my husband is going to die when he sees this.
and probably my grandma and my mother.
but i really do want to keep it real.
i show pictures of my house looking pretty and clean
but in REALaity…i am surrounded by mess…
most of the time.
my constant never-ending laundry pile…
not my mess but i still see it.
this is my mess.
this is my laundry to put away.
that is my suitcase with my scrapbook supplies from my trip 2 weeks ago.
my bed un-made.
my craft room…ridiculous.
and my sink.
it always looks like this.
even if we get the dishes done…
5 minutes later there is another dish!
i am a mess.
just thought i should let you know.
Chrissie - I just wanted to say that I stumbled across your blog this morning and I have been reading every entry since you began. At first I was drawn to your journal because I love old homes, but then I met your children and love how you share them.
As far as the messy home goes, you live there. God has been good to you in that you are blessed to have all those children you give that lived in look to your home and dirty dishes just mean that you have plenty to eat.
BTW, if blogs had been around 24yrs ago I could have given you a run on the Naughty Baby. My own naughty baby is now in college, but she put me through many challenges as a young mom. She was the last child I could have and I treasure her for that without her my life would have been boring. So enjoy your baby.
Take care, Chrissie
Aimee - I want to know how you get thirty some stinkin’ comments on a messy house! Like this is something new. Please. Love ya.
melissa @ the inspired room - Yeah, my most popular post probably ever was of the ugliest hallway in my house when it was littered with a dead giraffe, a bunch of blankets, toys, and the vacuum cleaner we were using to suck up the dead mouse. 🙂 I guess we can all relate to real life, eh? 🙂
Linda - Oh…thank goodness!! Honestly, your home is my dream home and ALWAYS looks like it is perfect and magazine ready. I always felt that the fun you all have still seemed to lend itself to incidental, photographable… stylish mess, if you will! I feel soooo much better now..is that pathetic or what??!!
Love, love, love your blog!! Even more, now…
Linda
Chaos-Jamie - This post absolutely MAKES MY DAY!
Tonight Brent suggested I clean the bathroom. And then suggested it again. I wanted to pelt him.
Off subject: My kids adamantly deny running into the road. I told them it would be hard to mistake them in Hillsboro, but they deny it anyway. I’m calling Darrell to get the scoop. HA! Glad you didn’t smush my darlin’s.
Gabrielle - but I bet you have happy kids…and they are colorful and creative..I wish I could be more like that…I really do…to the left of me as I type this…is the dining room table with ketchup stains from last nights dinner and and syrup from the pancakes this morning…it is knawing on me to clean it up….but I’m so tired from menapausal lack of sleep…and I have had 3 cups of and still I need something stronger…latte anyone?
Tiffany - Thank you soooo much for posting this, my house pretty much looks the same, I thought I was the only one… lol
Queenie Bee - Thank you, thank you, thank you! And I thought it was just me with these issues! I’m ready to send my kiddos back to public school next year…and homeschooling is NOT the problem…it’s my cluttered HOUSE that’s the problem! LOL! It just seems never ending. Hey, but it does remind me of a wonderful quote that I once read: “ONE CANNOT BE CREATIVE AND TIDY AT THE SAME TIME!” Isn’t that sooooo true?! Thanks for posting!
Melanie - We all feel your pain!
Jennie W. - Meg–I can’t thank you enough for this post. So, I’m not the only one whose house looks like this 99.9% of the time? PHEW!
Andrea - Oh I love you for this post. It takes the shame out of my secret life!
traci - oh meg – i love how you show your real life. thanks. it makes me feel good. i should follow your lead and take a few “real” photos around here tomorrow. my laundry is caught up, but the kids’ room are awful and i thing we have a “famous footwear” store on our front porch. life is crazy and cleaning is the least fun part of it – so, don’t do it. there are more important things.
jeanetta - do you know the expelling sigh of relief that just left me? i’m always a mess and its always refreshing to be reminded there are others out there too.
Sara - Oh Meg, I feel your pain. I have a similar but smaller scale mess AND a dirt front yard. Usually the house is “presentable” for birthdays and planned gatherings only. Much to my dismay. Instead of cleaning, I usually head down to the studio at night and paint. Ya Gotta Have Priorities!!!!!!!!
Dana D - Your house does normally look beautiful on your blog, but I love these photos, too! It shows us that you’re human! I think we all have days when our homes are out of control. I’m currently experiencing about my 12th day straight of chaos in my house! Hee! Hee!
Love that you keep it real!
Holly - Oh, thank you!
Love this post and your blog in general. I have the fun piles here at home with my husband & 3 kids too. That’s just life at this point in our lives.
Have to say that even your piles are pretty…and colorful. =-)
Your photos are always so lovely too. Great eye for beauty, you have. =-)
kristin - hee hee hee.
now that is real.
and familiar.
i should do that.
Gini - come on over to my house, girl…..I, unlike you, have only shot pictures of my “heaping piles of laundry” – not the rest of my house. I am not ready to put it out there to all my friends that I am really not what they think I am!! right on, for keeping it real!
traci - this is exactly why everyone just loves your blog!!! When you have five kids a house just wont be clean all the time if every..lol
Regardless of a little bit of a mess your house is just GORGEOUS!!!
holly - I have 5 kids too and I can tell you I KNOW!!!! You missed all the shoes that they take off and don’t put in the shoe rack by the door! Thank you for being real- I start feeling like I am a slob- but you are too (Insert sweet sisterly laughing)
Sarah Keith - Oh Isn’t that the truth! One day when I was taking “pretty pics” for my post my husband said, “Why don’t you take a pic of the golden retriever hair rolling down the hallway, or the spill on the sofa, or all the laundry waiting to be folded! That’s why blog land is so fun I told him! It’s to ESCAPE for a bit!
Lanny Stanard - Hey megan, to bad I don’t live closer I clean house for a living and would love to help! have fun I’ll be thinking of you!
Lanny.

cynthia - i wouldn’t feel the slightest bit bad…everyone’s house looks like at one time or another, if not…they’re lying!
i can’t imagine how much laundry you have…there are only 3 of us and i do it almost every day!
which means…that there is a pile of laundry to fold and put away in our living room all the time!
chris - Ah ha! you’re one of us, well the outward rooms look fine here , but beware of closets cupboards and my laundry craft storage area, its the lack of free time to organize as you go , sometimes , ok a lot of times you just have to toss and get onto something else more pressing , oh plus I hate laundry especially putting it away , I need more closet organizers .
Now you are making me want to cleam more, I am recalling all my bad closets:(
Kim - Thanks for keeping it real!
jerusalem - oh honey I am so glad to see someone else leaving their suitcase a mess for more than a day! Their are always “decorative” laundry and dish piles around here! And I only have half the kids you do!! There is beauty in the mess – it’s called life! Happy Weekend!
lulu sparkles - tee hee! totally love this,I am so tired of seeing perfectness in blogs. “get real” photos make us all feel so much better about our messy little lives~THANK YOU! happy weekend 🙂
Brenis - Oh Meg! I feel your pain! Laundry is my arch nemisis! LOL! It’s never ending, and even when you are washing, drying and folding all day, all week, there is always MORE! You have one more kid than we do, thus what… another closet full of laundry?
If you ever figure out something that WORKS to keep up, please shout it from the rooftops so the rest of us can benefit too! LOL
Shelly - Don’t feel bad…
That’s how my house is right now too. And if we were to get a phone call that someone will be coming over for a surprise visit, then my room is the catch-all for everything… to add to the clutter in there =)
Lee Ann - Oh Thank you! I always tell my husband, “I think the laundry ferry will come today.” Somehow she skips over my house a lot though. And the dishes…who can keep up? Sometimes I do good until the dishwasher is full. Then they pile up. Then it becomes such a big job to actually unload AND reload and by that time there’s so many dishes that the dishwasher is full again and the cycle continues. You’re not alone and see how many “thank you’s” you received for showing us that?
Blanca - Believe me you are not alone that is exactly how my house looks right now. I’ll get to it this weekend at least I hope I do.
Blanca
Andrea - Whew! I am not the only one. I don’t mind, well ok i do, but the part that bothers me the most is the constant dishes in the sink…….always……..I wish, sometimes that I was Jane Jetson….that robot housekeeper of hers kept things ship shape always……LOL
Pattie - I used to occasionally hit the laundry mat just so I could have all the clothes done at once. I would take my book and Sonic Dr Pepper, tons of quarters and just stay for the afternoon. Those who know me laughed because I have an absolute phobia of germs in public places but, hey sometimes you just have to deal!!
Tonya - yup…that looks about right…
(love this post!)
Tonya
mom - No I am not going to die – I’ve seen it and helped clean it. Good luck
April - OH my gosh…I feel so much better…now. -thanks
amanda az - and we love you for it. looks like my house as i type this. oh well!
