I know it may sound corny… like the Sally Stuthers commercials from when we were kids.
But truly – just one dollar a day CAN change lives when we are intentional.
I love working with organizations that make a difference!
One group I have worked with, traveled with and LOVE is called The Adventure Project!
They are working hard every day to create jobs to empower those in poverty.
Here are some snippets from their website:
What people want most in this world is the opportunity to thrive.
Not with handouts, but by using their own two hands.
Economic growth is the key to lifting communities from poverty to prosperity.
The Adventure Project gives people the tools, education and resources to become entrepreneurs, so they can serve their own communities with improved health, decreased hunger, a safer environment and clean water.
They “add venture.”
WE FOCUS ON THE
WORLD’S GREATEST ISSUES AFFECTING
PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY:
THE ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH, HUNGER AND WATER.
THEN, WE INVEST IN ENTREPRENEURIAL SOLUTIONS THAT SAVE CHILDREN’S LIVES.
ENVIRONMENT ————————————————————————-
Problem
Cooking over open fires is one of the world’s biggest – but least known – killers. Four million people die each year from breathing in toxic cooking smoke.
Opportunity
Stoves are made locally and sold by men and women in Kenya. Both masons and vendors earn commission for every sale. Each stove saves a family 20% of their daily expenses, because they use 50% less charcoal per day. One stove saves six trees from being turned into charcoal each year and reduces carbon emissions by 1.5 tons.
HEALTH ———————————————————————-
Problem
Every minute, six children die in the developing world because they do not have access to basic medicines – treatments that cost less than a cup of coffee.
Opportunity
Train local leaders to become health care agents, so they can earn a living selling over 60 products at affordable prices. Each person cares for approximately 800 people in their community, giving special attention to pregnant mothers and young children. Health care agents have reduced child mortality by 25% in their communities.
HUNGER ———————————————————————
Problem
80% of the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa work as rural farmers. Each night, 75% of their children go hungry because they struggle to grow enough to feed their families.
Opportunity
12-15 million farmers in Africa would benefit from irrigation. One irrigation pump can lift a farmer and his family out of poverty and into the middle class in as little as one harvest. On average, each farmer grows enough to sell produce to 50 community members, and earns enough to send one child to school for the first time.
WATER ————————————————————————
Problem
Over one-third of all wells drilled in the last twenty years are now broken – 50,000 are currently broken in Africa alone.
Opportunity
Training local well mechanics to fix and maintain wells is the most sustainable way to ensure wells are always working so people have access to clean water. Mechanics earn an income from the fixing and maintaining wells.
EACH ENTREPRENEUR LEADS THEIR OWN COMMUNITY TOWARD A SAFER ENVIRONMENT, IMPROVED HEALTH, BETTER FOOD, AND CLEAN WATER.
They are the heroes. You are the catalyst.
INNOVATION
The Adventure Project takes calculated risks. Because we want to end extreme poverty as efficiently as possible, we spend considerable time identifying and researching new ways of working. We are not afraid to try something new, if it means a breakthrough that could save millions of lives.
We mitigate risks by supporting small pilot projects, first. If successful, we stick with them to help them scale.
I JUST LOVE ALL OF THIS!!!!
So here’s the deal:
The Adventure Project is having a contest right now with the prize of a trip to Kenya!!
Talk about a DREAM COME TRUE for me!
(I realize not everyone reading this would want to go on this trip… but I DO!)
Getting to meet the entrepreneurs that are working with The Adventure Project?
YESSSSSS!
If you believe in the work The Adventure Project is doing and would like to commit to $1 a day… you can click here and sign up to donate.
And if you do… then I get one more chance at winning that trip.
BUT the great news is… SO DO YOU!
Everyone who joins in giving to The Adventure Project gets their name in the drawing.
And if you win… I would be so happy for you – seriously – total happy dance for you I promise!
Maybe we will BOTH WIN???!!!
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
I don’t even like to think about all the ways I waste $1 every single day.
Sighhhhh.
I much prefer to think of ways of being intentional with $1 a day.
Mine is going to help farmers in Kenya irrigate their crops this quarter!
BOOM!
JOIN ME! Let’s be world changers together!
The contest ends on Friday so don’t delay.
