HERE WE GO…

On Instagram this week I mentioned how I was missing my blog so here I am.
there’s too much to cover if I make myself go back and write about everything I skipped so I am starting with today.
I can tell you WHY I stopped blogging. There are several reasons – time, bigger kids, different season, etc.
But I think a huge part of it was feeling like I had no more words.
My energy for words was gone.
You’ve heard the saying “little kids – little problems, big kids – big problems”
For awhile… parenting big kids really felt like a punch in the gut.
The emotional energy being poured out all day every day took all that I had.
It’s not been a smooth & easy path so I really felt like I had no words left to say at the end of the day.
I felt defeated & exhausted.
I certainly don’t have it all figured out now but I have been able to find a new rhythm.
It sounds crazy but what has brought back my energy has been taking of our sweet foster baby this past year.
He is all light & joy & fun all day long!
Caring for him has been life giving for me and helps me smile 100 times a day.
He’s brought our whole family closer getting to love on him together.
There’s plenty of stress that comes along with foster care too (because of all the adults not Tiny) but with so much happiness surrounding me it is so much easier to handle the highs & lows of foster care, parenting and life!
So that is where I am today.  It may change tomorrow… who knows?!

Here’s a bunch of pics from the past few months!

Our daughter Lauren had a baby in July!  He is so much fun!
His name is Lowry.
It’s weird having a baby at the same time as your daughter… but weird is not bad.  🙂
Tiny’s favorite thing in the whole world is lawn mowers.
And getting to sit on it with Craig is better than anything!

who needs parks when you have a mower?

On my 43rd birthday I was serenaded by waiters singing mariachi and it scared Lowry!

Tiny can walk now (when he feels like it) and reading books is the way to his heart (unless you have a lawn mower…)

we
we celebrated Tiny’s 1st birthday! He came to our home when he was 6 days old.
He did not like the cake, was confused by the singing but really loved the new ride on toy that plays music.

Talby has had a full season of volleyball.
I’ll post all her volleyball pics on another post but these were from a tournament day where they won everything and played with Tiny inbetween all their games.

kansas views… at the end of my block.
I can’t take the cuteness!!!!

I got to spend a weekend at the Craft House with these friends.
I love these girls!!!

Sean’s (#53) also had a full football season…  more pics to come on that too.
He is a senior so football is over forever.
SO SAD!!!!

Craig & Sean went to a Chiefs game.
That’s A LOT of red!!!

Annie turned 14 – WHAT IS LIFE??
How is this possible?  She is just a tiny baby… how can she also be 14?
She and my dad share a birthday so we sang to them both and they sang to each other.

we made Tiny a crown out of the chip bag at Chipotle.
and wore him out with all of our birthday shopping.
i love wearing sleeping babies!!! their little kissy lips breathing baby breath on my neck??? HEAVEN!

Annie started basketball and has had 4 or 5 games already!

Talby turned 17.
She’s the sweetest kid!
NONE of her birthday gifts arrived in the mail on time so she had birthday WEEK – getting different packages each afternoon after school.
we went to dinner with the whole family to celebrate…not quite as easy now that we have another baby (Lowry) and a toddler who doesn’t want to sit at the table (normal).  But it was wonderful to be all together none the less.

Lowry & Tiny are 9 months apart.
Tiny is smallish/average for his age and Lowry is a tank.
They are so cute together.

So that is my post easing back in to blogging.
I want to FINALLY answer the loads of the questions I got about foster care.
There were over a hundred and it overwhelmed me.  Foster care itself overwhelms me on certain days…
so I gave up on the post.
but I will do it because there are kids out there that need a grown up to stand up for them.
It can help more of you consider foster care or helping a foster family so I will do it.

And as far as Tiny’s future with us… in the next week we should know a lot more.
I love him.
forever.
he’s changed our lives, our hearts and our family.

and he just woke up from his nap so I will be done with this post.

thanks for reading for all the years!

Michelle - So great to hear from you, Meg! I’ve been reading along for years…

Rebekah - I am giddy that you’re coming back to the blog!! Yay!! Your pictures and words always bring me joy and I know it’s the joy of Jesus shining through you!

Patti Mullican - Thanks for blogging! I love your blog and instagram feed and I am so inspired by you as an artist, mom, Jesus lover, etc. Blessings on you and yours this Christmas season! P.S. I hope you do a gift buying guide this year – I always end up purchase at least one or more items from your list! LOL

Karyn - I am glad you are back! Will you please post one of your gift giving or stocking stuffer ideas for Christmas! I love reading them.

Jenny B. - OH, wow!! This post was bittersweet for me. I mean, not really bitter, but there was a tinge of sadness because my oldest just turned 14, and he and Annie were so little back when I first started reading. Sigh… To quote you — time is a jerk. 😉 Also, Sean has changed SO much. He looks so grown up now! This just tells me I need to follow you on Instagram! Hello! Why have I not been?? I miss blogs, but IG is good too… Congrats on your grandbaby, and I hope things go well with Tiny and your family! Thanks for the update!

Beccy - Congratulations on your new Grandbaby!!! Parenting is not for the faint of
heart. Looking forward to your foster care post.

Becca Groves - I’m so glad you are posting on your blog again! Thank you for sharing this way! And I will be praying for Tiny this week with earnest prayers, for him and for all the adults making the decisions for him. And especially praying for you. Love and Peace to you.

Toni :0) - I have always loved your blog. The colors, the family, the babies, you are just fun and so inspiring. It brightens my day. Thank you for being a flashlight 🔦 in a depressing world. Look up Kristen Hampton on Facebook. She’s funny and joy filled and she will explain the flashlight. It’s because of you that we love Jim Gaffigan and got to see him last summer in person. God bless you for fostering Tiny. 💜

Andrea - Loved the post. Love your blog….love to follow you on insta…. update us on Tiny. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

Rachel Jeter - MEG! So glad to see you back on here blogging. Sometimes I browse thru your old posts. I’ve loved your blog since 2010! Praying for you guys on this foster care journey. What a blessing you are to Tiny and no doubt Tiny is blessing you. Lots of love from Arkansas and hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

Lindsay - So happy to see you back! Looking forward to more blog posts! ❤️

Erin - Love to you, Meg! Long time reader who is praying for you all and so thankful for each time you do share.

Linda - So happy to see you blogging. I know what you mean by having no energy after dealing with big kids! Wow it is tuff. But I love your blog and the happy spirit it always has. Glad you are back!

Dana - So good to see you on here, Meg! We have 6 kids and our youngest is 4, so I’ve always looked to you to have a glimpse into what life could look like in the future. I completely want to do what you’re doing when all our kids are bigger, too- foster a baby! I know I would end up wanting to adopt, but I’ll leave that part up to the Lord. What you are doing is so important! I too have been a little bit disillusioned by foster care and DHS, but these kids are the ones who lose when we give up because it’s too hard. Keep up the super important, life-changing, good work!

CathyMA - Love this update Megan ❤️

Michelle - I saw one or two other people say this, but I also have been reading your blog forever and I’m wigging out at how big your kids have gotten! Congrats on making it through (I feel like we all need congrats on just getting by sometimes.)

Michelle - Welcome back, Meg! I don’t feel like you’ve been too far because I follow you on Instagram but this was a lovely update and I was grateful to read it. I hope this week brings the best outcomes for everyone involved. Not sure there is such a thing, but as close as you can get it my wish for you and Tiny. xoxo

Kelly - I loved “catching up”. I pop back into my blog and I do love it when I do it. Blog as much or as little as you want! Kelly

Heather - I’m so happy you’re blogging again! I have followed you for YEARS and always look forward to reading your posts. They are real, encouraging, and always helpful, from parenting to paint colors! 😉 I look forward to your Christmas gift ideas for teen girls each year and my girls get great gifts from your suggestions.

I’ve had the hardest parenting year of my life. I’m raising two teenage girls (15 & 16). And while they are great girls, teenage years are HARD! I found myself wishing for the days of sippy cups and Dora the Explorer. But God is good and makes good of all things. Lifting your family up in prayer!

Blessings,
Heather

Kayla - I can complete relate to your reason for stepping away from blogging because I have done the same thing. We have 6 kids and blogging about our lives was easy and fun when they were little. Now they are big-ish….and I feel like I can’t share “their lives” or candid moments anymore without their permission. I also had to pick and choose my words carefully, which made it more like work than fun! But, I am happy to get an occasional glimpse into your lives – from someone who understands the struggle!

jennibell - I’m so glad that you are blogging!! I’ve missed you so much. . .but know how seasons change and all that. I’m rarely on Instagram but have kept up a bit through that. Great post. Happy Holidays!!!

Debbie H - Thanks for the post, Meg! LOVE all the photos! You must have even gotten out the BIG camera for the flowers and butterflies! 🙂 . Pray for you and Tiny that the best decisions are made. . . although I know from experience the system sure seems flawed. Hugs! And thanks for sharing yourself with the “rest” of us. So great to have you “back”. Happy Thanksgiving to your entire family. We all have so much to be grateful for. xoxo

Melissa - Are you going to adopt Tiny?

Lorri - Welcome back to this wonderful home you have made here on the Web and invited all of in for a visit. Thank you for sharing your home, business, family and journey these many years. Please know total strangers are out here rooting for you and your family, and sending prayers to all. God bless.

Tracy - So happy to read your stories again!! Makes me so happy! Can’t wait for the next post 🙂

Lisa - I feel like a creeper saying this but I randomly discovered your blog when Annie was like 4 years old! Which means I’ve been following your life for 10 years. The internet is a weird place. But I do want you to know your blog and Instagram and family has been an encouragment to me. Even your story of getting pregnant with your oldest. My 17 year old is pregnant and due soon. Your story encourages my mama’s heart! Also your comments about big kids is spot on. So thankful their stories don’t end during those teenage years. Xoxo

Beth - Love this and bless you for fostering!!
Nice to read about what you have been up to lately. I’ve been reading since tabby was like 3!!!

Shannon - Thanks for posting Meg. As the parent of four kiddos 13-24 I needed to hear this. I thought I was tired when my kids were little, but I had no how emotionally exhausting it is to parent big kids. Hang in there and know you are not alone!

Sue - Loved this. Thanks for the update! Thanks, too, for the confirmation that parenting big kids can be as draining as it has been for me! Will look forward to more whenever you’re able to post. Absolutely love seeing and hearing about Tiny.

stephanie ackerman - love EVERYTHING about this post..love you more and love #tiny even a little bit more than all of that #auntiesteph

liz c. - So fun to see a post from you, and so many beautiful photos. Tiny and Lowry are both darling. Sending good wishes to you and your family.

Tiffany - My energy for words was gone. – Sheesh, I hear you. But delighted to hear that you have more energy and looking forward to the Foster Care information.

Kristen - I’m newish here. I started following your Instagram because of Selah Signs. Visiting the craft house is on my bucket list! I didn’t even know you had a blog. But I feel like I could have written this. Except for the foster baby and the first grandchild. I have a kid who recently turned 17 and another who is 13. And another teen in the middle. I used to keep a blog too. And in this different season of motherhood, there’s just not words. But I sense God is doing something big. I don’t know what it is yet, but maybe it will come with a return to my blog.

Susan - So glad to be reading this!

Amanda - Life at Cloverhill - Lovely catch up. Nice to see everyone is doing so well 🙂

Melissa - Welcome back!

Cara - So glad you are back!!!!!

Rachel - So lovely to read your words again – I’ve missed your blog 👍😄

Jennifer - Welcome back! It was the perfect post. Thank you!

Kim - Just wanted to say “you’ve got this”. I don’t have teenagers yet but my 3yo is giving me a run for my money. Glad you came back to this space, it will be here when you have time for it. No pressure. 🙂

Kathi - Thanks for the post! I’ve missed you, Instagram just isn’t the same as a good old fashioned blog post:)

Lynette - I am so glad you posted. I so enjoy your words and your pictures are always so colorful! I have five kids, ages 5-16 (17 at the end of the month) and while the teen years are so much better in many ways than I anticipated, I love my teen girls, it is also such a challenging parenting season. We are so busy and life is full of weighty issues. In some ways teens feel just as needy as toddlers but their needs are more emotionally draining. I find myself completely done in at the end of most days!!! Mommying is hard. 😊 So inspired by your foster care story. It’s always been a dream of mine to be a foster mom.

Michelle - Thanks for sharing! I loved seeing all the pics!

Rachelle - So glad you are back. Much love and light.

Lisa Anderson - It made me so happy to read this post. I’ve missed your blog. Thank you so much for being honest about the big kids, big problems. I feel ya and sometimes I think I’m the only one having problems. It’s good to be reminded I’m maybe normal. Love your beautiful family and adventure with Tiny. Thanks for giving us the time!

Emily McNulty - Thank you for blogging again! I sure have missed you🌻

Kimberlee - I hope it felt good to write that. It felt great to read it! ♥️

Sara Neufeld - So good! Love reading the update! Reminds me of the old days when I read your blog every single day and Annie was a preschooler! Time just flies on by. Have a great weekend!

Shanna - Loved loved loved this wonderful update! It’s so beautiful to see this season of your life and all the joy you bring to it!!

Rebecca W - Thanks for posting all these years!

Jenn - Loved reading this post and seeing a bit of family life – thanks for sharing!

Laura - I loved reading this! I love your blog and I have missed it 🙂

Astrid - <3 Thank you so much for returning and sharing bits and pieces of your life with us. I truly have missed reading your posts. (PS…you helped to inspire me to paint our stairs in rainbow colors <3 )
I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts and learning more about foster care.

Amy - Yay!! I’ve missed your blog. Thanks for sharing!

Rita - So nice to catch up a bit! Good luck with it all!

Angela - This made my day!! Your family has grown so much! I was thinking about all your wonderful Christmas posts today while I was putting up our tree. So glad to see you back at it!

Catherine - Welcome back!!! So nice to read a post! Thanks for sharing so much! Life can keep us really busy and trying hard to figure out all that comes our way. ❤️❤️❤️

Kelly - Love all those sweet pictures and all the color and rainbows we know you for!

Rachel Boers - So glad you are “back.” Yes, life with “bigs” is a challenge, and in a different way than the physical exhaustion that came when the kids were little. And the stakes are so much higher too! Its not always easy (or right!) to ignore that and act like everything is fine, yet you have to respect their privacy at the same time, which can feel deceptive. Not to mention there is a grieving when kid after kid leaves the nest. Every year there is a new normal, not just for me and my husband, but also for the kids left at home. I’ve said to my husband over the past five years, “I just don’t know how much more change I can take!” It’s a season of transition, and while it’s necessary, and, in the end, good, it’s also still messy and JUST PLAIN HARD. But I’ve learned that I can’t let it steal my joy, and it looks like you’ve learned that too! There are still lots of great things happening, of course, and I am getting better at being content in this season of life. Please keep writing!

Mary Byberg - welcome back xo you were missed

more summer memories

we only made it to this waterfall once this summer!
that’s a total bummer.
we never know what we will find when we turn down the path towards the water.
this year the water level was low so there was not much to explore.
but being outside on a beautiful day is always good!
and we added this day to the many memories of coming here together.

we even got kobe to try swimming for the first time!
he hated it.

we tried to watch the sunset as much as possible from our firepit.
sometimes that included margaritas… sometimes chickens… sometimes both.
and sometimes we’d even have s’mores and an actual fire.

i used my stash of linens and cutter quilts to recover all the craft house porch cushions.
it felt great to use my sewing machine again!
it had been way too long since i had gotten that out.

i did SO MUCH GARDENING this summer!
i hope with all my heart that it all comes back next year – or at least 75% of it!!
it doesn’t look great this year but next year it might fill in and be fabulous.
fingers crossed.

annie learned to use the riding mower this summer!

sean turned 17 years old!
i think that is pretty rude of him to just keep growing up without my permission… just kidding.
he is a super fun kid.
i enjoy spending time with him so much!

we spent our 4th of july very differently than ever before!
we were in a tiny theater and we were in the 7th row.
it was THE BEST CONCERT!!!
it was surreal…. to be so close and for them to sound so incredibly good!
and craig sang every word to every song.
and i love that.

Laura Oyler - Can we talk about what’s going on with Sean’s cake? Because that looks delicious!

Tam - Love all the pictures ♥️♥️

Kerri - We attended our first concert at the Stiefel just last night (we’re in Ellsworth). What a great, intimate venue!

Katie - Wondering what kind of cake that is for Sean’s birthday – it looks like ice cream, but isn’t melty. Looks delicious! Please share!

Kacy - I love the Stiefel Theater. And the Avett Brothers. We just moved to Nebraska from Beloit, KS and we ALMOST bought tickets to that show, but didn’t quite know how moved/settled we’d be. We did see a Michael W Smith Christmas Concert there a few years ago that was incredible though. We sat up in the balcony and felt just as close.

summer is here!

kansas in the end of may and beginning of june is THE BEST!
Yellow fields of wheat everywhere you go!

talby got to go to prom!
she went with a group of friends and had a really fun time.

picking out her dress was actually lots of fun!
annie came along and we put her in charge of hanging the dresses back on the hanger.
i was in charge of getting the next dress off of the hanger and ready to put on.
#teamwork
and then we wished annie needed a gown for something special too because this one was SO cute!

a sleepy Friday night at our house while “watching” the NBA finals.

Chickens and peonies! two of my favorite things!

these black & white ones are two of the “babies” – getting so big.

love my shirt from All Good Things Collective!  It’s really really soft!

i think i was trying to take a picture of the house being really clean but these guys wanted a pic instead.
they are cuter than a clean house anyway.

this spring in the flower beds, daisies came up EVERYWHERE!
which was fine with me!
and ladybugs were everywhere too – that’s for good luck,  right?

a wheatfield before it was yellow on a stormy day.
i drive this road alllll the time.

craig had a birthday and we can’t remember doing anything!
i took this picture of the donuts so i know we had that – but otherwise we have completely forgotten.
must be our age…

the building behind him is the little bitty hospital where he was born.
we were in that small town for a track meet just before his birthday and i had him pose for this memory.
🙂

i spray painted an old bed for the Craft House last week in this beautiful bright sun yellow.
it made me feel so happy!
and all that pom pom trim at hobby lobby always make me smile.

scott’s birthday is just after craig’s.
to celebrate we ended up at the zoo!
interesting choice for a 19 year old’s birthday but it was fun and something we do much anymore now that they are getting so much older.
when we arrived we found out it was also a Cinco De Mayo festival going on!
to get from one area to another at the zoo our whole family had to walk single file straight through the dance floor FULL of people dancing and celebrating to a very loud live band… it was so funny!
Scott chose Texas Roadhouse for his birthday dinner and we even go him to ride the birthday saddle!
i used to cook their favorite meal for their birthdays but now we go out to eat at the restaurant of their choice.
it’s just easier with kids not living at home, busy schedules of teens and all that goes along with that.
and then after dinner – i make them take a selfie.
because i can!

happy birthday scotty boy!

i had craig teach me how to use the jigsaw!
power tools make crafting even more fun!

annie learned to use the riding mower last week!
she was very cautious (s l o w) but there’s nothing wrong with that.
hopefully she’ll want to do it more than just that one time.
this below was the view behind me when taking that picture of annie – quite dramatic!

the peonies at the craft house are always so gorgeous.
And half the house still has the old purple & cream trim while the other half is sporting the new navy & white!
Painting a house is such a long process!

we took all three of these nerds to the vet at one time.
#dumb
but at least it’s over and they are up to date on their vaccinations.

talby competed in track all year in the 300 hurdles & 100 hurdles.
she’s the blurry one on the right side of the pic.
but hey… check out that sunset!

the girls 4×4 relay team made it all the way to State!
Talby was an alternate for this team.
three of the four girls on that state team were freshmen!
can’t wait to watch them over these next three years – they are so fast!

meixcan food on mother’s day for the win!
and clearly we liked our meals – clean plate club.
also i took a 3 hour nap that day!
craig painted the guest room for me and arranged for new flooring to be put in it as my mother’s day gift.
i was definitely happy about that.
annie knows that starbucks is my favorite and got me a gift card (to take her there – ha!)

on the last week of school annie had a choir concert.
we curled her hair and put on a little makeup and suddenly she was 20 years old!
what the heck?
slow down with all this growing-up-at-warp-speed stuff kids!
it’s not nice.

see what i mean?
grown!

but not too grown to bring home giant frogs from the pond nearby just for fun.
this was the biggest frog i’ve seen/held in my life.

first summer campfire in the back yard fire pit.
this spot is pure loveliness.
we will be watching the sunset as many times as we can from this spot.

and these are all my plants i have to plant.
i did put about 1/3 of them in the ground already but the rest is waiting patiently for me to get my act together!
thankfully i like gardening a lot – not digging out the rocks and the roots… just regular flower planting.
and speaking of that – i need to go water these pots right now.

Sarah D - I’ve been following your blog for years and check in every once in a while. I cannot believe how fast kids grow! My 13 year old is taller than me now at 5’10! God bless you in your journey! Thanks for still blogging! I love taking photos and you have SO many great photos!

meg duerksen - HI meredith! I got that rug about 2 or 3 months ago from homedepot.com!

Ann - Yea for Talbys modest dress!!!! How very classy!!!

meredith - Great pics Meg! Can you tell me where you got the rug that’s in your family room? Thanks! 🙂

Kathy L - What a lovely post……lots going on and beautiful pics!!

Dana Powell - I just love your happy blog. 🙂 And today I was doing laundry and thought ‘that was dumb’…and instantly thought of you. It should be your trademark phrase!!

Lorri - Love this post! A sweet, happy peek inside family life. Happy summer!

february is over???

i have tried to sit down to blog for a long time!
but i just couldn’t get to it… sports and dinner and work and chores and blah blah blah!
crazy!
but here’s an update on my world.
TWINNING! the boys and the girls.

Lauren turned 22!
it’s wild to even think about how we have a “child” that age!
we took her to lunch and of course… SAM’S Club for groceries.
i love having us all together even if it’s just for a few hours.
going out to eat with 5 big kids/young adults is actually really fun!

Craig & Annie got to enjoy a WSU Shockers basketball game last week and just happened to be right behind Fred Vanvleet & Ron Baker!
my friend sent me the picture from the shockers IG with the text “what the heck?!”
and i said “what? that they are at the game?”
she said “THAT’S RON BAKER!” and i said “i’m not sure who that is but it sounds exciting!”
ha ha ha!
i was quickly schooled on WHO they were – former WSU players who are now in the NBA.

i saw this sign on @saltybison‘s instagram and immediately clicked over and ordered it.
🙂
it just felt right.
it will hang among my fun pics in our bathroom.

lots of love for mr. duerksen – he’s a keeper!

regular moments – chatting and laughing while making school lunches.
this was my “office” last week… all the furniture pulled together to keep the dogs from bugging me.
it didn’t quite work.
my thrift shop embroidery score!
i thought i would put it at the Craft House but i am liking it here at my house for now.

my friend Pam has been back in the states for a few months and heads back to Liberia on Monday.
that is sad for me and happy for her.
before she leaves she made sure to come over and teach me how to make cinnamon rolls!!!
it wasn’t as hard as i thought!  i was super proud of these pans of yumminess!
and we made cheesecake too – because it’s THE pam of Pam’s cheesecake.
we couldn’t NOT make that!

last week i did something completely new for me – i cooked for a 4 day retreat at the craft house!
Stephanie Ackerman hosted the Creative Soul Retreat at the Craft House with Julie Carson as her speaker.
16 women… just like Camp Create but instead of leading the crafting projects i was in the kitchen making 3 meals a day.
it was very different but i liked it very much!
i tried to be as organized as i could be with lists and more lists.
i enjoyed being at the house with the group but in a totally different role.
and i always love spending time with Stephanie!
Royer’s Pie Haven sent a box of mini pies!
just a whole bunch of pies in a box – you should totally order these for a party!
so darn cute!
oh… and delicious too!

these were some fun ladies to cook for!
and she’s having another retreat in October – spots are open now!

and since i got to spend so much time at the Craft House last week – i took more pictures!

“abundant need” sign is from jaxnblvd.com.the 2017 calendar for the Craft House Rentals  is almost completely booked!
if you were wanting to come with your group these are the only dates left:

july 21 – 23
august 11 – 13
november 24-26 (thanksgiving weekend)  last year all the women of a family rented it, made crafts AND did their black friday shopping too!
such a fun idea! maybe your family should do that this year?!!!

and possibly october 27-29 – because it is marked “Reserved”  but i cannot figure out WHO booked this weekend so i am 95% sure i just wrote down the wrong dates.
if it’s YOUR group that reserved it – please please please email me right away.
i have searched through every form of contacts i have and cannot find anyone asking for that weekend.

and if you want any of the other dates listed let me know!  🙂

Cassandra Heck - That “Abundant” sign <3 <3 <3 those words are beautiful, love it!!

Karly - Dear Meg, I have followed your blog for probably 7 years. I remember bfirst coming across your colorful blog when I was an art teacher! Somehow a link brought me to a cute project you did with your kids ( I think it had rainbows or turtles in it)! Anyways I have always checked back in every week or so to see all of your inspirational posts and adorable family. It’s hard for me to believe how big your kids are getting. I am still at the beginning of the parenting phase. I have a 1.5 year old and almost 4 year old. Thank you for blogging and showing us a little bit of your life! One day when the kids get older I am going to come to the Crafthouse for a weekend! 🎨🌈❤🌻

meg duerksen - KatyO, Mary & Michelle M – i purchased that sign from jaxnblvd.com! They have hundreds of awesome signs!

KatyO - I came to the comments to ask about that “Abundant Need” sign as well! It is FANTASTIC!

Mary - I’m with Michelle M – could you please share where you got the “there is an abundant need” sign? Love it! -Mary

Michelle M - I love your updates and photos. Your life is colorful!

Please tell me where to get the There is an abundant sign from. Al I think it is you who has another sign on the stairs that I love. Can you tell me who made that one too-if it is you.

Thanks,
Michelle

cindy b. - loved my four-day weekend at the Craft House with Stephanie and Julie! Meg, you were a fantastic chef 🙂 thanks for loving on us! ALL of the food was great!!

happy new year!

2016 was a rough year it seemed.
i heard that over and over every where i went.
but it was so good too!
here’s my favorite pics from 2016 all together in one spot.   🙂

i always feel hopeful with the start of a new year…new calendar…a fresh start.
there’s a few big adventures i want to accomplish this coming year.

Kathi - Thanks for sharing for all these years! I love to see an email from FeedBlitz. You inspire me!

meg duerksen - oh Shar… we have plenty of problems – trust me! but we do have lots of fun too! thanks for reading!

meg duerksen - Jennibell – it’s called Praise Like Fireworks by Rend Collective. They are on repeat over here all the time so it had to be the band i choose. 🙂

heidi - Your blog was the first one I ever read and it is still my absolute favorite. You are such an inspiration!!!! Thank you for everything you have done for my father-in-law’s business. What a blessing you are to the entire world!

jennibell - Very fun!!! Looks like a great year for your crew!! What is the music/song you were playing?

Tracy Koeppen - Thank you, Meg, for writing this blog!! And taking beautiful pics!! I love to follow along.

It makes me sad whenever I hear another mention of 2016 being a “terrible year”. We had a great year!!

Lori - That was so fun! Love your photos, and I loved that there were tiny videos tucked in there 🙂 Happy new year!

jill - Love your blog and all of your t shirts you wear!

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - Happy New Years! Have a great, great year!

Monica - Thanks for your blog, I love reading it and I’m always inspired by you and your family pictures are so nice. Thanks so much

Heather S. - Yep – I’m one of those “rough year” people. It truly held so much good for us, but it ended on such a hard note with the death of one of our very best friends, only 47 years of age. It has been a very hard month. I am looking forward to moving forward – into 2017 with healing!

i got lost in the fall photos and blog posts over the last 9 years.  🙂
and then got into the photo albums too.
i couldn’t find ALL of our halloweens because half of our photo albums are still at the Craft House – oops.
we have had 21 Halloweens – that is a lot of costumes and pumpkins!

Your photos are great. I love that the costumes varied from homemade to store bought to everything in between. That’s the way our Halloweens are. It sure makes for some fun photos!

september is over???

img_4480
one of my top favorite summer/fall experiences is finding a sunflower field.
and some years i never do.
in case you don’t know… sunflowers are a crop that farmers plant like they would with wheat or corn or soybeans.
they are BEAUTIFUL but serve a purpose with their seeds.
“the seeds are used to make cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings, snack food, hair oil, swine and poultry feed, fireplace logs and low-grade furnace fuel.” – i googled that.
they are always in different fields each year – which is why they can be hard to find.
i have yet to see sunflowers in the same field two summers in a row… but i don’t have the knowledge to explain exactly why that is.
it has to do with dirt and stuff.  (that’s a farmer-y word – “stuff”)
we get lots of questions when people come to kansas about sunflowers so i am just passing on my helpful info.
ha ha ha
fullsizerender-21img_4566
talby was my willing model.
fullsizerender-8fullsizerender-30
seriously though????
this was with my phone and the sun had just set.
i wish we’d taken it with the big camera 10 minutes earlier.

waffle is such a lover.

fullsizerender-27six
this super cute puffy vest is at Sam’s club!  whaaaat?!
GO GET ONE!!!
and take a selfie for your friends in the feminine products & bread aisle like me!

fullsizerender-24twelve
donuts are my weakness…. they are just too pretty!!!

sean is about halfway through his football season.
i am actually starting to catch on to what is going on out there!

img_3644
scotty stopped by one of talby’s volleyball games.
i was trying not to hug him TOO much.
but i can’t help myself.
ten
the second time i went out to photograph the sunflower field i had a wonderful experience.
i was alone and walked out into the field about 50 feet maybe.
i was clicking away with my camera and i noticed a monarch fluttering around me.
then i stopped looking through my screen and looked at the field and there were butterflies EVERYWHERE!
it was so quiet.  the only sound was the leaves flapping, bees buzzing and butterflies wings flapping.
it felt like a dream.
img_4236
garden spiders are so gross and so cool.
everyone says they are harmless but they still creep me out so much.
this one was all the way at the back of the yard by the chicken coop so i felt okay about it.
it was as big as my palm.
{{{{shudder}}}}
fiveimg_5653
these yellow flowers are weeds/wildflowers that are 7 feet tall in the back yard.
and that sun really did look like that.
i had to edit it my photo a lot to get that to show up but that is pretty much exactly what my eyes saw!
fourwaffle was not in the mood for selfies.
hugs for scott after he stopped by the house for a haircut.  🙂

fullsizerender-70
img_260415
talby got to go to her first homecoming dance.
it’s been a long time since i have dressed shopped with a teen.
the thing i forgot is that the stores are full of other teens shopping as well.
and it’s loud.
and they slam their dressing room doors over and over.
and play music on their phones.
oy veh!
but it was fun to spend time with talby and find a pretty dress!

fullsizerender-68
sean is in red… third one in that is bent down on the ground.
i don’t know his position.
i just know his number.
i focus on that.
“where’s #53?”  that is pretty much ALL i think about during his games.
it’s working for me.

waffle always prances around so happily after a haircut.

i bought it at sams when i bought that buffalo check vest.  🙂

i had a birthday last week.
my parents were visiting to help me celebrate.
i got my hair colored that day too!
i haven’t colored my hair for three years and made the decision to do it for some self care.
i remembered how much i like getting something new – a cut or a color – so i booked it.
i almost cancelled 20 different times.
money… time… upkeep… fear… energy….  but in the end i went!
woo-hoo!
it doesn’t look too different but it’s a little darker… with some red in there.
but it is shiny and fresh and healthy now and that feels great!
yay for self care!!!
nineimg_5240
my friend shelley sent me a box of rainbow frosted sugar cookies!
what in the world???
it was the sweetest gift!
literally.
i shared a few but i made sure i got the most!
seven
i also got the most amazing vintage green polka dot quilt/blanket in the mail from a friend.
it was such a wild birthday surprise!
i couldn’t love it more!

and there was cake and candles and singing happy birthday of course.

forty one.
here’s hoping forty one is a year of learning and graciously accepting growth and change.
and lots of fun.
and losing 20 pounds and becoming a marathon runner/mountain climber/disco queen.
HA HA HA!
just kidding!

mostly.

Kathi - Meg, you look beautiful! Your kids look happy. Waffle is such a dork 😉 The selfie with his eyes closed is perfect! Thanks for sharing!

Melissa - Meg, I always love your beautiful posts full of happy pictures but you SERIOUSLY HAVE to post a trigger warning or something before you post a spider like that again! I’m going to read the rest of your posts half-terrified that another spider picture is going to pop up!! And now I know I can never move to Oklahoma.(Only kind of kidding.)
