toe

katy - I hear ya….it is beautiful!!! We are one of your neighboring states (OK) we live about 30 min. from the Kansas border.
I love looking at the wheat fields, I can see them from almost any window in our house.
Very nice pics you took!!

Traci - great photos. cuttin’ wheat – i love that time of year. we won’t be doing that until the mid to end of July. you need to be taking photos at the old farm. awesome.

Karen - Stop. STOP! You’re giving my WI dairy-farmer-husband, CROP-ENVY!
Still…beautiful. Just beautiful. TFS.

Staci - You can make a picture of a truck look incredible 🙂 I love that Sean was playing Legos…alone….and I LOVE that he was singing Joy to the World 🙂 Gonna go vote!

Kelly - Thank you for the beautiful photos. I’ve lived in Iowa and miss is so much.

Meta - hello,
here a message from a lurker in the Netherlands (so excuse me for my english and where the corn in the fields has not yet grown higher than 30 centimeters! yours is so high already!)
you have a great blog and make even greater pictures!
you’re an inspiration!
after years of being busybusybusy with everything and everyone around me I came here to read and saw your creative powers…..
yeah! I remembered I have those powers too and was in shock when I realised I did not work with them for way to long!
shame on me!
so I digged up my creative stuff/ cleared out my craftroom and YESYESYES!
me happy!
thank you!
and keep on blogging, I love to read it!

Keri - These are lovely. Starfish and oceans are great, but there is something to be said about wide open spaces! Kansas looks beautiful!

jolyn - I am officially homesick now. “You can take a girl out of Kansas….”
(I recently discovered you, but this is my first comment:)

Amber - I’ve been living on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland almost all my life and I never thought I could move to a middle-of-the-country state where all the land is flat. I am surrounded by mountains, ocean, reservoirs, bays, cities, etc. I would feel trapped in those middle states. Lol. But you sure make it beautiful with those pics!!

Erin - You captured the Midwest beautifully! I love living in the Midwest – don’t think I could ever leave!

Jenn - beautiful. hoping to see it in person some day!

Angela Henrie - I love farms. I wish I grew up on one. There’s a little patch in the middle of my town that still grows corn. I get so excited to see it growing. I hope they never develop that land – it would be a horrible day for me!

gina entz - I LOVE Kansas too. I’m always telling Ryan how beautiful Kansas is. And he always tells me I’m preaching to the chior. Great pics!

Rach - Yes, but you have summer thunderstorms that leave that sweet smell of wet grass when they are done; you have fire flies to run and catch in big glass jars with holes in the lid; you have clear skies not plagued with smog; and you have quiet summer suburb nights where you can leave the windows open and only hear the sounds of crickets. Kansas is a good place to live and your kids are your very own movie stars that you worship and adore. 🙂

Becky @ Farmgirl Paints - Nothing like the Midwest. I love it. GORGEOUS pictures!!

sarah keith - yes…it is a lovely state! I enjoyed seeing all the combines “workin’ it” out in the field. I’ve never been in June–usually in late fall-winter. No oceans-No starfish—but what you have is a mean sunset across a wheatfield!

Meredith - I can see why you love it so much. These photos could easily be mistaken for rural Australia. There is a quiet, calm beauty all of its own that sort of steals its way around your senses. Meg, these photos are simply beautiful.
Do you do “best part/worst part” of your day with your kids at the dinner table? One of my “best” parts yesterday was your lovely comments on my blog – I felt really encouraged – thanks for being so generous. Meredith xo.

Kristine Robb - what you do mean no celebrities?! you have DOROTHY!! 🙂

Vera - That’s funny, we both did similar posts today about our little neighboring states 🙂

rachel - Lovely picures – Kansas tourist board should hire you, you’d soon have the tourists flocking there 😀

Karina - Kansas certainly looks beautiful, I’ll have to visit one day. Your blog got my vote!

Kelly - Your pictures are great! I love your “amber waves of grain” shot!

Gram - Love Kansas, my parents met and married in Kansas, both my sisters were born there, my best friend in the world was born and raised there.

angela - Amazing pictures…love them! I grew up on a farm in Ohio and I miss it and that life whenever I see photos of corn, wheat, sunsets, tractors, etc…
Thanks for all the inspiration.

Kathy - Never been to Kansas but your pictures are beautiful so Kansas must be too.

Anne - You take seriously the most “lively” pictures! I love the one with the cows the best.

ali - You must be a photographer…i just came across your blog yesterday and can’t even remeber how…too much random time at work! But I had to ask what kind of camera you have. I know it’s mostly skill but your pictures jump off the page! they are amazing! i love them!!

Deva84 - OMG! Absolutely amazing blog! Just brilliant! Feel so warm to be here!
Have a lovely day!
Deva

Liana - Just voted. I love cake wrecks too, but you win, no contest!
GREAT pics, by the way. You really have a talen for finding beauty in everyday!

Cate O'Malley - Beautiful pictures! Would love to live in the country, but in the meantime, will happily live vicariously through your blog. 🙂

Anna Marie - ummm….you do have totally awesome fields of sunflowers! the first time my husband showed me a field of sunflowers just on the other side of the missouri/kansas border i was in awe! do you have any near you? if so…you have GOT to take pictures. those fields plus your photo skillz equals awesomeness…no joke 😉
love
anna marie

andrea liese - your lucky, i am in CA and can’t wait to leave to a more simple life, i love the pics

Ruth - It looks so beautiful. I would move to the middle of nowhere anyday if I could!

Amy - I spent my summers with my grandparents in Eureka so these pics bring back incredible summer memories. Also now craving the tastiness that is corn picked from the field then served with freshly caught fish.

Nina - Meg – those cows look like they are posing for you!

AnNicole@OurSuburbanCottage - Absolutely beautiful. I actually drove from Oklahoma to Kansas City in the spring, and I marveled at how beautiful the fields were. It had been raining, so everything was grey and vivid green. Amazing…

Meredith Salmon - Meg,
I am really inspired by your blog. Your photos are amazing and I can not wait every day to see what you have posted. I am a working mother of two boys (5yrs and 7 months). I have the same camera you do and love taking pictures of my family. I would love to know more about how you alter or enhance your photos. They are beautiful and vibrant. I would love to know more about your photos of families. I know you get a lot of this but you are an inspiration. God Bless.

Tracy - LOVE the pictures and the song on the radio is one of my favs considering the fact that I actually am from the Country – Arkansas to be exact! HA! Have a great weekend, Meg! :o)

pve - makes me wish I was in Kansas, right now wearing no shoes and sporting overalls.

Dina - oh my, it is beautiful! thanks for sharing!!

Melanie - Your photos are breathtaking. Love ’em.

Gretchen - I was just stuck in a traffic jam on the 101 Freeway in Hollywood while I was taking my son to a playdate. Came home, opened this and started to cry! Man, would I rather be walking through a cornfield!

Sharla - These are all so great – although I see these things around me, they just seem prettier when someone else points them out.

Starnes Fam - The Midwest is a lovely place to live and since I’m only in week 7, I’m still discovering all of it. Happy to be here! Beautiful pictures, as always.

Trish - holy cow your corn is so tall compared to ours in Michigan! I voted for you yesterday… I’ll go vote again 🙂

Dani - Beautiful pictures! I want to take pictures like that!
Going to vote… as I have done everyday since you posted about the award!

Heather @ Cookie Mondays - holy moly! you are killin the competition! you rock, meg(an)!

valerie - BEAUTIFUL! The pictures of the wheat are just gorgeous!

Jo - Meg,
The 3rd picture is definitely beautiful 🙂 Good eye, good eye. I see that stuff all the time living in Texas, but I don’t like to be stereotyped as a ‘redneck’, just not my cup of tea. Yes, we have TONS of cowboys/girls here, but i’m not one! It’s neat to see though, I think personally. The pictures are fab. *RUNNING TO VOTE*

purejoy - y’know? i think kansas has some pretty sexy wheatfields. your pictures are lovely. eye candy! is that queen anne’s lace? if it is, i’m in love. even if it’s not. . . i’m still in love.

Ambre - Wow, I never thought anyone could make me miss Kansas…but I LOVE that 3rd pic!
