wednesday list

1.  wicket has taken a big space in our hearts over here.  she is a total spaz.  she leaps and jumps all over the place and she is fast!  everyone loves her so much already.

IMG_2890

2.  i miss making things.  it's been forever.  i am just so busy.  that is the dumbest excuse.  i need to just do it.  no plan.  nothing… just start.  because it is what makes me feel the most like myself.

IMG_2960

3.  i am reading The Help.  i am not an awesome reader that pours through books and can't put them down…  but it is growing on me.  and i will be honest that i actually love that i have seen the movie so i can hear the voices in my head as i read it.  i can hear emma stone's low gritty voice.  i am pretty sure that is the opposite of what "real readers" say when reading a book that has been turned into a movie.  oh well.   i think i am finally outgrowing my A.D.D. or at least stablizing a lot more which is why i can read more than i could in the past.  but i am not a doctor so really who knows what the deal is!

IMG_2969

4.   i mentioned again about the sky during talby's ball game last night to her and she said "I KNOW! it's like so beautiful every single night!"  she is right.  kanasas just seems to ROCK OUT in june!

IMG_2952

it was blinding but so pretty!!!  half cloudy.  half storm blowing in.  scorching hot.  sun setting.  it was just lovely.

5.  my friend kerry is a garage sale queen.  she finds all the good stuff!  look what she has found for me!

 IMG_2958

that means more awesome maps coming soon to the SHOP!!

YAY!!

6.  i get the night off so i am going to go enjoy some quiet time A L O N E.  i am quite ready for that.

Bree - I read the book after seeing the movie as well…and was SO GLAD I did! The book was better but having seen the movie helped it be even better since I was able to “see” and “hear” the characters. Glad to know I’m not the only one!

Sarah @Professional Doctorates - Wicket is so adorable. I can imagine that you guys just love that kitty to bits and pieces. I have fallen into a crafty funk lately as well. I just have not had the time to really create things. I miss it.

Jenny B. - I am the same way about books made into movies. I didn’t read any of the Harry Potter books until after I saw the first two movies. I loved that the movies did the hard work for me. πŸ™‚ I love the audio versions of those books, too. It’s like watching the movies, only better since you get the whole story. πŸ™‚ Anyway… not sure if you’re a Harry Potter fan, but just thought I’d share how I relate. Have fun with all those maps! You should use a few to make something for yourself. πŸ™‚

misty tharp - would it be possible to get the cow print in a special listing in a 16×20?

Lisa - I LOVE Wicket! I just love orange kitties. We just got a new kitten for my son (no, really, it’s supposed to be his kitten!) and he is just so much fun to watch and to play with. Even my husband who proclaims to not like cats, can’t help but pick up the kitten and snuggle with it – I have proof – I took a picture of him while the kitten was snuggled up to his neck and they were both sleeping. πŸ™‚ I love our Kansas skies, too! And watching them while sitting at the ballpark watching our son play ball is just some great summer fun. And I know what you mean about “needing” to create – I just found a free coloring sheet online of a beautiful design and I can hardly wait to get home tonight (after the ballgames) and get out my colored pencils!

Tracy - I loved The Help. If you’re going to read a book, that’s the one to read! Stick with it!!
Excited to see the new maps in the shop.
Hope you ENJOYed your evening!!

Jodi - I do the EXACT same thing with books! I love reading them after I see the movie. The Help was one of my favorites to read that way!

Kelly MB - Another Kansan here who is often amazed by the sky, especially when storms are rolling in! I am an avid reader… as in I read just about every single day. I am currently reading the Harry Potter books for the first time, after seeing all of the movies, and I agree.. because I did it in this order I can see and hear the characters much more clearly. When I read a book first and then watch the movie I am often disappointed that the characters are not how I pictured them in my head. And it never bothers me that the ending has been spoiled!

Dena - Enjoy ” The Help”. I loved the book; read that first, but was disappointed some in the movie as there is so much they didn’t include.

Lisa - Hi Meg, I rarely comment here because you get SOOO many that is seems like it would just get lost in the shuffle, BUT….don’t feel bad about your “ADD!” As a mother for 23 years so far, I believe you’ve just been too busy and distracted to fully concentrate on books. As with your crafting, reading is my outlet and when I am happiest. As my kids have gotten older I feel like I enjoy reading EVEN more. And even though I’m still “mothering” in some way every single day (my youngest is home from college for the summer), I truly treasure the escape that reading gives me. I’ll bet you will start to read more as the kids get older……

Valerie @ Chateau a la mode - Hope your enjoy your alone time. Maybe you will make something πŸ˜‰

Kori - Loved The Help…in book and movie form. Reading is my favorite. πŸ™‚

Rach - I’m with you on #2. I have a 2 and a 4 year old. I can’t even sew a hem without being interrupted. πŸ™‚

Tiffany - 1) Who wouldn’t love that adorable face! Oh my. I need to find myself a kitten stat. Just to play with, not bring home. I’m pretty sure my hubby might kill me if I bring another cat home.
2)I’ve been using my kids’ nap/resting time in the afternoons to create recently. Mostly little things to decorate for my future sister-in-law’s wedding shower this weekend. I’ve made 3 different kinds of bunting. I blame you. I never heard of bunting before you! It’s fun creating!
3)I’m self proclaimed ADD too! It was always tough for me to focus on something like reading when I was younger too. Finally managing it well as an adult. If you like funny, check out Jennifer Lancaster’s memoirs. Laugh out loud funny!
4)That sky! Are you kidding me?! That’s amazingly beautiful! As you post about beautiful Kansas weather it has me cursing my ancestors that decided to hunker down in Minnesota.
5)Love me a good garage sale! Lucky you to have a friend help you out that way!

CathyC - That sky is incredible. It looks like a piece of heaven.

Kerri - I loved reading the The Help! Since I am a teacher, reading for pleasure has to wait until the summer! On my list to read is Bread and Wine and Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist, Kisses from Katie, Sparkly Green Earrings and A Little Salty to Cut The Sweet. That Kansas sky is gorgeous! I see an angel with her wings when I look at it!

Rhonda - Meg..
I wanted to tell you that I used your idea of a shaving cream battle at my son’s ‘end of 2nd grade’ class party. It was amazing. (I got the idea from one of your posts last summer.)I am guilty of using ideas , and never following up with giving thanks to those who deserve it! So Thank You! I love your blog.. thank you for sharing your many talents. Take Care
Rhonda
This is what the teacher wrote about the party.
Thank you to all of you who turned out for the incredible last day party! If you came, I am sure you are glad you did! I can say unequivocally that I have NEVER seen children have so much fun!!! That is spoken by one who has taught for 28 years (and had 3 sons)! Not ever: it was unrestrained joy! Every child experienced it. It was interesting to watch some children hold back for a while, and finally they couldn’t stand it, and joined in the fun.
I truly wish we could start the school year with such an experience. The children were all BFF’s by the end of the shaving cream extravaganza!

Heather Simnitt - The Help is one of my favorite books ever. Read it in less than 48 hours…and if I recall it’s like 500 pages, so that’s a lot of reading while I’m supposed to be training up some kids. I even invited their friends over to spend the night so they’d all be happy together and let me alone to finish reading it. Sick, huh?
And you are so right, the sunsets in Kansas are the most amazing I have seen in all the places we’ve been. Homegrown Kansas sunsets are the BEST!

Katie - I made the white chocolate mint Oreo dreamy creation from your Monday post with my kids this morning…it was ready by afternoon snack time. It is awesome! Thanks!

Terrie - I loved ‘The Help’! Hope you enjoy it as much.
I can’t start a book unless I have the time to finish.
I’m a read until it’s finished kind of person.
I try to stretch it out…I’m really trying. πŸ™‚

tere - Sounds like a great Wednesday. And I have that Target purse…I mean bag…I love the color and all, but I don’t know, I can’t find a darn thing in it. Enjoy your alone time. xoxo

Janelle - I actually took the two maps I bought from your shop to the framers today! Beautiful white wood frame with burlap matte – can’t wait!

Allison - You could try listening to audio books while you craft or clean. I often listen to them (or podcasts) when I am working on my artwork and it is a great alternative to music. Most of the voices are excellent and add a whole new dimension to the story. I download them online and put them on my ipod, so it is super convenient (most libraries have a great selection as well). Hope this helps! Happy reading!

moo.

so… i live in small town with no clothing stores.
and then if i go to where i used to live 10 minutes away, there is a walmart & a few places to shop for clothes.
we have no target.
no malls.
no GAP.
no starbucks.

and somehow…. i am still alive.
πŸ™‚

it's a 30 minute drive to get to those things and really that is no biggie at all.

what i do have in my halfway biggish town that is 10 minutes from my house is Dress Barn.

i hardly ever go there.
and then when i do…. i always find stuff!
it's tricky.
there is a lot to navigate that is too "mature woman" for me.
and there is a lot of…. ruffles where there shouldn't be?
and denim jackets with rhinestones.
in a bad way.
and racks and racks FULL of mom jeans.

but i am telling you… it's worth a peek if you have time to shop with no children.

so today i will walk you though my shopping experience at the Dress Barn (moo)

(WHO named that store???? it's HORRID!)

i tried on this one.
it looks like it's coral zebra stripey fabic but it's actually seperate little layers of fabric.
too bulky on my curvy frame.
and looked too old on me.

101393017_615

when i shop… i am committed.
i bring in A TON of clothes to the dressing room and try on ANYTHING i may remotely like.
i find this method to be productive when trying to shop without children.
maximizing my time.
if you don't like shopping for clothes… you definitely don't want to go with me.
i fully admit that i take forever.

101399326_463

they didn't have this one in my size.
sad face.
i liked it a lot and would've probably gotten it…it's classic.
but i would need a strapless bra and that is not a favorite of mine… but may still be worth it.

101342233_700

not my size in this one either.
boo.
it looks so comfy!

101380782_101

not my size.
but i know it would be too low cut and too much focus on the hips for me with that v-ncek.

101424393_300

maxi dresses are always teetering on the line of cute and Mrs. Roper.
this one expecially.
a good maxi dress is hard to find if you are not a long skinny stick lady.

but if you are then i bet you'd look amazing in that!
you should also get a huge black sun hat.
and send me a picture.

101368765_600

this is a nice churchy dress.
it was not red it was orangey.
so orangey that i actually didn't even try it on.
i took it in but just couldn't do that color on me…. i knew i wouldn't want to look at it against my skin.

101320963_802

now THIS one…. i loved.
the color is off in the website photo.
it looked like this:

bright mint green…yellow, orange, and corally pinks.
with little birds all over it.
i loved it!
but in the end decided it was too dressey for my life.
i have no where to wear it…my friends don't get married any more… i go no where that requires this.

bummer.

funny story: one time (not yesterday) i was shopping and had an over zealous store employee trying to help me find something to buy. (dislike) i came out with a dress on and she was arranging me (touching me a lot) straighting and moving the belt and said "oh honey if you just need to get some Spanx and you will look great" and i said quietly "i am wearing spanx now"

ha.

i did not buy that dress.

101317445_615
this was my favorite.
orange dress…just the right shade of orange….with cream lace on top.
i think it is an AWESOME dress!

the photo looks pink but it's orange.

it didn't fit quite right.  :(

i am considering ordering it in two sizes & trying again in case it was that ONE dress that wasn't sewn right.

101367272_100

this one i thought was really sweet.
kelly green underneath with white lace on top with that sweet little belt!
very flattering cut with the pleats facing inward.
(would that be called an inverted pleat? did i just make up a new term? let's say yes)
LIKE!

101367476_700

this one is crazy bright yellow but i thought it looked good!
i think with brown cowboy boots… chunky necklace… denim jacket….yes!

101368533_158
much better maxi dress.
slimming lines.
a bit more coverage up top…. probably a cardigan to top it off.
thumbs up on this one too.

101326963_609

this one was the best for my needs.
it is a deep corally hot pink color not red like it appears.

my first coral dress of my life!

does it say "mother of high school graduate class of 2013"??

that is the look i am going for.

a cute cardi (of course)…  wedge sandal… pretty necklace…. shave my legs…. πŸ™‚

YEP!  i think it will work!

let's party.

all of these dresses are their website.   (dressbarn.com)

i appreciate the affordability there compared to lots of places.

they are having a sale with dresses.  (buy two save $10 i think?)

i really don't ever buy anything else there…it IS the DRESS BARN ya know?

dress barn did not pay me to post any of this.

i am not even going to link it because i don't want you to be confused.

i don't even know the girl who helped me check out today.

i just thought i would share with you that dress barn (moo) is not that bad.

i mean… it has lots of stuff that is just NOT for me… but there is good stuff in there too.

i am having lunch with mr. duerksen today.
hubba hubba.

Jennifer Cooper - The Spanx comment totally made my day. I have not had a good laugh today and you were my funny moment. Thanks.

beki - you make me want to go to dress barn! super cute choices πŸ™‚

heidi c - Ok, you have convinced me to give that store a try. That yellow dress is adorable and I love the ones wit lace. And you also just reminded me that I will be attending a graduation in a month as well! Yikes! I better find some kid-free time to shop! πŸ™‚

Gina M. - This made me think about Tim Hawkins Comedy routine about the Dress Barn. Have you seen it? Here’s the link if you want to watch it. πŸ™‚
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAu4yG9V7_s

J - My 19 year has the coral dress. She doesn’t have your curves, but has ball-player shoulders and arms. It is very flattering and cute, cute, cute! Not old ladyish at all and she gets many compliments. Go for it!
I am the old lady and can’t bring myself to wear the big floral prints and sparkles. Round ladies don’t need rhinestones.

janet @ ordinary mom - I had to laugh because next week I am headed to Florida with my family for a vacation and this is the third conversation about Dress Barn I have had. My hairdresser told me to go there, as did my mom and now you. So I am listening and will plan to go.
And all three conversations ALSO talked about the unfortunate name.
πŸ™‚

Victoria - Wow. I may have to just check out dress barn. Love the black/white maxi dress and the white lace dress with the green underneath!

Lee Ann - So glad you posted this! I went to the Dress Barn and bought 2 dresses today! So excited. Neither of them are ones you posted though πŸ™‚ I really wanted to find the black and white striped one with the yellow cardigan. No such luck, but 2 dresses in one day is pretty amazing!

katie - “i’m wearing spanx now.” haha–oh this made me laugh!!
i agree, you gotta try it all on….give things a chance because you never know where you’ll find that coveted piece of clothing.

Carrie - We have a dress barn too, I always forget about it. I feel like I’m a a difficult age for clothes, but I’ve felt that way since I was 25.
The same spanx story happened to me except it was my mom who said it. There really isn’t strong enough spanx in the world to hold in my freakishly pregnant looking belly (I’m very much NOT pregnant!).

Lisa - Hey, you oughta get, and wear the green dress shopping. Even to Wal-Mart. Especially to Wal-Mart. With strappy flat sandals, or some cute flip flops. You’d be surprised at how femmie and good it makes you feel. And so much cooler on hot days.
And, BTW, horses are easy, they just eat a lot.

Katey - I grew up with my dad saying hubba hubba about my mom. This made me laugh to read you saying it. Have fun!

midwestmom - I agree with everyone else, run back and get that green dress!! I’m sure the coral one is beautiful, but the green one just looks more like you! Not that I actually know you, lol.

Lorraine R. - Now I wanna go to The Dress Barn (moo)!!!!! You found some super cute dresses! Thanks for sharing – I’m inspired πŸ™‚

Sara Torbett - Thanks for sharing these fun finds! We just got a Dress Barn (in Fayetteville, AR) so I’ll have to stop in :).
I thought of you today-at Target I saw a party banner with the word “WHATEVER” in a variety of colors!
It was so you. Thinking about it now-I should have bought it and sent it to you. Boo. πŸ™ I suppose the thought will have to do!

Angie - I’ve found some really cute things at Dressbarn but your right you have to be careful. Lots of their things are just too mature looking for me. I love the graduation dress you chose!

Janel - The gorgeous green dress you think is too dressy for your life is perfect for lunch with Mr D, lunch with the girls, going to get your done, any reason. I think it can be dressed up or down….so pretty. Just because your in Kansas doesn’t mean you can’t dress like its Chicago or New York! You are beautiful and should show it off a bit once in a while. I bet had you worn that dress to lunch, Mr D wouldn’t have gone back to work! Ha!
Love ya Meg!

Stephanie - Mrs Roper! Hahahahahahaha!!!
Walmart is 20 mins from us. Target is an hour. I get ya!

Whitney - We live in a small town too- with nothing! Walmart & Target are 35 minutes away… Dress Barn is an hour+ However, I love it too despite the name! I have been in a Macy’s and decided not to buy a dress and then find the exact same one there with a different label and half the price! Love the ones you posted- I want them all… except I am 11 weeks pregnant and I know they wouldn’t fit me soon!

Connie - I read your blog everyday. I was born and raised in Newton and now live in Wisconsin. I’m wondering why you don’t mention Et Cetera. It’s my favorite clothing store in Newton (though not for HS graduation).

Amy K. - You are so right about the Dress Barn – the name, the million old lady clothes & then, crazily, incredibly cute stuff mixed in! I do believe I might have to see if I can’t find that green floral dress in my size for a wedding this summer… =)

sara @ it's good to be queen - i LOVE your choice! and you’re right about maxi dresses..they are tricky….especially if you’ve had kids…

Kelly - I laughed out loud at the Mrs. Roper line… got an immediate mental image of her in her moomoos ( I don’t know how moomoos is actually spelled, but they should sell moomoos at Dress Barn, shouldn’t they?!)or caftans as they were called back in the day before they became maxi dresses…had totally forgot about Mrs. Roper, but maybe that’s subconsciously why I can’t bring myself to try on a maxi dress ha! From now on ugly maxi dresses will be called Mrs. Roper caftans around here… You are a kill. You did good at the Dress Barn.

denise@victory rd. - you are a MOG! Congratulations/Sniff sniff.
We live 30 min from everything, too.
We have a “Pants & Things” in our small town. The mannequins in the window are gold. I’ve lived here 20yrs and never been in there.
I’ve learned to shop like you.. just try everything…who knows I might be surprised…or fall into despair.
The MOG dress you picked is perfect!
http://victoryrd.blogspot.com/2012/04/mog-dress.html

Tiffany clark - Living out in the country myself, I too have to drive 30 minutes for anything! I really don’t mind it either. It probably helps me spend less. And shopping without kids? Well, since Olivia was born 5 years ago I don’t think I have really experienced that since. Oh well, there will be a time again. Maybe when I am shopping for HER high school graduation. Oy. You will look fabulous in the outfit you picked out! I love it!

Sara - Some of my favorite dresses have come from Dress Barn…but like you I have never found anything else!

Heidi DeGroot - Just wanted you to know that I recently found the Sweet Nothings strapless bra at Wal-Mart for I think somewhere between 11-14 dollars!! It really is the best strapless bra I have ever had. It also comes with straps so it can be a “convertible” bra. Extra bonus you have a Wal-Mart near you:) I believe it is made by the same company that makes the brand Maidenform which is much pricier in department stores!

Kate - When Julia was a baby, I used to sneak out once a month to dress barn during her Sunday nap. Good times πŸ™‚

Kristin S - So, I just did a search. A brand new one just opened in a new shopping center. Crazy.

Gina - You had me at moo. I need that same look…. Mom of the grad, only I need it x2. Thanks for the shopping help!! I guess I am in denial and hadn’t thought about it but I definitely need a new dress for the occasion. Have a fun lunch!!

Kristin S - You did great! That’s a great dress.
Now, I have no clue where Dress Barn is near me but I’m sure there is and I so want to find that green floral dress!
On a totally different note, I’m driving to Colorado from NC next month. We stay with friends in Tulsa and then head up to 70 and shoot across Kansas. No offense to your state, but I hate I-70. That’s how I see Kansas. You have opened my eyes that there is so much more! So, where should I pull off the interstate and browse/rest/shop!??!?! You find such amazing things in barns. Things that would cost 10 times more here.
Help a girl out?

Adrienne s - I have a Dress Barn 5 minutes from my house and have never been there. You just inspired me. I had no idea there were all those cute dresses!!! I thought it was all “mature” woman clothing.

michelle - A) Dress Barn needs to change their name IMMEDIATELY. I honestly think they’d see at least a 20% jump in sales if they were CUTE DRESSES or HOT MAMA or something. Sheesh.
B) Have you ever looked on eshakti.com? They’re web-only, and you can enter your measurements and they’ll customize their (super cute) dresses to your shape. And honestly, they’re around the same price as Dresses for Moo-Cows (aka Dress Barn). I’ve never ordered one, but I want to! Just waiting for the right event… πŸ™‚

Makila - Why oh why oh why did they name it the Dress Barn? Moo.
πŸ™‚ Cute dresses.

Karyn - I’ve been following you for awhile but haven’t commented before…now I must because this post spoke to me on so many levels. WHY did someone think putting BARN in the name of a women’s clothing store was a good idea?? I had never set foot in a Dress Barn til 2 years ago and I was pleasantly surprised with the options for a cocktail-type dress for an event. I’ve found a couple other good options there since. Also, I grew up in Emporia and can totally relate about driving to a town with other stores. We would make pilgrimages to Topeka a couple times a year to go to a “real” mall. πŸ™‚ I live in Denver now but travel back to East Central Kansas a few times a year. Reading your blog feels like ‘home.’ Thank you!

Susan - Mrs. Roper! Too funny. Years ago I shopped at Dress Barn because I worked for the home office of RadioShack and we had a mall (in downtown Ft. Worth). We had a Casual Corner which was my first choice for work clothes but they went out of business and so Dress Barn enters the pictures. Hate the name too. I had the same issues 15 years ago as you do so I usually bought skirts and sweaters that were okay for work. Thanks for the reminder! Looks like nothing much has changed in the past 15 or so years!

erin - go back and get the green dress….it looks great and you deserve it! after all, you did just run a half marrthon!!

Tracy - Really…who named that store? What were they thinking??
Have fun at lunch!

jamie - kinleigh is napping. my house is quiet. laughing out loud with this blog entry. too funny. and full of absolute truth.

Lizelle - I agree with Kimberly – get the dress!! It looks so so cute!

Carol S. - What a fun post. Thanks for sharing inspiration meg. Hang in there. As a mom of a college freshman I can tell you…it is all good! And I’m grateful I have an 8th grader to keep things going. Have not even thought of a dress for graduation so better jump on this. Thanks again.

rae - ooo! i need a coral dress for a wedding party and i might go in and check that last one out! i went to dress barn for a “blogger event” that was pretty weird and funny. but i did find a tiki looking dress that i loved!

Jennifer@CupcakesandMudPuddles - Loving those maxi dresses….going to have to head over to their website and grab me one or two of those! They’re so great for the summer down here in South Texas. πŸ™‚

Molly - this is how i need to shop too. sometimes i think i can get away with having my girls along…ya know like a fun girls shopping trip. but nope it doesn’t work that way.
and love that dress. you’ll be a sweet mom of a graduate of the class of 2013!!

Jen - I love this post! I feel the same way about Dress Barn (moo!) but a few weeks ago I needed a dress fast and it was my only option. I was shocked! I tried on so many dresses (many of the same ones you tried on!) and found one I loved. I am heading back to use my “bucks” and hopefully find another one for our daughter’s graduation. Glad you found something!

Cori - We have a dress barn too. Get past the old lady clothes and it totally works! I live it because I can find things that aren’t being worn by every other mom in the PTA because we all shop at Target and Kohls.

rhonda - I discovered Dress Barn when shopping for my courthouse wedding 3 years ago. There are some AMAZING dresses there!

Seriously Sassy Mama - I am stuck in my house because my car is in the shop. Boo!

Heather - There is a Dress Barn in the outlet mall near where I live, but I never go in there because of the name. It just puts me off. You’ve shown me some really cute dresses, though. I may have to go in there sometime. They SHOULD pay you for this post!

Stephanie - Have you looked in JCPenney lately? They have some really fun stuff and the prices are actually quite nice! I usually always find something in there. Surveying my closet (or the pile of clothes on my bedroom floor), seems to me I buy myself a lot of clothes at Target!!

Southern Gal - Our small towns must be similar. We are 30 minutes away from the metropolis. We are actually getting a local Chick Fil A next month! The whole town is ecstatic.

Jamie - I bought that orange lace dress. Couldn’t leave there, but the yellow one just was all wrong. Funny.

Kari - Just Friday I had to drag my friend to Dress Barn, the same way my mom had to drag me. I wear a LOT of dresses to work and that’s where I buy most of them. They’re a good quality and they seem to last a long time. But seriously…that name. Could not be any worse.

Kimberly - Cute cute cute!
And the green/floral/birdie one… heck, you should have got it for everyday. It was so you! And besides, you only live once, and it doesn’t need to be for a wedding! :o)

Terrie G - Black stripe with yellow cardi…looks so you!
I used to live in a town with almost a grocery store…
Now I’m in a town with a mall (if you can call it that),
Target, Hobby Lobby, Wal-Mart, etc…
But, sadly I rarely go.
Think I’ve been trained most of my life there is no where to shop.
Not a big shopper anyway…I’ll probably not clothes shop with you.
Unless they have a comfy chair… πŸ™‚
Happy Thursday & Yeah to lunch with the hubs!! Me Too!!

Lee Ann - I totally agree with everything you said about this store! In fact, I’m so excited you posted all of this because I need to head there soon – a wedding in the family this summer and I need a dress!

Amanda - I did a little bit of research. The store started in little city (big town?) on the coast of Connecticut. I’m going to guess that the lady who named it didn’t have much experience with typical barns, or she might have changed her business plan.

Lacy Rohre (who still really wants to come to Craft Weekend!) ;-) - could not agree more. Why in the world did they name it that?

erica - funny! i, too, live in a small town (3300 peeps) without target, starbucks, etc…and it’s about a 30 min drive…so, when i go shop – im serious! lol. living in a small town – the advantages out-weigh the disadvantages for me:) love the dresses! never been in a dress barn.
(ps. i bought one of the bubble gum prints from you – love it! looking forward to your next sale;))

so pretty.

i have a fabric addiction.
i bet this is not news to you.
i am so thankful that i have found a way to be able to feed my addiction through my job.  :)

i can use it for craft weekend.
i can use it for my shop.

although i order a lot online (hawthorne threads and fabric.com) my favorite way to buy it is in person.
there is something about seeing the colors with my own eyes… feeling how soft it is… putting it together with other patterns… it gets my creativity going.

i thought maybe you would like to see what i chose last week at Sarah's.

my love runs deep.

πŸ™‚

craig and i had a discussion about "art" last week.
we discussed what inspires us… art or not.
he and i are very different and that is totally fine.
the things that inspire him, do not inspire me and the things that inspire me, do not inspire him.
it was interesting to talk with him and learn more about him.

because in my brain… color and pattern and texture is supreme.

i can barely read books or concentrate sometimes on certain things because i am thinking about creating.

i see these patterns and i want to draw.

i see these colors and i want to paint.

i feel this fabric and i want to sew.

i am at a restaurant and i notice the shape of the light fixtures or the tile on the floor.

i see a sunset and i notice what colors are in it and where they meet and blend.

i LOVE these things.
i thrive on these things.
i get antsy when i am not able to find it… like gray winter days stuck in the house.

and it's fascinating to learn that other people do not think this way… and then what does make them tick?

where do they find that inspiration?  what makes them happy or brings joy or satisfaction?

isn't it amazing how we are all so different and unique?

i love that God did not make us the same.

and that He gives us people in our worlds who understand us.
or that may not understand but can appreciate the gifts we each were given for our own life.
such a blessing.

Thanks God for color and pattern and ART!

what are you thankful for?

where does your inspiration meet joy in your heart?

Penny Smith - Have you been to a “Love and Respect” conference? It was really good. Great two days. We do pretty darn well, but what they had to say helped us still! And yes. We are VERY different!!
All that fabric was wonderful-I ESPECIALLY love the wood grain!

Robin - Inspiration feeds the soul – as does your blog which is one of two that I look forward to looking at every day! No matter what – I have to see what’s up at whatever!
It’s funny you talk about inspiration – I have been mired in the muck of taxes and paperwork and “quicken” for the last ten days and am usually a right brain gal so I desperately needed a creative “fix” today. On the way to the supermarket I veered left into the Michael’s parking lot and literally, just SLOWLT walked up and down every aisle simply LOOKING for an hour. I didn’t need or want anything. I just wanted to see color, materials, inspiration. It filled me before I went to do the week’s grocery shopping and a sense of peace and calm came over me as I investigated glitter, paint, silk flowers, and such. It was completely frivolous, and pure joy. All I bought were some lime green paper straws. For someday. A lunch with friends? I imagine cutting out flower shapes and gluing Daisies to the straws…with lemonade or iced tea……
Thank you for always being an inspiration!

Wendy - Love these fabric pics! I tried to go to Sarah’s once when we were in Lawrence and it was closed. πŸ™ Wonh wonh I love your pics.

rosewoodfloral@hotmail.com - Meg, I love how you put into words the things that make your heart sing…I am so aware of all the little things that make up this whole beautiful world too…. My hubbie sees almost none of what I see…he likes to be in the woods. He likes to hear birds and the crackling of leaves as critters move underfoot. I like those things too, but I would be noticing how the sun’s rays are shining thru the trees, how the patterns on the bark are spectacular, finding a kodak moment in just about everything I looked at. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t take photos, cause there is just so darned much beauty all around us and I want to preserve it!
love your blog~

denise@victory rd. - i think if you found fabric for me that would inspire me. you could be my personal fabric shopper. πŸ™‚
i do love that God made us all so unique. it would be boring if we were all alike.
it is important that we value our unique differences and celebrate them (as you do here).

Flower Patch Farmgirl - FOR THE LOVE, make this sister a skirt with that first peony and the gray stripes. OR the second peony fabric and the green/white stripe. (It’s your fault for pairing them up!) See how accommodating I am? I give you options!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - FOR THE LOVE, make this sister a skirt with that first peony and the gray stripes. OR the second peony fabric and the green/white stripe. (It’s your fault for pairing them up!) See how accommodating I am? I give you options!

Blanche - Love the bicycle fabric. Who made it?

Jenny B. - So true. I went to an education seminar a while back where the speaker talked about the different ways boys and girls learn and see the world (like literally, with their eyes). One thing he mentioned was that most girls see color and texture, while most boys see lines and movement. God made us different. πŸ™‚
Digital scrapbooking really gets me going. I stay up late creating pages, and when I finally go to bed, I lie down with a smile on my face and tell God thank you for all the pretty colors. πŸ™‚ That’s when I’ve felt successful. When I’m struggling to make my photos and the papers and do-dads come together, I gain appreciation for God’s creativity and the fact that he SPOKE the world into being. I sometimes wish I could look at my blank computer screen and say, “Let there be a colorful, heart-warming page for my four-year-old’s birthday,” and there it would be. Ha. πŸ™‚ I read a post recently about creativity and how we can know it matters to God, and I loved what she had to say:
http://karapaslaydesigns.blogspot.com/2013/03/design-does-it-really-matter.html

GardenOfDaisies - I’m here visiting from Jemm’s. What gorgeous fabrics. Love this explosion of color and pattern. It will be interesting to see what you make with them. I love all the wonderful color in the world, too, but I also find a lot of comfort and serenity in gray days. I think it’s my way to recharge.

Jen - YOU inspire me! Your blog, all that colour, you help me through the blah! Spring inspires and being still stuck under piles of snow D O E S N O T H E L P! Flowers, tree buds, all living things, all things imperfect and time worn, dilapadated old houses…I want to fix them ALL up and bring colour and cheer to the world. And I have a mean fabric collection too…which I don’t do enough with, but it keeps growing!

Melissa - My 4-year old niece watches tv and during every commercial for kids items, she says “WANT THAT”. This is what I said looking at your fabric. WANT THAT. WANT THAT. LOVE it!

Angela A - I too love fabric–and finally figured out I could make quilts to use it. And have a reason to buy more. I buy a lot online with good sales but also try to go to the stores, especially to see new lines and the larger scale prints. It’s harder to see those online. I am inspired by the fabric, the colors in them, by nature and travel, seeing new patterns, textures, color combos, and people. I am inspired by blogs and real life houses, seeing how others use color and decorate in new ways. I also spent a long time staring at the lamp over my table at Chuy’s trying to figure out how to make it.

Jen - Thank you so much Penny! It was an amazing day with God at the very center!

roganne - such beautiful fabrics! how could i possibly go to sleep now when i want to create something! i too have a deep joy in my heart for creating things…giving new life to something that is unwanted…planting seeds and watching them grow. He made me a nester! and i love Him for it!

jodie - Love the fabric-great choices you made there!!
me, i am thankful for the….honeycomb pattern…gets me every-time….what a great design created by the creator…so glad he thought of it so I could be mesmerized!!!(not to mention the little creatures that help make it -so amazing!)

Kelly - I love the bicycles on the white and both peony/cabbage rose? prints. I too love color and pattern and texture and notice things like tile and light fixtures. i love that my husband appreciates that about me and knows it about me. He has an eye for the visual in photography and such but also is inspired by other things as well. I am also inspired by breezes. Moving air and water are both a big deal to me. Kelly

Sharla - I thought I had spotted bike fabric – NEED now! Thanks

Kimberlee Jost - Where joy meets my heart:
The beach.
Barnes and Noble.
Recipes.
That one fabric. You know the one.
Greenhouses full of flowers.
Cheese.
Wine.
Bread.
Europe.
Love.
You get the idea. πŸ™‚

kerry - Oh that bicycle fabric is just GORGEOUS!!!!! I’m in love πŸ™‚
I’m inspired on a daily basis by others who fill their blogs and therefore my mind and heart, with colour, love & happiness! *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*
Kerry x

happygirl - I love that God made us all different, too, at least in the things that inspire us. I’m super glad for God’s love and forgiveness, too.

Danielle - Great fabric choices,I saw at least ten that I want right now! Sunny days, being outdoors, color, textures, pattern and my kids all inspire me:)

sharon - I am thankful for all of our senses that God blessed us with! At the moment im thankful for the wonderful fabric eyecandy youve shown us! Wow! Thankyou!

Stephanie - Oh my. There is such beauty here! I totally get what you’re saying about color and pattern and texture. I LOvE color. But since I can’t draw or paint I tend to want to express it through photography and sewing (when I have the patience). There are not many things I can get lost in, but photography of nature is one of them.
Thanks for always creating beautiful blog posts!

Jack - I always find your blog and your love and use of colour so inspiring! I always look forward to reading your blog posts and looking at your lovely colourful photos!

Stephanie Talty - Love the bicycle fabrics!!!

C - I get what inspires you. I worked in retail for 20 years and my favorite thing was to do the merchandising. Creating displays with the products and making clothing/fabric look like other things to creat the atmosphere in the space. Now I see colors and supplies and want to create. I also notice the light fixturea and tiles…i think my husband thinks I’m crazy sometimes, but he has his things too. Thinking outside the box is so much fun…CREATE!

Penny - Jen, what a beautiful wedding your family put together! You can see the look of pure joy in your daughter’s face.

Lora - Yes! I don’t “get” people who don’t notice things like… flowers, colors, furniture, gardens, home decorations, pictures, wind chime sounds, paint, textures, turquoise! πŸ™‚ I don’t know how these people live in this beautiful world!? But, you’re right, God made us all different. I’m glad he made me this way though.

Lindsey - I too am inspired by fabric and color. I smiled when I saw your fabric choices – many were the exact same as I have bought lately! Love them! I feel the need to create everyday, even if it is something small. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to do so.

Tracy - Aaaahhh…what a beautiful post! I’m thankful for books to read and knowledge to learn! God is good πŸ™‚

Jen - These are lovely! I am 45 years old and am just finding my “inspiration”! I was forced (by budget contraints!) to do a lot of creating and sewing for our daughter’s wedding last year. I found that I LOVED it and I’m starting to gear up to do my first scrappy quilt! I can’t wait! I’m wondering if you have a “target price” for your fabrics? Do you try to get them below a certain price per yard? Do you wait for sales? Do you use every last scrap? Just being nosy!
On another topic: we had Lynnette’s creamy ham and noodles for dinner last night. Always a YUMMY hit at our house! Thanks for sharing.
Jen
P.S. Proud momma moment: our daughter’s wedding (that I had to get “my craft on” for was featured on the fabulous wedding blog, Style Me Pretty, if you’d like to take a peek! It was SOOO much work but worth every second for the amazing day God gave us!
http://www.stylemepretty.com/2012/12/05/gettysburg-bb-wedding-by-abby-caldwell-photograph/

Heather Simnitt - I am inspired by God’s creation. I love the beauty of a sunrise, a sunset, the mountains, the beaches, the prairies. Flowers and water and all the gorgeous things God chose to place in our world – totally sets us apart from the other planets, KWIM? How you feel about fabric and art – it’s how I feel about travel. Some people don’t get it. I’m not looking for a continuous vacation from life….I want to explore, learn, and take in the magnificent creation that God blessed us with. I think about where to go and what to see and do all the time. We no sooner come home from a trip before I am inspired by what we saw to want to go out and see some more…plan another trip….look into exploring this amazing sphere!

Jenn - I completely agree! We are all so different. I’m thankful for those that love numbers, my husband gets them. I find them boring. But we need number people. I love creating. I definitely gravitate towards others that are like me. And those that aren’t, I try to convert them…hehe.

Jen - Super love the bicycle and wood grain fabric…

angela - My seven little grands….nothing gives me energy and happiness like spending time with them!

Seriously Sassy Mama - I am thankful for color. Especially color in paint and ceramics. I am thankful for dishes. They make me happy!

Mary - There is not a single pattern or color here I do not like! Color sends me too. My husband is a financial planner…my eyes glaze over when he begins to excitedly explain to me a plan…it does take creativity to do what he does…it’t just different! I am learning to actively listen…lol.
The top of my list for inspiration is color, design, pattern, books, lets not forget books…I love pulling all those together…I love arranging and re-arranging rooms…I love working in my journal and showing women how to take their first steps in using visual journaling as a way to connect with God in new ways and exploring their hearts with color, image and word!
Yes, thank God for all the ways he enables us to be creative…he provided unlimited ways to express ourselves didn’t he…
Meg, I love coming to your blog, daily. I am always inspired, encouraged and always get a punch of glorious color! Your beautiful heart shines brightly here.

Jill - Oh my! We are kindred spirits! I am exactly the same way. You should see my fabric collection. I just like to look at it! I have to stay away from the fabric stores… and there are some fun ones here in Omaha….because I can’t go in without walking out with a bag full of inspiration!
On another note. I have been a blogger for a long time… however, some life changing things have happened in the past couple of years causing my blogging to come to a complete halt. Anyway… I am ready to hop in again. Visiting you always makes me smile and inspires me so much. I want to thank you for that. I am ready to move forward again. I miss that creative outlet so much. I just hope people will find me again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
And by the way…. you are just too darn cute!!! And I love reading about your beautiful family!

shar y - Great question and beautiful post! I am thankful that I can see beauty in so many places. Just this morning, on the way to work, I was admiring the sunrise glow in the sky and how the light posts on the freeway looked so cool in front of that glow. It was so pretty!

Linda - So beautiful! Makes me happy to see all the colors and brightness. Grateful for all our differences! Have a happy day!

i am smiley.

my little overnight girls trip was fabulous.

there is just something awesome about getting out of the everyday and changing it up!

taking a 3 hour drive to visit a friend.
with a friend.
about 2 hours into our drive i took a breath and said "well….those are all my stories.  So…what's up with you?"

i am kind of a big talker.

i love when there is TIME to really talk.
to get down to the real stuff…. once the stories are over, the big things that happened and get down to the stuff that is deep in your heart.
the stuff that doesn't get said until you are past the small talk.

and it almost always takes an overnight getaway to get there.
you have to be off mommy duty for several hours.
you have to be relaxed enough to let you mind go to a new place.

because at least for me… i can't be in "that place" all day everyday.

the place where your dreams are… the place where you can think about WHY you are the way you are.
the place where you can safely talk about what is going on and what do i REALLY want.
what God has been showing me, teaching me and how He has been loving me.

when your life is GO GO GO and you are doing everything for kids all day and work and life…
"that place" gets shut out.

so it is always so nice to get away and find that place again.

i love spending time with Ashley.
she is a peaceful quiet force.
we are quite opposite but so much a like.
and the same with kimberlee… we are so different but so much the same.
she asks questions that i never think of.  she speaks words of truth to me.

girlfriends are the best.

and when girlfriends will sit at breakfast drinking coffee until lunch…. then life is pretty awesome.

IMG_9463

completely unrelated to this post…. but very pretty anyway….

i made some mini yellow bunting for the yellow bedroom at the Craft House.

πŸ™‚

ok…

we are going to do some fun stuff for spring break.
so i should help get ready for that.

or i could hide in my room for awhile longer….

do you have any girls time scheduled in your future?

you will be so happy when you do.

make some time.  stick to it.  and get away from life long enough to catch your breath.

it's so worth it.

Jess - I love everything about this post. It’s made my heart smile. Thanks for writing it. πŸ™‚ Girl time is the best.

Bethany - This weekend I went away with some friends to the Hearts at Home conference. Though it was a busy weekend it was nice to get away and gather some encouragement. Anita Renfro was the entertainment Friday night so we laughed until we cried.
I’m hoping to schedule in some more girlfriend time in the next month. I’m feeling disconnected from some of my best friends-life gets so busy.

Katie - Totally feelin ya! I loved this; “the stuff that doesn’t get said until you are past the small talk.
I have a girls night coming up on Friday and I cant wait!

Jen - Your post was lovely…as always….but I want that completely unrelated but gorg-E-ous red chair and fabric seat cushion and yellow bunting and just about all of what you have at the craft house! Your stuff always makes me smile! (and a weekend away with ‘my’ girls would be divine too!)

Tiffany - I know that talk you’re talking about. My girlfriends and I were able to enjoy that on our 9 hour trip to see you! (And back home again!) I’m so happy for you that you got a chance to get away!
Unrelated note… My hubby and I are looking into doing a 9 day trip with Habitat. Not sure when and where (maybe Haiti!)(Gotta keep saving up that money!), but it’s exciting to think about it!
Enjoy your spring break family time! I’ve still got a week and a half to wait till it’s my turn.

Abbie Swartzentruber - Hey Meg – a few weeks back I had emailed you about those pretty butterfly pillows you bought…and was so shocked to get an email back. Thank you for being so very kind and thoughtful – you pointed me in the right direction and now I have my very own butterfly pillows gracing my bed:) Thanks for being such an amazing inspiration to the Internet world:)!!

amyjupin - i love it.
i love it.
i love it.
i’m a teeny bit jealous.
i love it.
i love it.
i love it.
and you too.

Jennifer - I love the yellow mini bunting and the yellow polka-dot cup. Sounds like you had a great weekend – good for you!!

Stacy - Good friends are the best! I hope they have recharged your batteries.

Angela - I miss having friends like that.
Totally not a question for you, but I started reading Under the Sycamore after reading this post. I would love to figure out how she convinced her husband to let her have chickens. My current method of convincing involved pleading eyes and the phrase “Can we PRETTY PLEASE have chickens?” It’s not working out too well for me… πŸ™‚

shauna reed - those best friends are such a miracle. you might not be the same, but they speak the same language. i miss my friends.

shauna reed - those best friends are a miracle. you might not be the same, but you speak the same language. i miss my friends.

Gail - Just spent the weekend with 2 girlfriends running the Big 12 5K and watching KU win the tourney. Good get away, good times.

dixie - girlfriends ARE the best!!! and where oh WHERE did you get that yellow mug? i LOVE it!!!

Rach - I certainly hope I can see my BFF at the end of April. It’s been too long and I miss her. Girl time is the best.

Danielle - Looks like so much fun! I can’t remember the last time I had a girl’s trip…I think it’s time:)

beth - an overnight is always what I need to get my “mojo” back!!! Loved your pictures and wiiiiiish I could do one of your craft weekends so bad! xo

Ashley - “a peaceful quiet force” – that made me smile. Can’t say I’ve ever thought that of myself. Thanks for coming down. It was so good to see you!

Darcie L. - Isn’t it nice? My best girlfriend and I (known each other since birth basically), slumber partied together last weekend and stayed up until 2:30am (3:30 – thank you Daylight Savings) just TALKING. We couldn’t stop! It’s so refreshing to have someone who understands every little thing, and doesn’t care about the junk, but CARES enough about the junk to talk about it and work through it with you.

Carly Winborne - I have that fun yellow polka dot mug! When I bought it, I thought it would be something that you would love. So not surprised to see a picture of it show up here! Love this post, the healing and truth it represents. Isn’t God good?

Cindy - Why yes I do have some girl time in my future! Every time I see you post pics from The Barn, I think…I so want to go there someday! Then recently it dawned on me that it’s almost exactly halfway between me and friends in Oklahoma. The PERFECT meeting spot, don’t you think?

Tracy - Sounds like a lovely getaway. Yay for girl time!

Dawn G - Glad you got a getaway! Fun!

Lora - Girlsfriends ARE the best. They “get” you and you don’t even have to explain yourself. Me and one of my best friends sometimes call each other and say, “I’m such a bad mom” and then tell our “bad mom” story. Then we laugh about it. We both know we’re great mothers so we can say that to each other πŸ™‚

Lindsey - I love what you said about how it takes a little bit of time to get past the small talk and into the big stuff. So true – love it! Glad you had a great time!

Juli - Am I only one who sighs when they see these blog posts? Surely I’m not the only one with children ages 1-11, in their presence day in & day out, 24/7, with a husband that works long, demanding hours and considers a weekend away with me near impossible much less the idea of me away with girlfriends for a night. Am I really the only one who has the grandparents who live 17 hours away or who only want Kodak moments with their grandkids and don’t really want to watch them when I need some time off from being a Mom? Am I really the only one who wonders how bloggers handle the logistics of freeing themselves from Mommyhood for a couple of days and thinks that even just a couple of hours at Target alone would be nice? Sorry if I seem like a Debbie-downer. I am honestly asking if I am the only one.

jenny - my BFF of 26 years are headed to spend craft weekend with you and i can hardly stand the wait until may!!!! so excited! {jiggety, jig!}

Kelly - Wonderful post and a great reminder! I also want to know where you got the seat cushions. I love the bright colors.

happygirl - I miss having girlfriends. Everyone I’m friends with works full time and we’re all tired when we get home. I work hard at the friendships I have. They are precious to me.

Jessica - very sweet!! No surprise you are friends!! <3

Danielle - My husband just called me a crazy blog stalker because when I scrolled down to the pictures and saw the living room, I gasped and said, “That’s Ashley’s!” hahaha… it is probably weird since I live on the other side of the country and have never met either of you, but that’s okay! Right?! Glad you got to get away for a bit!

Kelly - Sounds like you had a wonderful time away! I just had a weekend full of girl time last weekend. It was our third year doing a girls crafting weekend away. And for the third year, it was awesome! My next girls weekend is on the calender for the first weekend in June – FARM CHICKS! So excited for that!

misty - time with the girlfriends is priceless & therapeutic. Happy weekend πŸ™‚
ps where did you get those chair cushions? LOVE them

Lori Austin - Time with girlfriends is priceless. Haven’t had that time for myself in a long
time. Sigh… Good for you for getting away.
Enjoy your weekend and spring break!

kristen - I have a girl trip scheduled for April 5th in Kansas. I think we are going to be doing some crafting! πŸ™‚

Kathy - i love this! it’s exactly how i feel about time with my girlfriends too!
kathy k =)

Alicia @ La Famille - i can hear in your “voice” that a night away did you good. it IS so important. glad you had some fun girl time. i haven’t in SO long and i need it bad!! i am going to spend the day away alone tomorrow and i’m really excited about that πŸ™‚

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - Relaxation, friends, quiet time= perfection. Glad you got to go!

lisa - What a nice weekend! I wish I was going away for a girls weekend! But… I am still nursing my daughter so that’s not possible. I am however going for a pedicure in the morning and my one hour pedicure is most definitely going to turn into a 3 hour mommy’s morning out. I am way more excited about it than I probably should be. Ha!

kathy - No “real” girl time but my sister-in-law and I have taken our kids on a trip to Memphis and we are sharing an adjoining room with the kids- so lots of time to really catch up while the kids hang together in the other room. It is a good next best thing! And awesome cousin time πŸ™‚

jen - i would love to have a weekend like this. for me all my besties reside on the westcoast and i’m now in the east. i think that has been the hardest part of this move – the lack of girlfriends. i have tried but i just haven’t made any of those “special” friends. maybe one day. for now i will live through this and think of the day this summer i will spend 4 hours with my best girlfriend in vancouver. {with kids and husbands so it will be not the same at all but at least something after three years!} gosh i sound like debbie downer but gotta keep it real!! πŸ˜‰

Seriously Sassy Mama - I would so love to take a trip with some friends. In the end though a trip by myself would be awesome!

Kate - So glad you were able to get away and enjoy!

jamie - oh your words are so powerful and true and lovely. so happy you were able to getaway! have a super fun spring break!

Valerie @ Chateau A La Mode - Oh how I love my girlfriends…so very important to really be a good mom, right? I signed up for women’s retreat at our church with a girlfriend and we know no one else who is going. We’re not sure if we will have fun or not, you know what I mean?, but we know we will have fun together and that is a good thing. Happy weekend Meg! Glad you were with friends for a couple of days.

IMG_20130114_145017
i went back to the mall last week and the gold shoes
that were completely covered in gold glitter were 70% off!
score.

IMG_20130114_195334
annie shouted "MOM pleeeeeease can i get one of these?! They are only $39.99!!"

IMG_20130115_093539
ran five miles by myself…. well, me and the avett brothers and mumford & sons.

IMG_20130115_170230
tulips.
they are so nice on the eyes.

IMG_20130116_183707
talby found these in the bathroom and wanted to know WHY?
Why do we have them? Whose are they? What are they for? Where did they come from?

(they are a mold of craig's teeth…fascinating right?)

IMG_20130116_134920
a vase of dr.seussy flowers were sunny and nice during this FREEZING week we have had.

IMG_20130117_083430
so cold.
going running in this cold weather is quite something.
frozen thighs no matter how far we go.
but the reward will be endurance when the weather improves…. right?
i hope so.

IMG_20130117_100721
i love this breakfast.
cutie…greek yogurt… granola… coffee with LOTS of half & half.

IMG_20130117_152350
cleaning at the craft house is always pretty decent because it's all so pretty to see.

IMG_20130118_082440
i steal my husband's socks for cold running…. they are just better.

IMG_20130118_100927
on friday we did our run and then gathered at my friend's house and helped her prepare 25 meals for her freezer as a birthday gift to her.  :)
the gift was helping it get accomplished.
she is super organized so we did what we were told and it all worked out great!
that is my favorite way to cook… "just tell me what to do"

IMG_20130118_105204
i chopped and chopped and chopped.

IMG_20130118_140355
then i put together calzones.
it was a lot of work but so worth it!  it's a GENIUS way to cook meals.

IMG_20130119_080816
saturday morning i snuck in some time under a blanket with coffee and my book.
the sun came up and became too much for me sit there anymore.
but i will take that sunshine anytime!
IMG_20130119_131701
i took sean to his basketball tournament for the day… just the two of us.
he had three games and i really enjoyed it all.
it has been SO MUCH fun to watch my kids improve in their sports this year.

IMG_20130119_175558
after sean's three games we went to scott's game at our old high school gym!
it was very surreal to be there as a grown up… as a parent… of a HIGH SCHOOLER?!
so weird.
and lots of the same people sitting or standing in the same place they did when i was in high school?!!

IMG_20130120_104452

i am reading The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out.

it's wordy but so far it's reeeeeally good.

"for grace proclaims the awesome truth that all is gift"

IMG_20130120_201415
sunday night swimming…. yes please.
craig and sean spent almost the whole time wrestling.
why do boys do that so much?

IMG_20130120_221613
talby organized all annie's babies for her so annie had to feed them all before going to bed herself.

IMG_20130121_100005
and this morning…. we ran 6.17 miles in 17 degrees.
it was HARD.
but it's done. THANK GOODNESS!

IMG_20130121_114346
then we met AGAIN but this time at the craft house and we made freezer to crock pot meals!
we made 6 recipes all together and bagged them in freezer ziploc bags!
awesome.

IMG_20130121_143804
touching all that raw meat all day was kinda gross but i think we will all happily eat it.

i will definitely blog the recipes we tried and show more pics of that soon!
i honestly can't wait to do it again!

and now i am stinkin' tired.

i am going to bed.

thanks again for the stove sponsors!!!

Jaime Melcher - Will you share the 25 meals for the freezer with us? I would love to do something like this… just tell me what to do! πŸ™‚ Smiles!

tinaehb3 - the commercial is hysterical!!!!!!

jennibell - Your Annie and my Margaret would get along so well!!! She always picks out stuffed animals or some other gross thing like that at thrift stores but I say “no”. . .it has to be something that can be washed without falling apart — ha! And she would completely want to help Annie feed all those babies too πŸ™‚ Yea on the stoves and double-yea on the running in 17 degrees. . .I.could.never.
And we’ll have our first high-schooler next year. . .wow.

Angie - How in the world do you manage to accomplish so much? There are so many awesome things in this post I don’t even know what to comment on. What I do know is that Freezer Cooking is awesome. I wish I could find the time & dedication to do it!!!

Lennie Jackson - Love the couch also! I bought a stove :). Hope you surpass your goal!!! Way to carry out God’s work a little at a time.

denise@victory rd. - snl clip is hilarious.
want your polka dotted.
it’s too cold to run (and i live in cali. wimp).
ragmauffin words, so so good. i don’t deserve Him and His love either.

Tracy - Congrats on the stove donations!!
Can’t wait to hear about the crockpot meals!!!

amanda - Woot! It’s amazing what people with a purpose can accomplish!

Lisa - Freezer to crockpot meals sound awesome – totally what this working-outside-the-home mama needs. Can’t wait to hear more about it! πŸ™‚

Erika - I LOVE your blog and look forward to reading it every day!!!! This is my first time posting. I am amazed and so proud of you for running in the cold…brrr!!! essvedy@aol.com

susan - Love all the pictures, Meg! I have to tell you that I went to Ikea this weekend and saw that tray and thought of you! I almost bought it, but got the long rectangle with rainbow dots instead.

Lisa M. - That’s awesome about the stoves! Great job!
And you ran in 17 degree weather?? I’ve stopped running outside at the moment cuz it’s reeeeaaallly cold (1 degree today) and I don’t know if I’d make it. My problem is clothing. I always start out really cold then half way through I’m taking off gloves, my hat and wishing I could shed some clothes! I think I might have just been inspired to go out (no, not in 1 degree). Maybe when it gets above 20 πŸ™‚

Lisa - Wowza is right!!! So awesome how many stoves were bought!

Jenny B. - So fun! One random question… Do you like your new rainbow knives? πŸ™‚

Janna - CONGRATS!! AWESOME!!! On the stoves AND the running;) Had to comment and say hey! that’s my fav mug too;) Is it a RE mug from Target? I just got one at Goodwill a few weeks ago, same color, and it’s my new fav! Your flowers look so yum. Makes me wanna go buy some. And I just printed off 19 recipes to double and a groc list from pinterest to do freezer to crockpot meals. Can’t wait. I LOVE your idea of doing it with friends for their bday.Genius! Also I am so in love with the Craft House and CW I can hardly stand it. I am 34 now and told my best friend that is what we are gonna be doin in ten years. Sounds like the BEYOND DREAM JOB!! I hope her and I can come to a CW before ten years tho. YOU ROCK!!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - I am blown straight away that you ran 6.something miles in 17 degrees. I mean…Superwoman. I ran 1.1 mile in the warmth of my basement and thought I might die. And I walked half of it.
Also: The stoves!!!!!!!!!!!!! woop woop!

Tiffany - I’m so happy for you with the success of the stoves! See the difference you make?! Amazing! YOU rock!

i did.
i circled things on almost every page.

this book Decorate Workshop looks like a fun book!

******************************************

so i made this whole list of things i love and "want"
but all day while i was working on it i just felt…. funny.
it's just a fun list.
i don't NEED any of it and do i even really "want" these things??
"it's just fun inspiring stuff….why am i feeling like this?" i said to myself all day.

what do i REALLY WANT?

i want Yana to have a mom & dad to take care of her forever.
to love her forever.

Yana

i saw her on Jeannett's blog yesterday and i can't get her out of my mind!!!
she is precious.
she is an orphan.
she needs a family.
it could be you!

don't you want to kiss her face?!  and hug her tight and never let her go….

i was not planning on writing about this…. i was just making a silly wish list.

but God would not let me leave it at that.
he took a hold of my heart and my blog today and made sure i refocused on the REAL want…
the desire of my heart.

because all i really WANT today is for Yana to get a family this christmas.
i want to help her get that!!
that is the good stuff.

THAT is the sparkly glittery dress of real life.

jeannett has helped two other sweet babies through Reese's Rainbow find families the past two years and it is so joyous to know i was a part of that.

so let's ALL help YANA this year!!

go over to Life Rearranged, read all about Yana and you can even enter jeannett's giveaway.

AND DONATE.

it will be the best christmas gift you will give.

Tiffany - Oh Meg. Once again, your random fun gives me a smile. And your baby portion of the post has me thinking more… I’ve always kind of felt a tug at my heart strings for adoption. It kind of flits in and out of my mind. Maybe God has that in the plans for our family. I don’t know. It’s good for you to mention this though, bringing it back to my thoughts. I just can’t imagine a baby without a home. πŸ™

danad@hotmail.com - BBW Stress Relief is my absolute favorite, too! I hide it away just for me! πŸ™‚

Eryn - Saw your shoes for half off AND in your size on Pinterest right after reading your blog post. Enjoy!!
http://www.tiffanyfreeruns.com/nike-free-30-v4-womens-tiffany-blue-tropical-twis-silver-pro-platinum-p-212.html

Michelle - Check out this website for those Nike shoes. They are discounted like half off and they have an 8.5. Hope they are the ones you are looking for! http://www.tiffanyfreeruns.com/nike-free-30-v4-tiffany-blue-reflective-silver-pure-platinum-p-198.html

Ela - Ps. I gave u a gift u might like πŸ˜‰

Mary - i want that baby.
really, i would LOVE to receive such an amazing gift like that precious soul.
headed over to jeanetts.

Ela - Thank you for this post Meg.
Especially theese words:
“because all i really WANT today is for Yana to get a family this christmas.
i want to help her get that!!
that is the good stuff.
THAT is the sparkly glittery dress of real life.”
You inspired me beyound words. Just the way you expressed it just descibed it in a new way, it painted a picture that will stay with me all my life. It shaked me and moved me and put words on the longing I have for my life. The real sparkly dress. And will change how I celebrate christmas, in ways I donΒ΄t know yet. But i know I want to share this with the youthgroup iΒ΄m on of the leaders in when we celebrate xmas next week. Thank you for writing this!!

Candy Joyce - LOVE your blog!!!
I feel like I can’t run without my watch!!! πŸ˜‰ I don’t have a Garmin, but have a Nike one and love it. You download your runs and it maps them out, you can see your pace for every mile, it keeps up with every run you ever do, it tells you achievements you earn–blah, blah—I love it! πŸ™‚ Would love to know what training method you are going to be using for the 1/2. I only run 5K’s—:) but after running the St. Jude one in Memphis, I am motivated to do a 1/2 for those precious kiddos battling cancer.

Amber - Love RR and the kiddos on there. Are you sure she isn’t YOUR baby? She is totally totally precious. Great list!

Flower Patch Farmgirl - She’s so squishable!! Your heart. I like it. I know of the exact tension you write about here. I feel it all the time. I NEVER used to! dangit.
Okay, HOW did the person above me not like BossyPants??? I’m sure I can guess…but I LOVED it. I shook the bed laughing.
And I hauled the JCP catalog around for months. I took it to the next level and cut out my husband, my kids, everything for our house, what we wore, my wedding dress (haha, JCP!) It was seriously my favorite “toy”.
What else???
Oh. I have that West Elm thing only in shower curtain form. It’s citrony and I love it.

Tanya - Stress relief is my one and only too. Stress + Relief = Good.

Linda - Loved today’s post! Made me smile!

Jillbeth@aol.com - Hi Meg,
I happen to be heading to the Nike Employee store tomorrow – lucky me I live in Portland and have many Nike employee friends who give guest passes – woo hoo! Want me to look for your shoes for ya???? I am SO serious! AND they would be half the price as retail, I am also SO serious about that. And you could pay me and everything…..happy to help a girl out.

Chantelle - As a mom of 5 internationally adopted kids I would like to say to someone who might be tempted but unsure… GO FOR IT!! πŸ™‚ Adoption is a blessing and a gift. Nothing you do in life will ever compare.

Molly - Love your list. all. of. it. you kinda punched me in the stomach with the last one though. the good punch you in the stomach kind. praying for yana today. thanks!

alamama - I have had my eye on Yana for some time. I too pray she gets a forever home.

AliG - I splurge and buy swim stuff from Athleta – totally worth it as it holds up so well!

T - Have you looked on the Nike site where you can customize your shoe colors?

Lacy - You should get Bossypants on audiobook. Listening to Tina read it just put me in stitches.

Kim@NewlyWoodwards - Awesome list. I am normally just a lurker but had to suggest Bossypants on audio. I downloaded it on my iPhone and laughed my behind off listening to Tuna Fey read it while working on projects.

Gabrielle - Meg, your blog ALWAYS makes me smile. And I can see you perfectly in that neon green athleta shirt. Sounds to me like you might be wanting little Yana for your own home . . .

Tracie - I had one of those days yesterday. I was at a Stop Hunger Now meeting talking about how twenty-five cents pays for one meal. I was super humbled when I realized my $3 latte could have provided food for 12 people. Definitely makes you think about needs/ wants. I am so grateful for all of God’s blessings, and so grateful to be able to be used by Him.
Thanks for this post today.

CathyC - Oh Reeces Rainbow! L.O.V.E.
**My kids** are Beckett, and the sisters Samantha & Kristina. I have prayed for lots of kids on there & they have found their families, but for some reason these 3 kids are still there and it KILLS me. Kristina is 2 weeks older than my daughter & I cannot imagine my daughter in that place.
Thanks for bringing light to Reeces today.

jen - Meg,
I’m not sure how much of these you read, but wanted to enlighten you on the donut making. You can make the most simple and delicious podered sugar (my favorite) or cinnamon suger donuts with just TWO ingredients — pilsbury biscuits, the cheap, comes in a six-pack kind; and either powdered suger or cinnamon suger, depending on what you like.
Here’s what you do:
remove and wash the cap of any small, round lid, like the one on your soy or A1 sauce, for example. press it down in the middle of a biscuit, shaking it from side to side a bit to separate the dough. The middle circle you just cut out is your donut hole and now you have a donut. repeat this process until you have all the donuts and holes you want. The kids could do this. I used to love making these as a kid … but I digress. In the meantime, prepare a fairly deep and wide pot on the stove. Heat enough oil so that you can add a single layer of donuts wihtout having them touch the bottom. I put mine on medium-high heat, but you can adjust as you go if needed (everyone’s stove is different). Also, grab a smallish paper bag, (think sack lunch) and make sure it doesn’t have any holes in it. Dump a decent amount of powdered suger in (or cinnamon sugar if that’s what you are using) and set aside. Freedom1x
When the oil is heated, start dropping in the donuts and holes. It won’t take long for them to brown up. Make sure you turn them over to cook the other side and roll the holes around to cook them evenly on all sides. when their done, plop them in the paper bag of goodness, twist up the top of the bag really well and shake them up. Behold, beautiful, fresh donuts at home in no time. Enjoy!

Jen - I’m reading BossyPants right now. My friend gave it to me last month for my birthday. It’s all right. I don’t find Tina Fey’s writing nearly as funny as I find Jenny McCarthy’s books. SHE cracks me up! Have you read any of her’s?
I’m with ya on the B & B works Stress Relief products. Love them!!!

colleen - so i thought .. this is a fluffy, i want post… until the end…..beautiful…!

Lee Ann - Ach! That chair! I have almost the EXACT chair – torn apart in my office. I paid $5!!!! It’s as sturdy as can be with steel springs. It’s OLD and I’m going to re-do it. I can’t believe how much it’s the same.
As for the garmin. For me it’s a total mental thing. If I need to run 6 miles – it helps me count down. You can really do the same thing by “getting to the next corner” or the “next fence post”, but it’s all about knowing where I’m at and how much further I have to go.
Such a fun list!

alicia @ la famille - your list is my list…maybe except for the gowns…unless they come in maternity πŸ˜‰
love LOVE mad men!! when’s the next season coming?!?!
that stress relief scent is my favorite.
i have a bunch of running stuff from athleta because it comes in longs. and i need that!
great taste, chica πŸ™‚
and that baby?? melt my heart already.

Lindsey - I love your wish list! I have a wish list of both small and extravagant things also. I think the pink chair could definitely be on mine also! Thanks for brining light to Yana.

Laura - nick and i saw a young mom with her tiny baby at mass this morning…and i told nick i wanted a baby.
he said “its a lot of work”
i said “i know. you pull up the car…and i will grab that baby and run…”
i didn’t steal the baby
and i am pretty sure another baby is not in the big plan for us
but who knows….
i came home and cradled the dog
that’ll have to do

Jill Franklin - oooohmygosh I want those shoes too!
I know in my heart Yana will have a family to love her. I hope it’s soon. I’ll be praying & hoping & praying & hoping some more.

Sarah H. - I asked for a donut pan and running clothes this year too! Also, I read BossyPants, well some of it, but didn’t like it so took it back to the library.
That baby is way too precious. I will be praying God puts her in the perfect home He already has picked out for her. Please keep us posted on her!

i am supposed to be black friday shopping with my mom & sister and going out to breakfast.
it's such a fun day together.

i hope you girls went anyway!!
missed you this thanksgiving.

we ate a lot… twice.
annie was so worn out and said "can we please go hooooome?"
and requested the yucky tasting stronger medicine.
poor baby.

i thought i would share my instagram pictures from the past few weeks.

i am Meg Duerksen on IG… come follow along.

are you going out black friday shopping?
i am in the morning…starbies first….then all my favorite shops but it won't be the same without you mom & lorel!

i actually LOVE black friday.
it's not as crowded as you think.

lorraine tuohy - my most precious piece is my late mom’s engagement ring, what makes it even more special, is that she gave it to me before she passed. She said I want to see you enjoy it while im still here!

Christina - Poor Annie!
Your pictures are awesome, as always. I need to get to creating with these children of mine!! Your house always looks so fun.
Well, not the laundry part. πŸ™‚ It looks just like mine in that regard!! haha! I like doing laundry, the smell of the detergent as it’s going…it’s the putting away part that kills me! I want a dresser for each person right in my laundry room! So…I need a pretty big room. ha!
Thanks for sharing your life. It always makes me smile. You have a way of making life look so beautiful. (I need that inspiration!) (I hope that doesn’t sound as lame as I think it does…I’m trying to compliment you, not sound pathetic! πŸ˜› )

Nicole G - Meg, I just want to say Happy Holidays to you and your family and thank you. Your blog is a place I can go to when I am feeling not so happy about the current state of things in life. Your positive attitude and gratefulness for the wonderful things God has given us each day really opens my eyes and reminds me that I am blessed in so many ways. I am so thankful that you share your world with us for it really means a lot to many, myself included.
God Bless you and your family,
Nicole

Jenny B. - OH NO! I’m so sorry about Annie’s broken arm! I just now checked your blog and went back and read the past couple of posts. That SO stinks. πŸ™ Praying for quick healing.

Andrea @ This Pug Life - The only place I went for Black Friday was Michael’s. I popped in before work. My store was dead! I bought an embarrassing amount of ribbon, but at 70% off, I couldn’t help myself.

Alisha - Poor Annie. I hate it when you can’t take the hurt away. Just makes your heart sink. Where did you get the ADORABLE round link fabric covered bracelet? I must have one of those!!! πŸ™‚

Lori Austin - Keep thinking about poor Annie. I remember my broken arm so well. Not being
comfortable is NO fun. πŸ™
Love the bracelet party on your arm. Pretty!
A little Black Friday shopping for me. Nothing worth going out super
early this year so I took my time getting up, showering, making hot tea and
then heading out. I did see Christmas cards with *your* Whatever verse and
thought of you. πŸ™‚

michelle - meg,
i am cooleyfamily on IG. sorry your plans were foiled but glad you made lemonade outta those lemons. god is great all the time.
peace,
michelle

Andrea - “Redonk” and “Starbies” funny words! Laundry is my arch-enemy! WHERE does it come from ALL the time? Why? How? I don’t understand it!! I am impressed you have your kids do laundry–I should start, or maybe not! Ugh!

Kirsten J - Poor Annie – well, you’ll have to make next year a great Thanksgiving. Believe it or not, I went at midnight with my kids. My 22yo was going to take my daughter and her friend, but my husband thought better of that idea, and somehow that translated into hubby staying on the couch and me driving the kids. At least I took a little nap before. Target was not bad at all since we didn’t want electronics, then American Eagle and Aero were all ours as well. We drove through McDs at 2:30 and the girls proclaimed it “the best shopping trip ever”. And my brother-in-law took over pies this year so there was normal pumpkin, and a “Hoosier” pie – not bad, and thankfully no Splenda.

s - Hope the arm heals – poor thing!!

Ashley - Sean is also your TWIN!!!!! OMG I never noticed before how MUCH he looks like you! Like……EXACTLY LIKE YOU! πŸ™‚ cute!

Jacci in Ohio - I’m “mrsmogun” on Instagram, btw. Confusing to have multiple usernames, huh?
Have a great weekend!

Jacci in Ohio - It makes me happy to see you drinking out of my mug πŸ™‚ I think I mentioned this on IG, but my kids call that my Covenant Mug. I’ve told them before that it always reminds me of the promises of our God… our God Who never changes and is always faithful, even when we are faithless. So, it’s happy to me to see you with it. I drink my morning coffee from it almost every day.
Also, poor Annie πŸ™ She’s the same age as my middlest… breaks my heart to “see” her hurting for so long. Praying for her.
And thanks for the Waffle peek! I miss that dog! πŸ™‚

lorel - next year, baby! next year. we missed you too. πŸ™‚

Kerstie Pederson - No Black Friday shopping for me. My son BROKE HIS ARM yesterday! NOT EVEN KIDDING!!!
ER last night, Doc today, now sleepy time. πŸ˜‰

christy - So sorry that lil’Annie is in so much pain. Poor lil’ munchkin.
Went out last night & the lines were cra-azy, I decided to go back home. Then b/c I oculdn’t sleep went out about an hour later & was home by 11 with a few small items, but not the big item on my list. Scored that today, thank you Amazon! Hope you had a nice time, even though you were missing your momma & sis.

Kerry Wiebe - Went out and conquered! Love LOVE LOOVVVVEEE the black friday! I hope you found your kitchen aids πŸ™‚

Sarah{Handbags*N*Pigtails} - Hubby and I went BF shopping last night(after dropping the girls off at Nanny’s for a sleepover:)) and then again this morning. Last night was INSANE! We usually don’t go out until Friday afternoon but last night one of the stores was so crowded and so HOT that I nearly passed out.
Everyone was generally in good spirits though(which was a nice surprise after being a little taken aback by the ambulances at every store entrance). Except for one woman who loudly proclaimed behind us at one point “If I don’t get a F%$&^#@ TV I’m gonna rip someone’s head off. WOW.Some people scare me:)

Leadia Jarvis - Hope Annie’s feeling better. Hopefully we can continue our “no broken bones” streak at our house because that doesn’t sound fun. Did it happen on the trampoline? Say “no” because we have TWO! I went Black Friday (or technically Black Thursday/Friday) shopping for the first time yesterday. I was scared, but if you go in with a plan and don’t browse, it’s not that bad at all. I only slept 4 hours so far today. LOTS of coffee is in my future!

Ann Williams - LOVE that Annie is smiling even though she has had a tough week. πŸ™‚

Amy - Hey I have that same rainbow mug!! My favorite!
So sorry about poor Annie. Sometimes holidays just work out a little differently than planned, so I hear ya. Our Thanksgiving ended with a trip last night to the E.R. with my 7 year old son, who was having breathing difficulties from a piece of candy he ate (he is our peanut allergy kid). So I can commiserate. πŸ™
Hope Annie heals up quickly!!

Amy@littleforalittlewhile - Have fun, hope you get some good deals!
